The Mark and Surrey Hotels are fabulous boutique hotels on the Upper East Side in New York. We spent an afternoon at these gems on our recent trip for my bday weekend. It's easy to hit both in an afternoon because they're around the corner from each other. They're both elevated in every way but have a real residential feel to them. Nothing better than a spot where you see locals hanging out. Our beautiful wives had the idea to find a nice place to grab an afternoon snack and cocktail and decided on trying out the Mark Bar first They were able to score bar seats so we had the perfect spot for afternoon fun. The coolest thing about the Mark Bar was something we've never seen in a bar. Many had their dogs with them in the bar. It was a nice treat for us since we love pups. Every designer breed you can imagine was enjoying the beautiful space with their people. Another nice touch was the gourmet hot chocolate and chili dog cart they had stationed on the sidewalk outside next to the hotel entrance. We regrettably passed on the chili dog, but had their prize winning hot cocoa. So good!!! The Mark Bar is chic and warm. It oozes stylish and loungy. We struck up a number of friendly discussions with folks around us when one of our crew thought they lost their phone at the bar. Everyone dropped what they were doing to help us look for it. Good thing she found it in her back pocket. Of course the people watching on the Upper East Side is spectacular and it didn't disappoint. Everyone was as friendly as they were dressed to the nines. I enjoyed my experience here at the mark hotel. I visited the bar/restaurant on the lobby floor. I was celebrating my dog's 5th birthday lol and the staff was extremely accommodating. I sat on the couch in the corner I had one cocktail. the Burrata, tuna tartar, and noodle had a K-9 cuisine bowl from the doggy menu. She cleaned her plate and I enjoyed my apps. Everyone from the door to the restaurant was very pleasant and I would absolutely visit again. read more

Great place to hang out after my haircut upstairs. Saw John Catsimitides with his wife Margo.

I came here for drinks on a Saturday around 11pm. The lounge area was relatively small. They had maybe a dozen or so tables, with couches and ottomans for various group sizes. The ceiling and walls were covered with glittery globes that resembled elegant disco balls. All the tables were full when we initially arrived, but we were eventually able to grab seats without a reservation. They have a small signature cocktail menu. I got the ginger margarita. It was sweet with a cinnamon sugar rim. Not the most memorable drink, but decent to sip on. The restroom was in the adjacent hotel up a flight of stairs. This a nice, upscale option for a night cap or a drink after a date. read more

I have not been inside The Mark bar ever until today to pay for my hot chocolate. It's very pretty inside! They Have a cart outside that sells Hot dogs, chicken and Hot chocolate with a Chocolate Marshmallow YUM! The Hot chocolate itself was rich and very good! Just the way I like it. The marshmallow melted too quick before I could try it but, I am pretty sure it added more of a chocolate taste to it. 100% recommend trying The Mark Hot Cocoa!!! We had a fantastic Brunch at the Mark Bar! The food & drink are always incredible but the bartender, Vlad, is amazing! We enjoyed pastries, the eggs Benedict, Croque Madame, hot dog, ginger margarita, and the salted caramel sundae. Vlad really took care of us with his great service, wonderful fun personality and attention to detail. He is a real star over there and gave us a little goody bag before we left. We live in NYC and had not been to the bar for a while and phew, have they raised the prices. $47 burger with truffles and brie, parm crusted chicken swimming in a butter sauce with chunks of artichokes $57. All good just costly. But sitting at the bar was very noisy...someone was refilling liquor bottles and the banging clanking went on for a while, then refilling stack of metal trays - IDK thought staff could have been more considerate...Would I go back? Probably if we wanted to go out to dinner and could not get a res anywhere else in the area...not so many good choices on UES or UWS above bistro quality. read more

This is my second visit to the mark. Every time I end up comming here, I always find myself being the akward person that is just looking around in all directions. There is just so much to take in. It's got such a beautiful elegant design. I can't help but to sit and just admire it all. There is deffinatly a good mix of people in the bar. If you've just been out for dinner or are out on a date or hanging out with glfriends, its a great place to end the night. The ambience is mellow. Not wild and crazy like most places in nyc. You can actually hear people talk here. It's lounge style so I would deffinatly recommend getting a little dressier for the occasion. The servers are extremley friendly and approchable as well as the bartenders. I can deffinatlyee myself comming back many times and bringing all of my friends here. The staff and service are excellent. However, management's Dog friendly policy resembles a Roman orgy. While I own and love dogs, there still remains many factors that separate us from these friendly animals. Perhaps someday parity between the species will equal the sense of entitlement the The Mark management bestows on Dogs. Till then, enjoy the hotel that's become a Kennel Club. read more

For the prices they charge for drinks, you would expect a more from a venue. The drinks were not that great, the bar needs a refresh and service can be mediocre depending on who is behind the bar. There are better places to spend your money, so the Mark Bar should really pick it up. read more

Was looking forward to trying the hot chocolate at The Mark and went out of my way to go there. On insta, someone posted that it's open daily at 9 am. I got there at 10 and the guy was just setting up, and indicated that it wouldn't be ready for another 30 minutes. This place was a bit full of themselves with not very friendly staff. I came here during the weekday at 3pm which was fairly quiet. When we sat done at the bar area, the hostess immediately came by to tell us we must share the tiny sofa as it's designed as 2 tables (even though it was not busy at all). When I'm in the UES I might as well be in a city I barely know. After a trip to the Met, we were trying to find a place to warm up with cocktail, so I did what I always do when in a somewhat foreign place: consult my Yelp app. I saw hotel bar and that was that. Not the greatest decision. Keeping it short and sweet, this is what I experienced at the Mark Hotel Bar: Strange, desperately "hip" patrons (not all. Some were of the fur coat and older banker variety). Pretentious staff that seem to think they're doing you a favor by serving you (yet the guys at the front door are SO nice!) Insanely overpriced mediocre cocktails that are not crafted, merely mixed. The kind of place that gives swanky NYC hotel bars a bad name. Too bad I kinda love the decor. But my days of going to places just for the ambiance are over. If I want to spend 19 bucks on a cocktail, I'll hit up my favorites: The Algonquin, King Cole Room or The Pierre. Truth is, I'm now spoiled by hotel bars in New Orleans where you're treated well and can sip on an expertly crafted classic for 12 bucks or less, while lounging in a sumptuous environment. read more

If you are into cougars and Eurotrash this is the place. Don't get me wrong I actually liked this hideaway but my Midwestern sensibilities were in code orange. And of course because I'm kinda' a snarky a-hole and drinking is involved don't expect me to play well with others. I had a friend in from out of town and the crew wanted to go somewhere 'nice'. I'm not sure if a jacket is required at this place but it seems the wait staff is sporting Turnbull & Asser so at least make an effort. The bar is located just inside the lobby of the Mark Hotel. A very nice artsy spot, a tad small but interesting. Our waitress was a young model type. I don't remember her name but she was quick and pleasant. I had a few normal Mojitos. She offered berry and kumkwat Mojitos too (really). These types of drinks are for housewives from Des Moines or Topeka, not jaded permanently uncomfortable alcoholics like myself. So the regular Mojito it was and it was fine. The real treat here is watching the crowd. I have a simple mantra, "you can do or be anything you want but I have the right to make fun of you.." In school they called it 'insubordination'. I called it dealing with the ebb and flow of arbitrary dictoms common in public education. Mom called it "the problem". Anyway.. As I was sitting on my little chair, patterned in a faux Holstein motif, sipping my Mojito I was surprised by the amount of euro-trash that had washed up. The guys are super tanned wearing stomach hugging shirts, top few buttons undone, tight white jeans fresh off the jet from Ibiza or Majorca. The women were a tad older (40+) dressed in natural linens and colorful accessories suggesting past nights in Tunisia or Marrakesh. Sprinkle in a few trophy wives and their older balder mates and a few Tom Wolfe look a-likes and you get the general idea. To be fair there were a few cute girls dressed for the 'night out'. Very nice. So, If you are looking for a quaint stylish spot to have a few well made drinks, this might be a good place to start. The Bar area is kinda' small so if it is too crowded, Bemelmans Bar is only a few feet away. read more

Coming to the Mark Hotel is a "splurge" ... thankfully we are able to do so a couple of times a year. The staff at the hotel, as well as the hotel bar is always outstanding. I do want to give a special shout out to Jimmy though, who even brought an extra smile to our table tonight. read more

Drinks were great, service is good, but the cow print seats are really grungy. This seems like a really nice hotel and the food is great, but for heaven's sake... get some new upholstery! Hello, I have stayed at the Hotel and absolutely loved it however the bar & restaurant were just a mere vision and glad they came through. Last night I met a dear friend that I met when I moved to NYC 36 months ago and this was my last hoorah and thankful we met at The Mark. I arrived 1st and had asked the waitress what she recommended she said the Cucumber Martini I immediately said yes, please bring me one, It was AMAZING! so amazing that my friend ordered one and I went with the Ginger Margaretta was good however I preferred the Martini. Even the little bar snacks were yummy I'd only wished I'd gone earlier as I'd been there many more times. The place is not at all the pretentious UES crowd that you'd thought it would be. They did a great job decorating the bar the lighting is perfect just enough to see everyone perfectly. Like I had said before wish I hadn't waited so long to pop in. read more

All right. Full disclosure, my friend and I were taking advantage of NYC on a summer weekend (i.e. quiet), and so the Mark Hotel Bar was as empty as most of the city. She wanted to people watch, and promised a great experience. She's not often wrong, but not always right ... On arriving, the waitress and bartender treated the bar as if it were *completely* empty. Service was abysmal, and I had to flag down the waitress. In a room half the size of a Starbucks. With no one else there. I had a taste for a Pisco sour - no Pisco?! I ordered a Manhattan, and it was passable. My friend ordered ... something in a martini glass. It had an ice cube in it. In a standard-sized martini glass. Displacing whatever alcohol that was (barely) in the drink. I may be confused here, but isn't there a distinct difference between "up" and "on the rocks"? And this, for $20. The drink brought me back to years ago, eating at the Essex House on Central Park South, I was charged $25 for a Johnny Walker Black Rusty Nail. The price perplexed me, until I realized - places like Essex and MHB charge what they do *because they can*. We settled up & booked out of there, for Bar Pleiades about a block away. A night-and-day difference (with a hella tasty Pisco Sour, at that). I hardly ever give one-star reviews, but my experience at the Mark Hotel Bar was so bad, I'm still mad about it, and it was more than a month ago. read more

Last night I tried the Mark bar. I often eat at the restaurant but this was my first time at the bar. The decor is great and during the week the bar is not overcrowded. I ordered the Ginger Margarita. My date was not impressed by their cocktail list and asked for a Mai Tai. The bartender said they did not make them. What kind of bartender cannot make a Mai Tai? At one point I was sitting alone because my date was paying at the bar. I felt uncomfortable. Old men were staring at me. My margarita had a messy ring of salt and no discernible ginger flavor. I was disappointed because I love ginger.I contemplated mentioning it to the bartender (in the hopes he would add some ginger in it) but his sour face and unpleasantness when we asked for a Mai Tai dissuaded me. We sat on a nice cow fur stool next to a group of businessmen. The one sitting closest to me smelled bad, perhaps the result of wearing a suit all day and sweating in it. To our right was an old man and his young date in stilettos. A group of young investment bankers, all male, stood by the bar alongside some retirees. Everyone here seemed a little too desperate for Iove, youth, and happiness, but it's all smoke and mirrors in this bar, and without a good cocktail to drain ones sorrows into, it will break your heart. read more

One of my favorite places in the world. Delicious, accessible food. Five star service. Not a horribly tough table to get, and the maitre d is warm and welcoming. The Mark Hotel is a cute small bar in the UES. I've never been out in the UES, but my friend suggested coming here after ice skating at the Wollman Rink. The best part of this bar is the decor. I loved the ceiling which had little sconces scattered all over - very flattering lighting. The drinks were solid. Service was very slow though. After the first 30 minutes, we had to hail the waitress like we were trying to get a cab every time we wanted something. Given how small the bar is, it's surprising how hard it was to get their attention. I wouldn't be opposed to coming back if asked, but I'll never seek it out. read more

The best cougar's den in NYC: what the monkey bar was through the late 90's (my college days). Perfectly mixed classic and newer cocktails devoid of false pretension/giant ice cubes/the reliance on oiled essences that poorer skilled barmen spray on top of cocktails that seems to now pervade our small island. Comfey couches, super tacky carpeting, old men flaunting their wealth and some women half their age-perhaps professionals-drawn to them/it. Could you ask for a better people watching spot? Oh yeah and light snacks as a courtesy. Though expensive and they have a relatively high turnover of waitresses it is worth every penny!!!!! read more

Beautiful fun decor, fantastic martinis and excellent service. A great lounge for a date or to bring friends or out of town guests. Cow upholstered stools, a trendy reddish lit bar and pretty lights adorning the walls. The servers were attentive, sophisticated, and friendly with great personalities. We were able to have conversation so comfortably (no noise or crowds as a couple reviews stated)- so comfortably that time flew and before we realized it was closing time ... The amazing staff unlike a couple reviews was not pretentious or rude - the servers had such great personalities they even posed for a couple photos for me to post when I asked. read more

I love the Mark hotel bar, it always has a great crowd and excellent for people watching. They serve some of the finest drinks in town, yes they are a little pricey, but they are worth it. Absolutely love the Mark Hotel Bar. It looks futuristic, but like if someone from the 70's was telling what the future looked like. The staff is all really great and very, very well trained. It is nice to see that someone in New York still knows which end of that long spoon goes in the drink! Those groves are there for a reason. James Bond orders his martini shaken not stirred. Shaking it gets you ice chips which turn to water which makes your martini watered down. James Bond...you are on notice.... The crowd is well heeled, but fun. People tend to enjoy themselves in Hotel Bars. The place is filled with people who are either staying at a hotel or who enjoy going to hotel bars, either way...makes for a crowd that is usually genuinely enjoying themselves and a fun atmosphere. read more

I went here with a few couples and we were lucky enough to get a place to sit near the door. Every now and then a cool breeze would rush in - it did get a bit warm otherwise. The drinks list is quite good with a selection of wines good enough for people without a budget. I didn't see enough beers on the menu but the ones on offer were good enough to please. The service was decent, no complaints here. The crowd is worth seeing, the UES money bags. It sure is a place to go when you're feeling spendy. I will return to the restaurant sometime soon and write on that. read more
