There is a special place in my heart for this grimy, sloppy, beautiful dive of a bar. And, my friends, I'll tell you why: It's honest about its true nature. You'll never be disappointed. On the contrary, this dark and seemingly suspect corner of Gastown is part after-work-watering hole, part sports bar, part arcade, and even part karaoke bar! In a city full of overpriced drinks, you won't spend your whole paycheck here! Or... actually, you might if you're having too much fun. But they have wine, they have beers on tap, they have LOTS of liquor, very strong mixed drinks, and tons of specials! There is always something to save you money and get you drunk! How thoughtful is that?? It actually has good bar food. Yeah, the nachos are a little dry. It's a bar! It's not advertising a Michelin star! But every time I've had real food here - burgers, fries, tacos - it's been decent. Sometimes they'll have deals including a pint with fries or nachos! The staff are way nicer than you'd expect. The bartender(s), of course, are super busy and it's sometimes necessary to fight your way to a drink. But the waitresses are great! Especially on week nights they're chatty and fun. OMG THE KAROKE. The host for the karaoke is the best EVER! He's up in a booth and can find literally any song you want - no song book necessary. He WILL hook you up and he WILL make you have a great time! There's no stage, so you're just singing all among each other, which is less pressure. And I always end up making drunk karaoke friends. Plus, there's ski-ball, tvs for sports games, nostalgic hip hop nights... what's not to love, honestly??? Some of the most fun nights I've had have started and ended here. Classic dive bar, dark and dingy, worn and grimey... but great drink prices and the hot dogs are amazing (just wish they had more toppings such as sauerkraut, onions, etc). There's a DJ and small dance floor, some arcade games, pool table and tables to sit at. Some nights it can be very dead but weekends usually decent. Non pretentious and all types of clientel here, a good alternative to the Cambie if its too packed. If you're on a budget but still want a fun night out, this is definitely one of the cheaper options in the city. One of gastown's hidden gems for sure. read more

WORST PLACE EVER. I live in the area of this pub. I was looking for places to play pool. I went inside. There was only about 4 other people inside. It was a Wednesday night around 8 pm. I walk up to the bar; there's an employee with his back to me. He is cutting fruit. He turns around and asks what I want. I ask how much to play a game of pool. He says $2. I order a coke. Now, every bar, I ever went to, served a standard-size glass; which is ounces16 ounces, for beer or a pop. At funky winker beans, I paid $3 for a 16-ounce glass of pop. At The Metropole Pub, they charged me $3 for an 8-ounce pop. RIDICULOUS. I asked why the glass that size cost so much. he said they had to make up for the cheap beer. Ok, fine; well, not fine, but I wanted to play a game of pool. I checked out the pool table and it had a tear where the rack is set up. I told him that I couldn't play pool on that pool table and asked why the owner didn't replace it. He said, in a condescending voice, that hundreds of people play pool on that table and didn't complain. I said it was because they were all drunk, spun around before he could make another condescending remark and walked out the door. read more

Paid for a double rum and coke, put the money down on the bar, the bar manager took my money, than refused me service, accused me of being disrespectful because I commented on their Interac policy, and then got a bouncer to kick me out, refused to give me my money back even tho I consumed 0 alcohol, and banned me from the bar. This is a dingy bar with cheap drinks, and that's it...the customer service skills are about the same you'd expect from the drug addicts on the streets that infest this neighbourhood. I would give 0 stars if that's an option, as these illegitimate scum bags deserve to have their establishment closed immediately! read more

He played a lot of quality old school hip hop and RnB (TLC, Aaliyah, Jay-Z, Missy Eliott, Montel Jordan, etc). and the drinks were super cheap. I liked how this place is really casual and there is no pressure at all to dress up. My tip: Come early (before 10:30pm) for some drinks and avoid paying cover! read more

I am a man child therefore I am easily distracted. Much as a six year old is unable to walk past the entrance of a Toys R Us so am I drawn to the Met. Part arcade, part sports bar and all divey goodness. Wandered in on a Monday during the world juniors quarterfinals. Seating at the bar was at full capacity with what I assumed were regulars, drinking beer, talking smack and cheering on our kids. Since the rest of the place was vacant and I'm not one to pass on cheap drinks or questionable company, they let me squeeze in. Rarely have I had this much fun in the company of strangers. I guess seedy would be the word to use here, but I prefer humble. Non-descript and average from the outside, The Met is exactly what you would expect for being located right in between Gastown and the Downtown Eastside, sort of a rich girl / poor boy thing. Kind of run down, it's still got this classic feel, simple and small town, the opposite of hip. In fact, it's the kind of place you picture when listening to Journey or Bob Seger songs. Which also usually happen to be playing inside, especially on karaoke night. That's another thing, the song selection for karaoke is perhaps the very best in the city, sung by both the younger crowd doing Brian Adams and some old lonely guy singing "My Way" by Frank Sinatra . The cheap ambiance and the respect for an older generation has kept it looking like a legion, but that just means that there's no cover to get in. It's right on the metaphorical railway tracks of two very different neighborhoods, and as long as you're capable of showing respect to both groups you can dress like a bar star or street person and party like an alcoholic. read more

My friends and I have been coming to this bar regularly for over two years now and it's one of our favourites! When we first started coming here it was after a long stint with bars on Granville st, and The Pint. We were extremely fed up with badly mixed top 40 and extremely overpriced drinks. $15 for a double highball made my wallet want to cry. Finding The Met was like a god send. It's a total dive bar so keep that in mind.. the toilets are usually out of service and something will be broken. The drinks are cheap and you never have to wait too long to get service. For the people that complain about the service here....you must be doing something wrong. I've only ever watched people get kicked out if they were too drunk or were being rude to staff. The music varies night by night as they have different DJs on the weekend/tuesday. Friday nights are a good mix of music all across the board. You'll get house, top 40, 90's..the list goes on. Saturday nights are a good mix as well but if you've been once... you've heard it all. I feel like at this point I could tell you exactly what song is going to be mixed with what for the whole evening. The DJ is good but needs to find new music. Sundays are pretty slow but they have mariokart and a mostly empty dance floor so the DJ can take requests. The only thing you need to know before you go is that the floors are sticky. Don't wear shoes you might lose because the floor will claim them and you will never want them back. read more

A no-frills, cheap but tidy pub that makes you feel welcomed. The food is not gourmet, but at these prices and this fun environment, a lot of fancy is quickly overlooked. $2.25 APPIES!? Yes. It's true. I found this out on Thursday night when I came in with a large group. The appies are on special from 3-10pm every day (I think?) and there is a pretty good selection! I decided on the big soft warm salty pretzel with spicy mustard. SOOO good. Everyone kept stealing chunks of it. You can also order it with a side of cheese sauce if you want. Other things I saw on the appy list included onion rings, chicken wings and mac n cheese (Yup.) and tons more.. check the online menu! There is also a $6 burger + beer deal every day. Not sure how long they've been owned by the Donnelly Group, but the inside has totally changed since my last visit. Now it looks identical to every other bar owned by them. All the tables and stools are really high up. Everything is black. I'll be back to take advantage of their cheap eats. read more

We went to The Met on Friday night after a late work party. I appreciate that it's not the cookie cutter Donnelly Group place (I don't like how all the others have the exact same menu). However, like all the other Donnelly places, this pub doesn't stay a pub at night and goes into club mode. When we arrived at the door, the bouncers were ejecting a couple of people. I patiently waited, and when it seems clear to approach, the bouncer told me he wasn't letting anyone else in. I turned and began talking to my coworkers informing them that we weren't going to get in. Next thing I new, a couple of my coworkers were being let in, so I lined up behind them. The bouncer looks at me again and says, "I told you, I'm not letting you in." So I say, "But you're letting my friends in." Without a retort, I was let in, completely bitter about the guy singling me out. I could understand if he said I was over-dressed (I was still business casual from work and subsequent in-office party) or I'd already had enough (I had been drinking at the work party for about eight hours), but it was simply a senseless thing that instantly became a bad first impression. Inside was ideal. While I don't like clubs to begin with, I liked that it wasn't over crowded. I wasn't getting bounced around in the throng of steroid monkeys and bar stars all wanting to be seen in bad lighting to go home with someone too drunk to care. The line up at the bar was only one deep, so getting my first round was quite quick and easy on the wallet. Subsequent rounds were just as quick, and appreciate that the bartenders were able to pour my meticulous rye and cokes to my standards without any issues. I hung out for a couple of drinks before I got tired of the really loud music and decided to finally call it a night. After I headed out and crossed the street to catch a cab, the bouncer ran up to me and grabbed my things. Apparently, this genius didn't see me bring my lunch bag and party remnants into The Met, so now I'm being brought back to the door to be searched. After explaining where I'd been before coming here, that I'd brought this stuff with me, and I was purchasing whatever I was consuming from the bar, he still wasn't satisfied and kept searching. After he was done, I was permitted to leave. It was really weird, like he wanted me to pick a fight with him because he was being a complete douche, but he wouldn't cross the line with any pushing or confiscation of goods. It just wasn't cool that he grabbed my stuff out of my hands from across the street. The bouncer alone is enough for me to give The Met one star. This place gets two stars only because I had a half decent time once inside, even for a pub that turns into a club (plub?). Their saving grace is that they've got some half decent reviews on Yelp otherwise. Because of this, I am willing to give The Met one more shot, but only when it's in full pub mode. If they screw that up, I will never be back, and ensure that everyone who works with me in Gastown will know what my experiences have been here. read more

I love the Met. Perhaps it's my humble roots that favour a non-pretentious atmosphere, or the $8 veggie burger w/ chips. Or perhaps it's the goth staff serving a sporty crowd with a smile on all the same. All these things make me happy. The Met even takes reservations for major sporting events when most places won't. Awesome! I know it caused controversy when The Donnelly Group bought the pub last year. I felt much happier to come here when I found out that TDG donates 25% of their profits to charities based into the Downtown Eastside. So drink up, you're doing the local community good. read more

On a Thursday evening, there were lots of people, enough to feel like a party, but not so many that it was too crowded. Lots of places to sit. The music was at a volume where conversation was still totally possible. -25 points for the pee trough in the guys' bathroom. I went to the Metropole on a Tuesday night after having stayed away for years because of the sketchy location and the super sticky floors. Dancing should not be a mission. While I enjoyed the early Tuesday night atmosphere better for a small gathering of friends, there were a couple of things I had to note. There were only about four groups in the bar when we showed up for drinks and it was still difficult at times to flag down a server. This place turns into a club at some point and we got booted out of our table to make way for coat check. The heat needs to be turned way up or the door kept closed because I was in a sweater and boots and still needed to put back on my scarf and mittens to stay warm. And, absolutely none of the door's on the women's washroom stalls lock, so you need to bring a friend to guard the door. I doubt I'll be back. read more

I went here a couple of months ago after hearing a lot of reviews about it--I was in search of a pub that had a foosball table; at the time this was the only one I'd come across. So, we went there with a couple of friends and generally had a very mediocre time. Maybe I'm getting old, but if the music is so loud that you need to yell to just hear the other person, then that isn't really a good time. The beers were overpriced--both the local pitchers as well as the bottles. The foosball table was pay-to-play, which would have been fine, except each game is $2 (and each game only lasts a couple of minutes). It was pretty cramped, but we managed to get a table--however, in the middle of our night, we were asked to move so that they could make the area we were sitting at into a dance floor. If I were to do it all over again, I'd probably choose having a drink in the park and throwing rocks around instead. I doubt I'll ever be going back here, unfortunately. read more

The Met is one of the Donnellys that has managed to retain its own vibe best, I think. It's still a DTES dive bar with incredibly low prices, but Donnelly has brought in some local craft beers (they have Driftwood on tap) to augment the cheap beer selection. I haven't tried the food, but I love the menu concept here - it's separated into $2, $4, and $8 plates (if I remember correctly). The met used to be my long time friday night hangout spot in my early twenties. I was really into drum and bass music. Well those days are gone and I hadn't been to the met for years when I was invited for a mustache party last week. Sure, it was a wednesday night but it sounded like fun! It was! I really miss the old Met a lot. The old Metropole had this lovely divey charm that has since come and gone. It was the type of place where you could walk in wearing whatever you want and you'd never be judged. It was like Cheers; the kind of place where you see the same people every time you visit. After they renovated, they tried to make the Met into something that it isn't. I feel like the only things that separate the old Met from the new are several new TVs, higher priced drinks, and an allure that only a bro could love. They used to have those DJs that were so incredibly bad but were still somewhat charming. Now they're just plain bad. It's a really sad fact that the only thing that is reminiscent of the old Met is the sticky floor. read more

These days I only show up for a mid-afternoon beer and a half dozen games of Whitewater or Twilight Zone pinball - but for that, it definitely serves it's purpose. Cheap and Cheerful, w/o the cheerful... Nice try on the appies and prices but don't mind paying a bit more for something more edible. No cheese with the mini burger, so tried again on the big burger. No cheese. Think they were out of cheese. Honey lager were like apple juice after two sips. Washing your pint glasses with loads of disinfectant can do this. But the worst bit is, the smell of deep frying fat, still in the clothes we were wearing. A walk home didn't help get rid! Over. read more

Besides always having a great night at the Met, I recently lost my phone on a night out at the Met and one of the employees saw a bum trying to sell it on the street. She was a White Knight and took the phone from the bum and told him to scram. Things like this don't go unnoticed. read more

Last night was the grand re-opening of Metropole .. with it's flashy neon lights on the outside (so I do not know if the current picture shown on yelp justifies itself). I've never been to the old MET, but walking in - it reminded me exactly of the Lamplighter in Gastown, except smaller. Music was pumping and there was a large crowd with some dancing and others playing games in the back, or watching sports updates on the TVs. Staff was friendly, drinks were great... so all is good :) read more

After Honey Lounge shut down, my new favorite dancing discover has been The Met... and as I write this, I realize it's a Donnelly group pub from Malloreigh M.'s review. Anyone who knows me, knows I am anti-Donnelly. However, I never would have been able to tell this was a Donnelly group establishment as it lacks that douche-y vibe that most of the Donnelly group establishments I have been to have. And it's not expensive at all (both cover, and drinks). The DJs rotate and play awesome music on Fridays switching between top 40s, house/techno, and old school hip hop. Will be coming here often. read more

Great dive bar we found on our Gastown adventure. This is a real honest dive with real regulars and a solid staff. Avoid the "Funky" next door (they wanted a $10 cover for four metal bands and the place was EMPTY). Anything east of here is pretty shady. Cheap drinks! read more

Quaint and crazy karaoke bar. It has a lot of character- me likes that! It's dark, you've got a hodge podge of high tables with bar stools and low tables with mismatched chairs. Random hockey stuff on the walls, off to the sides you have some sports on TV. It's all pretty random. Karaoke is the thing to do here. It's free, so why not. You'll be sure to hear a Beatles tune, some 90s rap, a few surprising songs, and a few BAD ones. Expect some liveliness from the audience. i.e. dancing on the table, coming up and singing with you, etc. Bar is ok, limited on the beer options. Food menu looked standard and cheaply priced, but I didn't order anything, so can't fully review that yet. read more

The place is a dump with a diverse crowd. The bartenders have been excellent everytime ive been in here, knowledgeable, friendly attentive. They have a ping pong table and some other things. the bar attracts friendly singles who come in for a chat. The only problem I have is the drinks aren't cheap if their not on special . A friend and I ordered two double rye and coke, well rye 7.75. They do have a lot of specials but nothing on when I was there. The special seem to change every time im in here so its hit and miss. We came by one Friday and they were charging cover. We walked. If their charging cover and don't have any specials hit the cambie for your dive fix. Otherwise its a cool little bar. read more

Having been a Vancouverite for 30+ I am sad to say that never heard of, or knew or the Metropole Pub. I was attracted by the cheap eats ($2.25 Appies 3-10) and multiple screens for Canuck viewing. The food is best reserved for AFTER many beverages, Great deal , but a great deal in the 7-11 Burrito at 2 am type of deal. Good value, lots of cheap eats, and good bar selection. The washrooms could use a renew I think one even might be missing a door, but you get what you pay for.
