We stopped by for a post-dinner libation, so we didn't get to try the food and sat at the bar. What a cool bar vibe. I loved the neon sign, the bar lighting and how cool and friendly the bartenders were. I ordered a dirty martini, but was immediately jealous of my husband's frozen pina colada. I usually don't order frozen, blended drinks but this was more like a real cocktail... it was super smooth and not icy, very rum-forward, flavorful and refreshing and not too cloyingly sweet. Kind of annoying the way they take names for reservations and that they won't call your phone when it's your turn, and they seem kind of overwhelmed at the front with how busy they are but they're always like that so you would think they'd be more prepared. read more

Dangerously close to where I live, the Long Island Bar has become a beloved entry into my list of local joints to grab a good bite and sip. For those who appreciate old-school New York, you'll love the vintage diner interior as well as the amazing neon signage out front. It truly is a blast from the past. On to the food! Having tried a few things on the menu I can say without a doubt that my favorites are the deviled crab toast, the smoked trout spread (it comes with Triscuits!), and of course the L.I. BURGER. So good and hits that burger spot especially with the fries. For drinks I stick with the White Negroni Sbagliato or the cognac French 75. I love a good classic cocktail. Fun trivia: Over the summer (2025), they filmed a scene here in the new Devil Wears Prada 2 movie. I'm hoping when it comes out next year, the scene is kept in the movie, but I also don't want this place to be swarmed by dumb tourists looking to reenact Andy's dance moves outside. read more

I've been trying to try out the "Long Island Bar" for a while now. It's always insanely packed and rightfully so. What's not too love about an Americana style modern diner! My boyfriend and I were celebrating our 3 year anniversary and wanted to go somewhere special. I had the day and wanted to be literally the first person in and we were. It filled up while we enjoyed the course. I started with a pricey gin martini and lemme tell ya...it was worth it! Damn! Probably one of the best martinis I've partaken in. Ingredients: "Hepple Gin, Dassai 50 Junmai Daiginjo Sake, Lustau Blanco Vermut, house bergamot/pomelo tincture." Delectable! My boyfriend ordered a beer, Kolsch. We started with deviled eggs. So classic and fantastic. I was drawn to the smoked trout dip! Love fishy dips! As a girl, I'm into the salty snacks and little bites. So I ordered that and roasted beets that had some hazelnuts and delicious brandied cherries. I was in heaven with both dishes. My boyfriend ordered the burger and fries. The burger came with an American flag toothpick jammed into the top of the bun. So American! I managed to snag some of the fries. I really could not be happier with all the decisions we made. The Long Island Bar is located in Brooklyn Heights, not that fish shaped chunk of land as the name would suggest. I have seen this place many times but each time I was having brunch across the street at Colonie. Its Art Deco inspired exterior and neon signage and classic looking interior were all aesthetics that spoke to me and I have wished they were open for brunch many times. Recently, circumstances brought me to Brooklyn Heights one night (around 8pm) and my partner and I were hungry! We were going to go to Colonie at first but when I saw the neon signage all lit up and the exterior bustling with activity, I knew this was my chance to finally check out The Long Island Bar. The Long Island Bar was opened in 1951 by Ramon Montero. His daughter and her husband would take it over and run the establishment for 50 years! In 2013 Joel Tompkins and Toby Cecchini restored and reopened the restaurant and continue to run it to this day. The interior of the restaurant is beautiful. Wood booths line the restaurant on the left while the right side has a long bar. The wood is beautiful and each booth has a small light installed off to the side. At our booth there was a bowling ball next to the window, a whimsical decoration. Adding some nice color to the restaurant were Christmas lights strung along the walls and the bar. The bar is also gorgeous featuring wonderful shelves behind the bartenders. I was instantly comfortable and awed at the same time. The hostess was very nice and seated us immediately. Our waitress appeared within seconds. The menu is not huge so it's not hard to figure out what you want. We ordered and in no time at all food was coming at us. Here's what we had: FROZEN EGG NOG This is a seasonal drink with spices, cognac, bourbon and rum. It has the consistency of a slushie and it is, without a doubt of the best cocktails I have ever had. The consistency was perfect, it was refreshing, creamy and spicy with the perfect liquor flavor. I split this with my partner but I'll tell you, if I wasn't driving I would have wanted one all for myself! SMOKED TROUT SPREAD (with cream cheese, trout roe, and triscuits) This is a fun dish. The Triscuits help balance out the decadence of the trout roe and the cream cheese is a nice vehicle to spread onto the Triscuits. This was nice and tasty without being over-salty. We wound up asking for a few more Triscuits so we could finish off the roe and cream cheese! PANISSE (crispy chickpea fritters with almond pesto rosso, pine nut, garrotxa goat cheese, and lemon) This was a really interesting dish. The crispy chickpea fritters are rectangular in shape and the rest of the ingredients are layered on top. I highly recommend you make sure to get a bit of every ingredient in your bite, using a piece of the fritter as a foundation. It's a wonderful savory and sweet combination that also has fun textures. The chew of the fritters contrast nicely with the pine nut crunch with the goat cheese kind of being an in between texture to smooth everything out. A really nice appetizer! THE L. I. BURGER (Two dry-aged beef patties, pickles, cheese, fancy sauce, & fries) The L.I. Burger was definitely the centerpiece of our meal. It's not the biggest burger ever but that's okay because it was delicious! The patties were perfectly cooked and juicy. The cheese and "fancy sauce" (think a better version of McDonalds' "secret sauce") were fantastic too. The fries were excellent, with a crisp outside and nice and chewy center. Thanks to the double patties, I had to use a fork to keep my half of the burger together, so be warned! I *loved* my experience at The Long Island Bar. We had the burger here, and it was alright. Not bad per se, but the meat was not as juicy and a tad dry. I think I prefer 7th st burger over this. Their fries were good though. We had a gimlet mocktail ($12 vs $18) and a scotch/soda. The gimlet was good and the latter was a little too bland for my taste but that's probably on me. We came in at 5:30 on a Saturday and we were able to get a table right away as it seems that the tables are reserved for patrons who are ordering food and there were a few empty tables even though the standing room/bar area was crowded and turning people away. read more

Everytime I walk by this bar, it is always poppin' with people filling up the bar inside and the outdoor tables. We decided to come check it out on a Thursday evening and were able to grab a table in the back. The space has an old school retro, diner vibe to give it a charm. They were quick to provide water for us and were consistent with the refills as well. For drinks, we had the Dolores Del Rio ($16) and Kings County Distillery LIB Single Cask ($18). The Dolores had a nice refreshing taste with a jalapeño kick, which I enjoyed. To pair with our drinks, we nibbled on the Cheese Curds ($14) as well. I have always been indifferent about cheese curds, but the ones here were probably the best I've had! They came out piping hot, so the cheese just melted in your mouth with the crunch from the batter. I also really enjoyed the sour cream dip to pair with this as well. Overall, I really enjoyed the items were did order, although the menu is quite limited. The rest of the menu didn't appeal to us too much, but the cheese curds and dolores martini was delicious. read more

We waited awhile to get a seat, but I really wanted to go cause I heard such great things. I ordered the burger and I was really happy with it. I'd go back for the vibes. One thing to note, they don't take numbers for the waiting list so you'll have to be around and constantly check in with them. Great option nearby for drinks. This place has been in the neighborhood for decades. I was confused by its name since it's in Brooklyn. So it was surprising to learn that Brooklyn is technically part of the Long Island mainland! The service was attentive. The interior gave off classic old historic diner vibes. We were the first people there at around 6pm so I was sad to learn that there was no happy hour! The cocktails were really well done priced at 16-18 dollars. I would def come back for a cocktail. I liked the Dolores Del Rio - perfect sour and perfect spice. The Improved Pedennis Club was great too. I liked that the cocktails weren't overly sweet. We shared some fries and cheese curds. We've passed by this restaurant so many times, but never thought to pop in until our friends suggested it for dinner. They prepared us for a great meal of burgers, cheesecurds, and strong martinis, and they were 100% correct We each ordered our own burgers + fries, cheesecurds for the table, and a gem salad to be healthy. My boyfriend had wanted to come to The Long Island Bar for brunch, however, they did not open until 2:00 p.m. on Sunday so we decided to go to another place to eat. We returned to The Long Island Bar later in the day for a drink and boy were we disappointed in the visit. The staff behind the bar was so rude and unfriendly. The guy said not two words to us and when we put in our drink orders it seemed as though we were putting him out for doing his job. I ordered a dirty martini which was not great and my boyfriend had a glass of Cabernet which was decent. The food did look good and I considered ordering some fries, but decided I would not spend a penny more due to the cold treatment. This establishment had been suggested to me after I returned from a jaunt to Wisconsin that led me to discover a newfound love for cheese curds. Not the squeaky kind, but the deep fried variety. Naturally, a large plate of those to share was called for, but ironically I ended up preferring our other shared plates more, including the tangy deviled eggs and mild Spanish tortilla. My first drink was the erin ($16) which was sweet and slightly bitter from the bigallet china amer. My second drink was the dolores del rio ($16) which is one of their more popular drinks. It was spicy from the jalapeño-infused tequila but not too spicy. It was tart from the passionfruit and the lime juice and balanced by the aperol. It was really good and I can see why it's a favorite among locals. For food I ordered the fried cheese curds ($13) which were really good. It's fried and cheesy; how can they not be good? If you want to be transported back in time, this is the watering hole for you. This was a cool place to stop for a couple drinks. read more

We were so excited to show our Wisconsin family this Wisconsin bar - we walked a half an hour in the summer heat! When our elderly father went to pull up a chair to a 4 person table outside, the hostess burst outside and announced to the block: "do not rearrange my furniture!" Ok, no problem. We were lucky to get a table fairly quickly (2ppl), as most of the others waiting were larger parties. We got a drink at the bar during the brief wait. They also transferred our bar tab to the table which is a nice service that most places won't do. (They will make you close out your bar tab before being seated). They also have a good amount of outdoor seating. The inside is cozy and warm, and you can tell people love this place. The whole martinis and burgers idea is very much my vibe and you really can't go wrong. They have traditional martinis along with a special martini on their cocktail menu. Their fried cheese curds are amazing - it's like tempura fried with French onion dipping sauce. The burgers come with thin patties cooked medium with super crispy fries. It's a perfect burger to enjoy with a martini. I've been hear twice and loved it both times. There were lots of folks dining out and it looked like a good time, so what the heck! The service was exceptional! Really accommodating and friendly. Things fell short with the food. For one, there's not really a huge food selection, and the items are slightly overpriced in my opinion. I ordered the burger and requested it to be cooked medium rare, I received a well done burger that didn't leave much to be desired.I ended up not eating the whole thing. However, the seasoned fries are very tasty! The puttanesca was also just okay. When we asked for more parmesan on the side, it seemed like a burden. Overall, if you're looking for a nice cocktail this is the place to be! If not, I'd recommend finding another option for food. read more

We've had The Long Island Bar on our radar for quite some time and finally made it happen. We sat outside, which was nice because it's a nice day. Very much looking forward to dining indoors at a later time. We started with some drinks - The Erin - tasty, like an old fashioned - and Delores Del Rio. VERY spicy! Then we had the cheese curds and salad, very tasty and probably our favorite parts of the meal! Then we had the panisse - which was surprisingly good and unexpected, and a double patty burger with bacon. Now, I would describe the burger as "weird." It tasted good, but very unlike most burgers. Felt a little like it was made of steak-umms pressed together. I don't think I would get it again. My wife suggested perhaps one patty was the way to go, so I guess I would be up for giving that a shot. Overall, very nice experience. Service was very friendly and quick. i just left this place where I was eating with my partner and our two children because the wait at our favorite, Henry Public, was too long. We sat next to a family who had sent a burger back for being undercooked. I guess the next burger came back undercooked as well so they tolt he waitress. Instead of just cooking it fully, they sent the manager out to tell the family that that was just how they cooked their burgers and basically if they didn't like it they could leave. The woman was visibly upset and crying, so she left the table. The manager later came back to tell the family never to come back. I felt really bad for them because actually our burgers were almost raw so we also did not eat them. I won't come back after seeing how the manager treated this lady. read more

Last night we went to attend a relative's birthday party. A table of 12 was reserved. Once the table was full and a few other guests started to arrive, the hostess confronted our cousin at the table and demanded to know how many more people were expected. As it was unclear, we asked if any of the other tables were reserved in the back room and if they were available or if we could split off and have some of the party sit at the bar. The hostess responded that if there were more than 12 people, we were required to rent the whole back room at an additional cost. She added that we weren't allowed to stand around in the back room and to stay out of the way of her wait staff. She came back 15 minutes later, making the same speech in front of the whole room. I understand the limitations of running a business in such a small place and the importance of organization and scheduling reservations to maintain some sense of order and flow for the kitchen and staff, but to repeatedly embarrass and humiliate your guests with such arrogance, hostility, and condescension is unforgiveable. If our cousin misunderstood the rules or even if she was blatantly ignoring them, the hostess should have pulled her aside in private for that conversation. The gem salad is no joke. I know everyone talks about the burger, which is also worth writing home about, but man, that salad. I don't know if it's because I was on a caesar salad kick or what, but I was honestly blown away. It's not a caesar salad nor does it have any of the same ingredients, but for some reason it tasted like caesar salad's cousin. It's made with gem lettuce, tossed with pea shoots, radishes, pepitas, and a generous helping of manchego cheese, all enveloped in a shallot vinaigrette. And croutons! The portion is large so you can easily eat this as your main. Or you can do what I do and order both the salad and the burger and split both with your meal companion. read more
