This place is awesome. A diner style place with good prices and great food! Service is friendly and it's next to the fishing dock for a nice stroll after!

I love the location! Next to the parking lot near the base of the pier. We were lucky to find a free parking spot. It was crowded on the weekend but only had a short wait. We sat outside and the views are good. Much better views if you sit inside but the weather was gorgeous. They had pork tamales for a special and I'm so glad I tried it. I was so torn about getting that or seafood. The tamales were flavorful. The masa stuck to the corn husks which was disappointing. It came with 2 eggs and I chose hash browns as the side. If you can handle spice, you would love the sauce that was served with the tamales. I dipped my fork in and couldn't do it. The eggs were cooked perfectly. The potatoes didn't have any seasoning but were very crispy. It was a lot of food for the price. I did try some of the fisherman's platter. That was a decent sized portion. The shrimp and calamari steak were delicious. The fried oyster was huge. The clam strips were small with a lot of breading and not enough clam. Bathroom was very clean. Service excellent.

Banana coconut pancakes and kids breakfast

The employees were great and so accommodating especially to our toddler. The place has tons of parking, lots to look at and plenty of indoor/outdoor seating. Our son loved his pancake breakfast with special whip cream from the waiter. I ordered the banana granola and coconut pancakes which didn't come with any granola, the coconut was like shredded white sugar, bananas were very very sweet and the pancakes were like cardboard. I mean no harm to anyone, i love a good local family run establishment I'm just noting for others who may order this thinking it's something it's not. We appreciate the kindness of the staff, thank you.

We live in Avila and haven't been to Fat Cats in years. A friend told me she and her dad had a great breakfast there recently. So my husband and I decided to try again. I'm glad we got there when we did about 8:45 am on a Saturday. When we left there was a line. It was a very warm day for Avila but not too much near the ocean. Took a little bit to place our order. Coffee, pretty good, and water we received right away, plus refills. My husband had the Chili Verde omelette , loved it and ate it all. Came with hash browns and English muffin. I had the Denver omelette, very good and lucky me I have leftovers. I also had hash browns but decided to get sour dough toast. The place was clean and we sat inside. Outside was already booked up. We will definitely will be back.

Best Breakfast Place Around and Some of the Best Lunch and Dinners by far ! ! ! Great place for a small intimate gathering or a slightly larger group. Best Staff

The location is great, we sat outside on a nice day and it was nice. However, the food is very disappointing and overpriced. It's similar to a chilis or Applebees, nothing special just high priced mid food. I barely touched my taco salad and wasn't even offered for it to be taken off the bill or replaced. Mimosa was big and good though. Server seemed like a nice guy.

The food was so tasty, the portions were perfect. The service was fantastic, very welcoming, amd made us feel like apart of the family. The ambiance is so cute, and I love the vibe when you walk thru the doors. Well be returning again.

My son had breakfast for dinner and it was delicious

We had Martin as our server and he was exceptional. He was great with recommendations and very attentive. Good was super good and you can't beat the view on the outside patio! Highly recommend.

This is a must do if you are staying in Avila. Fat Cats is a cute little locals spot for breakfast and lunch in the bay. They have indoor seating and outdoor sheltered seating if you want the full salty air experience. Our waitress, Caress, was super friendly and acted as though we go there every day. You could see a mix of families and locals in booths and at the counter. Our food was great and we enjoyed the bay out the window. This is a fun beach spot to start your vacation with a hardy breakfast and a walk on the beach.

All around great place. Had crab eggs Benedict with hash browns and a very nice mimosa pour. Arrive is great. Got here before the crowd, but it will get crowded. Enjoy!

The waitstaff was excellent, the cinnamon rolls were amazing, and the view was beautiful. I would go back for the cinnamon rolls. The crab benedict was good and had a fair serving of crab.

Food was good but we were left eating in the rain. While being on a blended family vacation we decided to go to this restaurant as it was a childhood favorite of my girlfriend. When we arrived we were sat outside and ordered some food with our waitress. It started to get gloomy while we waited. Once they brought out our food it started to rain. The other wait staff came outside and moved their customers inside while we were left to eat in the rain. The food was good (kiddos even enjoyed their food) but we had to ask another server for our check because we wanted to leave and not get drenched. All in all we enjoyed the view and the restaurant decor but this may be our last visit.

I would add salt vs just ice as a serving dish though bc they started drowning in water if you don't eat them fast enough. Love that they serve caviar bumps! The fried smoked fish sandwich was awesome. Great bread and extras. Flavorful! People were really nice. Welcoming and inviting. I could sit there every day and be happy.

We were visiting Avila Beach for my birthday week and decided to try out Sinor-Lavalle's wine tasting room a block back from Front Street and just down the way from our AirBnB. We met the owner and he suggested to mosey on over to Shuck Shack. We walked there, on Front Street, and met Evan, the GM. Evan took great care of us with some nice wines and then told us all about the tinned fish they had. Tinned Fish Sidenote: Two weeks before this trip if I heard the phrase tinned fish (TF) I would have thought oily mackerel or sardines smelling nasty. While I like anchovies, I was not prepared for TF. We were just in SanFran and The Kid's roomates were eating TF. Really? Yuck! Then we went to the Vintage Press in Visalia, CA, and 1/2 page of the large menu was 20 or 30 versions of TF. WTF? And now we were in Avila being told about the options and how delicious they were. Back to Shuck Shack. With Evan's guidance, we ordered a number of items off their menu including oysters (hauled in that morning), smoked trout TF, local salami, LandChos and Gildas. Check out the menu pics for descriptions. Paired with some great wines it was a fantastic culinary experience. Adding on to that the great service and setting of Avila Beach makes this an easy 5 star experience. GO! EAT VERY WELL!! HAVE FUN, Damnit!!!

We ended up sitting inside to avoid the evening breeze, and it turned out to be the perfect choice. The dining room was quaint, cozy, and relatively quiet, making it easy for the six of us to have great conversation throughout dinner. We started with the ratatouille, which absolutely blew us away, the bubbling brie, which was rich, gooey, and beyond delicious, and an order of frites that were crispy and satisfying. For our entrees, our table ordered the duck à l'orange, scallops (which I ordered and they were spectacular), a burger, mushroom ravioli, a house garden salad, and a Caesar salad. The mushroom ravioli was incredible, the garden salad was much larger than expected and very fresh, and the Caesar salad was crisp and flavorful. Every dish was beautifully prepared, and the quality of the food really stood out. The only downsides were that the burger was served plain, even though lettuce and onion had been requested, and the service was a bit slower than expected. We had a 6:15 p.m. reservation, so we arrived before the dinner rush and anticipated a quicker pace. Overall, the outstanding food, charming atmosphere, and prime location made for a wonderful dining experience. We'd definitely return the next time we're in Avila Beach.

The way it works is you order at the bar, and then they will take down your phone number to text when your order is ready. However, it seemed like they were more using the loud speaker because I didn't receive the text until 9:57pm that night. My order was ready at 6:53, so we were looking at about a 23 minute wait - which I think is fair given how busy it was. The food itself was just okay to me. I didn't think it was anything to write home about, but that could be because I had some really great tri tip at the SLO Farmer's Market the day before. However, I will say, I really liked this place for the environment. There was live music, and a lot of table and chairs to just look out at the water and just enjoy the views. It was super family friendly, and I found it to be really enjoyable to just sit and hang out. I did find it odd that they close early (8pm) on a Friday night. At 7:59pm, the employees will come up to you to let you know that they close at 8pm, so it seems like they are strict about that.

Food was fine for kids who just want the basics. At least it's clean inside. That's the one thing going for it I guess. And the kids plates are Frisbees, so that's fun. We had a reservation for a birthday dinner and arrived about 30 minutes early. We were told we'd be seated closer to our reservation time, which was completely understandable. Even after our reservation time had passed, we had to check in with the host again before we were finally seated, despite there being plenty of empty tables. The service at the front definitely could have been handled better. The food, on the other hand, was very good with a great variety of options. I loved that they start you off with freshly made tortillas, cinnamon butter, and salsa to share. I ordered the Campechana de Mariscos, which was fresh, generously portioned, and perfect for sharing. We also had the Molcajete, and it was delicious! It came with a great mix of steak, chicken, chorizo, jumbo shrimp, nopal, and cheese. The portion was generous and easily enough for two people. Other dishes we ordered also included the pozole, chicken nachos, and lobster mac and cheese. Everything was delicious as well! The mac and cheese especially. For drinks, I tried the Golden Hour nonalcoholic cocktail, and unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend it. It tasted like watered-down ginger beer with no carbonation and only the faintest hint of pineapple. It was more on the bitter taste. Overall, this is a great restaurant for the ocean views and flavorful food. The portions are generous, and there's something for everyone on the menu.
