To celebrate my recent Birthday, Gayle and I decided to come down the Bay Area for another great Berkeley Rep Play (The Far Country), followed by dinner at Biancoverde, and then upstairs for an overnight stay at the Hotel Mac. CONS - None! +/- - The room doesn't include breakfast, but there was plenty of options within Point Richmond the next morning. - Communication with the Hotel had its quiet moments, but things worked out well in the end. PROS 1. Point Richmond is a cool, pretty, and safe little oasis in the distant shadow of I-580 and Chevron. This is a great area for walks around town, visiting the Richmond Plunge, or going for longer hill and shore hikes. 2. Free secure parking available for Hotel guests across the street. 3. Gorgeous historical building including the restaurant and the upstairs rooms. 4. Our room (HMS Wanderer) was comfortable, nicely appointed, and very enjoyable. It's a room that we will most likely come back to.

If for some unforeseen reason, I needed to stay overnight in Richmond, this would be the hotel I'd try to reserve since Point Richmond is such a charming hamlet relative to the rest of the city. Recently renovated, the hotel has seen me go as far as the bar, but I've been quite pleased by the destination as the bartenders are quite cordial here. My first visit here was over Thanksgiving week when the lobby was barely decked out with boughs of holly. It still seemed like an appropriate time to try the $15 Keoke Coffee with brandy, coffee liqueur, creme de cacao, whipped cream, and cinnamon (photo: https://yelp.to/toseURdFCg). A very Christmassy and caffeinated elixir. In fact, I was so much in the spirit I ordered the $13 Negroni. It was a smoothly potent mix of gin, vermouth, Campari, and orange bitters (photo: https://yelp.to/6VvArkcADS). Weeks passed, and I returned not only thirsty but a bit peckish. I had the $15 Espresso Martini which the bartender Robin with a nice infusion of caramel (photo: https://yelp.to/pVc5uUkB8o). This time, I ordered from Biancoverde's Italian dinner menu and tried the $15 Burrata Frita. The cheese was lightly encrusted and accompanied by toasted bread and roasted tomato & arugula salad (photo: https://yelp.to/aAnGCKxsX8). It was a pleasant antipasti plate that complemented the martini quite well. I liked how lightly populated the bar was during both visits. Robin even remembered me from the same drink order I made at Little Hill Lounge months earlier. Wow, what a memory. DRINKS / FOOD - 4 stars...I can only comment on the premier bar experience, never stayed here AMBIANCE - 4 stars...retains its nice vintage feel SERVICE - 4.5 stars...the bartenders are very attentive with great memories like Robin TOTAL - 4 stars...eventually I'll get a room here RELATED - Exploring Richmond? This is a review for the hotel, not the Biancoverde restaurant. Absolutely loved our stay-cation at the Hotel Mac. Enjoyed an in-room fireplace, easy wifi, and secure parking with in/out priveleges. Desiree took care of us with the phone call ahead with the secure contact-less check-in instructions-- all the doors are personally coded to make your stay so easy. Such a memorable stay. I can't say enough good about it. You will love it!

I have been coming here for decades. Lovely memories with my parents and friends. Lots of time spent in the cellar room. Stopped by on our way home from Petaluma on a Monday evening. Under new management and new Italian menu. Bar looks the same and drinks looked well put together and male bartender seemed Very inviting and friendly. There is also a very diverse cocktail menu. I ordered minestrone soup which arrived piping hot but lacking flavor. I then moved on to the appetizer portion of steamed clams for my entree. It was a toss up clams or mussels. Our waiter said the mussels were spicy. I told him I don't and can't do spice at all, absolutely no spice or heat. He said the clams were not spicy at all. They arrived, all were all open which was nice. I always hate losing several due to them not opening up. One bite and although they were not extremely spicy there was notable heat to them. Not something I can tolerate so back they went. They had been served with two pieces of toasted bread that were old and not edible. I was very disappointed in my Meal My dining partner ordered the risotto which she said was excellent. We also ordered the melon appetizer which was very good. Service was just OK. The woman who seated us was not Personable what so ever. As we passed the wine cellar room I asked if they still had it for dining she abruptly said "yes, we are not seating there" and continued to walk in front of us. We had reservations and were placed in a small table against the wall. We asked to be moved and she abruptly said no and Walked away. I have mobility issues so being moved would have made my experience a bit More comfortable. I did not Feel like chasing her down so I just dealt with it which is unusual for me but I was tired and just Wanted a familiar, mellow, good food dining experience. I don't know if she is done with people Reminiscing about coming there before new management which I am sure happens daily, but if you want those of us that grew up there to continue to come back I would Think you would honor Those memories and encourage us to make new ones. I shared countless dinners/celebrations in the cellar with my parents who are no longer on this earth. It would have been nice for her to acknowledge my Comment other then you Can't sit there. I don't know her mindset maybe she was having a hard day but that should not impact customer experience. So for this diner this experience was not enjoyable nor memorable for me to return for dinner. Hoping it was just an off day so give it a go yourself. I might check out the bar vibe If in the area again.

Pepperoni and mushroom pizza for the hubs. He loved it - said it rivaled our favorite east coast pizza!!

The food was good my only complaint is they don't offer happy hour to you unless you sit at the bar.

Property well maintained, clean, and area felt safe. Plenty of free parking. Nice bistro. Loved the breakfast plate with eggs, well seasoned potatoes and bacon. They also make a nice breakfast sandwich. Starbucks coffee is featured at the bistro as well, tasted great. Rooms are comfortable and best of all, warm. We went during Thanksgiving so the area can be cold, was nice to come back to the warm room. Comfy beds, slept very well, nice selection of TV channels with Netflix, Prime, Youtube available as well with your login as well as local channels. Areas of improvement: Our room was not cleaned at all for the first 3 nights. They only offer every "other" day cleaning so this was very disappointing to come back to an unattended room late after Thanksgiving with family. I even asked them to make sure to clean at the front desk on the way out! The couch and ottoman in the room are dirty. Visible stains on the cloth as well as the pillows. Did not want to sit on it at all. Bistro only has one person working the front. Eduardo was working his butt off and needs a serious raise!! During one of our mornings, there was a line of about 3 people so we opted to eat elsewhere because we read online it can take very long. Marriot, please have two people working the bistro. Poor guy was taking orders, making coffees, doing it all up front. Also, chairs in eating area were dirty, needed wipedown. Elevator needs repair, only 1 of 2 was working, and it wasn't very smooth. Very hurky jerky. It also needed major cleaning. The walls of the stainless door unclean. Elevator floor was also dirty. It looked like it was only vacuumed once during our stay. Need to fix the lights that number the floors as well, small things count! Thank you for the free breakfast coupon for not having cleaned our room, we did appreciate that. Overall, room was good (minus the couch). I'm hoping these issues will be resolved because there were definitely some nice things about this place.

There's a sitting area as well so makes the room pretty spacious. For the bathroom, different layout than most Courtyards where the sink area is outside the bathroom it works although the counter space was quite limited. A big plus especially for this area is free parking and definitely lots of it. It's located more in Richmond than Berkeley but I liked that it was located near the freeway but not that close where you could hear the traffic. Unfortunately there weren't stores or restaurants with walking distance but they do have a bistro that serves breakfast and dinner and also a bar. Staff is very friendly and helpful.

They offer breakfast (hot or cold) that you could have brought to your room or you could go to the lobby dining area and enjoy. The breakfasts are for a cost. They offer free beverages in the lobby like fruit infused water, tea and coffee. Security seems on par as I felt safe in this hotel. There are some cool walkable restaurants and stores around the hotel. The staff were all nice to me. I recommend this hotel.

Despite charging top-tier prices--comparable to the Courtyard Marriott--the accommodations were outdated, unclean, and poorly managed. Filthy and Poorly Maintained The entire building smelled like dog urine and smoke, including the hallways and elevators. Elevators had accidents from dogs (urine and feces), and the staff did not clean them promptly. Room furniture and appliances were old and worn out--not worth the price they're charging. My bathtub was stained pink, and cleanliness overall was questionable. Overpriced with Minimal Services They treat the hotel like an apartment complex, yet they barely provide cleaning services. Rooms are only cleaned every three weeks, and guests are expected to take out their own trash--all while paying nearly $3,000 a month. They don't even have smart TV options. How lame!! Breakfast was a joke--just coffee and muffins. No toast, fruit, or real breakfast options for what they charge. Unethical Pricing & Sneaky Fees Amanda, a front desk staff member, removed me from the system when I was extending my stay--this resulted in losing my lower rate and being quoted a ridiculous $3,300 per month. No one informed me about corporate discounts--I had to find out online that I was overpaying. They deliberately locked me out of my side entrance access and messed with my reservations in an attempt to overcharge me. When I checked out early, they refused to provide a receipt--I had to video call and take screenshots just to document my charges. Later, I discovered sneaky late fees and rate adjustments, meaning I likely overpaid. Rude & Shady Staff The staff had a "nice nasty" attitude--acting polite on the surface while overcharging and making things difficult behind the scenes. The manager was condescending, pretending to care when I checked out early, but was clearly upset I figured out their pricing scam. They watched me on security cameras and revoked my key access to certain areas without notice. They kept calling about a smoke detector issue that wasn't real, seemingly to intimidate me. Sending maintenance staff up to my room in the day when I was working remotely in my room. Final Verdict: Stay Away! This place is run by incompetent and shady management that tries to squeeze every penny out of guests while providing filthy, outdated accommodations. They might have gotten extra money out of me, but they lost a long-term customer. I had a six-month housing stipend and would have stayed, but their dishonesty and poor service made that impossible. Do yourself a favor--stay at the Marriott next door (do your research first) or explore better options. Avoid this place at all costs!

We insisted that she come to assess the room immediately to ensure transparency regarding our refund request. Cecilia did not come to inspect the room and mentioned that they would check it later. I requested to speak with the manager, but none was available at that time. We agreed to call the manager. When I called, I spoke with the manager, Durga Dhakal, to inquire about the status of my refund. He did not request any information and simply stated that a refund could not be issued because the bathroom appeared to be used. I clarified that I had not touched anything in that unclean bathroom. However, during previous stays at this hotel, staff still knocked on my door to ask when they could return to clean the room, which made this explanation extremely frustrating. On two separate occasions, front desk staff told me directly that my room would be cleaned, and it never was. One front desk employee was dismissive and spoke to me with an attitude that made me feel disrespected. To make matters worse, the hotel uses automated text messages sent from "Glenda." I responded around 11:30 AM requesting housekeeping because I had work calls scheduled. I left my room for a period of time, returned to find it untouched, and later received another text stating they were unable to clean my room due to a high volume of rooms. This contradicted what I had been told earlier and was extremely disappointing. The room itself is in serious need of updates. First and foremost be careful if you are going with the pictures on their website. The biggest issue with this hotel is either they are not paying any attention to the photos they are attaching to the room type or they are trying to bait people with the photos and hope that they are not bothered by what they are getting. I booked a 1 Bedroom Suite, 1 King, Sofa bed, City view. In the pictures it shows for that room it looks like its an open concept for the living area with a full size sofa and a separate bedroom. There appears to be a fairly large table with a little circle part of the table at the end for dining. Also the description implies that it sleeps 4 and there is a view of the city. What I actually was put in was a very small room where immediately upon entering there is tiny closed off kitchen with a little 3 foot table. On the other side of the kitchen wall there is a living room about the same size as the kitchen with a very small love seat sofa that converts into a twin bed. Also my windows looked out onto the roof of a museum and on the other side a dirt lot under construction. Honestly, I could care less about the view and I personally am not normally very picky on what type of room I get when traveling for business but in this case I have 4 people traveling in my party and my reservation reflected that so to be in such a different room than I selected was a tad concerning as it only sleeps 3 and there is not much space. Within the first few minutes of being here I called down and said "I don't mean to be a bother but I don't think I was given the room I booked". I meant it to. I really didn't want to be a bother. I expected it to be a quick oh ya, you are supposed to be in ______ and we will get that switched. Instead a rep named Chauncy (not sure if I spelled that right) told me I was in room type ___ (some 3 letter code I shouldn't be aware of) and that's the correct room. I explained the things I highlighted above and was put on hold so she could talk to the manager. After a few minutes she came back to me and said "since you are disappointed we are going to go ahead and upgrade you to a room on the 14th floor like she was doing me some sort of favor. Besides the fact that I have status with Marriott and upgrades are typically offered anyway if they are available I wasn't asking for a favor and I said I am not looking for an upgrade. All I want to do is get the room that I booked. She basically rephrased and said "Sir, since you are not satisfied we will go ahead and move you to the 14th floor so you can have a better view". I honestly felt like she wasn't listening to anything I said. Its like all she thought I cared about was the view. On principle as I wasn't looking for a handout, I said you know its fine we will keep the room and I will just post about it. She couldn't care less and gave me a canned response of ok let me know if you need anything else. I ended up having our 4th person stay on my sons couch at his appt. On a side note be prepared for a crazy parking rate if you are driving. Parking is tough up in this area but that's pretty normal. It also might have been a crazy weekend so checking in took a long time.
