I should not have waited until the day-of to locate an anniversary gift for my wife, but I honestly didn't have the great idea until the night before. I called all over town looking for a very specific piece of china. My call to The Menagerie was far-and-away the best call that I made. They went out of their way to help me locate what I was looking for. They combed through their stock to find something that fit the criteria that I had, but it wasn't quite the design that I wanted. Then, they were happy to refer me to another business in town that I would have never thought of calling -- one that multiple web searches did not turn up. After looking online, at multiple shops in Austin and in San Antonio I bought an engagement ring at the Menagerie. They were able to procure multiple diamonds within the specs I provided within just days of my request days for me to check out. They were able to provide the exact diamond I'd been looking for within just 7 days of my initial meeting Vicki and Josh. Something seems to be getting lost in translation in Yelp's coverage here. The Menagerie is the best jewelry and finery retailer in Austin, period. Its owner, Vickie Roan has run the business for 20+ years with her daughters and a dedicated team of experts. Four years ago I bought a gorgeous vintage engagement ring there. She still remembers my name when I see her, and she always sends me handwritten Christmas cards. There are a few other excellent boutique jewelers in town. The common trait they share is sincerity. Sure, they would like to make a sale, but never without thoughtful consideration for my motive and my needs. The Menagerie's inventory probably favors value rather than the latest trends. The Menagerie is the perfect neighborhood small town jeweler with large city selection. Leslie and Vickie deliver one on one customer interaction that is lacking from so many places these days. My husband originally took me by the shop several years ago in search of an engagement ring. We spent many months looking for a unique vintage piece and Leslie worked with us patiently and diligently. She kept us informed of specific dealers coming in to the shop and over time we were able to find the perfect setting. I've registered here for my bridal registry. They have the most precious, one of kind pieces. I didn't like any china sets in regular stores because they were all one pattern and too 'matchy'. My fiancé and I were looking for something a little unique and non-traditional for her engagement ring. We had a loose idea of what we wanted in a ring. I contacted several other jewelers in the area and most were not interested or willing in procuring the gemstone (a Paraiba tourmaline) that we wanted to see. Though the Menagerie did not have one on site, Josh was able to procure several beautiful options in less than a week. Not only was Josh able to procure the type and size of gem we were interested in, he showed us several other options that we had not even considered before. This year marked a significant birthday and I wanted to have a ring designed for the special day. I don't review often, but my experience is so different from the existing review, I feel compelled. I have never experienced anyone being snobby or unhelpful. It has been quite the opposite. From the first time I went in a few months back to investigate china patterns, I was greeted cordially and a ton of time was devoted to answering my questions and helping direct my search. Sharon even gave me a great homework tip to make sure that I could figure out the style I would want. When I found patterns online that they didn't have in the store, Vickie ordered them in for me to see before determining my final registry. In contrast, Breed and Co. just said "we don't carry that" and had no follow-up comments or questions for me. read more

The best thing about The Menagerie is its top level customer service. I found an amazing and unique wedding ring among their great selection. They ordered and shipped the ring to my address in Philadelphia. The ring was too big and I felt badly having to go back to them to exchange it, but Leslie was so reassuring and on top of things. She re-ordered a smaller size and the Menagerie covered the shipping costs. Their main concern was getting me the right ring and making sure that I was completely satisfied! Because of this excellent customer service I decided to open a bridal registry there on my next visit to Austin several months later. Kelsey spent a lot of time with me and my mom to pick out the right dinnerware and we ended up with some really special things that you can't find at the big box stores. They gave us a bottle of champagne and celebrated with us. Every time someone bought a gift on the registry, I received a hand-written card in the mail with the item and the buyer's message. These personal touches go a long way for a great experience. I kept in contact with Kelsey by email afterwards to make changes and she was always very helpful. I did have some issues with the website, especially since they switched over their website during my engagement, but the staff was always helpful in sorting things out. I would definitely encourage other brides to consider adding a Menagerie registry because the customer service makes for a completely different experience and the unique and high-quality pieces you'll find make it worth it. read more
