The New Custom House couldn't be any truer of a statement. The inside looks cheaper with the hard surface seating. Gone are the booths and nice tables, now looks like Chipotle. Now no service. You go up and order and then grab your order, gone are the waitresses. The food quality has also gone down. What was my favorite clam chowder in a Breadbowl and Fish n Chips, has gone to a never again. The fish was so chewy. Sad. All these places are geared for the tourists and no longer the locals. *Another one bites the DUST*

Stopped by the new Custom House mid-morning for a snack between breakfast and lunch and really enjoyed it. You order at the counter from a large, easy-to-read menu, and there's plenty of seating inside and out. We sat on the patio with the ocean just steps away--such a beautiful spot on the Avila boardwalk. The menu has a great variety. I went with a large clam chowder, which was hearty and satisfying, and added onion rings that were absolutely delicious--thick-cut, perfectly battered, and clearly not frozen. My friend had the half Caesar salad with a small chowder, which was a great lighter option. If I had one wish it would be that they offer all of their salads and a half portion size, the only one they offer in half portion is the Caesar. One unexpected highlight--their takeaway bag! It's sturdy, has handles, and is actually big enough to fit large containers comfortably. Such a small detail, but so well thought out. I also spotted a lobster roll on the menu that I'll definitely be back to try. Overall, great food, easy ordering, and a perfect beachside atmosphere. The bar is close by with pretty cocktails as well as standard beers and wines.

We took the kids to the beach and of course everyone was hungry for lunch when we got there. So we gave The New Custom House a try! My youngest tried the shrimp kids meal, my oldest got the cheeseburger kids meal and my mom and I tried their fried fish. My mom got hers with fries and I tried their clam chowder. There was a generous amount of clams in my cup of chowder and it had great flavor. The girl who took our order was super patient and answered all of our questions. The whole place had a nice vibe and they kept it clean. They had clean, nice restrooms too. We would definitely come back.

This place has changed a lot since the last time we were here! It's no longer tables with service, you order and pay at the front and get a buzzer for your food. I got the street tacos which came with 5 steak tacos, and my husband got the fettuccine Alfredo with chicken. The kids meals were good size and the kids got a frisbee as a plate & a "toy". Super pet friendly, we so multiple dogs when we were there. I liked that they had a couple Crow and Wolf seltzers!

Drinks only! It's been awhile since we popped into this place within Avila! We were shocked by the transformation that occurred about a year ago to the inside: it's so light and beachy! Very welcoming with a great view to the outside! We curled up to the bar around 1030 and were welcomed by Michael. Michael was an excellent bartender who provided us great service and conversation. I had the Custom Bloody Mary that came with bacon, shrimp and olives and more...it was a breakfast of champions! This was a solid drink! It was great to see that locals and tourist visited this place! All treated with the same level of great service!

My food was excellent. It was so good I forgot to take a picture. They gave indoor and out door seating. Both are excellent. They play great music and have screens showing sports. I recommend the salmon salad. My kids loved the Mac and Cheese while my husband ate the great fish tacos.

We stopped in at The Custom House during a weekend getaway to Avila Beach, and it was exactly what we needed after a day exploring the coast. Grabbed a window table just as the sun was dipping, and the view through those big panes--palm trees swaying, the pier lit up, waves rolling in under that golden-pink sky--was pure magic. You can feel the salty breeze even inside, which makes everything taste better. The food came out fast and generous. We dove into a massive basket of those crispy, cheese-drenched fries topped with herbs and parmesan--indulgent in the best way, perfect for sharing. Then the loaded nacho platter arrived piled high with meat, cheese, beans, and all the fixings--seriously satisfying and great for two. Sides of guac and ranch were fresh and spot-on. Cocktails were a highlight too: my wife's bright turquoise beach drink looked as good as it tasted, garnished with a pineapple wedge that added just the right zing. I went with a deep red dragon tea that paired beautifully with the savory bites. Service was friendly and efficient in that casual beach-town style--no fuss, just smiles and quick refills. The interior has a cool, modern-coastal feel with the blue tile, string lights outside, and that open layout that keeps things lively without being overwhelming. If you're in Avila looking for ocean views, hearty coastal comfort food, and a relaxed vibe to unwind, this place delivers. We'll definitely be back next time we're craving that seaside escape. Highly recommend grabbing a window seat at golden hour--you won't regret it. Loved it. Thanks for the great evening!

Great food and view of the ocean. Pet friendly and was plenty of seating inside and outside. All the staff was very friendly and courteous and the food was ready pretty fast. Would go back again

This is the most amazing restaurant I have ever been to. They are completely dog friendly and the staff is the nicest I have ever had at any place anywhere. The food is tasty and well priced. Espresso martini was just ok but the bartender Chloe helping me is top notch! Usually it's pick up yourself but since she saw I had a puppy and minimal hands so she brought it to me without me even knowing. I came her Friday night and sat outside: the two male bar tenders were also so friendly and helpful but this Chloe made my experience. Chill spot for beach goers and a nice environment for a casual date. I noticed a pizza parlor connected of seafood isn't your jam.

I had the stream clams - not impress the clam was not in season, so small no meat at all. My entire pot is all other veggies.

Love this little beach food shack! Food was great, came out quick, beers are cold, and the patio is right on the boardwalk. Not much more I could ask for I only want to eat fish and chips and fish tacos when I'm at the beach, so Custom House is my new go to in Avila Best bites: Fish and chips were excellent. Light, crispy, flavorful Onion rings are perfectly crispy with a solid bite of onion Sunburst Other bites: Ribs on farmers market day were good, just don't expect Texas bbq quality

Surprise! You get potato chips with your shrimp cocktail!

The sign at the entrance said to find your own table, order inside and get a pager, go inside when pager goes off. We were surprised to have Helena take our drink and food order, then brought us a pager. A nice view of the ocean and pier. Weather is great!

Quick service, patio seating, free refills. Largely a do-it yourself place (order at the counter, pick up your food when the coaster light up, get your own refills. My veggie sandwich was very good with lots of avocado. My sister's burger was undercooked (prefer no red inside). The fried fish was declared tasty. Lots of tables with shade which is appreciated!

    Do we need reservations?

I believe they are just doing walk up n get you name on the list. They will tell you the wait time and text you when your table is ready

Why did Custom House stop serving breakfast? Will this be coming back?

    Are there vegan options?

In reviewing the menu online, the Custom House does not have any true vegan options. However they do have have some amazing salads that I'm sure you could order and omit the items you do not want making it a more vegan option.

    Dogs allowed at Custom House?

In outside dining only. They even have a dog menu and offer water.

Durind this shutdown, is patio dining open and what is the wait time if so? Reservations or 1st come 1st served? Do they still serve breakfast, lunch and dinner?

Patio is open. Food is take out style only. Breakfast is available on Sat and Sun only. Limited menu but wait times are not long. They have 3 registers open for quick service

    Are there happy hour specials?

We were not there during happy hour, so I am not sure. However, most places of this caliber usually do.

Is there event space to accommodate up to 50?

Cal Poly is actually a good spot for event space. You can check out their options online. They can accommodate a variety of party sizes. What are you looking for in space?

To sit here is to be seduced by the Pacific's rhythmic pulse, a panoramic distraction that almost--almost--masks the architectural and emotional exhaustion of the room. The décor suggests a space in transition, or perhaps an identity crisis. It bears the unmistakable look of a "palimpsest"--a new design hastily layered over the ghost of a previous one, creating an aesthetic friction that feels more like a temporary stage set than a permanent sanctuary. This weariness extends to the staff, who navigate the floor with a palpable, heavy-lidded misery, as if the sheer beauty of the coastline has become a burden they are no longer interested in carrying. The kitchen, however, still possesses moments of genuine, startling clarity. I opted for the "Trio," a format that usually promises variety but often delivers compromise. Not so here. The sandwich was a minor triumph of construction and flavor, a high-water mark for a casual lunch. It was flanked by a clam chowder of remarkable depth--creamy without being cloying, and singing with the brine of the sea. Yet, the meal is not without its turbulence. The accompanying salad arrived drowning, a casualty of an over-zealous hand with the dressing that rendered the greens more of a soup than a side. And then there is the matter of the French Onion soup. To encounter a $9 upcharge for a bowl of onions and melted Gruyère is to experience a moment of pure, capitalistic vertigo. It is a price point that suggests a level of luxury the service and the "layered" décor simply haven't earned. As for the amenities, the state of the restrooms remains a mystery--a rare blind spot in an otherwise exhaustive afternoon. Blue Moon Over Avila remains a destination for the eyes, and intermittently, for the palate. If you can ignore the visible gloom of the service and the audacity of the surcharges, the view alone is worth the price of admission. Just perhaps stick to the chowder and leave the French Onion to the high rollers.

We ordered our first round of drinks and Brie for an App, which arrived promptly but delivered by other staff. Didn't see a waiter for the next 20-30 minutes. No second round of drinks, no food order. Stood up and walked to the front where our waiter met me as he walked out from inside. We asked if they forgot about us and got a nonchalant response that they were busy. At which point I just asked for the check and said we would just go somewhere else. He handed me his payment tablet and looked away. 40$ for two beers and cold Brie sprinkled in with some wasted time. No offer to comp the bill, get a manager, or keep us there. So we paid and moved onto another establishment.

The way it works is you order at the bar, and then they will take down your phone number to text when your order is ready. My order was ready at 6:53, so we were looking at about a 23 minute wait - which I think is fair given how busy it was. The food itself was just okay to me. I didn't think it was anything to write home about, but that could be because I had some really great tri tip at the SLO Farmer's Market the day before. However, I will say, I really liked this place for the environment. There was live music, and a lot of table and chairs to just look out at the water and just enjoy the views. Our two 15 pound dogs split a single salmon dish and there was enough food for both of them. We found the sea bass and the clam chowder to be two of our favorite dishes. The sea bass comes with a mix of mushrooms and white beans along with a red wine sauce. The combination of textures between the flaky fish, soft beans, and chewy mushrooms makes for a great mouthful and the acidic and flavorful sauce brings all the ingredients together. They suggested Lido, so we decided to arrive early and have a cocktail and appetizer during their happy hour before settling in for dinner. The visit started off strong with the lobby staff engaging in a little fun banter as well as the hostess who seated us was engaging and friendly. Unfortunately anything positive stopped there because our server was anything but pleasant and welcoming. We opted to sit outside on the patio as the weather was mild and the view stunning. We did request an umbrella as the sun was strong and another employee brought one over. The server seemed to lack any personality, no smile, no response to playful joking or interactions. I asked a question about the menu because the happy hour menu I had and had selected a drink off, differed from the other three that my husband and our friends had. The waiter flatly stated that my menu was wrong and the drink I wanted to order was not available and suggested a different drink that was nothing like the one I wanted to order. There was no apology and he didn't even take the incorrect menu, it was as if he didn't care. We placed an order for two appetizers and four drinks, three of which were the same cocktail off the happy hour menu. At the same time, we inquired about a more extensive dinner menu and the waiter stated they didn't serv dinner until 5pm but it was already 4:45pm and so we requested dinner menus. The waiter asked us how many menus we wanted, which seemed strange as none of us have ever eaten at a restaurant where each individual person wasn't provided their own menu and so we had to state we wanted four menus. When the four menus arrived, one for each person, one of the three was incorrect just like the happy hour one, showing cocktails that were no longer available. The drinks and appetizers eventually came, they took at least 15 minutes with the food arriving before any of the drinks. While the food was okay, the three cocktails were pretty awful, mine being the worst of the three. They were all the same drink made with grapefruit but my personal drink was far more bitter than the other two, it wasn't palatable at all. The other two who ordered the same drink, my husband and friend drank the drinks since we were paying for them. At this point, the experience was so bad between the waiter who seemed to have no desire to serve people and the terrible cocktails that we decided we should cut our loses and leave to eat dinner elsewhere. We left one full cocktail, and two partial cocktails on the table. The bill was paid and as my husband and I brought up the rear of our group. As we were leaving the waiter remarked that he, "hoped we have a better day." This was rude, unprofessional and confirmed leaving Lido was the right choice. This was a terrible experience both with the waiter and cocktails. A place could have the most amazing food but if the customer service is lacking, the quality of food is irrelevant. I would rather have mediocre food and friendly, welcoming and engaging customer service.

Evan took great care of us with some nice wines and then told us all about the tinned fish they had. Tinned Fish Sidenote: Two weeks before this trip if I heard the phrase tinned fish (TF) I would have thought oily mackerel or sardines smelling nasty. While I like anchovies, I was not prepared for TF. We were just in SanFran and The Kid's roomates were eating TF. Really? Yuck! Then we went to the Vintage Press in Visalia, CA, and 1/2 page of the large menu was 20 or 30 versions of TF. WTF? And now we were in Avila being told about the options and how delicious they were. Back to Shuck Shack. With Evan's guidance, we ordered a number of items off their menu including oysters (hauled in that morning), smoked trout TF, local salami, LandChos and Gildas. Check out the menu pics for descriptions. Paired with some great wines it was a fantastic culinary experience. Adding on to that the great service and setting of Avila Beach makes this an easy 5 star experience. GO! EAT VERY WELL!! HAVE FUN, Damnit!!!

We originally made our reservation for 7:30 p.m.... we then decided we wanted to perhaps change it to 6:30. We called ahead and hopes that they could accommodate us. They said they couldn't promise anything but they would try. We showed up around 6:15. And they sat us down around 6:35. We had a beautiful window seat overlooking the ocean and had a perfect view of the sunset. I forgot our server's name but he was amazing. This place sounds fancy and bougie but it's really not. The food might be, but the vibe is not. There's no dress code. Everything we ordered was soooo tasty and delicious! We ordered fish and chips, baked clams, a wedge salad, and seafood pasta. For drinks we had two mocktails that were just okay. We also got a couple of flour tortillas with some cinnamon butter and a salsa trio. Our server suggested we spread butter inside the tortilla and drizzle our favorite salsa inside. So good. After dinner we decided to walk around the restaurant and appreciate the views. I'm so glad we came here. We will definitely come back next time we come to Pismo Beach

A couple of the drinks didn't quite hit, but the "Sunset and Chill" was a group favorite. The wedge salad isn't traditional, but it's delicious and a nice twist on the classic. The lasagna was a standout -- rich, decadent, and really satisfying. The portion looks small, but don't be fooled. Service was great throughout. They gave us semi-private seating, which we really appreciated, and the outdoor setup added a fresh, airy feel while still keeping things cozy for our group. For dessert, the toasted marshmallow torte was the clear table favorite -- definitely the one to try. The lemon tart was good too, but if you're choosing one, go marshmallow. A great way to wrap up the weekend.

All dishes were given with care but not necessarily to overly impress, meaning that the portion size was generous rather than dainty. The experience of the place was considerably more sophisticated than I recall from the Central Coast of almost 20 years ago when I lived in the area. (Granted, time has passed, but still refreshing to see.) Staff also seemed happy to be there and engaging with diners, more than merely doing their jobs. Thank you Ember for raising the bar and impressing this out of town guest!

As college staff taking students on a Central Coast campus tour during spring break, we needed a place for lunch on short notice. When I called, the staff was incredibly helpful and connected me with Caitlin via email. Not only did she respond quickly, but she was also kind, flexible, and truly accommodating throughout the process. From the moment we arrived, everything was handled seamlessly. Organizing a group of our size is no small task, but the team managed it with professionalism, patience, and genuine care. The seating was thoughtfully arranged, service was efficient, and every member of our group felt welcomed and taken care of. The food came out in a timely manner, was well-prepared, and absolutely amazing! It was so nice to see everyone enjoying their meals, and it really added to the overall positive experience. Even when we decided to order dessert at the last minute, the staff remained gracious and accommodating. We are incredibly grateful for the effort and flexibility shown to us. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone--especially those planning group events. Thank you for making our visit such a success!

As soon as I walked in, I was mesmerized by the refrigerator row of wine/champaign bottles. The bar area is well decorated with a dark background and small lights to emulate a dark starry night. Their service was not good in our L.A.-opinionated minds. Yes, we were greeted and seated immediately upon arrival. We waited maybe 20 minutes before someone eventually came to take our order. Mind you, the whole time we were ready to order, the waitress who seated us was walking back and forth, setting up tables around us. She clearly saw that we were ready to order but didn't even offer to take our orders or get another staff who could. This is a place to come to if you are NOT in a hurry and are here to simply chill and take life SLOCAL style. The food here seems like a fusion between American and Mediterranean style. 1. Octopus Appetizer (4.5/5) Large octopus tentacles served with a combination of vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, roasted peppers) toasted with garlic and olive oil. The vegetables and octopus were all cooked very well. The octopus was fresh and melts in your mouth. 2. Grilled Asparagus (2.5/5) Large asparagus that's seasoned lightly, but it was not cooked correctly. It had a very stringy-fibery texture. 3. Philly cheesesteak (2/5) The hoagie bread was grocery store quality at best. We were sad that it wasn't even toasted or warmed up, so ended up ditching the bread/bun and just ate the inside. The cheese was at least nicely melted. The onion and bell peppers were fresh, but the steak was "meh." Definitely not quality beef. The beef itself was also not seasoned enough, so was bland and dry. 4. Onion rings (5/5) Fried to perfection. Loved that the onions were fresh and it was easy to pull apart with each bite. The aioli sauce that its served with is plain and bland though. 5. Crab cake (4/5): Crabby patty anyone? All I tasted was fried Panko batter. Wish the patty itself had more flavor and spice. The garlic aioli sauce that came with it though was good. 6. Dr. Marquis Salad (4/5): Fresh spring mix lettuce topped with ground beef and crispy bacon, tomato, sliced avocado and tossed with their house-made olive oil, salt and pepper dressing. Overall, it was a hearty salad with plentiful flavor. It was just a bit weird to have ground beef in salad, but I guess that's what makes this salad dish unique
