I didn't mind the wine, but I was hoping for a glass of traditional oyster pairing wines as an option, but the owners are in the industry so they highlight their wines. Which are pretty good. No notable flaws, just honestly decent, coming from a wine snob. Only petnat I've tried and liked as well. Oysters were top notch. I would add salt vs just ice as a serving dish though bc they started drowning in water if you don't eat them fast enough. Love that they serve caviar bumps! The fried smoked fish sandwich was awesome. Great bread and extras. Flavorful! People were really nice. Welcoming and inviting. I could sit there every day and be happy. read more

Why has tinned fish been hidden from me and The Wife, when everyone, who is anyone, has known about it forever? Back to Shuck Shack. We were visiting Avila Beach for my birthday week and decided to try out Sinor-Lavalle's wine tasting room a block back from Front Street and just down the way from our AirBnB. We met the owner and he suggested to mosey on over to Shuck Shack. We walked there, on Front Street, and met Evan, the GM. Evan took great care of us with some nice wines and then told us all about the tinned fish they had. Tinned Fish Sidenote: Two weeks before this trip if I heard the phrase tinned fish (TF) I would have thought oily mackerel or sardines smelling nasty. While I like anchovies, I was not prepared for TF. We were just in SanFran and The Kid's roomates were eating TF. Really? Yuck! Then we went to the Vintage Press in Visalia, CA, and 1/2 page of the large menu was 20 or 30 versions of TF. WTF? And now we were in Avila being told about the options and how delicious they were. Back to Shuck Shack. With Evan's guidance, we ordered a number of items off their menu including oysters (hauled in that morning), smoked trout TF, local salami, LandChos and Gildas. Shuck Shack new location review. The views and the location are amazing! You can't get any better!! The oysters- a lot smaller and they didn't have any of the fixings (Horseradish, cocktail sauce). They just gave us hot sauce and a homemade special sauce that was like a vinegar something. We requested some cocktail sauce and literally got less than a tablespoon for a dozen oysters. The wine - tried two different kinds. Both thumbs down. Had a sandwich that was really good. It was the Nduja melt - highly recommend this. This is an amazing location and a great spot to sit and have a drink and food. Been doing it for years with the prior establishment. But sadly, if the wine and food doesn't get better, we'll not come back. read more

As a massive oyster enjoyer, I HIGHLY recommend coming here. I found their prices VERY affordable and especially when I compare it other oyster places I have been. I've been a visitor to Avila Beach for years (have timeshare here). I've been very remised to have never visited the Sinor-LaVallee tasting room. I just wasn't aware of it. Today I visited their somewhat new Shuck Shack. My visit was by far the best epicurean experience I've had at Avila Beach! It's not even something I expect to have here. I started with the 1/2 dozen Morro Bay oysters and the Uncommon Earth wine tasting (natural wines). Fantastic! I especially liked the Chenin Blanc (wonderful honey taste) and Valdiguie. I purchased both plus the local fermented hot sauce, which was also delicious. I also ordered their Local 5-Plate. What a treat! The components are locally sourced. The Stepladder Creamery Brie was a standout. A surprise was a ground salami; very tasty and fun. After tasting the Sinor-LaVallee SLO Granache, I purchased that too. This is a must try! I'm returning in a few days to do the Sinor-LaVallee tasting and I'm sure I'll be purchasing some more wines :) I also joined their very reasonable wine club. Shout out to Shae who lead me through this adventure. Lastly, while I was here, I learned that Mike Sinor (who served me) was responsible for the San Luis Obispo Coast AVA. Bless you :) read more

My wife and I come to Avila a few times a year. This location on the board walk area has been our favorite for nearly 15 years. On this trip we found out the business had changed hands and was now Shuck Shack's second location. We loved our previous experience but not so much at this location. We both had a cider. I'm not sure if their choice of ciders to sell was simply poor, or came out of a larger bottle that had been opened for days. It tasted very flat, both in flavor and body. We decided to try the orange wine for something different. Mmmm I wouldn't do that again. The dozen oysters were small and didn't come with usual set up. Kind of disappointing. There was a sandwich called the nduja melt that was very tasty. Not really a meal, but great on the side. All and all I'll give it one more try on our next trip out. Unfortunately though, if things don't improve we will have to find a new spot. read more

Wow wow wow we love the shuck shack. My boyfriend and I have recently become obsessed with oysters, and have been ordering them every chance we get. When we found a place called the "Shuck Shack" we were sold. This is a family owned wine and oyster bar that was so incredible. We decided on a half dozen oysters that we got to shuck ourselves! The daughter of the owner taught us step by step and it was such a cool experience. The family that owns this place also owns Sinor-Lavallee Wines, a winery near Avila Beach. While we worked on our oysters the man who runs both the winery and Shuck Shack was there to explain his wine journey to us, as well as his favorite wine options they served. Amazing.! My husband and I visited Shuck Shack while on a trip to SLO. We had their incredible oysters and opted to shuck our own for the first time. You can pay an up charge to have them shucked for you, but we thought it might be fun to give it a try. It was a breeze. We also enjoyed the caviar service and charcuterie plate.
