I am not one to frequent Gay clubs, as I am a guy and not gay, but I asked the girl at the hotel for a place with music that went "boom boom boom" and she said I had to go to the Max and that there would be plenty of non-gay people and girls there. I was pleasantly surprised to find such a great dance venue in Omaha. As a guy from the "big city" down I-80, I expected a lame night out. Compared to what I am used to, the cover was cheap ($5), the drinks were reasonable (under $5), and the music was banging all night long. There were super hot girls and bachelorette parties going on. Unlike most bars, I got served before them! I didn't have any "getting hit on by gay guys" issues. Unless you were prancing around without your shirt on that was not an issue and the people were friendly. The hip hop room was cool, the dance music room was awesome (superb lighting), and I had a great night. Just don't count on a taxi to pick you up at the door at 2:00am when it closes. Visiting the area from Houston, TX. Is very obvious that Mexican and Middle Eastern people is not welcomed in this club. Since I entered the club the employees at the entrance and bartenders were rude. I guess they have never seen anyone form another country, they never get the opportunity to get out of their hometown. Also, no cards accepted anywhere in the club, just cash. This is the 21st century, this club needs to evolve and align with the new Millenium. I have to say that the club is very clean and beautiful. Usually I'm not a fan of paying covers, but this place was definitely worth the $5 cover for an awesome night. It's a dance club with an AWESOME setup. There is a hip hop room and techno room, which you can rotate between if you wanna change things up. The place was overwhelmingly jam packed this weekend, which is always a good sign. Drinks are a bit pricey, and they have a few pool tables upstairs, so there's something for everyone. If you're a female, I'd also recommend having some sort of "signal" worked out with your girlfriends if a few random guys start getting too close for comfort on the dance floor, which is common in dance clubs. Otherwise, make sure to bring a group of friends along, and prepare for a night of fun! read more

An Omaha staple for great people, music, and dancing! For the most part, Max has everything you'd want in a dance club on a Saturday which the gay boys endearingly call "strait night". I love special events like Gay Idol, Halloween, and Drag competitions. Sunday night drag shows are so much fun! At the Max you can sit and hang in the main bar, play pool upstairs, enjoy hip hop hits in one dance club, chill out on the fabulous outside patio, or dance hard core to the techno hits in the main room. The lights and systems are first class. I give Max a 4 rating for two reasons. 1) In ten years, I've encountered the occasional snooty bartender. 2) If there was one thing I could change about the Max it would be their policy to allow drinks on the dance floor. They serve in glasses and those glasses get broken all over the floor. I've hit wet spots on the dance floor and slid around on occasion. I sprained my ankle on a wet spot a couple years ago which led to 8 months of physical therapy and am living with ongoing ankle discomfort the doctors say will follow me forever as the typical result of the type of injury I incurred. I don't want to end on a negative note because the Max IS a go to for a night out in Omaha! read more

The best thing about this club is walking in at 6:00 p.m. and seeing a throng of drag queens bellied up to the bar! What an image :-) I was a fan of the cheap beer bust and the abundance of room in this place. There were two dance floors, a lounge, a large patio and an upstairs for chillin' out. High marks for the bathroom too - nice and clean. As I am not a fan of clubs it really sucks that they charge a $10 cover so that you can cram onto a hot dance floor. Friends who arrived later had to pay this hefty price so that was a downer. I was surprised at the difference in attendance from 6:00 and 11:00. I just don't think this place is $10 great...so show up early so you don't have to pay. It seemed like a typical crowd for a gay dance club. Lots of guys, lots of straight girls, not a lot of room to move unless you want to slam into some stranger. But, if that's the goal this is the place to be in Omaha. I am straight and this place is still the best in Omaha to me! So as you walk in and pay your cover. It is really easy to be overwhelmed by the music, the people and the atmosphere. I heart the MAX. HUGE venue. The electronic and techno room with amazing lights and effects. There are tables to sit down and have a drink and a huge dance floor, bar and stages if you want to show off your dance moves. The hip hop/R&B has an upstairs lounge and exits to the main indoor lounge area. Front stage and nice dancefloor .This place has bars galore. Every room has a bar. The main lounge has a big screen showcasing some pretty hot bodies. Drool Unisex bathroom Max and Maxine bathrooms. But you must be in drag to go into Maxine I think. $5 dollar cover until 12pm and then it's $10 I think. Also, it depends on the night. read more

Surprisingly large, well spread out "gay" bar. Gay in quotation marks because this place is probably 50/50 straight/gay on the weekends, but everyone is at least gay comfortable. I like that there are 3 distinct areas, an EDM main dance floor, a hip hop side area, and an upstairs lounge with their own mix of stuff, huge outdoor patio where smoking is okay, large, clean restrooms, plenty of places to sit and interesting people to meet. 4 Stars because the bartenders are a little inexperienced and slow as others have mentioned, but a shockingly good gay bar for a small town, better than the average club even in a bigger city for sure. read more

A gay club in Nebraska! The place deserves five stars just for that. Coming from the San Francisco Bay Area, this was a culture shock to me as a gay club. The venue itself and drinks and music and rainbow paraphernalia were familiar, but I have never gone to a gay club in SF with a female majority (or even any females other than me and maybe two others, unless it's labeled as a girl party, which reflects on the androcentrism of the SF LGBT community -- but that's a whole other story :P), that too, all blonde and femme. It looked like a sorority party! One of the women, who was making out with a dude, left him for a moment specifically to approach my brown female friend and me, and say, "I don't normally give compliments, but you two look really good together." We smiled back at her. "...You ARE together, right?" "No," I replied, smiling. "Oh my God, I'm so sorry," she said, and sheepishly retreated to resume making out with her boy. read more

Went here the other night with my wife who was a regular patron with her gay friends in the 90s. The club is immaculate. Great lighting and a purportedly good sound system. One dance floor was closed. The other was open but apparently there was some sort of unofficial office party going on. The bartenders didn't seem to know that there even was a dance floor. Everyone who worked there seemed thoroughly confused about what was going on. It was as if the entire staff woke up in an amnesiac state, handling their jobs as mere reflexive involuntary actions while they tried to figure out what their names were and where they are. To make a long story short... Cash bar is ridiculously priced. $16 for two shots and a rum and coke. $2.50 for a 6 oz. soda. Refills on the soda? Nope. $3.00 for a 12 oz red plastic Solo cup of beer. I've heard that this place has a storied history and a monumental legacy in the gay community as being the standard-bearer for the midwest club scene. After spending some time reconciling what we remember from the 90s with today, I think it's safe to suggest that the legend of The Max has become more of a tall-tale and something for patrons to wax nostalgic upon while hoping for something better... read more

The air conditioning is very bad! It always fell the humidity and heat everywhere. So don't spend your time in make-up or fancy clothes bcs is not worth it. My third time visiting there from Puerto Rico and always the same problem with the air conditioning. Also the bar needs more employees read more

In from out of town to visit friends. Found The Max to be a great club with great music, however who do you need to screw to get a drink!! I waited for 45 minutes the first time to get served and 35 minutes the second time. HORRIBLE!!! They CHARGE for WATER... We had a good night and everything but when it was about an hour before 2 we asked for some basic water. And they were charging nearly $3 for a water!!! Every other bar gives it for free. I will never return to the max ever again!!! read more

The music and lights/lasers are exactly what you want when you're dancing in a sweaty group on a Friday night or taking your shirt off, alone on the "stage." When they jack the lights up to 11 from almost complete darkness it feels like a slap in the face. The good kind! The rest of the building could be better lit, seriously folks at least towards the floor. Just when you get used to going up and down stairs in the dark they throw a ramp in for the heck of it. I started coming here 8 years ago, I NEVER grow tired of it, because every time I go I see new people gay, straight, couples, singles, groups, parties!! There are 5 places to go: upstairs which is more of a video/relax bar, the Arena which has more hip hop/dance music, the main bar which is in the middle, the techno room which has more 80's, 90's type music to dance to, a small bar link to the patio where you smoke/sit outside/ enjoy the night. There are small event almost everyday of the week, so its ALWAYS open. Every area has a FULL bar and a bartender whose makes good drinks. After a couple times going you will find your favorite! Who knows you may even run into the man or woman of your dreams, I did 4 years ago and still going STRONG! read more

My friend and I came in on a Saturday night during CWS. The bartender saw us and turned his back to us and never even acknowledged our presence. We waited and waited, even though they were not busy, while he continued to ignore us and have his convo with 2 other customers. The few customers there, were male. This place is off the hook! I live in Chicago, and gay bars are plentiful here. There's something for every type: some pretentious, some grimy, and some unispired. So when my friend invited me out to The Max (a gay bar in Omaha?! What?!)on a Saturday night, I wasn't expecting much. There are two dance floors, a techno and an urban one, a large patio and bars interpersed through out. The layout of the club is very well thought out. It wasn't as packed as I am used to these bars being, but it was lots of fun. This place was totally worth the $5 cover. Also, compared with what I'm used to, thier drinks were super cheap and stiff. There were also ALL types of people there, which was very nice as well. One minor tiff that I had was the little bit of the "boys-rule-girls-drool" attitude the bartenders showed my lady friends. i love the max. i visited this place after my work's convention was over and it was such a surprise to see a huge space with different rooms to cater to your mood. all done exceptionally. every room and space was classy and i loved the layout of the place. game room/bar type atmosphere? check. jazzy, low light ballroom? check. electro-hip hop main room? check. the dance floor was packed and the drinks were stiff. you will absolutely have no trouble ordering a drink. drinks are cheap in comparison to what i'm used to, so i did NOT hold back. i actually even loved the music. this place really killed a lot of stereotypes regarding omaha according to out-of-towners. i actually love omaha and think it's super-underrated. this place really impressed me. negatives: scarce to no girls-- ahem, i mean femme girls who also like femme girls. and a tip: the ATM next to the first main bar takes soooooo lonnnnnng. i'd recommend going to the bank first. another negative is that the sunken dancefloor to the right of the entrance should have some drunkard-friendly markings on the steps that are clear enough to see through the smoke and strobes. my 6'1 coworker almost busted his pretty little head on the parquet because it wasn't marked enough. or maybe he's just clumsy. :P read more

I went into the Max on a Tuesday night in the middle of late August, not expecting to see very many people. Boy, was I wrong. Around two in the morning, the dance floor was packed, I had already lost two games of pool and one game of darts, and I was extremely drunk off of a cheap beer special that involved plastic cups and 50 cent refills. No joke. I left the Max smelling like cigarettes and grinning because I had no idea there was so much fun to be had in the Midwest on a Tuesday night. The only place to be at night in Omaha, NE. The Max is a large place accommodating to every club goer. The drinks were cheap and the music was great. They even have a wonderful patio to go chill outside and just talk with friends. The DJ knows his stuff and has no shortage of the latest remixes.
