Great place for a casual lunch - the kids loved checking out the decor & watching the boats leaving the marina :)

I love that we were able to grab a few things we needed, walk to get some fro-yo, check out some movie times, and enjoy the harbor views. Lots of parking available, thank goodness. Store is clean, and well stocked. Perhaps TOO well stocked. My husband and I both found ourselves overwhelmed by the sheer amount of STUFF. We walked around the entire store before finally locating the bathroom department, eyes a-glaze from the sheer quantity of home goods. It's absurd how many choices for shower curtains one has at BBB. Maybe 30 something? We picked a "nicer" one, for around $40 retail, and a few other items for our bath. At checkout, the cost of our short shopping spree would have given my husband a coronary, had I not been sent a 20% off one item coupon, which was used toward that shower curtain. On top of that, a few of our wedding guests had thoughtfully given us gift cards, which took care of the total amount, with change to spare. When you want options, BBB is the place to go. You may pay a little more than bargain basements like Walmart, but you'll have your pick of the (shower curtain) litter.

BB&Beyond has been in financial trouble for some time now. Their stock has recently plunged again. They have closed many, many of their stores across the country and it seems to me that going out of business entirely is a strong possibility. Since my first review of this particular store, my shopping habits have changed. Many things I once purchased here I either buy elsewhere or don't use anymore. There are clearly millions of others like me otherwise this company wouldn't be in the trouble it is in. People are finding the myriad of products sold here elsewhere and often at lower prices. I did stop in the other day. My nail salon is in the same plaza so I was right there. I was in need of a couple of bed pillows for a spare bedroom and I thought I would see what they had to offer. I hadn't been in the store in awhile and was surprised to see that many areas had so few products. but it makes sense....no vendors want to front merchandise to BB&B given the financial straits they are in and the likely possibility that BB&B won't sell that merchandise and be unable to pay the vendors back. They only had one brand of bed pillows...it was either buy that brand (soft or medium fill) or no pillow. No pillow it was. While the shelves were relatively filled in the kitchen goods area, similarly, the choices were narrow. While I was in the store, I checked the Amazon website on my iPhone and in every case for items I randomly checked on, the prices were less expensive on Amazon. I feel conflicted about this. Of course like everyone else, I don't want to pay more money for something if I don't have to. On the other, I am fully aware that Amazon continues to creates situations where brick and mortar stores cannot compete. (I am less worried about big corporations like BB&Beyond than I am about the more local, mom and pop stores which generally speaking I like to support.) But this BB&Beyond seems to be in the throes of an imminent demise. Plenty of products here but much more limited choices. I saw two employees the day I visited. I am sure there must have been more somewhere; the store is huge. I just didn't see them anywhere. It felt a little like a ghost town....very few shoppers as well. I can't imagine what they will put in this huge store if BB&Beyond closes...the footprint is huge! My only hope is that if the store closes, they will raze this building...it is unattractive anyway and maybe make room for smaller, more personable stores.

When you walk in here you can immediately sense an undercurrent of despair. It's hard not to feel sad for the state of affairs related to US consumerism on many levels which helps create such a glut of second rate merchandise. With that said, I have a like-hate relationship with this place because there are those times I am pleased enough to buy a few things for not much money. Have I rescued the merchandise though or have I just added more junk into the community at large? It's hard to be sure. Some of the items I buy are paper goods. In general I loathe eating off of paper plates or plastic plates. But there are times I do need them and at least with the paper goods, Dollar Tree has a good selection in many colors. Starting in the fall the Christmas merchandise starts to appear. This is where I have started to buy Christmas gift bags and decorative boxes of which they always have a great assortment. Skip the wrapping paper because it is thin and cheap but the bags and boxes are a great way to festively package up gifts. We were going to be staying in a cottage a couple of summers ago and were uncertain whether there would be ample plates and glasses. So I came to this Dollar Tree and purchased 8 quite sturdy white ceramic plates, an assortment of drinking glasses including some ridiculously heavy but certainly quite usable wine stems. All this for just a few dollars and we were happy to leave everything behind at the cottage when we left. That felt like a score. They also sell glass platters and bowls here which I've purchased for the express purpose of using when I bring food or a baked good to a friend or neighbor. The recipient can keep the bowl or platter, I don't have to worry about getting something more precious back to me and I avoid the tacky look of wrapping something in foil. For a dollar an item it is hard to beat the practicality of this idea. Dollar Tree has other kitchen items like pots and pans, baking sheets, dishtowels, pot holders and the like. Again maybe okay if you're temporarily outfitting a vacation rental but other than that I think this stuff will never hold up and therefore not worth it even for a dollar. There are some toys and games mostly ones you've never heard of, coloring books and other children's items. There are crayons but not Crayola however in a pinch I am sure they would be fine. There is packaged food for sale including some questionable items in cans which I can't imagine being brave enough to try but I know people do purchase them and are perhaps relieved to have a food option at this price point...sad but an unfortunate reality of hunger in America. There are pet toys and dog and cat food...again, the provenance of these items is questionable and I would not purchase. There is a layer of dust on many things here, a faint musty odor in the air, hit or miss service at the registers which are never properly staffed and often very long lines at the checkout. But for that occasional item, Dollar Tree is A-OK if indeed you can get in and out before a sense of gloom and despondency overtakes you. Keep hand sanitizer in your car or purse as you will probably want to use it after handling so much dusty merchandise.
