This place has been on my radar to try for a long time, and I was finally able to swing by on a Sunday at lunch time. There was one other couple ahead of me, and only one person working, so I did wait a bit, which was fine since I needed to peruse the menu. There are a few tables inside to eat at, but I chose one of the three outside tables. After conferring with the couple in front of me, I decided to go with the Mezze platter - your choice of 5 items. I thought it was expensive at $24, but it seemed to be the best way to try a wide variety of things. The five items I got, ranked from best to least best: 2 falafels-really good, hummus-very good, cucumber salad-good, cous cous-fine, beet salad-meh. Make sure you ask for the hot sauce - it jazzed everything up. The platter was served with a couple of pieces of pita, but there really needed to be more to dip into all the salads. The only available drinks were to purchase bottled water or bottled soda. I only ate about a third, but I will say it did not travel well. Because three of the salads were placed in the same section, by the next day all three salads were a combined soggy mess, and the only part that was still edible was the hummus. I did enjoy the food, and the worker was incredibly friendly and hospitable, but it was a bit too pricey for one lunch for me. read more

On a mission to find the best falafel in Tampa and we're one step closer! Mediterranean Chickpea literally feels like you're in a family home and someone's cooking you a homemade meal. I'll be honest, I was a little concerned when I saw them put the falafel in the air fryer before serving it to us--I assumed it would be dry and not taste fresh. However, from a scale of "I bought this at the grocery store" to "I'm not in Florida anymore" ... we gave the falafel a solid 3.5!!! It was crispy but not crunchy and pretty moist on the inside. and BRIGHT GREEN! We loved the quinoa salad -- there's dried cranberries or prunes or something like that in it which adds some amazing sweetness. The roasted red pepper hummus was delicious and i'm looking forward to trying the other flavors. So mad I didn't snap a picture, because the food I got here was wonderful! I had the falafel bowl which came with fattoush, lentils, baba ganoush, and pita. Everything tasted super fresh, especially the fattoush. The acidity in it was just perfect. The falafels were deliciously crispy, and even though I hate eggplant, I think I might be a fan now because the baba ganoush was heavenly! One thing I do have to note is that I came on a Sunday at 6 pm after seeing online that they close at 7, but the lady said she was closing right when I got there. Luckily I was still able to get take-out, and maybe this was a one-time thing, but I'd just be careful if you plan to come here at the same time I did. I feel so fortunate and blessed to have experienced so much love, kindness and warmth from the lovely Mouna, owner with her dear husband of the " The Mediterranean Chickpea". This is a classy establishment where Mouna welcomed me like I was family. I was then spoiled with hearty samples of each and every of those beautiful seven hummuses and then the lentil soup. I opted for the Falafel wrap with this crazy good and addicting Cauliflower Babaganoush and this delicious beet salad. The falafel was fresh, the seasoning was perfect, the balance of crunch vs soft was spot on. Everything came together in the wrap so well. I also got the yellow/crushed orange lentil soup that had me dancing in front of the restaurant. The spinach pie inside the fresh bread and sumac was mind blowing. Mouna asked me to dip some of my spinach pie in the soup in addition to the fresh pita chips she had just made. OMG!!!! She then had me try her special Moussaka that had a taste like I had never experienced prior.( the sauce was out of this world). The other items on the menu :mixed Mezze platter, the Mediterranean butter bean stew, the salads - fava bean, tabouli, fattoush, couscous, lentils with sundried tomatoes, white bean; the soups - 2 types of lentil when I visited. The portions are substantial and very generous, an extension of the owner's love. The prices are incredible. The quality - superior to all!! They are closed on Mondays. They accept orders via their website as well. They do provide curbside pick up. I made it to The Mediterranean Chickpea 3 times on this trip to Tampa. BTW Tampa, Florida is about 6550 miles west of the beautiful cities of Alexandria, Damascus and Beirut in the continents of Africa and Asia. I'm not sure what I love more about the Mediterranean Chickpea: Mouna or the food. I have had the pleasure of knowing Mouna for over 7 years. I first met her when she operated a food stand called "Mouna's Delicacies" at a food truck event in Seminole Heights. I was thrilled to hear that she had opened a location in South Tampa. She is just as lovely now as when I met her years ago. She is the kind of person you always remember. She is pure goodness. My opinion of her cuisine still is the same after all these years: DELICIOUS. You really can't go wrong with anything you order. We have tried it all. Our favorites are the Falafel Bowl and the Babaganoush. I stop by here every couple weeks to pick up food to go before I head down to DTSP. The portions of food included with your order are so generous and such a great value. Mouna is consistently working to serve the freshest food to her customers daily. Plus, her food is made with love as you can read and feel from my fellow reviewers. When I walked in (10 minutes late!) that lovely lady was waiting for me so she could heat up my pita for me! She was sweet and so very nice. But that was before I took a single bite. The falafel was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The couscous salad was fresh and crunchy and had just a pop of sweet from the cranberries. The hummus was creamy and tangy and perfect. The serving size was generous, so the price was more than fair. But even though it was delicious and generous, the best part was the delivery. That lovely woman was welcoming and so pleased when I walked in! Absolutely the reception we all hope for when visiting a small, local restaurant. Oh, and VEGAN. Really? Icing on the darn cake.
