I really hope this place does well. I strolled in a few weeks ago and it was dead - there were two other customers, and the rest of the people in the bar were working there. They are awesome people - I chatted with both the owner and bartender, both cool, laid back guys. As far as atmosphere, The Immigrant is great. I loved the name (and the explanation along with it), and the bar itself is unpretentious, woody, full of space and not too jam packed. I cannot speak to the food, but I think the wine list needs some improvement. For a place that bills itself as a wine bar to have only a few selections of wine, and for that wine to be unspectacular, is kind of disappointing (for example: Trapiche is on the list. really??). Also, my bf's glass of wine was pretty disgusting. So - hopefully next time i stroll in the wine list will be a bit better. If so, review update will be in order. read more

Love this place. The owner is super nice and they have a decent selection of wines. I ordered the Pinot grigio, and I wanted it absolutely cold so the owner gave us an ice bucket for it. I mean really, considering we were there for discounted drinks via Yelp Drinks week, and considering they were already packed, we could not have experienced any better service. The Immigrant was the perfect choice on a cold, rainy afternoon for a glass of wine at happy hour. At first glance, their special isn't much to rave about as their glasses of wine are priced at $8 and drafts at $5. However that applies to every type of beer and wine on the menu (that isn't bottle-only), so it ends up being an impressive deal. Come between 5 and 6:30p and you're set! Per the bartender's recommendation, I had the Vouvray, which was an absolutely delicious choice for white. My boyfriend enjoyed his Pinot noir as well. You cannot go wrong with the wine selection here. Similar to other reviews, the space is smaller, cozy, intimate and dark - perfect for a date or catching up with one or two people. This bar embodies the word "chill" -- the vibe is calm and cool while still being intimate and fun. The menu is simple - a handful of wines and beers on tap - and makes your decisions effortless. I had the Temperanillo and the Malbec, both of which were great and reasonably priced (less than $12). We went on a Saturday night and were able to get a table for the the 6 of us with ease in the back, which is surprising for a peak time in East Village! If you want a categorically chill / laid back but still lovely evening out, The Immigrant should become your go-to spot! The selection is limited but won't disappoint. Even though the space is small, it doesn't get very loud so you can converse with your friends without having to shout (which is a nice change from typical spots in New York). It's a nice space and I like the slate bar. I do not, however, like the wine selection. Whether they are or not, they all taste like cheap, $5 bottles of wine. They just don't seem well-chosen. Having stumbled upon this through a friend. It had take a date here to chill written all over it. While we tried to find a place to sit I could not help but notice couples everywhere. Not sure if it's like that all the time but it's cool I just wanted to talk and chill and this is the place to do it. There are two sides both the same. My friends and I came here on a Saturday night around 10pm. We found seats towards the back on the left hand side. Again for some reason all the couples were on the right side no particular reason. Anyways, this place is not good for big groups (5 or more). The only large table seemed to be this circle table, but it was always occupied. As we entered the guy at the front greeted us and gave us menus as we sat down. He was friendly and nice. My friend and I ordered Pinot Grigio while my other friend order Bordeaux. There isn't a better bar in the East Village. Yes, it's a wine bar but people don't sit around sniffing there drinks. They actually drink them. And they have good time and can get a little raucous, if that's what's in the air that night. It's fun without the snobbery I've encountered at other wine bars and the music is always on point. Ok, so I started here this past Friday evening after a rough day for a quick happy hour while waiting for friends that were running late to dinner. Opting to not drink a vast amount, I just went with one of their ales on tap. Everything on draft was only $4 and wine was $8 until 6:30pm. Not a terrible value. Although, this happy hour is literally a one drink kind of happy hour after work deal. Unless you get out at a ridiculously early time from work and have nothing better to do all day. I ended up getting a Bronx Brewery ale, which wasn't too bad. A little hoppy but not overtly so. One of my friend's that was running late got a beer that was brewed in Queens. It was light and summery and a little bit better. Go Queens. And my other friend had a white wine of which I'm not sure what kind but it was delicious tasting. They have small plates and tapas here. Cheese from Murray's. Though, they probably charge a bit more here than the cheese shop. I think if you check in on yelp you get a free bowl of olives. But I hate olives so that's kind of pointless. The staff was friendly and let us play with their American flagged rotary phone. Nice ambience. Windows and doors open for the warm spring weather and darkly lit and romantic at night time I'd imagine. Though, its kind of pricey during normal hours. read more

I guess I'm a little #biased when I write this review because this is where #brian and I went on our first date, but nonetheless this is an awesome spot. There's two bars right next to each other - one is the wine bar and the other is the beer bar. I've been to both, and both of them are wonderful date spots. Side note for all you fine gentlemen taking some pretty lady here: make sure you note in advance what side you're on. #brian forgot to tell me and I wandered around the wrong side for a bit OOPS! Have had great service experiences both times. We befriended the bartender on the beer side and had great recommendations over on the wine side (and hefty pours). The space is dimly lit and has limited seating, but I've been able to find a spot both times. I went to The Immigrant last night to celebrate wine week with some ladies and had an awesome time. I'd been worried that the small space would prove too cramped and loud but that wasn't the case at all. The ambiance was truly calm and romantic and we had no problem getting a little table spot to share. We were all fairly ravenous so on top of the delicious 4 dollar glasses of Sangiovese (I love wine week!) we split several orders of the meat, cheese, and fruit plates. All hit the spot. If you're looking for Beecher's- or Murray's-level cheese plates with complimentary sauces and such, this isn't the place (though they do serve cheese from Murray's.) Still, the cheeses were yummy, the bread was warm, and the fruit was fresh. The service was also super kind and speedy. Overall, a new favorite East Village wine bar! read more

A real test for a bar in the East Village is how it fares on a weekend night. (As everyone knows, bars on Fridays and Saturdays can really suck). I went to the Immigrant on a Friday night at peak bar-time and it passed with flying colors. Friendly. Out of the way. Chill. Nice lighting. Good music. Good wine and beer. Tasty bites. Did I mention friendly? The owner/manager (?) was really cool checking in with us while we waited for a table. He even brought around homemade cookie treats that an upstairs neighbor had made. This place is a terrific wine bar option in East Village. Excellent wine selections -- their Riesling is one of the best I've tried -- and they also have nibbles like meat / cheese platters, olives, fruits, the usual. We were seated at the bar and the bartender came by with a little tin of MAGIC BAR samples. Half brownie, half granola bar, topped with chocolate and coconut shreds and the perfect accompaniment to my glass of cabernet. I stopped in here to grab breakfast (I guess at 1pm on a Sunday it's called brunch) at the beginning of a day full of apartment hunting. I knew I would need a LOT of energy. I stumbled upon this place and it looked nice and quiet so I decided to check it out. The menu was pretty pricey but feeling too tired to go somewhere else I just ordered an herbed chicken panini and a mimosa. The mimosa was good, though they only poured me half a glass. The sandwich was actually fairly terrible. There was way too much brie on there, which we all know is super creamy and a little goes a long way. The chicken had no "herb-iness" to it whatsoever. I managed to down half the sandwich, some of the potato salad and most of the green salad (which had, as yet, totally unripened grape tomatoes). The guy behind the counter seemed a little pushy about the fact that I didn't finish the entire thing. Not wanting to be rude I said I liked it but was full, and got the other half wrapped to go. That is half a sandwich that will never be eaten. Sorry! I had been debating between the sandwich and a simple greek yogurt with fruit but I hardly think yogurt with sliced up fruit is worth $12 .... well neither is a bad sandwich. However, this is a wine bar and I'm glad I asked to see their drink menu because I saw a couple of good wines listed. Furthermore, it is a very cute, tiny little place. Definitely (or hopefully) seems like a place that gets easily passed up and thus, has a nice quiet atmosphere. I will definitely return one evening to enjoy a bottle of the Nieto de Senetiner Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina. I just moved to NYC last week and I have been trying different places on my list for food and drinks. I love the adventure of trying new places and since there are so many it seems like it would be a long while before I would revisit a restaurant. A friend suggested we have a drink here before our dinner reservations somewhere else. I'm super happy we did. I feel like I will be back sooner than trying a few different wine bars because my experience was that noteworthy. I love the ambiance- dark, intimate, chill unpretentious vibe. Although nice, it's not swanky so you can come as casual as you want. Wasn't too loud to the point you can't hear your company. I think it would make for a great date place. However, exactly just that- one on one time with someone. It's small but I feel like it adds to the charm. We sat at the bar around 8pm on a Friday probably before the rush so it wasn't that bad. We didn't have food but my wine experience was attentive and awesome last night. If I'm unfamiliar or in the market to try something new I always let the host know what I like and don't want in my selection of wine. Then base choices off their feedback. Well, they went a step further and before I knew it I'm pretty sure I tasted all their reds (5-6?) haha That in my book is golden service. I enjoyed all their reds and settled on the ever consistent Cab Sav. Not sure how often they change their wine but if you want something fruity and light I'd say go with the Brouilly. Came here for drinks with someone... very nice. Dark and candlelit, it definitely sets a romantic mood. As the name suggests, they feature foreign wines... the Sauvingon Blanc was delish. The Immigrant is my little home away from home, tucked away on a quiet street in the East Village. The atmosphere is cozy and intimate, which is perfect if you're going to here on a date. Candles set the ambiance here to a warm glow, accompanied by the charm of exposed brick walls behind the rustic cement-top bar. Though they are not a restaurant, they do offer an assortment of small plates including a cheese selection, olives, nuts, and charcuterie. The owner also supports local business getting much of the delicious treats from vendors in the city. Wine selection changes frequently and beers on tap change according to fit the season. They also have a great selection of imported bottled beer, which will happily be poured into the proper glass for you. It's definitely a small place, with a few tables for groups of 4 or so. They will do their best to seat you, so please be patient as the staff are more than happy to accommodate you as best as they can! It is first-come first-served. If you do have to make a reservation for a larger group, they can sometimes accommodate this if you speak to the owner first, but you must be timely. This place is a gem, not to mention a neighborhood favorite. Just like any "Cheers" the locals are known by name here, and the bartenders are likely to chat you up while you're waiting for friends to arrive. One of the neighbors from upstairs frequently makes fresh baked goods and brings them to all the customers in the bar. You can't find friendly camaraderie like the Immigrant has anywhere else in the city! No TVs, no hard liquor here, just wines and beers. Great music, great ambiance, and great company. read more

Awesome little unassuming hole-in-the-wall wine bar. A breath of fresh air when one thinks about the pompous wine bars close to here. Yay for this one (and the name of my fave Zeppelin songs). The kind of place you can go to a few times a month to have a good time, and in the process, learn about wine, what you like, and maybe learn how in the hell people start to say things like "I taste the oak and the aged berries".
