This place is honestly gross. You know how you walk into some hotel rooms & just smile knowing how comfy and relaxing the stay will be? This is not that hotel. Had to check the entire room and all thru the beds just to sit down. Will NOT be walking barefoot on this carpet. No fitted sheets. Gross worn out tub. Stains all over furniture carpet etc. Idk if this is a college party spot or what but very disappointing to walk into. Woman who checked us in was nice. Terrible parking. read more

You get what you pay for? This was the least expensive hotel and I decided to give it a shot. First, it's a motel. Second, it's old, musty, and third there are literally no amenities other than the basics (bed, bathroom, towels, linens, coffee, blow dryer, tv and shampoo/soap. Several things that made me realize I won't stay here again...outside of the fact that I haven't stayed in a motel since I was a poor college student. I woke up with a sore throat (with my allergies that usually indicates some kind of mold spores), I also had a very bad headache.. more than anything normal, no ice machine (even though I can drink tap water, I really like it cold), and the bed platform stuck out so I dinged my legs a couple of times. I think if you are looking for a deal, with a place to lay your head at night, a good location, don't mind a musty smell, bad air, and are ok with tap water to drink this will work for you. Oh and they had free parking which is a premium if you have a car here. While the location is really great, I'll be sure to spend the extra to stay in a hotel with amenities and good air. read more

My boyfriend and I stayed here overnight after a concert at the Greek Theater. I was pleasantly surprised at how clean the room felt and how spacious it was. It definitely looks better in person than the pictures online. We did not have any problems with the shower, sink, or TV compared to other reviews. The bed was a little sunken in and we could hear the staff cleaning upstairs, but the both of us were still able to get a good night's rest and wake up refreshed. If you're a light sleeper, bring your earplugs. Parking is limited (~11 to 13 spots) but free, so get there early if you can to reserve your spot for the rest of the day. This is a great no-frills inn to stay at and I would definitely stay here again. read more

Sooooo can you tell the name of a hotel in the bay area with 42'' flat screens in every room, queen size beds, and free parking???? Ya I didn't used to be able to either, until my bf and I stumbled upon this new fabulous find in Berkeley! The best part??? No, not the TV although that is pretty sweet!! LOCATION. This is basically right at Shattuck and Bancroft in Downtown Berkeley and you really cannot get much better than that, unless you spend three times as much at the Bancroft Hotel or Hotel Durant. The rooms have a funny warm, sauna like feeling when you first walk in, but you can just open the window for a bit and make everything normal again (you won't want to leave the window open for that long since it is across the street from Berkeley High and those kids are loud!!! ha) But those things aside, the bed is comfortable, the shower is good (the hot water could last a little longer), the TV is nice and with cable, and you get parking included with your room fee of just around $100 a night!! That is AMAZING for the bay area and I will definitely be staying here the next time I need a hotel room in Berkeley. Location and Price...Done and Done. read more

My boyfriend and I were desperate to find a room in Berkeley from Sunday night - Tuesday morning. We booked on line for $160 per night, which I thought was quite expensive but agreed to pay as they advertised that they have temperpedic beds as my back is terrible. After our long drive from LA we arrived at the hotel which looked a little like a motel 6 but with heavier doors and no windows facing into the main courtyard. On arrival we were told that the price is actually $180 per night but we were tired so agreed to pay it. We got our bags and up to the room we went. For some reason we were checked into the disabled access room?? The hotel seemed to be empty??? My first impression of the room was that it was trying to be expensive but honestly looked cheap. The wall paint was chipped, box of tissues by the bed.... Ohhh..., a coffee maker that looked like it had been timewarped from the 60s and didn't work, one small sink, horrible disabled bathroom (perfect romantic setting), the internet didn't work one face cloth between the two of us.. You get the picture.. But at least we get a comfy bed.. Or so I thought.... I carefully peeled the sheets back to check that they were clean and although they looked washed there was clearly blood stains on them. Gross. But I dare not go down and tell the grumpy lady to change them. And on better inspection discovered that the bed wasn't a temperpedic but a cheap memory foam knock off. After climbing into bed we were woken at 3am by street cleaners... It sounded like the end of the world was coming. I'm happy to be home and will not be staying there again. read more

I was pleasantly surprised at the room. Despite the location this place was actually pretty clean and comfortable. We were only about 1 mile from the Greek Amphitheatre so it was a decent walk to and from the show. This place is also pretty centrally located to downtown Berkley so you have access to a lot of bars and restaurants. The parking lot is ridiculously small though and if you can't find a spot in there good luck. Luckily we pulled in right when someone was leaving and there was no way we were going to leave until we were leaving for good. I am not sure where one would park if they can't find a spot in the tiny lot. There are literally maybe 10 spots. If you have a large vehicle...forget about it, you won't be able to get in or out of here. The girl at the front desk was very friendly and professional. She helped us out a lot and gave us directions and advice on how to navigate the area. read more

Location, location, location... and a 42" HD plasma TV in every room! Seriously, I happened across this hotel when desperately searching for a room in the Bay Area the same weekend as the Gift Show, North Beach Jazz Fest, and the SF Marathon. The prices were in line with what one would expect in the Bay Area ($119 King), so I booked it. The hotel is right off Shattuck, only a couple of blocks away from the BART station, which was perfect. I felt completely safe walking back from the station at midnight on Saturday. There is very limited parking for guests, so be prepared to park on the street or a couple of blocks away at a public lot. The hotel itself appears to have recently received a major face-lift. New carpet, bed (w/ a Tempur-pedic-like mattress), modern furnishings, air conditioning, fresh paint and the aforementioned HDTV were a welcomed site. The bathroom was also sparkling new. My only complaints? No in-room refrigerator and poor weatherstripping on the door. When the door was closed at night, you could see a thin beam of light all the way around it. You could hear traffic, but the corner it's located on isn't too busy, so the noise is more than bearable. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. If I'm looking to stay in the Bay Area again, this place would be at the top of my list. read more

My sister and I stayed here for three nights. The only good things about this place are the mattress and the location - those are the only reasons this place gets two stars and not one. First, the website severely misrepresents this place as an "inn." It's more like a motel than a hotel. The doors open out into a courtyard that's just a parking lot. There's no lobby, just a little booth in the front where there's never anyone there. You have to ring the bell for anyone to show up. And when they do show up, it's always with a big frown like you're bothering them. The rooms themselves are dingy. The paint is peeling, there was some sort of stain running down the wall where the air conditioner was hanging. It looks like it had been there for a long time. Very odd assortment of amenities - tall thin glasses instead of the usual glass tumblers, for example. The worst part was the ants. My sister noticed a couple roaming around the first evening. Then we were at the Ferry Building and my sister purchased a box of macaroons to give as a gift. We go back to the hotel, go to bed. Next morning, I look at the box sitting on the dresser and see a stray ant wandering around on it. To our horror, we open the box and it's infested. So I bring the box to the little booth and ring the bell. I show the lady at the desk the box. She gives me a confused look like it's strange that I would be upset about the presence of vermin in a room where I'm sleeping. "Well, we can have housekeeping spray the room..." When I checked out, the woman who I presume to be the owner and I had some words about the ants. Her reasoning is that our box of macaroons was what brought the ants. Because they could smell it from the street right? Like there were never any ants to begin with, but they followed us up the stairs? I replied, "If that's the case, then why isn't my apartment crawling with ants? You have a vermin problem." "It's different, food is sealed in a home." Really? As if every single food item in everyone's home is sealed so that no ants would ever show up. Just flabbergasted by the deliberate ignorance. All I could say is that they really need to hire an exterminator. read more

However my friend thought there had been a murder in our bathroom- then she realized it was really bad rust. Eww.. The front desk person had a bit of an attitude when we asked for an extra pillow. "Umm, well I don't know if we have any extra pillows." "Well, we've got 3 girls sharing 2 beds. We need them." "Well, I guess I can look, but I can't guarantee anything." WTF?! Are you serious?! She shows up with the extra pillows, and notices our window was open (which we didn't know was open because our drapes were closed). "Umm you're window is open. It's not supposed to be open." "Oh, sorry, we didn't even know it was open." "Umm yeah." She turns and walks away. Really, are you frakkin' kidding me? So yeah, Downtown Berkeley Inn, your customer service BLOWS. read more

We love staying here. It is close to everything we want to do and see. The rooms are clean. Not to say we haven't had problems once in awhile with the AC in on of the rooms we stayed in, but for the most part, we enjoy staying a few nights here. Only complaint is the price hike during the necessary times of year when you need to be there for your Cal Student. Should be a break for the parents of a Cal Student. read more

This has a sort of college dorm motel sort of feel, but that wasn't a bad thing really. It was modern and clean. Our room was much better decorated than any other hotel in the same price range. Bed was comfy, tv was huge, service was friendly. Parking lot is very small and will not accommodate everyone in the hotel if they're full but usually street parking isn't hard to find if you arrive home later in the evening. For the price, this hotel was absolutely great. 2 nights plus tax was $199. I've heard from locals it's the best inexpensive place to stay in town. 5 stars for the price, availability (rooms still available when all the other places sold out), location (2-3 blocks from the BART), modern plumbing (full size sink), and the bed. 3 stars for everything else. This place is, hands down, the most convenient and reasonably priced place around downtown Berkeley. I also love the mostly modern plumbing. With that said, there are a few odd things about this place. The room I was in was sparsely furnished with what looked like second-hand high-end furniture. There was a super narrow modern-looking-but-not-at-all-functional desk with an Aeron knock-off that had a huge tear in it. There was also a dresser and a nightstand. That's it! No table or chairs, or a luggage rack on which I can unpack! My husband had to put all of his stuff on the floor (I took the top of the small dresser; the drawers were really difficult to open so storing my stuff inside didn't seem feasible). There was a 40-ish inch flat screen TV on the wall and a freaking Tempur-Pedic mattress! Absolutely loved the bed! BUT, the clock on the nightstand didn't work, the lotion by the sink was half empty (used) when we arrived (and wasn't replaced until after 3 days), the newly painted room (it still faintly smelled of paint) already had dents and chips in the wall, there were holes in the carpet (cigarette burns?), patches of rust on the bathroom door frame and along the seam between the tub and the wall, and the water pressure was dismal (the room was on the second floor). Bottom line, the place has a weird mix of great features and odd flaws, but it's a good value simply based on location! read more

Price was right: We needed a place to stay. I was checking out grad school at the last minute, and I just wanted somewhere that I could go and get some rest and then get up and get a feel for the area and scout for a new home. Ended up sleeping. so. well. I'm seriously mattress shopping right now because their beds were so comfortable that I'm absolutely ruined and didn't sleep a wink on my mattress at home. I woke up for the first time in a year without a bit of back pain, the curtains shield you from the light so well, and I slept like a rock for the two nights I was here. The staff/family running the place was nice. I think we dealt with the daughter most of our stay, and she was accommodating and helped us with the parking situation, as there is not a ton of spots to park, however we never had trouble making it work out or finding a spot to slip into. This was a pretty good hotel and deal. A single room with a Temprapedic Mattress bed for $80.00 dollars on a Saturday night. Cool room, gives you all the regular stuff: toiletrees, TV/cable, etc. Kinda loud since it's right next to the street. We were on the 3rd floor and could still hear traffic and people pretty good. Free parking. Near all the downtown stuff and right near the campus. read more

I would highly recommend this hotel. Great location in Berkeley. Clean and stylish. Very comfortable beds. Big tv. Very good price. People had commented on yelp about the noise level. We were in the very back, but didn't hear any street/city noise in our room. We did have an issue with the battery running out in the smoke detector, but the staff was very friendly and came to our room to take it down after 11pm, when the new battery they put in earlier in the day failed as well. No frills other than a coffee maker so be prepared with a small cooler for incidentals . Ice available onsite. Great restaurants just footsteps away. We stayed here a few weeks ago after a concert at the Greek Theatre. It was about a 20 minute walk uphill through the university which was great since we didn't have to worry about driving home at the end of the night. The room was just over $100 and we managed to get a parking spot in the small parking lot in their courtyard. We had a corner room on the main floor. The room was clean but the bathroom needed a deep clean. It looked like it just been lightly cleaned. There were still bits of dirt in the corners and water stains on the ceiling. It was still cleaner than my bathroom at home. The ladies I spoke with over the phone and in person were very pleasant. I'd stay here again. read more

Great location: super-convenient to BART, the buses on Shattuck and University, and I-80. Tons of places to eat within a short walk. UC Berkeley. Farmer's Market. Shopping. And so on... It IS across from the high school, so it can be noisy. The convenience of the location is worth it for me. The furnishings are on the Spartan side, but the bed is comfortable and the off-street parking free. At around a hundred bucks a night, by far the best value in downtown Berkeley. read more

August '14 We stayed for 2 nights (~ $130/night) to show my parents my alma mater (UC Berkeley). This was the second time we stayed here. One thing we loved the most about this hotel is the location. It's very close to the bart entrance, bus stop, north east side of Berkeley campus (mostly life science area), and variety of great food. Room was clean and bed was very comfortable. We did not have problem finding parking at this property. Although, I saw that the parking lot was full at the end of the day. WiFi was decent..... though it may be a little bit slow for playing online game. Bathroom was clean, and we had no problem adjusting the water temperature. One minor inconvenience we had was that the trash can was too small. Overall, it was a nice stay, and we would love to stay at this hotel again whenever we visit Cal. =D read more

I was told we could ask for extra pillows and blankets but when I called the front desk, the receptionist was very rude and impatient and hung up on me before I was done asking. Came into Berkeley for business and wanted to be downtown so I could experience the city. This was a perfect location for me; walking distance to downtown and all the food, drinks, etc. So if you are looking for a place to stay that puts you in the heart of the city, this is it. The room was comfortable. Nothing special. Spacious and clean enough. There was a large television but they have little selection as far as stations. The water pressure is pretty bad so if you like a strong shower, you won't get it here. My 2 biggest pet peeves. Their Wi-Fi DOES NOT work. I came in for business and needed wifi for many reasons. They say they have wifi. They even give you a password for it when you check in and then they pretend it does not work... "Oh, I'm not sure why it's not working.. I'll restart the router.. come down to the office and let's check the error you're receiving...etc." Oh, shut up. You know it doesn't work and you are telling people it does. Get it fixed knuckleheads. The other peeve is that there was about a 1/2 inch gap between my door and the floor and this is a motel style place with the doors going straight outside from the room. Gross. They redeemed themselves slightly by making sure I had a taxi cab waiting to take me to a meeting. That was really cool and I was thankful. read more

The Downtown Berkeley Inn is in a great location, just blocks from the nearest BART station, tons of restaurants, and the UC Berkeley campus. I stayed here over a weekend so I could attend a concert at the Greek Theater. I rode BART to the Inn from the Oakland airport, and then managed to walk everywhere I needed to for the entire weekend. I was greeted warmly and found the check-in process quick and easy. I was given a map of the area, which I found very helpful. I slept really well every night. You can see the rooms are worn and could use updating. I imagine updating the rooms would cost a bundle and result in much higher room rates. When travel planning for this trip I compared the Inn's rates with rates on Berkeley Airbnb options. I found the Downtown Berkeley Inn was less expensive and was in a better location for my needs. I plan to stay here again should I return to Berkeley in the future. read more

Another successful, comfortable stay at the Dowtown Berkeley Inn. Got the normal friendly service from this family owned boutique hotel. Asked management about the one negative review and found it unfortunate that the patron felt the need to disparage the business all because they had more people staying in their room than allotted which was discussed at time of check in. Another spoiled brat trying to do harm using social sites by making nothing but false claims. As usual my room was clean which is why I and my business associates stay here while in the area. read more

Stained carpet, dirty room, hair on the toilet seat, mold on the wall. Give this place a PASS! Apparently they have wifi, but I wasn't given the password (and no one was EVER at the front desk.) The TV in my room was nice and huge, but didn't work. I wouldn't stay here again, nor would I recommend it. For the same price you can stay somewhere much nicer, and closer to campus. The only good thing I can say about this dump is that parking is free. And yeah... the carpet it my room was even worse than these pictures! read more

We stayed for Homecoming/Parent's weekend at Cal. It's a small hotel on the west end of campus. The rooms are clean, beds are comfortable. Nothing special but I gave it 4 stars because of the locale and the price. Parking is very limited, and you aren't guaranteed a spot, so come early if it is a busy weekend. It's also different in that you reserve on line, and there isn't someone answering the phones 24/7. We will definitely go back. read more

A good bargain for when visiting UC Berkeley campus. The rooms were clean, but nothing fancy. The beds were a little uncomfortable because they do not have boxsprings, but are platform beds. A major perk was that they allowed us to leave our car for some hours after we checked out. A short walk to campus and campus eateries. Hard to get hot water in the shower. my wife and I stayed at this motel over Father's Day weekend. the hotel looked pretty good inside and out. We've never slept on a Platform bed before and found the mattress comfortable but the frame (platform) of the bed extends about 6" all around the mattress which for me made it somewhat difficult to get out of the bed. I suppose that if I used a platform bed often I might be able to get used to it. there was a TV with two remote controls one to turn on the T V and one to change the channels. there was no written channel guide in the room. There was a control that I figured out was for the air conditioner. it had some sort of wall holder on it and when I removed the holder from the remote control, I discovered that I could adjust the fan motor but unfortunately there were no instructions and I was unable to operate the A/C properly. There was a small problem at the sink. After running the water for 5 minutes (there was a low flow device on the faucet) no hot water ver came out. I then checked the hot water at th tub and there was hot water almost immediately. There was another problem with the faucet at the sink, it was loose. the room had a small coffee maker and there was only one serving of coffee! it was ok because I brought my own Kurig. there was only one chair, an office type of chair.......... read more

I travel. A lot! Well, more than most. And my travels are California only! Yes, very specific. I am a travel writer and I know a good thing or two. and Downtown Berkeley Inn is definitely a four in my book. First: It is in Berkeley. Second: It's incredibly reasonable. Third: It's conveniently located in downtown Berkeley near everything including great dining, great entertainment, BART, UC Berkeley, and whatever else your heart desires while touring around Berkeley. Four: FREE parking, comfortable beds, friendly staff, no fuss, no muss. I have stayed in a number of Berkeley hotels. They have all been great! And I will add Downtown Berkeley Inn to that list and my list of places to stay again. No, they don't serve breakfast, but there are plenty of incredible places within an easy walk. Again, the price is very reasonable so you can go splurge on a fabulous breakfast...and, in fact, I did. I headed to Venus up on Shattuck. Recommended by the DBI owner. It was the right suggestion. My wife and I stayed here for one night in January 2017. The room was spacious, clean, and quiet. The bed was different than most hotels, but not a problem: perhaps because of the bed or the quietness or ?? this was the first time, ever, that I have slept well my first night away from home in a hotel. The person checking us in was amiable and professional. The person checking us out was good, too. There was off street parking in an interior courtyard that kept our car safe. We have stayed at this Inn on a regular basis for the past four years, while our son was a student at Cal. You will not find a better value or a better experience! The owner is friendly and welcoming, the location is great - within walking distance from campus, parking is free (which is a real bonus in the area) and the rooms are equipped with everything you need for comfortable stay.
