Beautiful cafe garden. Surprisingly came on an open mic for Austin's Local artists which is located outside. Seems you can have bonfires here while your kid is on the playground. Never been to a cafe that is this Kid-friendly. This is like any other counter cafe, but the bar is located to the left back corner from the opening. Mark my words - this is the best coffee shop for getting work done in South Austin! The inside feels very homey, and they have lots of indoor, outdoor, and counter seating with lots of outlets. A lot of people wfh here, and it can be hard to find a table with outlets during peak times. Let me start with saying I'm not a big coffee person...but I am big on good vibes, convenience, and not trying too hard to be "the place". The Hive is "the place" without trying - I've been 3 times in the past week, and I simply love it here. With a little something for anyone (coffee, matcha, breakfast tacos, beer, WiFi, a quiet space, AND a big yard out back), the Hive is an unassuming little oasis. Prices are great, they were open even several other little breakfast places were not down in South Austin over the holiday season, and it's easy to spend 5 minutes or 2 hours here. I didn't eat here but my four year old and I played for a couple hours! We played in the play house, went down the slide and especially enjoyed the butterfly garden! This is a very cozy spot indeed, great to get a drink (containing alcohol, or not!). I came in the evening to hang with a friend and it was a very cute, casual, and not overly busy cafe. The porch area is cute when you walk inside and the interior is bright and cozy but with an open bar area for cafe type drinks ( coffee, tea, pastries etc.) and they have an easy to order QR scan where you can order these types of drinks, or also beer/wine. When I came I had a beer with my friend and we were able to stay until 9:30ish. They didn't have a lot of "food-food" but they had a few menu options for cafe-type food items (but it's not a sit down restaurant or anything). I've been to The Hive at least a half dozen times and keep coming back. They've been voted Best Coffee in Austin (!) but have much more to offer including great breakfast tacos, game nights, a full bar, and a backyard for the kiddos. Ok, so I realize this is a low review as that's the true reflection of my experience BUT I see lots of potential in The Hive and will give it another shot on a less busy day. In terms of bringing my kid (18 months), I think it would have been more enjoyable with another adult since doors/space/ground was difficult to navigate or with an older kid who doesn't need a stroller for containment purposes. I went in with my 18-month-old on Labor Day in the hope that I might be able to actually drink a whole cup of coffee since they have an outdoor play space. Alas, I got barely a few sips before leaving. PARKING Parking was not great. While there was lots of space, it was difficult to maneuver and it was on one of those dusty, rocky lots that doesn't vibe well with a small stroller. VIBE & WAIT When we got in, I was excited to see all the spaces! Lots of different areas that had different vibes - both indoors and outdoors - and that could be really fun. There were 3 parties (7 people) in Iine ahead of us but it took about 15 minutes to get through the line which felt a bit long just for the ordering side of things. Maybe there was a particularly picky customer at the front or something but it was not fun since the door kept slamming loudly every 30 seconds with folks coming in and out. Then, it took another solid 15 minutes for the drink to come out. As an adult, it's inconvenient. As an adult with a toddler who is excited to go outside and play, 30 minutes of waiting around is rough. FOOD & COFFEE I ordered an iced butter pecan latte, half sweet, with overnight oats and strawberry-cheese danish. == The overnight oats itself was tasty but half of it was just granola on top which is not really what I was wanting/expecting. == The strawberry-cheese danish was not good and I ended up throwing it away. It definitely tasted not fresh - the 'corners' were hard and cold. The weird thing about it was it was the pastry itself had a cheesy taste - not like the sweet cream cheese you're expecting in this type of pastry, but like cheddar. I don't think the pastry was the problem; I think it was stored with/next/cooked with something that had cheddar on it. == The latte was fine. Nothing to write home about but I'd get it again. OUTDOOR SPACE After our 30-minute shenanigans, we headed outside to play. I looked around for a ramp entrance/exit to the outdoor space but didn't see one (it exists! I just didn't see it). So, I'm trying to hold the door open with one hand, my toddler's hand in the other, and move the stroller (with coffee in the cupholder) over the step. Yes, you counted three hands, which is what it felt like I needed to successfully navigate. After we managed to get down the step without falling, we rolled over to the playground, the stroller bouncing along the way with splashes of coffee flying all over. The outdoor space was super cute and the play space was impressive. There were seats around and in the play space for parents which was lovely/helpful. Unfortunately, all the seats in the shade were taken so I commenced baking in the Texas summer heat. Overall, the play space FAR exceeded my expectations for something that would be at a coffee house! There were a couple things that gave my pause like the rusty metal piping coming out from under one of the benches which is obviously hazardous but, ya know, kids can make anything hazardous so what's a metal pipe at the end of the day? EXHALE Alas, I did get to enjoy a few sips of coffee more leisurely than at most coffee shops as my little one played with a push toy and waved hello to other little kids. I got a few peaceful exhales which can be hard to come by as a parent. We didn't stay long, however, as the heat was blazing at this point. So, we jostled the stroller back through the outdoor space (again, coffee splashing all about), found the ramp (yay!) but still needed assistance since it was a heavy door, and again jostled through the parking lot and headed home. read more

The Hive has a great space, for adults and kids. The space it's self is very kid friendly out back. They have many tables, covered with umbrellas, turf over almost the whole area outside which is amazing. They have a play place, slides and mini play houses. Everything is gated so you can sit and watch without worry. The reason for the 3 star is the food/coffee. We ordered bougie doughnuts - they were very dry cake doughnuts. The muffins and cherry/cheese pastry was very good. We ordered a cold brew that was bitter but all in all a standard cold brew, an iced chai which was like drinking sugar and a mango smoothie that was a hit for the kids, but also a sugar bomb. I want to love this place and plan to give it another try - it's so convenient to get work while my son is in class down the road. I headed in and ordered an iced tea, then looked for a comfy spot to sit for the next hour to work. Tried logging in to their wifi, only to be told there was something wrong with the internet connection. Went to ask the young lady at the counter if she knew anything about the wifi being down or if there was supposed to be a pop up I needed to see when trying to log in, only to be met with "I don't know." Gathered my things and left. So much for working while the kiddo is in class tonight. Hopefully I can try again soon and all works well. Hive is my favorite coffee shop in Austin! I always get their mocha, and it's delicious every time. They do change out their pastries pretty often, but I loved when they had their triple berry cake. I got it every time I came. The cafe is so beautiful as well. There are so many cute areas for photos, and I love spending time here working on my laptop. To make things better, if you come after 5 p.m they also open up their bar area. I have a toddler who can't be tamed, if you can relate then this is your happy place (and your kids too). The backyard is fenced with tons of outdoor toys, picnic tables, swings, and some vegan food too. We recently moved here from NYC and my son needs a place to be free and get dirty where I'm not saying no. He left filthy and slept like a dream. We'll be back for sure. I went to The Hive to Remote work. Parking was easy, there were plenty of available seats and outlets. I ordered an iced coffee, which took a little time, but wasn't excessive. The deduction in rating is honestly based on the flies. I was surprised I didn't see anyone mention them. I had a conversation with a friend after my visit and that was one of the first things they mentioned as well. I stayed maybe an hour, but it was too much for me to focus and feel comfortable.
