After an overnight stay in nearby Portsmouth, found THL on an internet search for best lobster rolls in area and this place was at top of the list. So on our way home we trekked down 1A to Rye, NH looking for this place. Well worth the stop, easy to place order and wait was minimal. Got the fluffy chowder and hot buttered lobster roll. The chowder was outstanding with good amount of lobster meat mixed in with the clams. It was hot, thick & creamy, the roll was also outstanding and every bit as good as advertised, loaded with lobster meat. It's definitely a repeat visit if ever back in the area. read more

We tried the Lobster Grilled Cheese, Fluffy Chowder, Hot Lobster Roll, and Lobster Bisque. A more expensive lunch for us, but worth it, considering the super friendly and fast service, as well as generous amount of Lobster, and quality. I was a bit nervous heading in 30 min before close. I felt like the soup was a really good value, for taste and quality. I'm partial to soup, and preferred the Fluffy Chowder, as it was less sweet than the bisque, bringing together the best of both worlds. The grilled cheese was very good, chunks of lobster with the right amount of cheese to hold it all together on bread that was perfectly toasted to support what was about to go down. It came with a smaller portion of soup for dipping. Would definitely go back! read more

This is consistently rated one of the best small cafes for Lobster rolls and their "fluffy" clam chowder in NH. Chowder that has beautiful chunks of lobster on top, delicious and plentiful! The warm lobster roll tossed with their signature sherry butter was SO GOOD! It will definitely be difficult to go back to other places that can't compare, especially with the quality of the lobster. Super friendly small place that has a great variety of lobster dishes. It was as good as they say!! read more

Great restaurant with awesome fluffy chowder, full of large chunks of lobster and yummy cream.

Best lobster rolls on the east coast. If they are closed (they close early) the Rye Losbster Pound in Rye Harbour is the same ownership. In addition to the lobster rolls the lobster bisque and lobster mac and cheese are great. read more

My wife and I were in the area and decided to stop in for lunch. On the menu board only a limited items have prices, the rest do not. When it was my turn to order, I asked how much the lobster bisque was? She said $11.99. Then I asked how much Holy Cow was. The woman looked up price in the tablet and said it was $13.99. Her attitude was very impatient. Since the soup was only 8oz and I was hungry, I ordered the sandwich. I settled on sourdough bread for the sandwich. Haha, for this price, I was thinking it would be real sourdough. Nope, it was white sandwich bread that costs less than 30 cents probably. The same woman who took the order delivered our meal. She had a very cold attitude toward us while she was obviously more pleasant and polite to other customers. If she was aggravated by people asking about price of items, they should make effort to write price next to all items. We were just traveling by and have no plan to go back again. On the front door it says Come on in, we are awesome! I disagree. read more

What a gem of a spot in Rye NH! Found this place when doing a search for Lobster Bisque. Read the great reviews and off we went for a quick lunch. It is a quaint place with a small parking lot but it is a spot that needs to be a stop if you are in the area. You will not find a friendlier staff working behind the counter. So lovely and helpful! The lobster- well it was superb! They serve hot and cold lobster rolls and even mini rolls which is what we got to have with our soup. Such a great idea! The mini roll was a perfect size and lobster well buttered and fresh. We tried two different soups the fluffy chowder which is clam chowder with lobster meat on top and lobster bisque with lobster on top. The fluffy chowder is VERY popular. When we stopped in for lunch, there was a line of 10 people waiting to order and everyone in front of us was getting it- one after the other some getting as much as 6 quarts. I have to say of the two soups- our favorite was the bisque. It was so flavorful, thick, and full of lobster. It's good to note they also open early to serve breakfast and have a variety of non-lobster sandwiches which looked good as well. Definitely a winner for lobster rolls and bisque in our eyes! read more

Love this place and the fluffy chowder. The people are so friendly We found it and will make this a regular stop

Phenomenal chowder! My daughter and I were driving through NH and stopped here for lunch. They have chowder, lobster bisque, and lobster rolls among other menu items. The fluffy chowder is full of clams topped with a mound of lobster meat that was fresh and cooked perfectly. The bisque was so rich and smooth (also topped with a handful of lobster)! They also have a mini lobster roll which is nice when you want to eat two bowls of chowder (trust me you do!) The service was great, they were very helpful and patient and it really felt like homey and familiar inside. Note: they close during the winter so plan accordingly!! read more

Being from Texas, I had a few hours to kill, a colleague suggested a drive down NH 1A. I was lunch time, and a quick search for "lobster rolls near me" landed me here. It's quaint, nostalgic, and loaded with personality. (That's just the building!) The staff was exceptionally friendly and quick with suggestions. I just wanted a lobster roll, but when the hostess recommended the "Fluffy" and a seated customer yells, "It's wicked good!" I just had to order that too. The Fluffy is a lobster chowder that is packed all the way to the bottom with lobster. It was fantastic. I also was blessed with a cold lobster roll that was simply delicious. There was no line when I arrived (About 11:45am) and service was so prompt that customers were in and out quickly. They have seating for about 36 people, but there were many "to go" orders being picked up. This is a "foodies" dream come true. read more

The service is quick and friendly. This is my goto location for the best lobster roll on the NH Seacoast. The roll is always fresh from the sea. The meat is sweet and it's not filled with mayo and celery. They do not skimp on these made to order deliciousness. Compliment it with a Fluffy chowdah. Hope to see you there. read more

We had the fluffy clam chowder, the lobster bisque and the mini lobster rolls . The lobster is cooked perfectly . The chowder and bisque were creamy and delicious. The clams and lobster were tender. It is a little shack type restaurant you might miss or pass by but Do Not make that mistake! The service is great. The ladies are friendly and so accommodating . People buy quarts of the chowders/ bisque they are so very good! I hope I have convinced you to give it a go. read more

Wow. The fluffy lobster chowder was the best chowder I've ever had. Tender pieces of potato, huge chunks of lobster, incredible cream. We ordered it with the lobster grilled cheese- white cheddar. Incredible spot! We've been on an East Coast lobster roll hunt, and this is hands down the best one yet. The hot lobster roll is actually hot--not the usual cold lobster tossed in warm butter you find at other places. The bun is perfectly toasted, and the clam chowder is unforgettable. On top of that, every single staff member was genuinely kind and happy. The space itself is adorable with plenty of seating. Highly recommend. read more

This is a brand new spot toward the center of Rye, and an outpost of the Rye Harbor Lobster Pound. We're told the spot at Rye Harbor is famous for "Fluffy Chowder" and their hot/cold lobster rolls, but never had a chance to stop by. Fortunately we were able to get one of the last parking spots and found this place to be busy with a long line of folks. The folks taking orders were very nice and apologized for the delay, but it really wasn't very long at all. In addition to the items I mention, they have a variety of (non seafood) sandwiches, salads and a pretty wide variety of baked goods. As we had never tried the "fluffy chowder", that was our pick. So, what is it? They serve a creamy delicious new england style clam chowder and top it with lobster meat that is cooked in butter and sherry. It made for a delicious combination and given the price of lobster at the moment, we found the portion to be generous for the price. We plan to return when we are a bit hungrier to try the warm buttered lobster roll. Give this new place a try! read more

If you have a lobster craving and want great service and prices. This is your spot and you won't be disappointed.

Located slightly inland, on Washington Rd in Rye, The Hungry Lobster is a must-try. Located in an unassuming building, and with somewhat limited hours (only open until 2) you may not realize what amazing food is in store. When you walk in, you order at the counter. If you're eating in you can grab a table. I ordered a small lobster bisque ($10), hot lobster roll ($28) and Oreo brownie. The bisque was served while I was at the counter. There was large chunks on top, with sherry. The bisque was creamy and decadent, with chunks of lobster throughout. It was incredibly delicious! I then had the hit lobster roll. Like the lobster bisque, it had sherry, mixed in with the butter. The meat was plentiful and fresh, and the bun was griddled with butter. Honestly one of the best lobster rolls I've ever had. The oreo brownie looks delicious but I'm too full to eat it now! read more

If, once a year, Yelp allowed me to give a review six stars, I would spend it on the Hungry Lobster. Dare I call it the perfect hot lobster roll? Steaming hot, buttery, doughy bread with a crispy edge, and so full of flavor... My father lives just a few minutes away, so I come literally every day that I can when I visit. I continue thinking of this place through the rest of the year. My wife and I once hunted up and down the Maine and New Hampshire coast for the best lobster roll and we both agreed this was best. Try it! And say hello to the lovely owner and everyone who works here, they are a treasure too. It's a cozy place to hide from the snow, heat yourself up with some fluffy chowder, and dream of when you can come again... read more

First timer passing through from Portsmouth to Seabrook. Stopped for a light bite to go. Shared cup of chowder with loads of lobster in it...delicious! I stopped by The Hungry Lobster, which is a roadside eatery in Rye serving lobster rolls, lobster Mac & cheese, chowders, sandwiches, salads, baked goods, and cold drinks, eat in or takeout. It's order at the counter here and there's table seating inside. The place was pretty busy around lunch hour and the parking lot was just about full in front. I ordered the Cup of Fluffy Chowder ($9 plus tax) and a Hot Lobster Roll with Lays potato chips ($28 plus tax). The fluffy Chowder was excellent, very creamy chowder with clams, potato, and lobster meat in a butter sherry sauce, oyster crackers included. The hot Lobster roll was served on a toasted New England hot dog run with tender pieces of lobster meat cooked in a butter sherry sauce. Overall, though on the pricier side for food, I loved the fluffy Chowder and I will get a bowl next time. The lobster roll was good and very tasty too, but not big. I will try out one of their regular sandwiches next time with my fluffy chowder. read more

This place only had 6 reviews when we decided to stop here. Normally that would make me question the reviews. The reviews were spot-on. We came on a Thursday at around 12:30. We got two mini lobster rolls at $10 each, one hot and one cold. They were both good and the rolls were soft and fresh. But I'm still not a fan of eating my lobster on bread. We also ordered the Fluffy Chowder. It was really delicious with generous amounts of lobster topping. My husband ordered the Holy Cow sandwich. The owner roasts the beef herself. It was served on a 12 inch roll...it was a huge sandwich with plenty of meat and a horseradish sauce. Next time we come we will get the Holy Cow and a Bowl of Fluffy chowder. It's a lot of food and enough for two people to share. read more

I've been reading about "fluffy" chowder all summer on Facebook, so when we had a free afternoon last week my husband decided to drive to Rye to try it for the first time. The Hungry Lobster is not much more than a food shack - very small with limited parking. We arrived just after 12 on a weekday and found a parking spot pretty quickly - I believe most of their lunchtime business is takeout so the spots open up pretty quickly. There was only one person in line ahead of us. We both ordered a large "fluffy" chowder and grabbed 2 bottles of water to go. Service was quick and friendly. Ten minutes later we were parked at the beach eating our chowder - it was hot and very tasty. A rich creamy chowder base with a bit of lobster bisque on top along with a generous portion of lobster meat. I'm glad I tried it, but next time I may just get the bisque instead - that was y favorite part! We will be back next time we hit the beach. read more

It's small. For me it was hard to find but this was the best lobster roll I've ever had (in 65 years). I chose the warm roll with butter and sherry on a toasted roll. Got a muffin for next morning's breakfast-phenomenal muffin not greasy but flavorful with a good texture. If I'd been in the area longer I would have gone back. Woman who was there was so nice. She stayed open a few minutes longer for me. The hours vary by season but in my 70 years of going to the coast, this was the very best!!! Comfortable setting. Wonderful!!! read more

Food is good, not top notch, but good enough that I returned. Service is great, the staff is very attentive and will do their best to give you what you requested. It has that beach vibe without having to go the beach and you can choose to eat outside which is always nice when the weather is good. Clean from too top to bottom. read more

The absolute best lobster bisque we've ever tasted anywhere, plus a distinctive lobster-plus-clam chowder that will make you wonder why nobody ever thought of that before. Everything about this place shows creativity in the kitchen, attention to detail and excellent service. The chef/owner's warm personality only adds to the specialness of this place. Not to mention the baked delights - from outstanding cookies to morning muffins. Do yourself a favor the next time you're anywhere in the neighborhood - stop. savor. enjoy. If you blink you'll pass it. The chowder is absolutely TO DIE FOR and the woman who served us at the counter was so sweet. came here based off of another yelp review and they did not disappoint at all. We opted for the regular and not the fluffy chowder because I just wanted something "light" I know I know nothing about chowder is light. I didn't try them, by the American chop suey, shrimp scampi, and desserts in the fresh food case looked really really good. Next time we are in the area I am going to try their lobster roll because it looked overfilled with claw meat and on a perfectly toasted bun. read more
