"Looks like a good place to grab a burger," he said as pangs of hunger began their familiar creep into his growling stomach. "We always pass by it in downtown Greer; we should try it out." His wife ambivalently agreed, obviously exasperated that their toddler now refused to sit politely for the beautiful Saturday stroller ride that had been so peaceful up until now. "Yeah, let's go ahead and get this cranky kid some lunch," she muttered with a sigh. He held the door for the family to squeeze through the old storefront into The Mason Jar. "Obviously a bar," he thought. "I could dominate some good bar food right now." Instructions to 'seat yourself' were inscribed on the vacant hostess station, so he wasted no time leading his family to a table. The restaurant was dimly lit, even at high noon, so he made his way toward the glass-paneled storefront area in search of a bright window seat. Situating themselves around a table, he and his wife began to cast longing glances toward the kitchen in hopes of locking eyes with a member of the wait staff and securing quick service. It took a few minutes, but eventually they spotted a waitress, and after a few more minutes, she dropped by with a smile and some menus. They didn't question the delay, despite there only being 5 other customers in the building - they were more than happy to have their drink orders taken and to begin scouring the attractive menu for their fare of choice. Fortunately, there was a great little LEGO kids' table by the front window that held their toddler's attention long enough for them to collaborate over menu choices. "You get the mushroom swiss burger with onion rings, I'll get a patty melt with fries, and we can share them," she pronounced pleasantly. "Isn't it so nice that this table is here for kids? I just wish that weird little oscillating fan and mini vacuum cleaner weren't sitting in the corner up there." She winced at the dingy, appliance-strewn corner and immediately began scheming on potential distraction tactics to employ for when (not if) the novelty of the LEGO table would wear off... The waitress returned promptly with mason jar glasses of water and recorded the lunch order. Then, salivating in expectation while placating the youngster, they waited. And waited. After a good 15 minutes, their waitress returned to gracefully apologize for the brief delay, and brought along a pacification snack. It was a single freshly baked...canned biscuit? Most likely a Laura Lynn brand butter-flavored refrigerated biscuit from one of those cardboard tubes that scares people when its vacuum seal pops open. And just one. "Thank you?" The couple exchanged suspicious eyebrow raises and commented on the peculiarity of the gifted biscuit. After breaking it open and giving it a cursory once-over, the wife finally let the pining toddler gobble it down. "At least its free," she remarked, unable to remove the look of weirded-outness from her countenance. At about the 20 minute mark, a new waitress scurried out of the kitchen with burger plates in hand. Rejoicing and eager to forget the oddities and delays to this point, the couple's eyes sparkled as the big, juicy burgers arrived looking larger than anticipated and quite appetizing in their presentation. They scooped them up and sunk in their teeth, discovering a delightful abundance of... Grease. That juicy look was actually puddled grease sitting on the patty. And not grease in the 'bacon makes everything taste better' sense of the word. These were grease-saturated burgers, inside and out. The husband began wondering whether the chef was using some 50/50 fat-lean beef, deep frying the patties in oil, or perhaps both. "Does yours taste funny?" She slowed her chewing to a crawl and shot a suspicious look at her patty melt. "I think it's just really greasy," he replied. "It's ok flavor, but nothing special - it's just a grease burger." Although the onion rings were well prepared and quite enjoyable, the couple exchanged their all-too-familiar weirdness glances over the fries as well. Oversalted, cold, and stale - the trifecta of bleh in the french fry universe. Disappointment shrouded over the pair as hungrily, quickly, reluctantly, they slogged through their meal knowing their time was short until the toddler would have a full-fledged nap-deprived meltdown. It had to be done. It had to be eaten. But they weren't one bit happy about it. Deflated and exasperated, the husband resolved to relate his experience on Yelp in hope that well-informed foodseekers would beware the superficial street-level magnetism of The Mason Jar. Worst restaurant ever. Food wasn't terrible. Fries were incredibly salty and I almost always salt my fries. A woman got sick (they served her too much drink) and she vomited right behind my husband about 2 minutes after we received our food. Then we could hear her vomiting more on the side of the building after she left a trail. We asked for the check and had to wait forever for the waitress to bring it and return with it while we stayed and smelled the lovely aroma. Good customer service would have been to have let us leave immediately. We barely ate 2 bites before this happened. It was disgusting! We will never eat there again. read more

Servers are inexperienced. I'm a drummer that has played there before. The noise level is not too loud unless its thursday, friday or saturday night. This a small place with live bands. It gets very loud!!. Good southern cooking though read more

First time going here and won't be my last! The joint had a very laid back vibe to it with friendly staff. But the best part about it... their amazing hand made seasoned hamburger!!! One of the best cheeseburger I ever had! Served with half french fries and onion rings ... cheeseburger was huge and I was disappointed that I couldn't eat all my food with how good it was. Went for lunch with my husband. I ordered the pick 2 combo sandwich and salad and chose the BLT. My husband got the Minter Cheese Burger. I was pretty disappointed with the quality of the food. My BLT's bread was burned on the edges and almost all of my husband's fries were WAY overdone. I can honestly say I've never had overcooked fries before. My husband's burger was good. The service was average, but considering there were only 4 tables that were filled at the time, it could have been better. There's nothing about this place that makes me really want to go back for the food. it may be better for an entertainment/evening venue than lunch. read more

Last year we were here and it was a fun stop on the way to see friends off at the airport. This year the place went down, the prices up and the drinks were stingy. Walk across the street to the other place that all the locals know is much better, cheaper and better menu. read more

Day after Christmas, and despite short staffing the food and service was great. They kept our little kids from imploding with quick delivery of the chicken nuggets and mac/cheese. The chicken pot pie and meatloaf were great. Nice, relaxed environment too. Would recommend; we will be back for sure. read more

This is a "Don't Miss It" local diner. Nothing fancy except for the food and the service. Get the Redneck Burger with pimento cheese and fried green tomatoes. WOW!!! And the fries were fresh and crispy. And don't miss the Fried Bologna sandwich. Another WOW!!! Great value. Great prices and real down home. My coworker and I had lunch at the Mason Jar on a Friday. We heard that they had some of the best burgers in Greer and they are living up to the rumor. I had the Moonshiner burger and my coworker had the Patty Melt. My coworker was in love with the fries. They are handcut and lightly seasoned. Our burgers were huge and juicy. We will return and hopefully they can improve on the air quality (it smelled like someone was smoking). If it were not for the smell of cigarettes, I would give this place 4 stars read more

I am very disappointed that I have to write this bad review, but I feel other people need to know of the sanitary conditions of the Mason Jar. We work at a local agency in the city of Greer and have ordered from the Mason Jar regularly over the years. Just recently has the quality of staff and food gone down drastically to the point that today August 15th, 2018 hair was found in the chicken salad twice. First incident hair was on the bottom of the sandwich, called and they gave me another sandwich, (they offered me my money back but I know mistakes can happen) so I got another chicken salad sandwich started eating it and about half way thru there was another piece of hair this time inside the sandwich. They need to be more sanitary than this. read more

We have had a few good times here. Service is southern so be prepared to take your time, as it should be when you are out relaxing. The drinks are pretty amazing for a small town bar, lots to choose from. The food is good and they have great music and events nightly. We dropped in here for the first time on an early Thursday evening. It was pretty quiet and we were promptly seated and had drinks within a minute or two. I ordered the patty melt with fries, she ordered the pot roast daily special with mashed potatoes, and we split a side order of macaroni and cheese. The patty melt was fantastic, among the best I've ever had. The fries were delicious. The pot roast was very good as well, and although the potatoes needed something (butter, maybe - this may be taste dependent), they were still quite good. However, the star of the show was the macaroni and cheese, which was EXACTLY how I like it - a little dry and recognizably full of cheddar cheese. Too many southern places use egg or soft cheeses and it ends up being bland - not so here. And then, when we were finished, we had the banana pudding, which was perfect. The Mason Jar does trivia and karoke nights along with live music, and I imagine it would get crowded and loud during that stuff, of course, so this isn't a place for quiet dinner. But with great service, some of the best food I've had since moving to SC (and that's saying something!) and good prices, I think we've found our new favorite restaurant in our new home town. read more

My husband and I went here for dinner based on walking by on a previous visit to downtown Greer. The look of the place and the name made us think this was a good place to grab some food and drinks and hang out to watch a band on a Friday night without having to drive to downtown Greenville. When we arrived, there were only a few tables full and we were seated quickly. The server was nice but it took a long time to order, get drinks, and get the food because he seemed to be the only one actually working. The bartender was not helping him at all. The food was not very good. We ordered the pimento cheeseburger and the mushroom Swiss burger. The pimento cheese was terrible and had almost no flavor except for the large shredded cheddar cheese that was not even warm. The mushroom Swiss burger must have been sitting there ready for quite a while because it was lukewarm. The fries were a great concept because they were fresh cut potato fries but they were so greasy that the fries were soggy. Can't really comment on the band because they were set up when we arrived and they never played anything by 9. This place has great potential in a good location but they really missed the mark. If the server had not been so nice and obviously swamped with trying to take care of all the tables himself, we would have complained. We will not be returning. read more

Would not recommend this place. Watched a customer change there baby's diaper on a table and not 2 mins later a customer came in and sit at the same table. I then told the waitress what had happened and all she did was wipe the table down with a rag. Ordered the banana pudding and tasted like the 0.99 cent box you get from Walmart. read more

We really tried to like this place and gave it 3 chances thinking maybe we had bad luck. Every time the food was bland, generic and seemed frozen. The fried fish was the tiniest piece of fish I have ever seen and tasted very fishy and greasy - we could not even finish it. Burgers were bland with no flavor and kind of dry. Expensive pricing for the low quality. I would go back for a beer and entertainment on a weekend night, but never again for food. read more

This was absolutely delicious! I had the chicken pot pie and a side salad; they were both wonderful. My mom had the steak quesadillas and said the steak was awesome and tender. The service was a little slow, especially since it wasn't very crowded at all. The atmosphere was quiet and nice for a relaxing evening. They do have trivia nights and live bands some nights so I'm sure that could be a little loud. But we will definitely be back because the food and prices were great! read more

We had stopped in here by complete accident several months ago while on a camping trip. Food and service was outstanding. It was a Saturday evening there was a live band. AWESOME!! Stopped in today Saturday before noon they open at 1130 am stopped in around 1145. After we sit and server brought us our tea she completely ignored us whIle talking to the lady seated next to us about friends who hurt your feelings. And they way it should be handled. Several other patrons walked in got served by another server. As we kept looking at our server to let her know we were ready the other server asked her if she would like her to get our order. No they aren't ready. Wendy was our server. She want pleasant in any way did not refill our drinks or check on us at all. Another server came in at 1230 yes 45 minutes after we walked in we got our food. Burger was great fries were cold and greasy. Other servers seemed pleasant and quick. I recently stopped in at The Mason Jar to grab a late lunch, and it has honestly been a very long time since I was this disappointed with a restaurant. The server was very nice, but it was just me and another gentleman sitting at the bar (where I thought I would get faster service...) and a table of five men and the service was really slow. I enjoy going here on .50 cent wing Thursday- I always get the barbecue ranch. The crabby rangoons and the chicken basket are also good. Was is Greer visiting friends and wanted to have a few beers at a local spot. Laid back bar which I really like! I also liked the band and the staff was pleasant enough. Bud Light was $4.50 each and Fireball shots at $11 each??!! Really! I thought the Fried Cabbage appetizer sounded good --turns out it's Egg Rolls? Went for a casual Sunday lunch the server immediately came up to us as we were sitting down and said she was the only server working. She had a party of 7 or so a few 2 tops and the four of us , there was a bartender with around 4 people at the bar and what appeared to be a manager or maybe owner who appeared to be walking around looking confused and also tending to her daughters (the bartender..they favored ) crying baby and young child. We ordered our sweet tea which came out warm and about 30 minutes later she finally found her way back over to take our order. Upon getting the food app was chicken nachos maybe half a chicken breast if we were lucky a teeny amount of canned nacho cheese and after asking twice for sour cream and salsa we noticed the to go cups of salsa had spoiled it was all bubbly and nasty. Chicken tenders were tiny and fries were cold had to tell server twice that we needed honey mustard even tho when I placed my order I had requested it. The burger tasted frozen and also as if it had some breading in it even though the menu says 100% ground chuck the chicken sandwich that we ordered did not come with bread and at that point and with so many other issues we just decided to keep our mouths shut!! read more

This was the worst meal we have ever had anywhere. We had out of town company and someone recommended. I was so embarrassed we had brought our out of town guests here. We ordered the fried cabbage rolls for an appetizer menu described as having cabbage and ground meat inside...no meat and they were so greasy...about a 1/4 inch of grease in bottom of basket. The entrees were no better...two of us ordered pot pie....cream of chicken soup with a pea and carrot thrown in....and waitress recommended...my husband had meatloaf sandwich special on wheat bread...could not Tell if bread was wheat or white...my sister had mason ar chicken it was burned on bottom conveniently hidden with melted cheese on top...only good thing is waitress was very nice and was the ONLY person waiting tables, bar tending, bussing etc so we did not have the heart to tell her the food was horrible....what if she was the one who was cooking too. The atmosphere here is okay, prices are okay. Food is average at best. I wanted to give them 1 star, but upped it to 2 stars simply because the fries are fresh, not frozen. The Menter Cheese Burger was okay. The burger was large enough, but the pimiento cheese tasted either commercial or old. I ordered 1/2 & 1/2 fries & rings as the side, but later was told they were out of onion rings. Guess maybe that's the same reason I didn't get onion straws on my burger even though I specifically requested them? We got to dessert and here is where I thought a place that calls itself Southern could redeem itself: Nanner's Banana Pudding. It was terrible! From what I could tell, they got my order and proceeded to dump a few pieces of a green banana in the bottom of a bowl, then mixed together some canned institutional grade vanilla or banana-flavored pudding with a few vanilla wafers, poured that on top of the pieces of green banana, poured some more of the commercial pudding on the top, then sprayed on some canned whipped topping. What a travesty! No Southern "nanner" worth her salt would ever make a banana pudding "fresh" and serve it without allowing the vanilla wafers to soften, and she would know better than to use green bananas or commercial pudding out of a can. Until the dessert arrived, I thought I might give this place another chance, but I'm afraid that will be the last time I enter those doors. Oh, and we were there when the band was setting up on a Friday night, and were lucky enough to have them purposely prop the front doors standing wide open while they walked in and out - covering any patrons anywhere near the door with a big dose of cold air.
