Crabs were overcooked and mushy.
Adell K.

Disappointed and soggy Went to the Baltimore House because they are really the only place in Pittsburgh that has whole crabs. This place is on the decline. Not packed, just 4 tables sat in dining room, but took 20 min to just get my drink. The had advertisements everywhere for a new Black Rock cooking experience but it was not yet available in spite of the menus for it placed on the tables. The crabs were mushy and overcooked. The drinks were weak and watery. The service was not great as they gave me a real hard time with my Groupon. Then the roof started leaking, water pouring down, in the middle of the dining room. It's never been a 5 star restaurant but I used to like this place. I really hope that the Black Rock cooking revitalizes this place if not I don't see them lasting much longer.

The surf and turf meal

A kitchy imitation of Baltimore food. I am from Baltimore. While Pittsburgh has a great restaurant scene, sometimes I miss the great Baltimore crab cakes, hard crabs and other seafood dishes. Baltimore House was a huge disappointment. First, the place they wanted to seat us smelled strongly of cigarette smoke. They allow smoking in their bar area and everyone there was smoking. The regular restaurant tables were right next to the bar area without separate ventilation. We were going to leave until they agreed to open another room so that we could breathe. The decor included kitchy imitations of the decor from some classic Baltimore seafood houses. However the decor had seen better days. The rolls, served first were warm and crispy. They were served with real butter. You had to use your steak knife to spread the butter on the rolls. We got the surf and turf special. The prime rib was fattier than most prime rib cuts. It was cooked rare as we had requested. The crab cake was more cake than crab. There were wisps of crab meat but no actual lumps of crab. The crab cake had an odd sour note. We asked about the ingredients and nothing in the list would have accounted for the sour note. The server said that the crab cake contained Old Bay but I could not taste any. I had to hunt to find the lady's room. When I eventually found it, on a darkened room on another floor, I could not find a light switch so I had to prop the door open so I could see. I could not find any toilet paper so I had to use paper towels.

We came here because my mother had been here once with a couple of her friends. I can beleive the other reviews that say it's gone way down hill. And I don't think their sushi side of the business has ever seen a real sushi chef. And whoever said that no smiles were to be had, hit the nail on the head. If I hadn't been there with my aunt, I'd have given our waitress a good smack! But anyway, the fish I had was actually pretty good so there's at least one person there who knows what he's doing. I had stuffed flounder which was served in a very hot pewter pan. There were three pieces wrapped around some seafood stuffing. And it was pretty good and I ate it all! The side dishes were just so-so. I think I had steamed veggies and something else. All in all, it was passable but no better.

Rouge Dead Guy Ale for $1.00

Have eaten here before on a couple of occasions and the food here is hit or miss. Stopped in for a quick happy hour beer today and got a Rouge Dead Guy Ale draft. It's a little malt-heavy/sweeter than I prefer but for a buck, I'll drink it and be happy. The downstairs bar area caters to smokers but the dining area on the first floor is non-smoking.

We always have a great time at the Baltimore House - especially in the summer when it's blue crab season. Good people. Good seafood.

A hidden gem batting well above its class…read more You'll find it tucked off the side of Old Clariton Rd, locals will remember the American Legion that used to be here. Parking is a breeze and on site. As we walked in, we were greeted and immediately seated. The hostess gave us the option of a high top or bench seat. Inside was exceptionally clean. Seating was nicely spaced around the bar, perfect amount of spacing to not feel cramped and able to hear your date/guests. You can get away with casual dress (I wore shorts and a tee shirt) but I would not feel overdressed in nice clothes either, it could easily accommodate both. Our waitress was super nice. Actually, every staff member was very friendly, which made for a very pleasant atmosphere. We started with a pretzel, both the honey mustard and cheese sauce were delicious. I ordered the summer special "backyard burger" which is a 7oz char-grilled steak burger. My wife got the Angus with a salad. Everything came out as ordered and was delicious! Service was excellent. This is a definite return for us!

My only complaint was that the music was too loud; we were sitting beneath a speaker. Though when I asked if it could be turned down slightly, they immediately obliged. By then, the crowd had thinned out and that helped. (The pork shank will bring me back!)

The breakfast menu had plenty options. My eyes landed on the fritatta rustica right away and I selected fruit as the side option. I ordered orange juice, as well. The dish looked appealing and came with some rectangle of hard bread (ciabatta toast) which i did not eat. The frittata containing kale, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, parmesan, and mozzarella looked good and was good. However, it wasn't the consistency I know of frittatas, having even made them. This one was flat, totally flat, as in flat like a slice of thin crust pizza. My experience with a frittata is more lush, higher, made in a spring pan. The price of the fritatta that came with toast and fruit and the side of orange juice was $18. Based on the higher than I would like price and the consistency of the frittata I'll give 4 instead of stars.

We told him right away that we needed a high chair and booster chair and we were quickly accommodated and it bought out some coloring materials for the kids as well. Deconstructed egg sandwich, grilled cheese, and turkey hash were all delicious. The salmon eggs benedict was okay, but under seasoned and the salmon was mushy. The kids had waffles and eggs which were tasty and well-received by the kids.
