This place was absolutely amazing they were packed full we were told it was going to be a 20 minute wait for 5 and it ended up actually taking 20 minutes for us to be sat orders taken and food out and us full and happy. The owner was so personable coming to personally check on us. The food was beyond delicious and the prices were spectacular. When our plates came out the portions had us all in awe. They were huge !! Tried this place on a recommendation from a friend. The food and service was pretty good. I had the Italian scramble. The reason these scrambles are so big is they are all potatoes. Two kinds of hashbrowns as a matter of fact. So many that you are unable to tell that there is anything else in the dish. Believe it or not I hardly even taste the cheese all over the top. I could pick out a piece of sausage here and there, which on its own was good. I don't know how many eggs but couldn't find any, onions either. They are famous for thier muffi s but my blueberry one was soggy and doughy and the cinnamon one was too cinnamony. I couldn't taste anything else after tasting it. I give it 3 stars because my husband had the shrimp omlet and said it was tastey. I want to go back again and try something else, maybe the eggs benidict. Semi warm potatoes that were definitely sitting for a long time or re warmed, bacon and egg omelette, cheese not melted and literally a pound of bacon pieces that definitely looked like bacon bits from a package. Great service, great atmosphere, location, and decor. The coffee however was the worst I've ever been served, so watered down and flavorless I thought I might be drinking weak tea. The food quantity was enormous, almost obnoxiously large, and that would be a great attribute if it were good. The quality of the food was that of a school cafeteria, bland and straight out of a bag when possible. Our omelette came with a cup and a half of un melted pre shredded cheddar and the bacon tasted straight from a pre made bacon-bit bag and also was cold. The eggs were good enough and the bacon pretty good. Overall everything was very bland and under seasoned. Will definitely not be back. The place has great potential though. Great place! The food was pretty good but the service was top notch! You may wait for a table, but they move folks through quickly. Our server was efficient and handed out some "extra" cinnamon muffins to our table. The coolest part was they offer a free meal to all active duty service people with an ID. Great place to load yourself with pounds of potatoes. Sure the plates are enormous and look crazy when they arrive, but you'll see that most of the mass is just pounds of underlying potatoes. Good diner food though. The breakfast meats, thick-sliced bacon and sausage, are killer! They also make a perfect poached egg - not that Im into that, but a friend ordered it and they looked fantastic. They also serve fresh muffins and boy are they tasty! If you order a full order which is only about $1 more, you'll find plenty to take home. Instead order it and split it with another. This place is flippin awesome. Just moved to Whidbey Island from the Bay Area in California and I can honestly say that I haven't had any breakfast that matches portion size, quality, and service. I'm a big guy, but never have I ever seen an omelette I couldn't conquer. Let me tell you now...The Kettle has HUGE omelettes. Delicious too. I however, ordered the chicken fried steak and eggs. Also a big portion! Their portions here are equally delicious as they are big! My brother ordered corned beef and eggs with hash. Holy cow. That was great. Thanks to Debbie our waitress. First time visiting the Kettle on a Thursday Mid- Morning. We sat down and our waitress brought out freshly baked and still warm cookies for us to have with our coffee while waiting for our breakfast. Breakfast was hot, huge portions and delicious. Before we left our waitress brought out two homemade muffins to take home ( we were to stuffed to eat right then and there) . Because the food isn't unique or fancy, but this place is a warm, small ma&pa diner where Dennis and the staff welcome you with a warm smile and a pot of hot coffee. Breakfast perfection. From the scrambles (even the half order is enough for 3 meals - no joke) to the french toast (made with sourdough bread) to the fresh from the oven muffins while you wait. I have NEVER seen this much food for breakfast! Plan on skipping lunch! Most of the menu choices have 1/2 orders available. The food was great. Tasted just like it was made by grandma herself! We drove 45 minutes from Tacoma to get here and we WILL do it again! The service was awesome. Coffee was hot and they kept it coming. They make fresh muffins that come with almost every meal and they are the best around. We were surprised to see the amount of food that came with such a great price. 2 thumbs up on this little charm! Found this place while looking for brunch on the way back from Crystal, and I'm so happy we stopped here. Our waitress was so fun and happy and the vibe was so great that I told my friend the food was going to have to be really bad before I'd give them a bad review. Fortunately, the food was great too. Many items come with a cinnamon or blueberry muffin (served first); I thought the cinnamon one was better. Portions were huge and I had lots left over; as I saw in another review, you might consider the half portions. (I wish I'd had some food containers so I didn't have to use their styrofoam boxes.) Bring your appetite! The portions are large, and if you order one of the Scrambles, they're ridiculously enormous! This place is very homey and casual. It's a family business. Staff is extremely friendly and pleasant. Service was quick and efficient. The coffee is typical diner/coffeeshop caliber: weak and thin, not much flavor, and the flavor that was there wasn't very good. So, if you're a coffee connoisseur, get your morning coffee elsewhere. Hubby got the hot cocoa, and it was good but extremely hot, and they put a handful on mini-marshmallows on top, which held the heat in. So, he had to take his cocoa "to go" when we left, as it remained too hot to drink during our entire breakfast. A muffin comes with your meal. We both chose the Cinnamon Muffins instead of the Mixed Berry Muffins. These were exceptionally good! Not dry at all, but also not oily either. I would love to have their recipe. I got the chicken-fried steak with country gravy, over-easy eggs (you get three eggs with your meal instead of the typical two), and fried potatoes and onions. I ordered a side of sourdough toast (which was extra) so that I could dip it into my egg yolks. The steak was fine, but the gravy was a little bland for my taste. It seemed under-salted, and I tend to prefer quite a lot of pepper in my country gravy; as far as I could tell, this had no pepper at all. The potatoes were tasty, but there was no crispiness to them. And they could have been slightly more seasoned for my taste; I did feel the need to use ketchup on them, which isn't always the case with me. The eggs were perfectly cooked; nicely runny yolks, and fully-cooked whites without being tough. The toast was scrumptious; I don't know for sure, but I suspect that they buttered the toast by brushing melted butter on it, rather than spreading room-temp butter with a knife. It was fantastic. (If you're a person who likes your toast "lightly buttered," you should order it dry, and butter it yourself with the butter pats that are provided at each table, cuz they don't go light on the butter!) My husband ordered a Scramble. It was gargantuan!! It was a plate of the skillet potatoes and onions, topped with scrambled eggs containing all the mix-ins, then more potatoes, then shredded cheddar on top of the whole thing. He loved it, but only ate about a quarter of it (and he has a big appetite). He ordered a pancake on the side, which was as large at the plate. He said it was exceptionally good. I wish I could give this place an extra half-star because of something that they did for us which was above and beyond the call of duty. I accidentally left my brand-new coat there. We live about 20-25 minutes away from The Kettle, so I called to let them know that I would come back in a couple of days to pick it up (they would be closed the next day). But they offered to meet us half-way to hand it off, so that I wouldn't have to wait 2 days for my coat. We thought that was extremely kind and generous of them to offer to do that. We will definitely go back again. The food wasn't perfect, but it was very good, there was plenty of it, at good prices, with great service, and all in very pleasant environment. read more
