Really great FULLFILLING food. American, seafood, burgers, and a few pasta dishes. Negative: only a couple past dishes. Possitive: Everything else! My husband had the Delmonco, where I had the mac and cheese. I don't normally order mac and cheese out, but it sounded good. It was very rich and creamy, and very delicious. The strawberry shortcake was amazing. The best part was our waitress Katie. She was WONDERFUL! Very helpful, friendly and accommodating to our family of 4 (including 2 teenagers that don't normally go to nice restaurants). She was even more than happy to take a family picture of us, for us. For a place that USED to be THE place to eat in Old Forge and would consistently be a 5 Star experience over the years their Service and especially food quality has severely decreased. Our Family would plan our Columbus Day Weekend with a must stop for dinner at the Old Mill. This year will be our last. The stuffed Pork Chops were something I would drive 100 miles for but sadly now their version of "stuffed" pork chops this Columbus Day consisted of 2 thin, fatty pork chops slapped on top of stuffing. Not even thick enough to be stuffed. The other members of our party all ordered the NY Strip. No one ate more than half of the $31 steak as it was riddled with fat. Less than 20 people in the Old Mill during our dinner and it took an hour from the time our order was placed until it was served. We've enjoyed many excellent meals here but we will not be returning due to the progressive decline in quality and service. After this experience I'd get a Big Mac and feel more satisfied. read more

This place has been around for a while, so this review is an aggregation of numerous visits to this dining establishment. Roger K's review of the food is accurate: it's decent. The service is just terrible though. Not from the waiters and waitresses, but from the management and the owners at the door. Just terrible attitudes; could care less about their customers. Had a very good meal. They serve soup, salad family style with, I think, homemade dressing. Your choice of 4 brought to the table. Dad had the fried fish, cod. He said it was very good. I had chicken breast stuffed with spinach and cheese. Very good, and large serving it had a side of broccoli that was good , but I was too full to really enjoy. I picked the French onion soup instead of the squash and sausage soup. That was very good. Rolls were also provided. They seamed to be commercially prepared. Over all very good. read more

I feel terrible writing this review, but i just have to. Our waitress and the staff in general were amazing so the service is def not what I complain about....it's the food! It was painfully overpriced and horrible! Kid cuisine makes a better chicken cutlet!! We were so tired of bar food that we decided to give this a try as their menu is pretty vast! Basically a big pile of meh. Ate here with my girlfriend for lunch. The service was ok. I ordered a cheeseburger with fries and the girlfriend had a fish sandwich with fries. Ate dinner there with my family after a day trip in the area. Everything was excellent. Every single item we ordered was so delicious. Ahi Tuna appetizer and the Bavarian pretzel appetizer were both delicious. Wife had lobster tacos she loved them. I had pork schnitzel sandwich and it was amazing. What a great meal. Kids had kids menu items and loved them. Fries were perhaps the best hand cut fries I have ever eaten. Perfect. Desserts were first rate. On a side note: their Arnold palmers were the absolute best I have ever drank before. They were outstanding. Weird to enjoy a non alcoholic drink that much but damn they were that good. We have spent many days in old forge and have never eaten there, it is my new favorite restaurant. The decor and atmosphere were both on point too. Visited Old Mill for dinner. Eaten there before under old management loved the soup and salad, that's gone. They had a seafood buffet which we ordered. I should have known better. All typical frozen fried food. The food was barely warm when I got to the table and cold by the time I was half way through dinner. Wait staff were pleasant and attentive. It included a very small over cooked lobster tail that you needed a ticket provided by the waitress that you presented to a man overseeing the buffet. High point : cornbread was very good. I can't see going back. There are to many good restaurants in Old Forge that I would rather try!! read more

My husband and I went to dinner here a few weeks ago. We ordered the potato skins and lobster tacos for apps, and the pork chop special and steak for our meals. Everything was fantastic. The portions were large, and my husband kept raving about the lobster tacos. Our waiter was friendly and nice, and the service was quick. We came here last summer with a group of people, and all 6 of us had ordered the prime rib special, and everyone was super happy with their meals. Although I miss the soup and salad we used to get at the old mill the food is excellent now! read more

I literally wish I could give negative stars. I have never in my life seen a restaurant run so poorly with such inept staff. We made a reservation for a party of 8, showed up a week later for the reservation only to be told that they don't take reservations. They claim they told the waitress who took our reservations to call us back and tell us that but she never did. The hostess blatantly acknowledged she saw our name on the list and still didn't make sure we were called. There was no apology, no attempt to rectify or anything. Just you are out of luck. We attempted to go back a couple of weeks later to give them another chance because we love to support local businesses. We walked in and asked for a table for 6. We were told to hold on, the hostess went and chatted with friends at a table for 4 mins. At least 3 different waitresses walked past us and no one even acknowledged us. The hostess came back and said it will take 10 mins. We said fine (even though you could easily see numerous empty tables). A part of 4 came in behind us and was told it would be 10 mins to put silverware on the table. Yes... 10 minutes to put silverware on a table. They left and went to eat in the bar. Then the hostess actually said to us I don't see a way to seat 6 people. THERE WERE LITERALLY NUMEROUS EMPTY TABLES THAT COULD FIT US!!! We said thanks and walked out. I just can not believe a business is run this way. Both times we were good size parties that would be good money. They just didn't seem to care. We eat out 3 times every weekend and will never go there again. We went to Thendara Pines, had a great meal as usual and actually ran into other people there that were very unhappy with The Old Mill also. read more

I wanted to like this place, it's been around for years, it's where my grandparents got married but there are just too many issues. First is the wait time. We came in and told we'd be seated In about 35 minutes. An hour and 35 later we finally sat down (although we had a party of 6). We ordered our food and it took a while. When I got my food it was extremely over cooked. I asked for my burger to be cooked rare, what I got was well done, I sent it back and had It re-made. It turned out to be only mediocre. We went to Old Forge for our yearly visit. We stopped into the Mil for dinner. We ordered our food and while we were waiting there were house flies all over the place. People sitting next to us went up and told the staff and they gave them a fly swatter. All they said was the flies had been bad this year. Now this was inside the restaurant. I could see if you choose to sit outside but this was real bad. It is a shame because the food was not that bad and our service was good. We will not be going back there any time soon. read more

Old Mill is one of the few restaurants in the Old Forge/Thendara area that tries to be somewhat upscale, though in an Adirondack tourist town that doesn't mean it's anything even remotely like an upscale restaurant in a city. That being said, we go there once a summer when we're on vacation, and have always had good food and service. As others have noted, it's priced beyond what you would normally pay for the same meal elsewhere. But as a frequent visitor to the area, I understand why it's unavoidable--the tourist season lasts from the end of June to the end of August, so businesses have to make money when there are actually people in town. Anyhow, the service has always been attentive but not overbearing. The food leans towards an American menu, heavy on the beef and chicken. You'll see most people there in anything from shorts to dressed up, but casual dress predominates. We're always happy to go when we're in town. read more

We have eaten here twice in the last few weeks and this place is great. Owner/host, Adam was very welcoming. We ate in bar which is tastefully decorated in beautiful Adirondack decor. My hubby has had the southwest burger and said it's the best burger he has ever had. I've had the prime rib sandwich and tonight the black and blue salad. We had dinner at The Old Mill tonight. The restaurant is under new management. The selection and quality of the food is horrible!!! Prices were also greatly inflated. The bowl of Seafood Chowder had almost no seafood and was way too salty. The King size prime rib was 1/3 fat and very tough. The sweet potato fries were good. The mixed veggies that came with the meal were so-so. The homemade salad dressings were missed. The best part of the meal was the great service! read more

Depressed. Been coming here for 30 years and they changed the entire menu and you no longer get the family style soup and salad. The bread is very good but is now served cold. If you're going there on a date do not sit in the dining room. This place serves you family style, which would be fine except that two people really don't need a tureen of soup. It's made for groups of at least 4. My clams casino was both dry and over-salted. I'm suspicious that it was something they bought frozen, then just reheated. However, the bar is great for an evening date with a very Adirondack feeling fireplace and low lighting. I have enjoyed the bar section with groups of 2-5 people to sip wine and enjoy the fireplace. read more

So Ill start by saying the food looked great and our experience stopped there. We started off with a 30 minute wait, not bad so we went to the bar for a drink. Now the place wasn't busy at all. The floor had open tables all over the place but were told the kitchen was behind. We then sat at the bar for 10 minutes before being asked if we wanted anything to drink. We were never followed up with or asked if we wanted another drink. Its now been over an hour so I went and checked in and was rudely told they in-fact didn't even have a cook on staff. She couldn't tell me when we would be sat or if we would even get our food. My wife and I left as did 6 other parties and went someplace else. Id like to offer some advice. If your food tastes as good as it looks you have a great thing going but if you don't replace your staff you'll be closed by this time next year. read more

Not a great experience and the food was not good. The young girl did a good job servicing us and that was the highlight of the experience . We had fish fry, salad along with kids chicken tenders and French fries. They charge for refilling sodas which I don't know of any place that does that. There were flies inside of the bar where we continued to try to swish away the whole time. The dining area wasn't open yet. Don't order anything with their home made tortillas. They taste like cardboard. Overall, I would try and find another place to eat if in old forge. Cannot recommend this place. read more

Have been going here for years, always a great experience. Not anymore! Another new owner with the idea that they are are going to make a bunch of changes that benefit them. The food was absolutely terrible and it took 2 hours to get it! The waitstaff was friendly but they were helpless to do anything about the kitchen fiasco. The sad part......only 3 tables were occupied in the whole place! For the new owner, look a few hundred yards down the street at what used to be the "Muffin Patch"! At one time the busiest, most vibrant restaurant in the Adirondacks. It's gone now, not even a trace! Another case of a new owner who felt that crappy food and poor service would make him rich. Unfortunately I have to state the same comment as John. Our family has been coming to Old Forge for almost 15 years and always look forward to the Old Mill. We were not aware of the new ownership and right from the start we were disappointed with the extremely abbreviated menu. The old menu was a bit big, but have some great comfort food options, along with the great soup and salad option! Our waitress was very pleasant in telling us that the new owners decided to eliminate this offer. The drinks took almost over 10 minutes to arrive from the bar, with the apology that the bartender was busy talking to other bar guests (restaurant was not busy at all). Our meals were decent, but some options were a bit overpriced for the area. As we were enjoying our meal, it appeared the restaurant was about to close as the music was shut off and candles blown out (we were the only table in the restaurant) Overall, we were extremely disappointed that the new management has decided to eliminate the comfort food options and great environment to save a few bucks. We will certainly reconsider making this restaurant apart of our future trips up here. read more

The customer service and food quality were extremely disappointing. During our most recent trip, the kitchen forgot to prepare my wife's order. After a quick apology, they promised it would be only a 10 minute delay. After 15 minutes, the steak arrived raw but seemingly seared on the outside. We politely asked for some more cook time after waiting 5 minutes for our waiter to return. The meal returned after several minutes - well after the rest of our party had finished their meals. The compensation they offered during the meal was a free soda, since they don't offer refills on soft drinks. My wife was fine with her water and we just wanted to finish and pay. When we paid the bill, they offered no compensation and didn't even acknowledge the service failure, despite a delay of at least 30 minutes. After kindly reminding the manager of the delay, they discounted her meal by $7 - which was less than 5% of our total bill. read more

I love the atmosphere of this place, has a great Adirondack ambiance. The food is good but way overpriced & the menu isn't great. If they considered adding more options to the menu & the prices were more average we would definitely eat here more often when we are in town. I' d love to see this place make those few changes as I loved coming here as a kid but now as an adult with a family we go for something more affordable. read more

Terrible.The food is over priced and mediocre, and they cut corners to save money. With the family-style soup pots (charming concept) we strongly suspect they re-use the unfinished portion left in the pot. Service was lackluster to the point of rudeness. When I asked a fairly simple question about our bill in a polite and respectful manner, the manager lost his cool and berated us, argued with us and generally behaved in an extremely rude fashion. Needless to say we will not be going back. If you're looking for a great experience in the Old Forge area, I recommend Van Auken's Inne. Lovely service, kind people and great food! read more

Immediately entering Old Forge this restaurant greets you. Looks rustic on the outside and is inviting. Restaurant has many booths and tables. Big separate bar. Small outdoor patio. Has been here for years. There have been changes over the years and some things have stayed the same. The meals still come with all you can eat salad and soup. The salad is fresh and simple, a few cherry tomatoes, a few cucumber slices, a few rings of red onion. Dressings come to the table in big mason jars. They are fresh and tasty. The soups are all hearty. Tonight the soup was a creamy cheese tortellini Alfredo. Never had that before anywhere. Good and tasty. The special tonight was a roasted pork loin. Simple home made preparation. Small baked potato was obviously held in a warming oven for a time. Other dinners looked and tasted fine according to my companions. Not OMG good, but met expectations based on menu descriptions. The prices are what you pay for an upscale dining experience Upstate. But some things are not consistent with the price: paper placemats. The dinner rolls are not warm and are store bought and are in a basket with saltine crackers in cello. Butter on the table is in individual very small sealed servings. Service was friendly. Place is clean. read more

Definitely experienced better. To start, we waited almost 10 minutes to have a waitress come out. Miced drinks had minimal vodka. When our salad arrived, there was a huge hair in it, which the waitress saw and replaced. Then our chicken wings arrived with no blue cheese and the waitress didn't come back until it was time to deliver our food, so we didn't have a chance to ask for any. When our food came, the chicken was over cooked and very unappetizing. The vegetables came from a can, similar to those I've seen in daycares. For $18.25 I expect at least fresh veggies. When the waitress asked how it was and we responded "eh, not the best we've had" and she said "oh.... sorry, I didn't cook it" and walked away, that sealed the deal that we definitely will never be back. Quaint, dark, rustic setting complete with fireplaces. Separate dining area and bar room seating. Two menus to order from. Dinner menu was extremely pricey. My tasty BBQ platter was $24. Came with soup and salad. Salad was good, but mushroom soup was bland and watery. Onion soup is an option but costs extra. House wine $6. Lots of other wine choices. My husband ordered a reuben off the "bar" menu that came with fries. It was very good and reasonably priced. Dinner for two with one wine and one bottled beer was $55. Waitress was great. Just too expensive for us to return here, especially when there are other excellent, less expensive restaurants nearby. read more
