My stylist Shelby not only provided me with stunning service, but also, great conversation and some tips on how to take care of my hair to rejuvenate my neglected curls. The products she used did wonders to my defeated hair and didn't cause any irritation to my super sensitive scalp. The staff overall were so lovely, kind, and you can tell they truly care about creating a welcoming environment for their new and existing clientele. I ramble a lot when I get nervous and Shelby was a great conversationalist! I also shared with her my past hair mishaps (which also contributed to a bit of my nerves) but once she started walking me through a bit of her process and sharing some potential styling ideas I knew I was in great hands! I wanted to give this place an awesome review because it came recommended to us. My daughter is 16 with very curly hair and we came specifically for that. She left with MUCH shorter layers than she said she asked for. She even showed a picture or her cut before. There was no time to really stop the stylist as she started on her bangs and just kept cutting. We trusted the process during the appointment but my daughter came home in tears and it is before the first day at a new high school. All we can do is put it in a pony tail. There is no way to fix it unless she cuts it even more. That is not an option. It was pretty terrible. Really kind stylist and clean salon. Just be careful when you come. I have a devastated daughter with hair that will take months to grown out. Hard lesson and we won't be back. read more

This place has very nice workers who make conversation while cutting your hair which is something i really liked. what i didn't like is that i got charged $130 for a straight cut and lopsided bangs that were so much shorter than the picture i showed. of course i didn't realize until after that they overcharged me because then i actually looked at my hair and saw that i didn't get the layers that i initially asked for and got bangs that were very short and also uneven. I guess it's my fault for not speaking up but in general i think $130 is a little too much for what i received. read more

Outstanding. I have paid 5 times what this salon charges. I have extremely fine, thinning - hair. Being 52? Menopause has taken a toll. My hair stylist of 12 years retired, and I have been to every salon- from Fairfax to Georgetown, left with short choppy over processed hair. Finally, Shelby, with The Kindest Cut salon, gave me an authentic incredible haircut and color. No frills, no none sense, just an exceptional master of her craft. Stay away!! They are outrageos and I seriously don't know how they get away with charging me $78.00. For just a trim! No blow dry no style nothing! I thought by telling the lady that I did not want a blow dry would save me money but no. I cannot find any place around here as high as them. * 1.5 stars due to lack of courtesy and quality of work performed * I went there last night to use my living social coupon that I purchased for a brazilian sugar deal. Saucy, yes? Having had this done as a wax, I was eager to give sugaring a try and for $32 I figured I couldn't go wrong. On initial impression upon walking in, not impressed. Decor was very cheap looking. I did show up early and sat there for half an hour while the aesthetician finished her appointment; no problem. I was not offered anything to eat/drink. When it came time for the sugaring, it was very perfunctory. I was told to wipe down with baby wipes and crack the door when I was ready. Having completed that task, I was admonished by the lady that I had not "trimmed". I told her I wasn't told that I needed to. She said 'They tell that to all the customers' and I said "I was given no such instruction." She said something to the effect of well, it's going to hurt you more then. Boy, did it ever! It was like taking duct tape and ripping it repeatedly over my sensitive lady parts. I actually almost yelled out "AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH Kelly Clarkson" at one point. I have a pretty high pain tolerance. This went well beyond that. For as invasive as she was, once it was over and she told me to clean up and get dressed (without a thank you for coming or anything like that), I looked down and noticed there was still a lot of hairs left. The whole time she had me there, she was trying to get me to purchase laser hair removal at $175 a pop telling me it was much better than shaving. I had to go home and finish up the work she didn't do (with a razor) Once I emerged, she was gone. No where to be seen. I will not be returning. My ladyparts and I have been offended. Expensive, too. I can do it at home for free. read more

I have been going to The Kindest Cut for about three years. I have had both positive experiences there and negatives. First I'll go into the positives! The positives are that every stylist I have never gotten there was friendly and personable. I have extremely thick, long, curly hair, and I never, ever got the feeling that they were annoyed at how much work it is to wash/cut my hair...they also never "rushed through the cut", like a lot of other salons tend to do. The stylists take their time gently shampooing your hair, and it always feels very pampering and nice. With me, they usually give me a deep conditioner, too, as my hair is dry. Their haircuts have generally been decent/good. I've never had any bad haircuts here, but I admit I have never really been "wowed" by my haircut either. I imagine for 95% of people's needs, they give great haircuts. My hair is generally a bit tricky because it is so thick and curly. :) Negatives: I've had one or two bad experiences with hair-coloring, here. My natural color is medium/dark brown, and for a while I was dyeing my hair a bit darker, closer to black. There were at least two times where I had to drive back to the salon either that night or the next day because, after my hair had completely dried, I had noticed that my roots were a different color than the rest of my head. They fixed the problem for free and were always apologetic, but it was still pretty inconvenient to have to drive 20+ minutes back to a salon when I had already spent 2.5 hours there. One time it was particularly stressful because I had wanted my hair to look great for a semi-formal event, yet I had to go back to the salon when I was already time-crunched. Additionally, I was disappointed that the prices seem to have gone up in the last year. For a full cut, styling and roots touch-up, it used to cost me about $90, WITH tip. The last time I was at the Kindest Cut, it cost me closer to $120 with tip. I simply can't justify spending that much on a styling and roots touch-up. This salon is great if you have long hair and want a nice haircut, and they are very friendly. They even generally ask if you want a drink when you get there, which is a rare treat. If I had not had the mistakes made on my hair with the coloring, I would probably rate this salon 4 stars. read more

I found Kindest Cut Spa Salon through Livingsocial. This review is based on my one-time and first time experience at the spa on Thursday May 17th. I called and schedule for the appointment a week before and spoke with someone in the front desk, the person was very chirpy and friendly. One thing that stood out and I appreciate the person asked was how long my hair was, so she can book the appointment accordingly. I haven't been to a place that actually ask that before during the appointment. The day before the appointment, I had a friendly reminder, which I thought was very nice. The day of the appointment: my appointment was at noon but I arrived around 11:35 and they were closed for a meeting. I walked around the area and came back around 12:05pm. I had Carolina as my hair stylus and had a great experience and time with her. She took her time and asked what I want and listened to what I need help with my hair. I appreciated her time and diligently asking to make sure that i actually love it. She even offers if I wasn't happy with my haircut, I can come back to have it correct. (Truthfully, I thought she just said for the heck of it). About two days later, I received a post card from Kindest thanking for coming. Today (May 21st), I received a phone call from Carolina checking up to make sure I am happy with my haircut and also offers to come in to have it correct if I do not like it. She went above and beyond with the services and her style is fresh and unique. Thank you. I definitely will be back with her. I used a Living social deal to try this place out. I have long curly/wavy hair and wanted something a little different - mainly some shaping around the face. Karen gave me an absolutely amazing cut for my hair & face shape. Everyone who's seen the pics has said it was really pretty/sexy & she definitely got it to do things I've never seen it do before. If you have wavy/curly/textured hair & want a cut to look fantastic, I'd highly recommend Karen. That being said, if you want anything other than looking fantastic, spend more time on the discussion. I'm really pretty active and really wanted something that would be able to be put up in a variety of ways without coming out all over the place - ponytail, braid, etc. & we agreed on long layers ("there'll only be a two inch difference between the layers") Sadly, the two inches turned into 4-5 inch difference between the shortest layer and longest. This is my only complaint. It LOOKS *fabulous* if I leave it down (I can't emphasize that enough), but the shorter bits are too short to stay in a simple braid at the base of my neck & it's nearly impossible to get into a bun or twist or anything other than a simple ponytail cleanly. So the functional aspect is just not quite there. : / Once again, if you want a fabulous looking cut for longish/wavy hair, highly recommended. read more

This salon is a hidden gem. My first experience was with a stylist named Taylor, and it will certainly not be my last. The Kindest Cut is easily accessible, being located in a shopping center, with free and ample parking. Because of how easy it was to find, I arrived earlier than expected. I was welcomed with smiling faces, and enjoyed refreshments (including one lovely glass of sparkling wine), as my stylist finished up with her prior appointment. The stylists at The Kindest Cut are all extremely well trained, and talented. They are able to be both professional, as well as personable. I noticed that the other clients in the salon ranged in age, as well as hairstyle choices. This is something I look for in a salon, as not everyone will have the same style preferences, but everyone wants a knowledgeable, and experienced, stylist. The salon was also very clean, and well lit with natural light. I feel like this is important, as darker salons can sometime hide mistakes/ mess/ cut corners. My stylist Taylor was superb. She took time in the beginning of our appointment to discuss with me what I wanted that day, and what my typical day to day hair routine involved. I felt like she truly listened to what I told her, and customized her approach so the end results would translate into my normal every day. I just hate it when you go to a salon, walk out looking great, but then can never quite achieve how it looked styling it at home, yourself. Taylor seemed to be aware of this before I mentioned anything, and my hair still looks as good as it did that day (a few weeks later). Taylor's skill with color is mind blowing. She choose to paint on my color, instead of doing foils or basic highlights, in order to achieve a more dynamic and complex result. My hair looks natural, even though I had it colored. I have even noticed that my roots and greys are not as noticeable as they have been in the past, after a few weeks of getting a cut and color. Price was reasonable, and within expectations for a full color and cut. I am pleased, though, because it seems like I may be able to go longer in between appointments, due to the way Taylor applied my color, and cut my hair. Overall - I had a great experience at The Kindest Cut, and will be returning. I live in Baltimore, but travel around MD, DC, and northern VA for work. This quaint, clean, and welcoming salon is far better than any I have found closer to home. Furthermore, the end result was top quality, and exactly what I wanted. No doubt it is worth the trip. I would recommend this to any one of my friends, and have already sent my own mother to have her hair done there as well (which, you know, means I have complete faith in The Kindest Cut haha). I needed a redo of the Brazilian Keratin treatment because my hair was starting to frizz again and with the rising humidity, I needed to have my hair done stat. With my LivingSocial coupon in hand, I headed over to Kindest Cut. Wee, one of the stylists, took me on back and suggested that instead of the Brazilian Keratin treatment, another hair straightening treatment, called the Mane Tamer, I believe. She had said that many of the clients who had the keratin treatment done were not at all satisfied. It was the same procedure except there's 2 types of chemicals that are slathered onto your hair and instead of a flat iron to seal in the treatment, she blow dried it. I see the difference between the two treatments I received. I definitely like the Mane Tamer so much more! Yes, you do have to abstain from washing your hair for 48 hours and you can't put your hair into a pony tail. My hair is a lot smoother, shinier, and flatter. Having frizzy hair is no fun and carving out 30 min. during my morning to style my hair is time that I could be spent sleeping. I would definitely return for another repeat treatment in 5 months. read more

I found this salon on Yelp and decided to try them since they're in my neighborhood. While I love my salon, their prices have gone up and they're located in Arlington. So I was hoping to find a more affordable option and closer to home. I was quoted $168 to start for a trim and perm but my total ended up being almost $300! Having had the same thing done at my usual salon for half the cost, it included a massage, mini facial, makeup touch up and my stylist was the owner. My stylist took his time to dry and style my very long hair, half of the length it is now. For the price I paid at Kindest Cut, the curl was done really well but I walked out with half my hair still wet and total sticker shock. When I asked for an estimate on a simple trim, for future reference, I was quoted $68 to start and style/blow dry was extra, and it all depended on how long it took, which could potentially be at least twice as much. With any estimate, as a customer, you expect it to be a little more or less but not double. Another thing that bothered me was that they operate much like a doctors office if not worse because if you don't cancel within 24 hours, you will be charged. Unlike a doctors office of a flat rate, they require a credit card when making the appointment and would charge depending on what your appointment was for. Unheard of! It's unfortunate because the people are extremely friendly and the location is so convenient. I was really hopeful going in that I had found my new go to salon. read more

I have been going to the Kindest Cut for many years. My mom and grandmother actually have been customers as well. The staff is so nice and experienced, and they have grown to offer many spa services as well. My mother always gets her highlights and cuts there. She also enjoys the paraffin treatment and a manicure that "the artist can do on any type nails!" It has been a little while since I've been there, but I'm sure when I return I will love the service I get! read more

I went here for a sugar back wax last Saturday, offered through LivingSocial. Admittedly, I have (or, I should say, had) very little back hair to begin with. The process was very, very quick, and nearly painless. I'm only giving it 3 stars because I thought their prices were pretty high for what they do. I will say that the staff were very friendly, and offered both me and my fiancee coffee/tea/water. The aesthetician I saw did an excellent job. I was annoyed that my fiancee wasn't allowed in the room during the waxing, though. I was also kinda mad that they wouldn't honor the other waxing service I'd purchased through LivingSocial because they don't do them on men. I'm sorry, I thought this was 2012 and sex discrimination was illegal. Guess not. Still, I'd probably go back for another treatment if the discount was right. The aesthetician encouraged me to follow them on FB in order to get other deals in the future, which I'll probably do. The facility is nice and very clean. read more

I can't even give this joint a star. I went there a few months ago (I would say June) on a Saturday afternoon. there was ONE OTHER CUSTOMER there. I mean the place was practically EMPTY on a Saturday? Really? gave me the creeps. The shop looks very amateurish. Thrift shop "chic" ... I did not know my stylist but she was a young African American girl. Now I am not a racist, but I hesitate to have someone with hair different from mine to color and cut and style my hair. I have had problems in the past with African American stylists and usually opt out. So I gave her a chance. I told her exactly what I wanted (cool, ash blonde color with highlights) and a specific type of cut I showed her pictures of the cut. She gave me a partial highlight (partial???so many foils) and did not put me under the dryer. I don't know how that works, but I was surprised as I am always put under a drier anywhere else. She attempted to cut my hair and I did not have confidence that she knew how to cut hair in a stylist, advanced way. I could tell by her actions that she was over cautious and did not do any of the motions an educated stylist does. But when she was done it looked OK. I tipped her nicely. The total was almost $200. Really? For amateurs? 2 days later I shampooed my hair (using their "custom made" product) I was unable to style it. The cut was terrible. IT was uneven. After a new more shampoos I noticed the color was very yellow. I did not want yellow. Also my hair was quite dry. After a time I felt it was not a good experience and cancelled the follow up appointment. I went to another salon yesterday and that stylist showed me the bad cut and told me that the prior stylist did not condition my hair, and gave it the wrong color for what I described. Never again. I do not enjoy getting pampered. Haircuts, manicures, massages, none of it. I have tried salons ranging from the Hair Cuttery to swanky Georgetown salons. With that in mind, The Kindest Cut is just right. The salon is always clean, the staff is always genuinely friendly and I am always pleased with how I look when I leave. More importantly, I am always pleased with how I look when I do my hair myself. Shaima has been cutting (and now coloring) my hair for a couple of years now. She completely understands how I feel about the process and has never pushed me into a style that I cannot realistically recreate at home. I rarely write reviews but I was not very pleased with the service at this salon. I have long hair and asked to get ombre done. The price for that ended up being $185, and it turned out ok. I wasnt wowed by it but it didnt look bad either. However, the stylist kept complaining how long, thick curly, coarse my hair was and i found that to be quite rude. She also kept complaining to other stylist how long my hair was...as if she was doing it for free, as if i wasnt paying $185. I guess if you have short fine hair, this place maybe ok for you but for people with long hair and any type of wave or curl, its probably best to go somewhere with stylists who have a bit more experience with different types of hair. read more

I decided to come to this salon after it being recommended and I must say how happy I am for coming. The salon was very clean, the entire staff was nice and professional and the owner was so sweet and you could tell she was very excited about her job. I got Cassandra as my stylist and she did EXACTLY what I asked of her. I even booked an appt for 5 weeks later so she can add more color (I have purple now) and let her enjoy herself. I purchased a LivingSocial deal for Brazilian sugar waxing and I thought I would try this place out as it is close to my house. The first time I went the shopping center was old and outdated, but inside, the salon was clean and very nice. Marcella did the sugaring service for me. She is professional, wears gloves, and is not only fast (I was in and out in under 20 minutes), but does a great job. If there are any hard to reach hairs, Marcella uses a hard wax- with no double dipping! My hair did not grow back for almost 2 months! I have been back two more times since then, and the service is still great. The shopping center has undergone a facelift and even looks great on the outside. I will definitely be back! read more

I used to go here MANY years ago (over 10) when LeeAnn was the owner and it was listed in the Washingtonian Magazine as one of the best local salons. Since then I have moved away from the area. However, I had to come back to NoVA when my dad was getting married. I had only ONE day that I could come in and get a relaxation treatment done on my hair. I called two days before and they were fully booked...the kind receptionist (I think her name was Megan) ended up calling me back right after we hung up and told me that a stylist had volunteered to come in early and do my hair. I booked the appointment but was a bit nervous since it had been so many years - would it be the same? I was sure the turn over would have been pretty significant after 10 years. NO SO! Most of the stylists there have been there over 10 years - and my stylist, Carolina was no different. She was awesome and did exactly what I asked - chemical relaxer and a trim. 4 hours later I walked out extremely satisfied and happy that the salon was still as great as I remembered. It is under new ownership now...but that has not affected the quality of service at all. Highly recommended! read more
