We just can't say enough about Kill Devil Grill. I would have to say that on a list of favorite places on the Outer Banks, Kill Devil Grill is at the top, especially for finer dining. We are regulars at Sam & Omie's, Miller's Waterfront, High Cotton, Darrell's, TL's, and Spanky's. We also have enjoyed Collington Café a couple of times. I realize that this represents a range of menus and levels of cuisine, but everytime we eat here we are I impressed at the well prepared food, surprising menu of specials and absolutely perfect service. Most recently we went for Ms T's birthday. She enjoyed grilled shrimp on pasta with fresh tomato sauce and I had blackened rockfish on delicious creamy polenta. Kill Devil Grill is one of the busiest places we go to. We were there at 5:15pm on a Saturday evening in March and the place was nearly full. My rockfish was sold out before I received mine probably 20 minutes later. The specials do sell out, which means they decide to make a fixed number and when they are gone, they are gone. You are assured of fresh food this way. And by the way. Do not pass up the key lime pie! A few days later for lunch on Friday, Ms T had the special fried chicken. This is good fried chicken, but over coated for my taste and under-seasoned. It is worth getting to try once especially if you are an extra-crispy fan at KFC. I would like a lighter coating and some black pepper at least if not a little cayenne. The serving is huge, half a chicken and these are not tiny fryers. I had a burger finally. I skipped the Big Kahuna and just had the Royale cheeseburger, but it was big enough that I only needed half. Medium rare was perfect. It was juicy and not dense in texture. It had great beef flavor and I enjoyed it with shredded lettuce and tomato. Points are awarded for a right-sized bun! This is a different style than Art's, but after Art's I would eat a burger here or Two Roads or Goombay's unless I wanted the distinct diner style at Spanky's. I wish I liked the slaw here, since I don't eat fries anymore. They give you a haystack of slaw but it is infused with geen onion and I ate one bite. Kill Devil Grill is an awesome lunch spot if you are in the Nags Head or Kill Devil Hills area. It is located right on Virginia Dare so if you are at one of the public beach accesses, you can easily walk straight off the beach and into the restaurant for lunch. We came on a Saturday right at about noon and the parking lot was completely full. We expected a long wait, but we were pleasantly surprised to only wait about 10-15 minutes. Two pieces of advice: there is a public beach access lot right up the street if the grill's parking lot is full and when you enter the restaurant go down the stairs to the hostess stand to get your name on the list. Hopefully this will save people some time and hassle. Also, as we waited to be seated we played the "hook and ring" game. I don't know exactly what it's called, but the basic premise is you get a ring on a string to get stuck on a hook. Sounds odd, but it's a lot of fun. Once we were seated, we were promptly greeted by our waitress as she immediately took our drink orders. We got two beers and some waters. The beer selection here is not great, but they did have a couple of craft brew selections. The only IPA they had was "Sisters of the Moon" by Mother Earth Brewing, so we went with that. The menu is fairly basic for a grill and everything is reasonably priced. You're looking at right around the $10-$15 range. We were both pretty sure of what we were gonna get. That was until the waitress came back and listed off the specials for the day. Make sure to ask about their specials because there were about 5 and they all sounded amazing. Brief overview: blackened Mahi Mahi with a pineapple salsa, stuffed chicken, and a bison burger with green chills and a queso spread. We decided that we both wanted burgers and to make sure with both got a taste of everything that the Grill had to offer, we each took half of each burger. The two burgers that we decided to order were the Big Kahuna Burger and the Special Bison Burger. The Big Kahuna Burger is always on the lunch menu and it comes with the toppings you would expect and bacon. The Special Bison burger came with a queso spread, pickled onions, green chills, and tortilla strips. After trying both burgers, the bison burger is the one to go with. If they ever have this as the special when you are there, go with it! The Big Kahuna was also very good. The bacon that they put on here is what makes it. Normally I like my bacon crispy, but they did such an awesome job with this thick cut bacon that I wasn't even worried about the lack of crunch. Both of these burgers came with some thick cut steak fries. They were nice and golden crispy with a good seasoning on them. The service here was awesome! Our waitress was attentive, friendly, and seemed really excited about the food. Everyone that works here seems to buy into the restaurant, which is great to see. We even had the bartender come over and ask us about that bison burger. He said he had his fingers crossed that they wouldn't sell out so that he could get his hands on one. The restaurant itself has a really cool, beachy vibe to it as well. The top portion seems like it is a remodeled airstream trailer. This portion has a bar that is about 15 feet long and a couple of tables. There are steps leading down to a larger dining area that has a handful of booths. There is an open kitchen down below. The Kill Devil Grill has awesome beach diner style food. It is a great place to get a good burger and fries. The people that work here are all friendly and seem to enjoy what they do. You can't go wrong with stopping here during your time in OBX. read more

So I made a trip down to the Outer Banks with this specific restaurant in mind. Someone suggested hitting them up if I ever was down there-I had nothing better to do on a beautiful Saturday, so what was the harm in taking a field trip to the beach? When you pull up it has a divey diner feel to it, but that quickly fades when you see the actual dining area down below. All their specials and rotating fare is written on a chalk board, different specials for lunch and dinner-and the pricing difference is huge too. Luckily I got in on that lunch pricing for fresh local caught Mahi in a tomato sauce, roasted veggies and cheese grits. It was phenomenal. And only $12. So understanding the seriousness of Covid, the website and The Yelp app is not only not user friendly but makes you wait to order your food for 1.5 hours away for lunch pick up. I called the restaurant they said you were allowed to eat In now. I asked if I could come in and order take-out as that would make sense since they are open. This was the best meal I had on my vacation. And it was obvious from the first bite and sip. After parking like a hack on the side of the road, I grabbed a seat at the bar and ordered a Mother Nature IPA. Yum! That's one of the best IPAs I've had anywhere, and it didn't come from some brewery or high concept restaurant. I ordered the fresh catch of the day, the Grouper fish served on top of mashed potatoes and topped with some pineapple salsa. It's so IG worthy, hot damn. This spot was a highlight of our visit to the Outer Banks. The food was great, with a varied list of specials. I had brisket with chipotle potato salad, Mexican street corn, and corn bread with local blueberries, all fantastic! My daughter loved the strawberry shortcake. Ive been wanting to try this place out for many years . Glad I finally stopped in . It was after 1:00 and the parking lot was full. There was one space in the back open so I pulled in. Went in the front entrance which is for the bar area. The bartender quickly let us know how to navigate our way to the hostess for seating ... so the side door is where you enter if wanting a table . The place was packed even the bar area. There is a nice outside area to wait . The menu is perfect . Just enough to satisfy any appetite . Nicole was our waitress . She was fabulous and attentive . We didn't have to ask for anything. She really took care of us. She let me know they give the bill while you eat lunch Incase you need to get going ,but dessert can be added!!! As a fellow business owners we promised to write a good five star review but she encouraged us to give our honest opinion so here it is: we ordered the fried softshell crab sandwich, it sounded interesting and we had never had one before. Not only was the food hot and delicious, the service was excellent. But more importantly, a member of our party lost her hearing aid while we were there and the staff went over and above what you would expect. When we got home, we discovered the loss and went back to find it. Even though they were very busy and another group was sitting at our booth, they looked everywhere for it, they later checked the trash to see if it had been swept up, they even took apart the booth looking for it. My personal favorites are the BBQ Chicken Salad with an actual BBQ chicken breast that tastes like it was just pulled off the grill, fresh sweet corn cut off the cob, black beans, cheese, tomatoes, ranch dressing, and tortilla strips. It's seriously the best tasting, most flavorful salad I've ever had. I ordered it twice this past week for lunch. Delicious!! The Southwest Minestrone Soup was warm and fabulous and just perfectly spicy. Exactly what I was looking for to warm up on a chilly April afternoon at the beach. My husband cannot wait each time we come to get the Back Yard Wings. He eats a lot of wings and these are without doubt his favorite. He ordered them twice this past week as an appetizer. He has also had the Chipotle Turkey Joe, a Quesadilla Bison Burger, and a few of the different fresh catches on the feature board. All outstanding. It is hard for my family to agree on places to eat dinner in the OBX because they all love seafood and I do not, but there is never a debate when we want to dine out for lunch. We have never been disappointed at the KDG. You must also find a way to save room for dessert because this is the absolute best part! Great Service! Great Food! The front of this place is an old diner car and looks small but it opens up into a comfortable cool place to escape the sun and enjoy the service and food. The service staff knew the menu very well including a description of the local fish special of the day. She knew where the fish was caught, the species and a great description of how it would look and taste. The picture is of the barrelfish over cheesey grits with a avocado- corn salsa. This is a very unfair rating, I will admit. My wife enjoyed her meal. My negative review is based on one thing.... On Trip Advisor it says Vegan and Vegetarian options available. We started off with a half pound of the local spiced shrimp which was cooked in PBR, they only use half the can so they bring you the other half to drink. For our entrees I ordered the fresh catch of the day sandwich platter which was tuna. My husband had the Big Kahuna Burger which was cooked perfectly as ordered. Of course you have to save room for their yummy strawberry shortcake. Fresh whipped cream in between two pieces of what had a taste of cornbread but wasn't quite that. So, don't be fooled by the old-school silver diner and think it's a tiny little spot -- there's actually a whole restaurant that extends behind it. You can enter through the front door or there's a side door. And the food is FANTASTIC. Try the chicken wings and the cheesesteak egg rolls. If you have the good fortune to show up early on a Friday, get the fried chicken. This is a great lunch spot and we'd recommend arriving right when the doors open to get a table, because they fill up quickly. The service is fast and extremely friendly.
