Overall everything was great on our end, we went out for lunch on a Monday and were the only ones there at the moment, other people ended up coming in closer to the end of the meal. We sat at the bar and since this was the first time I was there we got menus and a drink menu. Unfortunately the drink menu is kind of useless since it's just a picture with colors, not descriptions of the drinks. I got a Cajun burger and fries and everything tasted great. My fiancée got a sandwich and he enjoyed it as well. Everything was great but then the people across from us got there food and it had mold on it, so then I started wondering if i had any issues and didn't realize. We had such a nice dinner at the Monkey Bar last night. I hadn't visited in probably ten years and I was pleasantly surprised to see all of the great updates to the patio area. Aside from the cosmetic upgrades, the thing that struck us most was how attentive all of the servers were. We had three different people stopping by our table to check on us, but they never made us feel rushed - just cared for! The sangria was really excellent - not too sweet and refreshingly bubbly - and the wings were well seasoned and could be enjoyed plain or with sauce. Portions were reasonable and the prices were too (though the current photos of menus on Yelp are outdated as of 5/20/22 and prices are higher now by about $2 per dish). read more

COVID-19 Review Social distancing measures were taken. Plexiglass in bar area between stools, tables were nicely spread apart. Because I'm a COVID freak, we of course sat outside on the very separated high top tables. I felt comfortable there, but could tell the covered area was getting a little crowded. Waitresses had masks on, but not necessarily properly. They were all the same mask so I'm assuming they were ordered and fit too big. However, there were masks available for patrons at the door (which is an awesome touch by the way) but also made me wonder why the servers wouldn't wear the surgical masks that actually fit their faces, rather than the droopy uniform masks they were given. Menu is large, and very affordable. To me, this is just your typical Pittsburgh bar. Nice big salads, with fries and cheese, lots of fried appetizers to choose from, sandwiches, etc. Our food was pretty good, and very filling. Our waitresses were kind, and we even got to speak to the owner - who just recently purchased the place, and is making huge improvements. From our discussion, it seems as though Friday and Saturday nights get super packed - so if social distancing is your thing, this probably wouldn't be the place for you on those nights - but for a weeknight, I was happy with the socially distanced situation. Also, previous reviews stated that smoking was allowed on the patio. When we were at the Monkey Bar, this wasn't the case - we didn't notice anyone smoking. If it were, I would have been completely turned off to eat here as well. No one likes the smell of cigarette smoke while they are eating (unless you are a chain-smoker yourself) Moral of the story/aka review: New owner, has done many improvements to fix Monkey Bar up to the cool hang out it is today. Lots of outdoor (covered) seating, with heaters for colder months. May not be the #1 spot for those of you overly concerned with Covid percussions (which I totally am, but came on a weeknight and sat super far away from everyone - including the waitresses) If you're looking for good Pittsburgh bar food, on the outskirts of town, you may want to stop in and check out the monkey bar. Only recommendation that would have made me feel more comfortable would be if masks were worn properly. It's 2020 so 'social distancing' is being followed with screens available to separate the tables- it wasn't busy on a Wednesday afternoon so they weren't being used. The patio is fully covered, like a comfy big back porch, with a waitress, room for a band, food, etc. I ordered the fish sandwich with fries & slaw for about $10.50. The fish was perfectly cooked, the fries crispy and the slaw creamy. My only wish is that the ketchup be kept cold, instead of kept on the railing, where it was a balmy 80+ degrees. Came here with colleagues for cocktails after work on a Friday, and the place was busy. While the inside is small and dark, I would love the outdoor "porch" space even if it weren't for COVID. We ordered food and drinks when we could finally get a server to stop at our table after the last member of our party showed up. The French fries were popular, but the wings are not as large as they used to be. Everything else was decent. I asked the server to have the bartender make me a bourbon drink, and both she and the drink were uninspired. Took a good bit of effort to get everyone else's drinks refilled. Bathrooms are downstairs, gender-segregated, and not handicapped accessible. (For that matter, there are stairs to get into the restaurant, too.) We went there for dinner with friends 11/1, a good and bad experience. We made the mistake of going for dinner after a Steeler game. It was hours after the game was over, the place was filled with leftover game-watcher drunks being loud and obnoxious... obviously way overserved. She was too busy pumping drinks into the local professional partiers left over from the game... of course, eye on the tips. The food did come in a reasonable timeframe after our order. The food.... I had an Italian hoagie, it was exceptionally good. They advertise it as "their way", and their way is really good. The prices were very reasonable too, $6.95 for a hoagie with slaw and fries, you can't beat it, and there was a lot of food there! The recent renovation....I like it! Definitely nicer than before, looks like a good place for summer too when they open all of the new garage doors. It was in the 40s when we were there and it was perfectly comfortable in that enclosed back deck. Big TVs all around, you could see a screen from wherever you sat. 10 year customer treated awful. I never leave bad reviews I usually only post when there has been an exceptionally good or bad experience. However, we had an interesting experience that was rather disappointing. I walked in the front door no one waiting no matradee, but a sign, "seat your self." Proceeded to the deck, no one to greet, but a sign, "seat yourself." What did we do? Sat ourselves in one of 3 empty tables. Intuitive right? Waitress pleasantly placed our menus only to return to tell us there was a wait list and we had to go back up front to get on the list; her demeanor was quit different than before. We where quite off put and all of us felt like we were undeservingly chastised. People make mistakes, I Totally understand. I politely explained the signs. She said nothing and waked away. A manager, surprisingly confrontational, told us the same. I told her the same she persisted with a somewhat infantain demeanor. I had to ask, how was this out fault? Disgusted and childishly told us, "it's fine." Then walked away and rotated the sign to the new preferred seating method. We came for our usual good time not a confrontation nor to be treated poorly for someone's honest mistake. It took us a minute to think about what happened and decided to go. We didn't what to take someone who's been waiting's seat nor patronize a place that didn't want us. I politely told the manager she lost a 10 year customer she didn't even acknowledge me. We stuck with this place even though the pandemic. To be treated the way we were was just uncalled for. If there was a wait that would have been fine we were in no rush. I was getting my hair done when the ladies in the salon started talking about the wings at the Monkey Bar. I had to laugh. When I moved to Pittsburgh the Monkey Bar was a dingy hotel with little bungalows that you could rent by the hour. Not. Even. Kidding. At some point it was sold and the bungalows were bulldozed and the main building was re-done and turned into the bar/restaurant. I had heard good things about it for years and finally decided to try it. We wanted to eat on the patio that had palm trees and bamboo posts but it was stormy. So we entered the bar and they told us to grab a table. I was disappointed to see that not only was smoking allowed but they had an actual cigarette machine. The place is pretty small. There are chairs around the bar, 3 booths, and two high top tables that seat 6. We were given menus which stated CASH ONLY but later learned that they DO TAKE CREDIT CARDS!! We ordered a Cajun Chicken Sandwich platter, a Fish Sandwich platter and an order of Buffalo wings. The wings were whole wings, not drumettes. The were hot and crispy with spices on them but the buffalo sauce came in a small container on the side. The wings were good without the sauce but we did use some of the sauce. The Chicken sandwich was spicy and juicy. The platters include coleslaw and fries. The coleslaw was really good. The fries were big but could have used another minute or two in the fryer. The fish sandwich was good. The fish was.lightly battered and fried to a nice crispness on the outside while the inside was nice and flakey. It came with tarter sauce or cocktail sauce. I went with the tarter. I believe it was homemade. The food was good. If I go back i would sit on the patio. FYI Wednesday nights are wing night. read more
