For 20-plus years I've been making the pilgrimage to Eugene every few years (usually on the occasion of PIELC) -- and without fail, at some point we would end up at Sam Bond's Garage. But this year -- no Sam Bond's. It's turned into the Whit franchise of a pizza place, apparently. (No disrespect to their pizza. It's delicious.) But. What happened to my favorite bar/music spot in Eugene?? Such an unspeakable loss, if this venue is actually permanently closed. I will remain hopeful that it will be reborn... somewhere else? They just changed the rules and you do have to pay $1.00 per person to play bingo...but where else can you get that type of entertainment for a dollar. We can't wait to return.

The house has been cut-up to the point that it can be a maze, but I have always had fun here. The key is being in the right mood. If you don't like being shoulder-to-shoulder crammed in with people, don't go on a time like Halloween. It helps to either loosen up beforehand or bring a lot of friends. Expect to meet people and get roped into lots of random, drunken conversation/other craziness. If you're terrified of even having to smell weed, stay home and listen to your old Rush Limbaugh tapes. This IS Eugene and it IS a lot of college kids in one place partying.

However, an hour and a half into our stay, we were still waiting on two of our dishes. We communicated to the waitress what dishes we were missing (nicely, we weren't belligerent about it). Apparently there was a misunderstanding, because shortly after, the hostess came over said that it was the waitresses second day and to "lay off her". How she felt we were being rude, Idk but that wasn't the intention, we just wanted the food we ordered, and didn't explicitly blame the waitress. We received another one of our dishes, while the last dish wasn't brought to us until we left. We had to seek out a waitress or bar tender for everything, our checks, napkins, and our food. We were never checked on for refills or how the meal was going. However, we weren't acting upset about this, we were honestly just in grossed in our own conversations, with the occasional "I wonder where our food is" comment. On our way out, we were unceremoniously told we were not welcome back, which again completely caught us off guard, and I suspect there must have been a misunderstanding. It completely ruined the night for us, and I will happily never return. Food was fine, the atmosphere is cool if somewhat undercut by the hostile service. If the owners hope to keep their customers, they should avoid banning their paying customers over miscommunication.

John Henry's Bar abuses women and facilitates harassment from other patrons! I used to be a loyal…read morepatron of this establishment until I was recently ejected from their goth night based on the false accusation from another patron. Apparently, telling another patron not to put their drink on my table so that I wouldn't risk knocking it over accidentally when I sat down is considered a violent act in this town. Half an hour or so after this supposed violence occurred, the bouncer/manager, Felix, informed me that I needed to leave for the night. He stated that someone had made a complaint, saying I had put my hands on them and gotten violent. But if I had actually ever gotten violent with someone, why did it take the alleged victim half an hour at least to lodge a complaint with security? Despite insisting that I'd done no such thing and had simply told someone not to put their drink on my table, I was told to leave or the cops would be called. Felix got in my face and started yelling at me. I had to yell back at him just to let him know that I stood by my innocence. Not even my friend was able to convince the bouncer of my innocence despite having also been a part of the original interaction with the other patron. Even he knew that no physical violence had ever taken place. So Felix thinks it's acceptable to try to intimidate women at his establishment based solely on the lie from another patron with an obvious grudge. Since when is it acceptable for one patron to harass another by falsely accusing them of violence and weaponizing the establishment's bouncer? They refused to refund the money I had just spent on a beer and refused to let me notify my friend that I wouldn't be able to stay. Felix flat out refused to even listen to my side of the situation before judging me guilty. Why would he automatically take the other patron's word for it if he wasn't acting out of a clear bias against me? It was pretty damned clear to me that he was only ever pleasant to me when I behaved myself, then turned into a misogynistic freak once I stood up for myself and refused to accept unfair treatment from him.

I've finally I've been able to visit the Shedd. Well, that's a little incorrect; they were around…read morewhen I was in middle and high school, but as a summer program or resident company at the Hult Center known as OFAM, the Oregon Festival of American Music. Until this past weekend, I hadn't been to a program at their own year-round space that's been here for 25 years or so now. (But I don't feel too bad about that since my sister, who's lived here all her life, has only been once.) Anyway, I brought my toddler to their Magical Moombah show, which is designed specifically for children. We had a lot of fun! It was held in the Jacqua concert hall. The show was kind of variety/vaudeville in style; this one was called Come Sail Away, and it had a loose story made up that was connected by pre-existing songs that matched the theme. There were several time when they invited the kids up to participate--a dance party on stage, a couple of joke breaks, a contest or two, and more. It was a great way to let the kids be involved, and even the littlest kids had an opportunity to join in (my two year old was insistent on making her stage debut, though I think she was a bit shy when she was up there dancing with everyone). They hold this program each quarter and I'll definitely be looking for it next time we're home to visit. They also host concerts, musicals, and other programming. There are a couple of performance spaces, the concert hall being the main one and then recital space. The Shedd is also home to a music school, which seems to take place in the newer wing, where students can take private or group lessons. I will say that their website is really frustrating--almost every link would take me to their calendar, even if I was clicking on Faculty or Welcome--so I'm not sure what that's about so I'd suggest just calling if you have questions. There's a fee if you purchase tickets online (and maybe if you purchase in person with a credit card); in person with cash there's no fee. They have a good parking arrangement with the city that allows for free parking on evenings and weekends in the Lane County lot. There's also parking directly behind their north entrance (I'm not sure if that's the city lot or not, but I don't think so). The lot we parked in was kind of frustrating because almost every spot was marked as compact, and in the year 2026 even in Eugene most people have an SUV or minivan or something, and places just need to stop making most of their parking for compact cars. Some fun facts: Ginevra Ralph, who co-founded the Shedd, is the great-granddaughter of John G. Shedd (namesake of Chicago's Shedd Aquarium in addition to this performing arts center). The Shedd is located in what was once the First Baptist Church in Eugene, one of the largest in the city if not the largest at the time. Also, Marin Alsop, a conductor of international renown, was the co-conducted the Eugene Symphony and the Oregon Festival of American Music early in her career. The Shedd really does have a storied history and lots of great things to come.

The crowd was diverse, primarily 20s and 30s, with a smattering of 40+. A good amount of people but never too many, and overall a laidback and unpretentious vibe. The bartenders were nice and efficient, with a selection of 15ish beers on tap. I thoroughly enjoyed my mozzarella sticks and my buddy loved his Texas bbq burger. The food was made with care and didn't take long to come out. I appreciated the big parking lot. I'll be back at some point!

Birds flying overhead, no ambient noise, a nice little breeze, that part was perfect. Seats were pretty comfortable too, for a concert venue. But there were some issues too. I don't live in Eugene so I don't know this place's history but it seems like it was really meant for smaller events, not "big shows" by popular artists. It's not big enough and doesn't have enough amenities to really support a bigger show like that. But of course that's where the money is. The lines for merch and food were so long you couldn't even tell where one started and another ended. The stage is pretty small, the "big" screen isn't that big, etc. And man was it loud. Definitely bring some ear plugs if you're in the seated area. Parking is free which is nice but it's just a grass field with the bumpiest driving ever. So many holes, bumps, divots, etc. I can't believe I didn't roll my ankle walking in and out. And be prepared to wait 30+ minutes to get out afterward. Would I go back? Eh, maybe. I'm also a little biased because the show started an hour and a half late (not the venue's fault) and the opening act was the worst one I've ever seen at a concert.

Regrettably, the operational knowledge of the amphitheater staff appears to be nonexistent. Due to…read morethe absence of standard directional signage, attendees were reliant on information provided by staff members. Upon receiving our VIP credentials at 4pm, the VIP desk directed us to line up to the left of the stage post-show for the meet-and-greet with Weird Al. This same information was repeated to us by the venue manager Nick among others. Following the performance, after dozens of people had lined up where they were told, at approximately midnight (6 hours later) the venue altered the designated meeting point for the meet and greet, disregarding the major inconvenience caused to attendees, including elderly and those with physical disabilities, who had waited for an extended period and now are being told we are at the back of the new line, likely adding hours onto the time we had to wait to meet Weird Al which we paid alot of money for. After waiting until 1am, and still having dozens of people in front of us waiting for pictures with Weird Al, we were forced to leave without getting our autographed poster and pictures we already paid for. The venue demonstrated a complete lack of empathy, stole our money for "VIP" tickets and declined to rectify the situation even though there situation was caused by their disorganization and lack of customer service. Based on this experience, we advise against attending events at this venue due to its massive shortcomings.

Oddly enough, there were so many bags that didn't fit the criteria, so rules were pretty lac despite the sign outside the entrance. Reserved seats are available on the second level, but tickets were otherwise general admission. It looks to be an old movie theater with most of the seats ripped out. They did keep some seats in the back, helpful for those unable to stand for long periods of time. Murals enhanced the walls leading to the restrooms and second level. Bathrooms were vintage but clean with a mirrored lounge area. Drinks were available in the lobby. The crowd was a mix of generations; many parents with their teens like myself. We caught Sego, their opening band, who were pretty cool. I hadn't seen Warpaint since they opened for Depeche Mode in Chicago, 7 years ago and was excited to see them on their home turf. They put on a great show (unless you had epilepsy, flash was intense) and came out for a double encore. A great time was had by all! Easy walking distance to the parking garage.
