ive been to the mermaid cafe dozens of times and my family and i LOVE it. the food as well as service has gotten so much better in the past year and i think that is in part to the new management. the food quality and the overall attitude of the staff has steadily improved. after reading the extremely long review below, i wanted to point out several discrepancies. my family and i dined at the mermaid this past weekend and i ordered the fried shrimp platter and boy it was not anything like the review suggested. it was piled with about 20 perfectly fried shrimp, shoestring fries and some of the best hush puppies ive had around here. there was NO salty butter sauce anywhere in sight. i too ordered an additional side of sauce and additional side item. since the menu plainly states what comes with the entree, i was not at shocked that i had to pay for it. no way would i ever expect to dine anywhere and order additional sides that are not charged for. some people never cease to amaze me with the silly things they get upset about. "you mean if i want something extra, i have to pay for it??" crazy right? NO!! the fried catfish platter is one of my favorites and for good reason. the catfish is from simmons farm in Yazoo and it is very thinly sliced before fried crispy. i have never gotten an "overcooked" order of catfish. maybe the person in the same review is used to thick cuts of catfish that end up soggy before you have time to finish your meal. usually when i bring large groups to the mermaid, which i do often, there are at least 3-4 people that get the catfish platter and never once has it been anything but delicious. there has only been one time when one of my friends had a problem with her meal and when the so called "scowl faced" general manager approached the table he was quick to realize my friend hadnt really touched her entree and he inquired as to why. there wasnt anything wrong with the dish, she had tried eating salmon for the first time and simply didnt care for it. the manager, Matt, removed the plate and insisted that she order something else so that she was satisfied. she ordered the annies chicken which only took about 5-6 minutes before it was on the table in front of her (and less than 10min before there sat an empty plate in front of her). He then chatted with everyone at the table and actually made the dining experience much better by giving us a couple recipes of my wife's favorite sauces that have been used in the past. to me, it doesnt get any better than the mermaid cafe. the person in the review must have too much time on her hands to bash an establishment by her interactions with the manager. every time ive been to the mermaid i always see Matt clearing tables, helping servers and carrying on conversations with all the customers. 5 stars!! read more

My girlfriends and I recently went out and had dinner at the Mermaid cafe. It had a beautiful view of the lake, and we love sitting outside while sipping on our wine. The food was delicious, but our server was a bit snarky! She gave us waters and told us she would be right with us, but 10 minutes had gone back and nothing. Then when we told her we were ready to order, she had an attitude and told us she needed a minute. The place was not busy, actually people were starting to leave for the night. When we finally got our food delivered to us, asked for extra dressing for my salad. She walked off and brought back my dressing then said, "Anything else?". Like I was being an inconvenience. Loved the food and atmosphere but next time I'll ask for a different server. read more
