This is a great spot to hang out and read a book or catch up on work. They have a large selection of lattes, tea and beer and the baked goods are always delicious. The staff is very welcoming and professional. They have a big outdoor area where they often have karaoke and live music. Update: I returned to the Hive this morning to try the iced chai latte and re-attempt the taco. Success! The chai is absolutely delicious! It has a unique flavor that I can't quit figure out but is simply wonderful! The taco was much better today as well. It was warm and tasted fresh. Actual coffee probably 4/5 stars, but honestly everything else about this place is why it became a regular spot. This inside is homey but HUGE with plenty of seating options and lots of outlets. Wifi is fast and reliable and reaches the outdoor seating as well. I would recommend checking their events page before you plan an evening study session here though, because sometimes they close the back or the entire place for events in the evening hours. read more

I'm only giving three stars because the whole reason we went was so I could bring my daughter to watch a musician play kids music and it didn't even happen. Tried this place after driving past it everyday for the past 4 yrs. Tried it due to a friend suggesting it. We took our kids, 1 yoa and 4 yoa. The ambiance is great but noticed a long line and only one person behind the counter. We ordered, they said they'd call out names when our drinks and food were ready. We located a spot in the back but within eye view of the pick up area. After about 20 min. we both began questioning if we had missed our names. My friend went first, and signaled to me that they hadn't called our names, then came back and asked what I ordered to drink. I ordered a 12 oz hot latte and a smoothie. She goes back up, and after about 4 min. comes back with my latte. My friend says I'd have to talk to the guy behind the counter for my food, she doesn't know what's going on back there. So I go up, and after about 3-4 people in front of me talk to this same guy, he ask me my food order. I tell him. I wait for my food. During all this waiting, I see him getting orders ready by each person approaching the pick up area. I also notice he and the other lady (the one taking orders) are heating up food with a microwave. Ewwweee The guy puts my food that he warmed up in the microwave in a basket and hands it to me. I'm totally not fine with this but he seems to be the only one who's picking up the slack around there and I'm sure it's not his fault! The taco was bland and appeared to have been pre-made (no telling how long it had been sitting out as we got to the place at 9am. My breakfast sandwich was also warmed up via microwave. It was also the wrong sandwich. I ate it bc I was hungry and (pregnant), and I didn't feel like waiting again for a warmed up sandwich. I asked for a fork and a lady behind the counter said they were right there (pointing to a place where the plastic ware is. I told her there were no more, she said well they should be there. I told her I wouldn't be asking her for a fork if there was any in the spot. She gave me a blank stare. DISAPPOINTED all the way around!!! Hyped up place for a lacking establishment. I mean it you just want coffee and to work/study, I guess you would like this place. I wouldn't recommend it. $25 later, I left unsatisfied and still hungry. read more

I was so excited to try this place because I love the premise/idea and the community events The Hive posts about, but was pretty disappointed in the actual facilities. Maybe I came on an off day? It was wet and muddy outside so we didn't stay long playing outside with my toddler. The outdoor play area would be fun if it wasn't wet and muddy, but really just for young toddlers. There are only plastic slides / mini play scapes etc so big kids likely wouldn't enjoy it. I figured there might be a playroom indoors but turns out there isn't except for paid childcare, so i put my 22mo in there for an hour, which was very reasonable at $10/hr. The childcarer was very nice, but it was only one woman in charge of 4 kids under 22mo. However what I really didn't find acceptable was that the TV was on in the childcare area. I haven't seen that in any other short term childcare place and many parents work really hard to avoid or limit screen time. That was disappointing to me. Other things I noticed were that there was only one bathroom with a changing table, which isn't particularly helpful for a kid friendly establishment. Additionally the custom built changing table was partially coming off the wall (I informed management and an out of order sign was quickly put up, so that's good). It would seem prudent to me to put up a safety tested standard Koala changing station in a public place. I got a latte and a sandwich, which came out quickly! The latte was good, the sandwich was decent. Oddly enough there wasn't anywhere to get water except the bathroom sink (or you could buy bottled). A beverage dispenser would have been appreciated. The location is pretty Southeast but would be convenient for those near Shady Hollow. I need to give this place another chance for an event or checking out the Adamo nail truck, but I cannot say that just grabbing a coffee and some food here is worth the trip, for me. read more

We booked The Hive for my son's first birthday fiesta. It was the perfect venue! We had a good mix of families with young kids, older family members, and couples without kiddos. The little ones loved the playroom, bounce house, and outdoor toys, the older folks loved the iced coffee, and everyone else was happy with beer, wine, and perfect weather. We had about 70 people attend the party and while the indoor space got a little cramped when we jammed everyone in the main room to sing happy birthday, the rest of the time the space was perfect. Communication with the venue and their planning specialist was seamless, as was setup and tear down. We received so many compliments on the unique, fun venue, and several friends asked for more details for their next birthday party. We can't wait to go back to enjoy The Hive during open play hours! read more

This place saved me for the first year after my baby was born. It was here I spent most of my days, trying to figure out a BabyLife/Work balance. The Hive was the most affordable and "easy" solution, because I didn't really want to be away from him. I was able to come here for 4 hours a day a few times a week, Mo got his first dose of "daycare" and I got to hover over him in the next room and watch him through the glass as much as I needed to. And I got lots of work done! I was also breastfeeding and this place was a comfy respite from your normal cafes where this sort of activity may be frowned upon (not that I care!). I enjoyed the snacks and coffee, and most recently I've gone back a few times for the amazing food trucks, especially the thai food! This place quickly became a home away from home for me for that critical year. Sadly I haven't been back recently but as I write this I need to go and see Sheila, the wonderful owner who took me and Mo in, basically as family, and helped us through this critical time. I recommend this place to everyone. It's a place for families, friends, people needing a remote office and everything in between. So first the good - the space is nice - nice couches, places to sit study or read and a lot of outdoor space for people to hang out and kids to play. I have had a couple of bad experiences with the food and coffee. The coffee is ok - a little watery in my opinion but it's the food that is disappointing. I ordered an egg and bacon sandwich the other day and it took about 10 minutes and when I got it was clear that it had been put in the microwave and so the bacon was soft and soggy and so was the muffin. I like the Hive's space, I just wish that they quality of the food/drinks was higher as this makes me hesitate to go back. read more

Several friends have suggested this place for hanging out with kids. I finally made it out, and was underwhelmed. The latte was not hot, half the cup was foam. The outdoor space is much less organized and kept up than the pictures show. I found it difficult to keep track of my kids, and lots of wandering crying kid experiences while there... I think sometimes parents just check out, and it's easy for a little one to lose a parent. That said, it reminds me of the old South Austin, and if you've been here longer than a decade, you know Austin used to have a grunge vibe... coffee shops that weren't pristine and perfectly cleansed, places you just hang out and kick up your feet. There was a nice breeze that came through at one point, and I appreciated the garden beds! I don't think I'll join in on any other mom hangouts here, too stressful with kids, and felt like there was too much going on to relax for me. Took a star off because the coffee was just really bad. Me and my wife took our 9mo old to check out this place. And we couldn't be happier than what we experienced. They took care our 9mo so well. It was her first daycare experience, she did cried a lot. But the ladies seems to know what to do and how to calm her down. We are going to be visiting more often, so that our baby will get used to this more!! This place is a saving grace. With my fluctuations in childcare needs, I can pop in here for a conference call while my daughter plays and have that coffee that gets me through the afternoon. While the convenience is paramount, the ladies in the childcare room are the star here. I've been to the hive maybe a dozen times, and this last time was on a particularly stressful day for me. Crazy day at work, doctors appt in the morning, no one to watch our LO, so I came here. Mid conference call, I peek in the window to check on my daughter, like I always do, and the lady in there with the kids is sitting on a bean bag, my daughter sprawled out asleep on her, her free arm attending to the other little boy. The lady (I wish I caught her name) was amazing. I needed an hour to get some work done, and they helped me get there. Coffee is delish too!! read more

Cute little spot that just screams "Austin". I've lived in South Austin my whole life and had no idea this little gem existed till now. I love the vibe! There is plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors. There's even a makeshift playground area going on in the back and I am totally here for it. The reason why I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because my iced vanilla almond latte was subpar. Too heavy on the milk and sugar for my taste. I've had better lattes elsewhere. I'm changing my review. I was looking at this company through tired, coffee-less eyes on the morning where they had dropped the ball. I gave them one star, and I left a pretty evil review. The truth is that they got in touch very quickly, and when I went by they were super nice to me. The coffee was also really good so now I feel evil.
