I booked the Shattuck Suite directly through the Hotel Shattuck Plaza website because of the specific amenities shown in the listing photos, especially the 1.5 bathrooms and dual-sink layout. Those details were a major reason I chose to pay for that particular suite. When I arrived, I was informed the suite had been oversold and I was placed into a different suite that did not match the room I reserved or the amenities advertised online. To be fair, I tried to stay understanding and keep a positive attitude during the stay. At checkout, I was told management would work with me to make things right and that I should follow up with the General Manager. Unfortunately, after four emails, multiple follow-up attempts, and two weeks of waiting, I have received no meaningful response from management. Mistakes can happen in hospitality, but ignoring a guest after promising a resolution is disappointing, especially when a premium room was booked specifically for its advertised features. Hi all! My BFF lives in Berkeley and I finally decided to stay at "the Shattuck" as he calls it.. The place is great! The food at the hotel is really good! I had bar food from the bar one night and breakfast from the restaurant the next morning. I was lucky enough to have Al waiting on our table, which never lacked a refill of tea. I stayed in room 511 - omg!!! See the pictures of the Golden Gate and Mt Tame in my review. The room was well appointed and very quite. Huge bathroom and the hugest closet (with a safe!) I have ever seen in a hotel room. The staff treated were friendly and helpful - and yet nicely chill. It's just nice to feel a little of that famous chill for a minute. We really enjoyed our stay! Service from the staff was always great! Room was nice, small, but perfect for a couple. It was on the street side which gets a little noisy at night, but nothing white noise can't drown out. It was clean, bed was comfortable. They had coffee or tea pods for a Keurig which is a nice touch. The bathroom has a nice rain shower head and also a body spray attachment which was nice. This is the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. They offered us a discount for a two night stay and refused to honor their discount offer. The shower head was broken- had to use a handheld showerhead The room safe didn't work. The bedside lamps didn't work. How is check in strictly at 4 pm yet check out is not? For the exorbitant price of their tiny rooms, you would think they would be flexible & allow a 3 pm check-in. My husband booked a room before he read the reviews. We flew in for a stay here & were denied access to a room until 4 pm. How can check out be at 12 pm and no rooms be available until "4 pm the earliest " Also, young woman at check-in desk was not very welcoming or helpful. She Was in the back & saw us thru the door mirror yet would not come out. A different attendant was able to help with our reservation when we overheard another couple checking in after us and getting their room right away while the room wasn't even under their name. Nice historic hotel. Beds are comfortable, a little small. We stayed in a double bed room. If you are a tall person, you should get a king size bed room for sure. The room was a bit chilly, when I turned up the heat on the thermostat nothing changed the temperature of the air coming out. Everything was clean. The towels are rough, not very soft. The hotel was comfortable and clean. I would stay here again if coming back to Berkeley. read more

Very chic historic hotel with a great bar upon entry at check in. We did not eat breakfast here but seen some of the dishes of others and it looked very good. Very nice and clean rooms with a kuerig and a small Dolongi espresso machine. Nice and cozy for a place that is historic. Great beds and shower heads. Could not hear any traffic noise even though our window was facing the main street. Would definitely stay here again! read more

I'm all for following policy, but when check-in strictly starts at 4:00 PM and there's a line snaking through the lobby by 3:50 - with not a single staff member visible at the front desk - it starts to feel like a scene out of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Only then did it turn 4 that one host began finally checking people in. The room felt dated, and they were still cleaning rooms down the hall when we finally got up there. The whole place feels poorly managed and loud--definitely not ideal if you're in town for an evening event and need to settle in beforehand. At the very least, they should offer a free drink or some gesture to make the wait less frustrating. Also, skip the valet. It's overpriced (double what's across the street) and painfully slow. When we stay in Berkeley, which isn't often, I always check the Hotel Shattuck first for any deals. Booking direct and prepaying sometimes helps! On our recent stay, the staff and their friendly service really bumped up our experience to 5 stars. Personable and professional people! Had some drinks and tasty bar snacks at Zino Bar. Our room was comfortable and had everything we needed, including a microwave and mini-fridge. The walls might be on the thin side - we could hear conversations happening in the hallway as people passed by at night. Decent location and the breakfast was good. That's it. People are nice but slow. We left items in the room and called immediately that night from another city to have returned-- of course they were there, but a month later I am still trying to get them back via their in-house lost and found computer system and no one person seems to ever be around or can help me other than "taking my number and having someone call me back". Ludicrous. AND, Im still getting automated emails from the hotel telling me they are still looking for my items. A joke of a process. If you need a place to stay it's a place to stay but old and showing it. Don't know how clean it is but not very-- curtains are dark and carpet worn and stained- filters on both the AC unit and the bathroom fan were visibly clogged with dust. Temperature as others describe-- nothing changes when you try and alter it. Beds have thin polyester sheets and a blanket. Parking costs 50 dollars overnight. Won't be staying again. I went to NorCal in a heat wave. Which isn't the hotel's fault, except... I arrived and went to checkin and the person at the desk said it wasn't checkin time. It was 3:55pm; yes, I was 5 minutes early. I asked if they would message me when my room was ready. No they couldn't do that. So I waited in the very hot lobby until after 4... or whatever the actual checkin time might be. At 4:30 I looked up and there was a line 20 people deep trying to checkin. At 5pm the line was even longer so I gave up and stood in line... where it was even hotter than the table in the bar. Eventually one of the staff was offering glasses of ice water or cava to everyone in line which did help. By the time I got to the desk, I was dripping with sweat and I felt bad for the people working the front desk. I had already read the Yelp reviews and made sure I was not on the floors with poorly working AC. My room was lovely with good AC and a comfy bed, a fridge and great water pressure. WiFi was fine. The proximity to campus is good, just a short walk. But the area has definitely been hard hit lately with lots of closed storefronts. I did not order food from the onsite restaurant which had a limited menu. Overall the room was good. The lobby was sweltering. The staff were fine to great. But the price was too high for the area. read more

I am not sure why my husband booked this place. I am a Marriott rewards member and that is my preference as they provide excellent customer service. The room is ridiculously small, it almost feels illegal. There is a stand alone air conditioner present. The input for the wall for AV doesn't work. Tonight upon arrival back from our outing we were told by this smug valet kid that "you have to find your own parking". Mind you we are paying $50 per night for valet parking so to say "there's no space available" is absurd. Not to mention we are not from here so how do we know what areas are safe? This is unacceptable and completely ruined our evening. Not to mention, the shower is extremely small in this room, granted I am sure there are bigger rooms but I have never experienced such a small shower. I scheduled a nonrefundable reservation for late September for myself and a friend, that was driving to Northern California to meet me. In the meantime, her home flooded and she had to cancel the trip. I contacted Hotel Shattock and explained the circumstances to someone at the front desk, who referred me to a manager. I ignorantly thought that if emergent circumstances occurred that caused a trip to be canceled that the hotel would be understanding. That is not the case. The manager was very kind, but made it abundantly clear that her bosses will not allow her to refund a this type of reservation, regardless of the circumstances. Do not let the amazing website fool for you this hotel! It presents beautiful photos and nice rooms. This was definitely the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. Location is not great, no Wi-Fi in the entire hotel works, which means the TV have no Wi-Fi or anything to watch. Limited tv channels, blurry tv, ice machines do not work. One elevator worked for the entire hotel with made people wait and wait and WAIT. I called the front desk for the WiFi and tv issues which they replied they could give me free vouchers for food, but not fix the problem. I was in a corner room, which was very loud with my surrounding neighbors taking zoom calls all night all morning; slamming doors. Housekeeping never came and I called that request as well. The restaurant has very limited Mediterranean options, overpriced. The wine is $15 a glass. They did not have any grabbing options. They said it was closed at the time so in the morning you could not even get anything at the hotel. The Starbucks is advertise as being in the hotel, but it is not have to walk all the way around the block. The room was tiny, the smallest room I have ever been in and I booked a deluxe.... I will not be back- save yourself and book at the Doubletree Marina. I will be going there for all bookings from now on. read more

Just ok. I have stayed here twice. There has been a lame surprise both times. To start the historic hotel architecture is amazing and a stunning backdrop for a great bar. But the bed in the room was a double which was fine, but also not for deal for two people. The kitchen was "out of order" so don't look forward to room service. There was in decent in room coffee, otherwise it would have been a complete disaster. Location is excellent. read more

Really was excited to stay here but won't be coming back. So many problems and we only stayed one night. On a good note, the hotel is pretty and the room was nice and clean. Hard to valet as they only have about 5 spots so had to circle around many times in order to park. The 3rd & 4th floor apparently doesn't have great air conditioning so our room was a hot box. By the time we left at 9:30 am, my one year old son's hair was soaked from sweating. Our bedroom was locked when first arriving. Our keys didn't work the night we stayed, had to go downstairs twice and get escorted into our room. And woke up to homeless screaming from 6-7 am. So, wouldn't recommend. This was our second stay at the hotel, which is a great location when attending events at Zellerbach Hall or Berkeley Rep. The rooms are small but nice, and the beds comfy. There is a restaurant on site, Zino's, and we tried it for both breakfast and dinner this last visit. Dinner was okay, though the service was pokey. A large party had been seated just after we arrived, and the waiter was distracted and unorganized. The key photo is of a grandly-proportioned room from which you can see an expansive view out of the two large windows. Don't be fooled. I didn't give it a second thought when I checked in and the woman at the front desk started extolling the quietness of the room I'd been assigned. Indeed, I would soon discover I couldn't hear any outside noise over the constant, unstoppable motor of the air conditioner mounted on the wall. The room was also about half the size of the sample featured on the website -- and through its single window I had a perfect brick wall view of another arm of the hotel. Nothing expansive here. From the rooms our family was assigned, one quickly discovers there's little correlation between a guest's reserved room category and the room one is actually assigned. Front desk staff have been instructed to talk up the benefit of having accommodation that DOESN'T look out onto the street and beyond. Yet there's not actually much noise in this very depressed stretch of downtown Berkeley -- which brings me to my other chief warning about staying at the Hotel Shattuck Plaza. The majority frontage is along a shabby block of Shattuck Avenue in which the building's retail space is all vacant and has become a sidewalk sleeping space for members of Berkeley's unhoused population. While this never-again Shattuck Plaza guest understands the property's downtrodden location is not of its own making, the deceptive marketing of the accommodation is. Best to avoid. read more

I've already directly emailed the hotel so I'm not going to rehash my issues in detail here. I should have read other Yelp reviews before I booked. Main complaint - I was just there in August. There was a known AC problem on the 4th floor as detailed in other Yelp reviews but they still booked me there with no alert. Miserable the first night. The second night I pleaded for a portable fan. Check in system on first day was down. I went away for 3.5 hours and it was still down when I returned but they did at least check me in manually. I agree bar drinks are too expensive. I agree the food spices don't work for everyone. I agree the valet parking is too expensive. But I also rated it three stars because there were some positives. The staff were nice and tried really hard but they need more proactive customer service training to resolve issues. I personally liked my room and didn't mind the size. The room was spotless and the bed comfortable. Great walkability for campus and the surrounding areas. I noticed on their corporate website they are looking to fill some management positions. Beautiful hotel inside, but no on site parking. Nor is there a valet option. I was a little nervous because there is a parking garage across the street where I was told I could park, but it was dark and in the evening. All women know to avoid parking garages when traveling alone, but my only other option was the street, which was dirty, smelly, and had lots of unhoused. Completely unsafe. I was on the fourth floor (near the top) and there was still a lot of street noise. I wouldn't recommend this place for sensitive sleepers. Also, my room was across from the elevator bank and there was quite a bit of light that came in through underneath the door. The hotel itself is very nice - updated rooms and chic decor throughout. Would have loved a more substantial comforter on the bed, but I understand this is personal preference. Bottom line - an ok stay. Just a little concerning area. Not sure if this is something pervasive in Berkeley because this was my first trip. But, I'll definitely be more careful to book only where there is a valet. read more

The hotel itself is fairly nice and the staff is friendly. The neighborhood around the hotel and the lack of noise insulation makes the stay not worth it. The hotel is close to campus but downtown Berkeley is so noisy and run down. At all hours of the night, buses, trucks, and homeless are making incredible amounts of noise. Because the AC doesn't work, the hotel installed window units which exacerbates the noise. It's impossible to get a good night sleep. Also, the pull out sofa mattress is unusable. It's no pads, all springs so don't think about using it for kids. Save your money and go somewhere off Shattuck that has actual insulation. Also, the bartenders aren't very friendly. read more

I had a 2 night stay at this hotel and I'm surprised at some of the unfavorable reviews I read about the following: - cleanliness: my room was very clean, bed was comfortable and bathroom was in good condition - sketchy area: it's in the heart of downtown Berkeley which is not sketchy. The main streets are well lit, safe and lots of pedestrians around. Yes, there are unhoused people on the streets but no worse than downtown San Francisco or any other major west coast city - customer service: my check in and check out experience was courteous, helpful and efficient I enjoyed my stay at the hotel and it gave me a good opportunity to explore downtown Berkeley. It was a great alternative to paying $800+ per night hotel prices in San Francisco because there was a major conference in town. My travel to the hotel was a short ride (22 mins) on BART's red line from SF's Embarcadero or Montgomery Street stations to Downtown Berkeley station. The hotel is then just a 100 yard walk heading south from the station. read more

We came here for a night and love boutique hotels so thought we would give it a chance I didn't look at the reviews and I should've we got there and had an amazing check in and valet so far so good got to our room and it has a funky smell not sure if it's from being old or something going on with their ac system but the smell not so pleasant we got into our room and yes it's small but we don't need a big room if we are going out and about and only there to sleep so it was perfect for us down side is we came back late from the concert so no room service or bar got to our room at 11 and wanted to watch some news before bed but the tv was not working I tried everything before I called down to the desk to ask for help but no one answered I tried 2 times and nothing. We had breakfast and it was delicious the poor ladies running around doing everything bussing tables making drink serving food taking orders they were hustling seemed they needed additional help the cook came by and asked if we enjoyed our meal that was nice and yes very good would go back just for the food upon checkout it was very efficient suffice to say we will not be coming back as much as I wanted this hotel to be the best it was a disappointment read more

Gayle and I stayed here a couple of weeks ago, in conjunction with seeing "Wintertime" at Berkeley Rep. It was great to see live theater again, albeit within reduced capacity seating and the audience in masks. It was also nice to walk from our Hotel to the Roda Theater and back, while having our car safely parked in the nearby City Garage. Our only quibble was that breakfast service was confusing both in terms of elevator signage and incorrect information provided by the very nice person who checked us in. My current understanding is that breakfast is not complimentary, and consists of a "grab and go" option during weekdays and restaurant service on weekends. The room was very nice and comfortable. We got the top floor and with a really nice view of the bay. There was plenty of room to sit, relax, and sleep. The shower water was hot and strong and the Wi-Fi did the job. The only odd thing was a small bathroom that included a mirror directly across from the toilet. The Zino bar was a highlight. We stopped by for a drink after check-in on Thursday and then with family after dinner (La Marcha). The bartender was great, which really added to the ambiance of any already great thirst parlor area. I'm sure we'll be back as we remain Berkeley Rep season ticket holders, even though we've moved to the Carson City, NV area. However, with the recent opening of the nearby Marriott Residence Inn, we wonder how the Hotel Shattuck's business offerings will change in a Downtown area where there's traditionally been fairly little accommodation competition. I have stayed here on 2 occasions on work visits associated with the university. The booking was not straightforward and their answering service is not well informed. This created a lot of prolonged billing issues for me. I experienced an issue with the condition of the hotel. I am allergic to mold and had a reaction here. Even with allergy medicine, I had a runny nose, itchy sinuses, and cough. I usually take allergy meds when traveling, but rarely ever have any symptoms while medicated. My symptoms stopped right away after leaving the hotel. It was hard for me to get a good night's rest. They probably do not do regular duct cleaning and it is an old building so the mold could be coming from multiple sources (not just the air ducts). The staff were really considerate and friendly though. I needed a razor and they gave me one. Check in was very easy. read more
