My husband has been wanting to come here for a while after passing by, after a disappointing St. Patrick's attempt in Augusta, we pulled into the Highlander and to our surprise, it was trivia night !! Tip: Be careful there is a double yellow line to enter the parking lot. This is a great local hangout for people from North Augusta. You will run into make locals visiting this watering hole. On some nights There is a game room in the door way left of the bar. There is also ONE pool table left of the bar. On Thursday night there is karaoke and great vibe with everyone chatty. Came here as part of a pub run, and was thrilled to see that they had Summer Shandy on top - made me feel like I was somewhat home in Wisconsin :) The bar is in the basement of a building near the river, and has a dark and intimate pub feel to it. There is plenty of seating at the bar or at tables throughout the space. Service was pretty efficient for a barrage of runners entering without much notice. Bartender was super friendly and got all of us taken care of. Selection is nothing crazy to write home about, but a nice, casual place to grab a beer. This place has an employee named Lauren, who really needs to be fired!! She's got medium, long black hair. She should not be working there or anywhere for that matter. She threatened a close someone of mine with a bar stool/chair when they were doing nothing but what they went there for. I've worked in the food industry/hospitality service, and whatever it is that expects you to stay later than your actual off time. Why? Because you always have your side work, your nightly or daily counts of items, making sure you are ready for the next shift, whatever the reason may be. So, to yell at complete strangers that are doing nothing to you, calling us basically kidnappers, and threatening to throw a heavy enough object to a person bc you're upset about whatever, really shows your mental state is not on point. I was in town and was looking for a good gastropub. The place is below street level. The bar was filled with regulars. The people were friendly. Bartender didn't pay much attention to me compared to the regulars. Food was limited to a shepards pie (no menu - that's what the bartender said) which was good. Prices are excellent. My boyfriend and I were looking for a cool bar on Friday night and searched for a Pub-style venue. We decided to give this place a try, even though it was about a 20 minute drive out of the way. As soon as we arrived, there was a group of people standing outside smoking. We continued through the cloud of secondhand smoke, and as we opened the front door, we saw a pile of vomit on the threshold. We turned around right then and there and got back on the highway. I am from out of town and came to this bar with some friends because they raved about it. The bar definitely looks run down but had lots of things to do like pool, foosball, darts and an assortment of boardgames. There were only about 7 people in the bar when we entered. While I was there we were waiting on our friend to get a round of drinks but he took forever to come back. We waited about 15-20 mins before we checked up on him and found out that him and another customer were looking for the bartender who apparently left the bar to go and talk on the phone in the back. The reason I wouldn't recommend this bar is because of how the bartender acted when she got back to the bar. She was very rude and unprofessional when confronted about her customer service. She kept arguing with the customers stating that she didn't do anything wrong and that they could've waited on her. Then she proceeded to ask a guy at the bar who supposedly works there to escort the customers out. Then the guy started to curse at the customers after escorting them out. I'd read a few of the other reviews and I saw a trend of people saying the service was awful if you weren't a regular, I don't know how true this is but after my one experience I can say I definitely agree. After witnessing how horribly this situation was handled I would never recommend this bar to anyone. The situation was poorly handled and the workers at the bar made other customers feel uncomfortable. (Also the women's restroom stalls are sooooo small that your knees touch the stall door when sitting inside the stall.) read more

The staff didn't inform us. Instead we ordered the shepherd's pie and got one. Yeah. One with a burnt cheese topping. The insides were fine if you like peppered peppery pepper filling. I don't. This was like an episode of Cheers where nobody knows your name and the staff doesn't want your tips. Fortunately I had cash so I handed exact change and walked out. Fantastic neighborhood bar done in the tradition of an authentic British public house. Which makes sense as the owner moved from the UK and bought the bar in the 70's. Dark inside, with a definite air of character. Bartender's are quite laid back and super friendly. Proprietors always carry an interesting mix of around 12 different beers on tap, usually microbrews, and of course a wide selection of widget cans and bottles of offerings from the United Kingdom. Pub food is also a favorite here. English sausage, scotch eggs (if you've never had one, you're missing out), the highly seasonal pork pie...and of course the ubiquitous shepherd's pie. All very delicious. No smoking inside the pub per North Augusta regulations, but a mini-biergarten outside the front door works just fine. Internet connected juke box means you can hear whatever you'd like. A pool table and dart boards (the local league plays here regularly). Thursdays are home to Butt Naked Trivia (don't worry, people are clothed...mostly) are filled with thinking man's questions on 80's flicks, obscure bands and politics. Winner gets free beer. My friends love this place. I end up here with them on occasions. The service is abysmal. They never have necessary mixers. I would never again order any food. Attracted by British and yelp drive across river to find wine shop on ground floor and dingy bar downstairs "under new ownership" 6pm Wednesday so locals in but not a place to go to in my view. Lots of choice on broad street back across the river. British pub but no English beer? Never asked about food but no one seemed to be eating. No menus or specials. Perhaps livens up with all the dart boards after dark. There was seats outside where you could wait to go in or I assume smoke. No one there at the time I visited. Also Guinness was slightly bitter.
