I was a regular here the first year they opened - up until I moved to Boston. Hadn't been back to Omaha in more than 20 years - but was there with my husband, and was really looking forward to showing him a part of my history. Yes, it's changed some - but pretty much all in positive ways! Loved the music and vibes. The bartenders were friendly. Drinks were crazy cheap by Vegas standards. As an older guy now, the most surprising thing was how many college-age straight-ish folkz there were (can't know for sure, of course - but that's what it looked like) It warms my heart to see how friendly, open, and accepting that crowd is. Keep Leading the Charge, Omaha! That being said, I feel that we're losing spaces where just gay men hang out. I miss the sexy, cruisey, brotherly vibe of some of the old haunts. Most of the workers here who handle us party goers on Friday and Saturday: 5 stars. Everything else about this place SUCKS and not in a good way. I go here often and the part the makes a club good is 100% the DJs. The max doesn't have good DJs. They're literally stuck in 2013-2018, playing the same songs, week after week. Nothing is more mood killing then when the DJs play 2-3 really good bops in a row and then they play something that's a complete opposite vibe; example is playing great bad bunny, Karol g, daddy yankee, and then play like a prayer by Madonna -_- please tell me how that goes well together? It's like they don't even want to expand their taste of music and play new things. I kid you not, the music is exactly what you would hear at your middle and high school homecoming dance when everyone would just stand there and talk. It was my first time coming in here, and this place is exactly what I expected based on what I've heard from friends. It is a large dance bar with several dance floors and bars, as well as an outdoor area to sit with a fountain. The location makes this spot difficult to find parking/etc., but most people Uber here which works out fine. We went to the large dance floor to the right of the door and had a good time in a huge crowd, dancing to pop hits from ~10 years ago. I was surprised that this is a cash only spot--we were not prepared so didn't have too much on hand. Overall the drinks were fine--they often overpour, but my biggest complaint was waiting at the bar for about 10 minutes of while we watched others come and go--getting served before us. My guess is these are regulars, as we probably stuck out quite a bit in nicer clothes that we came from a party in. Other than a long wait the service was fine. The good thing about this spot is how unique it is--definitely feels like you are not in Omaha anymore! I can see how a lot of people enjoy the vibe, but it is just not my spot with the music too loud to understand anything, and people bumping into you at every angle. Unsafe bar, hostile staff, not queer friendly for a "gay bar" besides week nights, not physically disabled persons friendly. I've been supporting this business for years, not only weekends, but weekdays and several events. After coming back from moving out of state, im sad to say I'm disappointed with how things are being ran, especially at the door. Our group was dressed nicely, not drunk, not loud, and we were excited to go in to a queer friendly space... we literally talked about it for weeks and even rented a place to stay... i was excited to be with my friends again. To start; the bouncer gave our group, who was walking with a physically disabled queer person on crutches, 20 seconds to check in when there was literally no line outside. This man actually started counting down like a kindergarten teacher would with students. It was 12:56, they told us they close the doors at 1 now. Then told us the bar closed in 20 minutes for drinks but we're still asking for an unexpectedly high cover. Which was concerning for no line or wait time to get in on a Saturday night. Although I'd pay a cover double that price if we were greeted with any respect. Although after we verbalized we didn't like how they were talking to us they started mocking us with statements like "where else are you going to go?" And started talking very poorly on other bars within the downtown area. We felt very bullied and confused. Manipulated even? What happened to community? I thought this was a safe place for queers. Im not exactly sure why the "security" is so aggressive here. If you hate your job that bad, then please find another one. I'm really concerned if those guys have partners or kids at home they take their problems out in like that. They did not make us feel safe at all. Bullied actually. Went with my friend to go to the bathroom to make sure he was safe(we've had issues in the past) when i went into the stall with him the security kicked the door open hitting me with the door, Yelling at us to that we had to leave. I tried to say my friend was peeing and that i had to go and they did not care. Even max personal was there and they still did not listen to us. I tried to explain what was happening and security just said " it's sexual harassment". How is that sexual harrassment? Do they not know the definition of sexual harassment"? He was my friend and consent was there to be there yet they didn't care. Even forced my friend to stop peeing and kicked him out as well for no reason. As i tried to talk to police about it (there was a female police i tried to talk to) she told me to talk to some male police officer. I told her that I (a black male) did not feel comfortable talking to him and she literally said to me "well than i'm not helping you, I'm not playing that game". I said i wasn't playing a game i came to her for help because I felt more comfortable but she just dismissed me. Glad to know the max employees security and police that think that way. I haven't been inside the Max for over thirty years and have no intention of ever going back. I'm not surprised at the staff attitude. Back in the 80s the bartenders always gave special attention the "elite" crowd. They were the superior die-hard regulars there every weekend and that everyone knew. I've heard it's starting to turn into a straight bar. I think that would be karma for the gay crowd taking over the Cave Club back in the 70s. For those not old enough to know, the Cave Club was in the lower level of the Hill Hotel, now known as Kensington Tower. I drove by the building a while back and see the exterior has been painted black. It looks cold, dark, and looming. My partner and I went to this club for a birthday party. We tried to get drinks at the main bar a couple of times. Both times, the bartenders skipped us when taking orders. The first time, we assumed they were just busy and still left a generous tip. In the second instance (after being ignored for awhile and new people coming up were served) we noticed the bar tender was going around the bar instead of serving who had been standing there longest, so we moved to a new spot in his route and we were still skipped over. If you're looking for a place to dance, this is it. There are two main dance floors, the hip-hop and the techno/house side. There are great lighting effects within the dance areas. There is also an upstairs area with pool tables. There are several bars throughout the place to get a drink. Unfortunately, they are often extremely busy. Unless you're a hot looking young guy, I suggest either getting drinks at one of the bars by the dance floors or waiting for someone to serve you on the patio. Otherwise, you'll probably have to wait a bit on drinks. The main bars are usually overcrowded. The drinks can get a bit pricey, and I've also noticed that the price sometimes depends on the bartender. Most of the time, I'll have a few drinks at another bar and then go to The Max to dance... it's not a place to sit around and drink beer. The courtyard outside is wonderful, with lots of places to sit. They even have a water fountain with rainbow lights in it. Most of the servers out here are awesome as well. This place is busy on Fridays, and completely full on Saturdays (often there is a line on Saturdays, so get there early). The Max is always packed for events such as Pride and Halloween, so if you're going then, expect to wait outside in line for awhile. The cover is usually $3 on Fridays and $5 on Saturdays. There are also various nights (such as holidays and drag shows), where there is a cover. There is typically no cover on week nights. They looked at me like I was asking them to sacrifice their first born. I asked another worker if this was the norm, and he was extremely nasty and dismissive to me, so i asked for the manager. The manager said coat check was "full", that they had taken in 350 coats that night, as if that number was meant to be impressive? I said but there are dozens of people leaving and taking their coats. The bar is open for 2 more hours. Surely I can PAY to check my coat. He said "NO that's not how coat check works". Sir I've traveled the world and currently live in NYC for 10 years. Coat check is a curtesy establishments provide to make your clientele feel comfortable and welcome. Until last night. My bestfriend is in town from Oregon and was expecting to have a fun night. We were with a group of 9 other women and one disabled gay man. While we were walking up the the door (12:55 am) their seemingly emasculated security told us they close the doors at 1:00 am and then continued to count down from 20 seconds. After rushing our disabled friend to the doors they then told us that they turn their lights on in 20 minutes and it would be $10/person. While we were between the two sets of door they also took the queue line markers inside (bc they close the doors at 1 right). Our group discussed we didn't think it would be worth our time or money for 20 minutes and their staff rudely said "where else are you going to go?" and "Throwback's cover is $20 tonight". So we decided we would rather go there. Upon us leaving we stopped a few people we knew and told them about the situation to which an actual police officer walked over to us and told us we had to leave. We were literally walking away and they continued to follow us. They also told the 3 men we stopped that they would let them in. The time then was 1:04. Why are you letting people in 4 minutes after you have "closed" your doors? Very weird. Being the smart and sexy people that we are we continued on to Throwback where we were met by a very nice bouncer who kindly told us they not only had no cover but that they've never had a $20 cover. Very unprofessional of your staff to not only be rude to a queer disabled person but to also lie and scam your customers. "LGBTQ friendly" but certainly not. Not women friendly. Not queer friendly. The Max is a safe place that allows for anyone that is 21 and over to have a great time. Hailed as 'The Best Gay Bar in the US' it is difficult not to believe that when you visit. The doorman is nice as are the bartenders. If you are LGBT or if you are not, you are going to have a great night. This place is just right for out of towners and locals alike. The dancing is just like any club scene and most folks will leave you alone if you wish them to. The HipHop room jams out old school cuts from the time when rap wasn't all autotuned Hotline bling shit. It is my favorite place in the building. The drinks are very overpriced and the bartenders (depending which one you get) can be very rude or they'll just downright ignore you. I've only been here once and it was for a Halloween party. There was a costume contest and dancing and just all around good times. I completely enjoyed myself. I know the cover was like $10-20 per person since it was an event, but well worth it. I love the Max. I spent many a nights here in my early 20s, celebrated my bachelorette party and recently got together with some girlfriends for a fun night out. I hadn't been in over 5 years and was thrilled to see the place is still exceptionally well maintained - 2 dance floors, one playing EDM style music and the other many of your favorite rap hits from over the years. They have bars within each of the dance floors, one on a second level with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the place, a large sunken bar on the main level or you can sit and be waited on in the great patio. Speaking of the patio outside - I hadn't spent much time here in the past, but it is a really beautiful setting with some nice landscaping and you are surrounded by the few taller buildings of downtown Omaha so it is nice to take in the views. A few notes - the bars are cash only and be careful with the glass...honestly, I am not sure why they serve all their drinks in glass, I watched someone drop and shatter their drink on the dance floor no less than 4 times and then an employee in a bright shirt would come by quickly and clean things up. He took a phone that wasn't his and when I finally got him to return it he grabbed me by the throat and pushed me up against the wall. I was holding a plate of food and did not assault him. A bartender said "oh he works here" and when the police arrived you guys would not disclose his identity. That makes you an even bigger piece of shit than him. I'm pursuing charges and this is not over. When I was outside waiting for the cops I had several witnesses apologizing for what they seen happen to me. You kicked out the guy who stood up for me. I have only ever been at The Max on Saturday nights, so I don't have much experience with any of the other events that take place here, but I have also never been disappointed when going. The Max is by far the best club in Omaha, and to be honest probably in all of Nebraska. There are two separate dancefloors (one plays hiphop, while the other is more edm/top40), a patio and designated smoking area out back, a room for pool, and five separate bars altogether. However, when I go to The Max I go there to dance and have fun and they sure as hell serve what I am asking for. But, if you are there to drink it does take a while to get a shot or something because they are understaffed like everyone else has said, and the drinks are also a bit pricey like others have mentioned. Again though, I'm there to dance my head off, so drinks have never been a problem for me. I have also read that the employees are rude, but in my own opinion, I thought the bartenders and doormen are always nice and do a good job at keeping the place lively. read more

I went to the ATM right by the center bar and came back and she ignored me and then told me to go to a different bartender. I have never been treated this way at any business.
