We walked here form the grasshopper which was only a few blocks down. The area can be a bit seedy but not too bad. The bar itself was pretty packed, more than we anticipated so know that this local dive gets pretty social. It's def not quiet it was a rocker vibe that night. Plenty of people playing pool and large groups of people hanging. It felt super local but also a scene of sorts. I didn't try food so I can't comment on that. All in all great place if you're in the mood to be around a lot of people drinking heavy hahha!! Good times

First time here! Its like this awesome dive bar but with amazing cocktails! Very clean, perfect vibe on a Saturday! Malcolm was our bartender and he was on point with her recommendations and service was top notch ! Makes you feel at home!

Well things certainly change! Though not in terms of the quality or the vibe of the place, just in terms of happy hours, mainly. I just re-read my previous review and noticed, not only did I mention the happy hour here didn't include their specialty cocktails, which now that they finally reopened for on-premise drinking a few weeks ago, it absolutely currently does (yay!)... but I also mentioned The Harbor, a bar that used to be good (zero of the great bartenders from when it used to be good are still there, and they slashed their happy hour, too!) So I no longer have *any* complaints about this bar (other than that it's a little far of a walk from me, and in a *slightly* sketchy part of town at night. Though neither of those things are going to stop me from coming here all the time anyway.) I'd been supporting them with the occasional takeout cocktail through covid, but I was extremely happy when they reopened, both for them, and cause it's nicer buying *one* cocktail at a time (and it's just so great being able to sit at the bar again!) I still slightly prefer the similar-but-slightly-quieter vibe at Darlings (same owners, not *currently* reopened since covid shut things down), but the vibe here is great too. What I said in 2019 is still true, it's absolutely trying to be a bit of everything for everyone - it *feels* like a dive bar, but it's clean, the bar area's nice, and they've got great cocktails and some great spirits! At normal price, everything's pretty reasonably priced. For happy hour, I believe until 7 (which they *are* still doing as far as I know), certain classic cocktails are pretty cheap (I got a solid $8 watermelon margarita last time), basic wells and some basic beers are *super* cheap if that's what you're looking for, and all their fancier cocktails (what *I'm* there for!) are now $2 off. All the cocktails I've tried from them, both pre-covid, through covid with their takeout program, and when I was back a few weeks ago to celebrate their reopening, have been great. The cocktail menu here is always fun and always changing, but the off-menu cocktails I've had here (when they aren't as busy) have been great too. All their bartenders, at least as far as I've met so far, have been great, the sort you could trust with wacky requests, haha. The other parts of my previous review are still pretty accurate - it's the sort of place where the vibe changes completely from calm in the afternoon to busy later, and that they have a handful of craft beers at pretty reasonable prices, and a few token wines, but it's mainly a bar where you either go to drink cheap boring beer (:p), or great cocktails. p.s. it also took me way too long to discover, there's a great taco stand in the parking lot across the street, that sells great al pastor tacos, which, since The Hawk doesn't have its own kitchen, you can and absolutely should get some of and take them back here to have with a mezcal cocktail! One of my favorite new combos! (And possibly what I've just decided I'm going to go back and do again tonight, haha.)

The friendliness of the staff is above any that I have ever came across. From the doorman to the bartenders and the owners. It's like walking into cheer's where everyone knows you're name and if they didn't, they will by the time you leave. Every week is a nother DJ spinning records from hip-hop to dark goth to heavy metal and on to Latino music. But let's not forget about the very humorous and comical Shit Show Bingo twice a month and go figure it's Free to play. Just like every Monday is Free pool and there's two tables to choose from. Plus once a month for those who like a live jazz band they have them as well. It's a great place where you are safe due to the doorman who doesn't miss a thing and the exceptional drinks that you won't find anywhere else. Go give it a try and trust me. You'll be back again and again and get this. They are pet friendly and your even allowed to bring dinner in.

They nailed it once again. The liquid Thanksgiving was so fun and utterly amazing we had to do the 12 Drunks of Christmas too! We knew it was going to be magical when Santa delivered our box of cocktails to our car. But it didn't stop there. The attention to detail with all the instructions and garnishes were once again impeccable. Everything has blown us away and exceeded all expectations. I can't wait to see what's up their sleeve next and regret only discovering this bar during the pandemic. I hope to celebrate there when this is all over! Bravo!!

I reread the description. I was mistaken. BF and I thought we were going to a chill cocktail bar. It was loud. We couldn't hear eachother in there. They had a dj. We arrived at round 9:30p on a Saturday. I got dirty laundry and bf got the margarita. Bomb drinks and great price! We'll be coming back. We were celebrating our anniversary. So this spot wasn't the vibe for tonight. But for sure for another night out. Check them out!!!

The Hawk had to really adapt to COVID times and I think they have adapted well by offering to-go cocktail options and pizza from 4th Horseman. Ordering online was easy for Friday (4-6PM) or Saturday pick up, however you have to order before 10AM Saturday to pick up between 12-4PM. Pick up was also easy! You can see their weekly offerings on their Instagram. The options we picked up at the time included: Midori Sour, Fresh Mango Margarita, and Cactus Rose. I only tried midori sour and cactus rose, both were delicious! Midori sour was frozen and put in two to go bags, just like an adult caprisun. Cactus rose came in a glass jar with a cute label, which was perfect to pour out into your own cups. My friends loved the mango margarita! Be sure to pour over ice because they are flavorful if ya know what I mean. Highly recommend for delicious to-go cocktails. Will be back to support my local bar and especially when they are able to safely reopen!

When my friends Steph H. and Norman T. recommend a bar, you listen. When they invite you to a happy hour where their friend is spinning yacht rock, you must go. That was the situation that my wife and I were in a couple of weeks ago. We found a space in The Hawk's small parking lot, which I took as a good omen. They had the Dodgers on the TV's, playing my Phillies, no less. Early Sunday afternoons are for day drinking specials, and I settled on a Bloody Mary. Tastefully prepared without a lot of extraneous nonsense, and they are even vegan! I didn't ask, but I may have gotten a full day's supply of Vitamin C (I did have more than one). The bloodys and the tunes (courtesy of Twin Harbors) made for a great afternoon. Eventually I got hungry, so I went outside to check out the vendor who had his grill fired up. He was mostly serving meat products so I went for a grilled cheese sandwich which hit the spot. Follow The Hawk on Instagram and Facebook for details like which food truck will be there, what happy hour specials will be going on, and what entertainment will be featured. Ah, yes, the "official" happy hour specials are listed below for your convenience. The ballgame was over by then, but I was in the mood for a ballpark beer, and they had Busch on tap. Don't worry, they have good beers, too, but I think Busch is their designated happy hour beer. I got a sip of my wife's old fashioned, and it was good and strong. I think that's the happy hour drink of choice here. Jameson the cat made an appearance. He is the resident celebrity. If you are lucky, he will let you pet him, but good luck getting a pic! The Hawk seems to attract an eclectic crowd where everyone fits in. They are "hip" without being hipster. The bartenders are cool and friendly. One of my measuring sticks for a good bar is their jukebox, and The Hawk has one that meets with my approval. Thanks, Steph and Norman! I hope to make it up to The Hawk again soon.

Nestled in a quiet corner of Long Beach, an auspice of hope rises like a Phoenix from the embers of the broken, maladapted lean-to known as "The Nugget". "The Hawk" does not disappoint on any front. You walk in and immediately you feel like this is a bar Hemingway would frequent. And I don't mean Paul Hemingway, my drunk neighbor who came back different from The Great War (I don't mean WWII, for some reason, he calls the three days he spent in Grenada The Great War). Not to denigrate Paul, but I'm talking about Ernest "Papa" Hemingway with the brute force to deck a man before sipping whiskey and chasing it with additional whiskey from his flask. Paul, with all due respect, is a guy that spends his time at California Pizza Kitchen getting grabby with the waitresses and only orders the "Hand-Shaken Agave Mojito", hold everything but the Jack Daniel's. Meanwhile, you've got Ernest ordering the Mint Green Tea Whiskey Sour (delicious), or one of the weekly whiskey specials. Ever tried the "Evan Williams 1783", the year we signed a treaty throwing off the yoke of the British Empire and formally gaining our independence? Well it's popping for $4 on Sunday from 8pm to closing time. You might as well join the Viet Cong if you prefer grabbing some half-hearted concoction at "The Pike". I don't take the Ho Chi Minh trail aboard an ox, I take Route 66 in a Chevelle in this pub. You want a PBR for $3 during happy hour and you bleed red, white, and blue? Come on over and park your car outside (yes, they had the foresight to find a place with a parking lot) and enjoy Serge Gainsbourg, Vicente Fernández, Leonard Cohen, Thelonious Monk, Tom Waits, Frank Sinatra, and more on the jukebox. Or you can go to "The Stache" and spend 10 minutes finding parking for your Toyota Hilux only to drink an overpriced cocktail served by a surly, rancorous bartender; I'm not Jabhat Al-Nusra, I'll stick with Kyle here at "The Hawk" because I wake up every morning saluting the Stars and Bars. Kyle, by the way, grew the underground haven known as "The Blind Donkey" into what it is today. Unfortunately that place is a crowded, claustrophobic hellhole now. Yeah, you can go there and enjoy the red-felt pool table comrade, after waiting two hours for your turn, or you can enjoy the as-green-as-the-almighty-dollar-felted pool tables here; yes, there's two; one, and one for Chesty Puller. And unlike the "V-Room", they're actually useable. So I'll keep on coming here. I neglected to mention the beer slushies, because I wanted that to be a surprise when you ventured over. Oops. Guess you'll have to come here now. read more

Loved the atmosphere at the Hawk. Intimate bar setting: dimly lit with booths lining the walls. Enough space to dance if the music moves you, but there's no dedicated dance floor (it is a bar, not a club, after all). When the small private parking lot is full, street parking is a major challenge. The bathroom line the night I went was epic. While busy, the facilities stayed clean and toilet paper stocked. read more

This place is great. Real nice whiskey book. Vibey but not overdone. 1 pool table (maybe 2? 'cuz the whiskey) adjacent to the bar which is cool if you're lucky enough to get on it. Weird, sexy, horror movie playing without volume. Bar staff was great. I mean, it's almost 5 stars but I'm stingy. Live DJ playing MoTown, soul and R&B on this night. Just well done. This place is around the corner from my apartment so when me and my roomie need a nightcap we just walk here!!! The bartenders are very nice and we love the bar cat, Jameson. We collect photo booth pics and the photo booth they have here is so cool! They have a good menu and decent priced drinks. The T is for Texas has to be my favorite. If you're into billiards, they have a few tables as well. Bathrooms are very clean and have cute walls. I'd definitely take my other friends here if they were in town visiting. read more

I liked the bar. It was a good localish place. They were very busy because of the World Cup Game but they were good. I actually really liked this place for some reason. I think I want to go back, this could be my new "go to" place around here. Came here last night and had a $5 tequila/pineapple. I'm used to usually paying $8-12 for one of these at the bars in Downtown LB. I'll be back because its cheap and the service is fast. My only complaint is that the music was so darn loud, was hard to hear my friend who was sitting right next to me. read more

I love this place..if I lived near I'd probably be here more often. They have a great selection of spirits, wine and beer. The atmosphere is very divey but it doesn't really feel like it. Great local bar. All the bartenders are super cool (Joe, Devin,Shawna,Leah), they have a pretty good happy hour all week & an interesting variety of booze. Lots of new "hipster" (what an awful word) bars opening up on Anaheim, but this was the first, to my knowledge. It has some nice decorative features. The wallpaper is beautiful and the layout is comfortable. I was really craving a "Hemmingway" cocktail and was skeptical about whether I could find someone to make a good one (without going to an expensive place like the 555 or Nick's). Kristen did not disappoint! In fact, she kept me and my friend up to our ears and happy with Hemmingways for a couple of hours! Not everyone can make a good cocktail, in fact I use the Classic Daquiri as a barometer. Only 3 ingredients, but most people cannot make it right. Kristen did an excellent job with this twist on a Daquiri and I will be back considering that my first visit was a smashing success! read more

This is a cool, chill spot to grab a drink. Some of our friends frequent this place during the week for happy hour. We spent new year's eve here. It was still pretty empty around 10 but the closer to midnight it started to really fill up + the show was solid. Truly a gem in the area! read more

I came here due to a recommendation from a friend. When I arrived I was not disappointed! The vibe was great and the drinks were even better! It is very clear that whoever is creating these cocktails has a very special talent. Our bartender was Kyle, and he provided top notch service! Safe to say that this is the best kept secret when it comes to craft cocktails in Long Beach! P.s. I am officially hooked on Slane Irish Whiskey that Kyle recommended!! read more

I liked going to this place, last night was awesome, I had a blast. the drink I ordered was special, it was a Grass Hoopper, no other bar knows ewxactly how to make this trype of cocktail, they knew. I had about three, then it was time to go home. I went home with this man I met there, I forgot his name, he left this morning, thank heaven, "where is the flowers"... ? it is all good. Cheap prices and located in Willmore City, Historic LB. It's just another hipster bar. The locals that use to go to the Nugget, try to create their own space in the back. 3 TVs, a photo booth, a pool table and bathrooms. Nice staff but I don't think I'll be coming back. read more

Great new bar in WLB. Industrial are of Long Beach, a couple miles from Downtown LB. Bartenders were great and made good cocktails. Parking is limited but that shouldn't stop anyone from going, plenty of parking on street. Growing up in Long Beach love to see a new bar in that area. Good happy hour prices and they are not shy of sharing the alcohol love! Will definitely be a frequent local spot. read more

It was my 1st time coming here. And I have to say It was a great experience . The bartenders are super friendly and helpful and they make some really awesome drinks. The vibe and atmosphere makes me want to come back. It is a very nicely laid out and relaxed atmosphere. I'm sure it gets much busier in the evening since we showed up around 6:30 and left around 9. But that being said I enjoyed the fact that it was pretty mellow in there and not a huge crowd. read more

This is a sweet "dive" bar. Drinks are dang good and the beers are cold. There's usually some sort of vegan options when it comes to food (usually in the food truck persuasion) and some sort a vegan "milky" mixed drink available. Staff is personable enough and seems to deal well when it gets packed and they seem to be understaffed. Can't wait for this pandemic nightmare to go away so I can come visit Jamison (the resident cat). I'll still call him Bukowski though. read more

Yesss!! Such a great bar right around the corner from my house! Finally a dope spot in Willmore! Nice bartender, great vibe, cool people, photo booth, pool tables, juke box with awesome music and brand new everything! I've been dreaming about a bar like this in my hood! Came here for my and my twin's bday. It's fancy divey. Is that a thing? It is now. They have classy mixed drinks made with fresh ingredients, cheap beer, even frosty drinks! We're a neighborhood bar on the corner of Anaheim & Magnolia In Long Beach. We’re located in LBC's first and oldest neighborhood, Willmore, right off the 710 Freeway and right above downtown. We've got a pretty good selection of Whiskeys, Tequila, and Mezcal. We have 8 beers on draft that rotate and 20 cans and bottles. Everything from Bud Light to a Sour or a Cider or a Double IPA. We also have a big parking (We know it's rare Long Beach!) lot in front. We have 3 TV's and 2 Pool Tables. Monday we have FREE pool all night! It's clear the owners put a lot of thought and creativity into making their cocktails the centerpiece of the experience. That said, the execution didn't live up to the concept. The menu appears to rotate regularly, and while the drinks were certainly unique, most of the cocktails we tried were hit or miss. At roughly $22 per drink, I expected more balance and refinement. One cocktail started with flavors reminiscent of an Old Fashioned, but after the initial sip, the combination of bitters and fruit syrups created an unpleasant cough syrup like finish. We tried a mocktail as well, and it was mostly ice and soda water, with what seemed like a collection of syrups doing most of the heavy lifting. The drinks were creative, but many of the flavor profiles felt disjointed rather than intentional. The biggest issue, however, was the bar service and sanitation practices. I watched a bartender place a cucumber garnish into a glass using his bare hands, touching the entire garnish in the process. He then continued to take credit cards, cash, and other items before stuffing ice into additional drinks with his bare hands. Whether or not this technically violates health code standards, it certainly wasn't appetizing to watch and left a poor impression. Parking is another challenge. There is no dedicated parking, and unless you get lucky, expect to park several blocks away and walk. Overall, the atmosphere is a lot of fun and the cocktail menu is ambitious, but the drinks didn't justify the price point, and the sanitation concerns were hard to overlook. I wouldn't rush back, especially given the cost and parking difficulties.

The decor definitely reminded me of my grandparents' house in Taiwan, with vintage, ornate wooden chairs, dragon/lion statue carvings, and even a historic century old marital bed that had been repurposed into a booth. The drinks were also VERY unique, with my favorite being Hua sheng (literally meaning peanut), which was crafted from a nostalgic childhood peanut milk drink. All our cocktails were crafted very well, to the point where I thought they were a bit on the lighter side since I couldn't really taste the alcohol. This section does get really busy though and only had one bartender who is making/serving drinks and taking orders, so do expect a bit of a wait. Overall, highly recommend checking out this vibey vintage Taiwanese-inspired speakeasy (that my inner history nerd was so excited about), and I'll definitely be back to try their food items as well as their two other bar/restaurant concepts!

People were living for karaoke and it definitely seems to be on a regular rotation for some of the patrons. The Blind Donkey is definitely a place that you need to check out if you are in town and want a fun evening.

We parked in the multi-story parking garage behind Hamburger Mary's. Secret Island is a little over a block away. You can make reservations on OpenTable. It has a bit of a speakeasy entrance, as it is not plainly marked. Look for the staircase going down with greenery around it and the Secret Island sign downstairs. Go right at the bottom of the stairs and there is a little walkway where you see a very cool tiki display. It you stay there long enough, the lights will flash and you will hear thunder. Walk a little further and go through the door to enter. I was blown away by the atmosphere and build. Kudos to Bamboo Ben! It is dimly lit with a ton of cave wall, bamboo, thatch, netting, tiki lights, floats, skulls, tikis, and other décor. The bar is loaded with bottles and looks great with dark blue and green backlighting. The bar top is wood with deep cutouts that are filled with clear epoxy. The booths in the main dining area are little tiki huts and even have clouds overhead. There was great tiki music playing the whole time. A few times an hour a thunderstorm hits. The lights dim, lightning flashes with thunder sound effects, and red lights illuminate cracks in the floor that looks like lava veins. There is also a photo-op "Pele's Throne" which is a big lava rock surrounded chair. We sat at the bar and had the coconut shrimp appetizer ($12). The shrimp were breaded and cooked well, and had a coconut sprinkle on top. The spicy dipping sauce complemented the shrimp well. I started out with the Drunken Monkey (Makers Mark 46, Jamaican rum, banana liqueur, cinnamon, allspice, Angostura bitters, normally $19, $17 during happy hour). It was somewhat bourbon forward with a little funk from the Jamaican rum. I definitely got the cinnamon notes with a little banana and allspice in the background. She started out with the El Capitan Hook (Del Maguey mezcal, pineapple, banana liqueur, Luxardo cherry liqueur, lime, $17, $15 during happy hour). This was smoke forward with light pineapple and banana flavor. I had the Hula burger ($18) which was very good with a lot of different flavors from the various toppings. It came with a decent amount of fries, and was a filling plate. She had the pineapple bowl fried rice and added with BBQ pork ($17 + $5 for pork add-on). It is served in half of a scooped out pineapple and had a good amount of rice with pork and green onions on top. It had a good mix of teriyaki sauce on the rice and BBQ sauce on the pork. Next, I had the Rum Runner (coconut and blended dark rums, banana liqueur, raspberry, grenadine, pineapple, orange, lime, $18, $15 during happy hour). It was very pineapple and coconut forward which overpowered all of the other ingredients. She also had the Let That ManGo (white rhum agricole, coconut, mango, lemon, $18, $16 during happy hour). The primary flavors here were mango with some grassiness from the agricole. We were here from about 6pm to 8pm on a Wednesday night and it was pretty dead with only a few other people in the place the whole time. They do have a stage in the back with live music acts, so it is probably busier when there is entertainment and on weekends. Our first bartender was Alex who was nice but we barely talked with him. Manager Pedro took over the bartender duties later on and we had a great time chatting with him. Service was great from both of them. The drinks are a few dollars above average, but if you come during happy hour, the drinks are several dollars off. Happy hour is currently all day Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday, and Thursday through Saturday from 5pm to 8pm. The food was good, the drinks were ok to good, and the atmosphere was great. Normally, this would probably be a one and done, but I really liked the build and would like to come back when it is busier, maybe on a weekend.

Parking is a bit of a game of chance thanks to the tiny lot, so plan accordingly. Once you're inside though, the restaurant is super clean, modern, and the service is fast and attentive. We started with the papaya salad. It was just okay--I'm still trying to figure out why there was a blanket of romaine lettuce casually lounging on top. I ordered medium spice, which turned out to be "medium if you breathe fire for fun." The papaya was also a little more raw than I personally like. The tom kha soup was decent, but the real MVP was the drunken noodles with beef. Those noodles were absolutely swimming in savory goodness and perfectly soft. I would've happily ordered a second plate and called it "dessert." Overall, I'd definitely come back--mostly because those drunken noodles are already living rent-free in my head.

The Thai tea popsicle also lived up to the TikTok hype, although the actual Thai tea itself was on the sweeter side. If you love sugar, you'll probably enjoy it. My biggest complaint with the food was the spicy Pad Thai. The flavor was great, but it came with what felt like a whole chicken farm and a cameo appearance from the noodles. I ordered Pad Thai, not chicken with noodle garnish. The Pad See Ew was also noticeably salty. Now you're probably wondering why I'm giving this place a low rating if most of the food was decent. Unfortunately, the service completely overshadowed the meal. When it was time to pay, my aunt was figuring out how much everyone needed to Zelle her since the restaurant only allows a maximum of two cards for split payments. While we were trying to do the math, our waiter stood over us watching the payment screen like he was supervising a final exam. He was clearly waiting to make sure a tip was entered. My aunt politely asked him to give us a minute, and thankfully he walked away. Maybe when you see a family actively calculating a bill, that's your cue to...actually give them a minute. Keep in mind we also tipped 20% despite all this. Throughout the meal, he did stop by our table, but it rarely felt like he was checking in to make sure everything was okay. If anything I felt rushed. He also gave off that "customer service smile" that disappears the moment you stop looking. The cherry on top for me happened as we were leaving. We had been sitting on the outdoor patio talking for a bit after paying, which is pretty normal for my family. Before leaving, I went inside to ask where the restroom was. The guy and girl behind the bar looked at each other, laughed, and then asked if I was a paying customer. Keep in mind, I was literally holding a to-go bag with leftovers from the restaurant. I responded, "Yeah, I just finished eating," while holding up the bag that made it painfully obvious. Only then did they tell me where the restroom was. Nothing says "valued customer" quite like being interrogated about whether you actually ate there while carrying your leftovers. It's unfortunate because the food had some highlights, and the restaurant itself has a cute atmosphere. But the service made it feel like customers are viewed more as transactions than guests. Between hovering over us during payment and questioning whether I even belonged there after spending money, I left feeling more unwelcomed than satisfied. I'll happily support a restaurant that appreciates my business instead of making me feel like I have to prove I earned the right to use the restroom after paying for dinner.

Both pasta dishes were excellent and I wish there was a little more parpadelle limone on the plate. Pizza was excellent and that sourdough crust was heaven. I cannot wait to come back here with others. The ambiance was wonderful with the patio seating and servers were constantly checking to ensure that the experience was great.

I went on a Thursday night and it was slammed. They do not take reservations but they do have a waitlist via toast that you can join while you walk around and wait for your table. Plenty to do and see on 2nd street. We ordered the party platter for 4 people! It was the perfect amount of food with leftovers to take home. Everything was cooked to PERFECTION. Our beef was a textbook medium rare and was so juicy and tender, as was the rest of the meat. The chicken was so moist and flavorful, as was all the shawarma. All meats were seasoned beautifully. The rice underneath was stunning as well and really caught all the juices from the meat on top. The roasted tomatoes, onions, and pickles were the perfect compliments to help freshen up the palette during the meal. The sauces were amazing and there was a clear favorite (the garlic sauce) which was annihilated by all four of us. Service was friendly! The pocket pita bread was not what I had in mind (I'm used to thicker ones), but the kids really loved it overall. Ice cream (4.5/5): We ordered two scoops from the dessert menu. They were both really thick, creamy and almost chewy like liquidized mochi. It was a very interesting texture but nonetheless a nice tasty treat on a hot day. I much preferred the vanilla bean, as the pistachio tasted and looked rather artificial (and I'm a pistachio ice cream lover). This place had so many to-go orders during the afternoon we were there. I can see why. Food is super fresh and tasty. I think we will be back the next time we are visiting.

**Experience at The Hawk** An incident that occurred during my visit to The Hawk yesterday, 8/15, which happened to be my birthday. It was my family's first time at your establishment, though my two sisters are regular patrons who have always spoken highly of the atmosphere and service. Unfortunately, our experience last night was quite the opposite. We were excited to enjoy some pool and cocktails, but an interaction with one of your bartenders, Night B, left us very disappointed. When my in-law expressed dissatisfaction with a cocktail she received, Night B refused to replace it, citing that she was not obligated to do so since she had not received a tip. Her approach was not only unprofessional but also quite aggressive. She grabbed the bar receipt and forcefully banged it on the table, making my sister-in-law and I feel uncomfortable. We fully understand that there are policies in place regarding drink replacements, but the manner in which this was handled was inappropriate. It was our first round of drinks, and she couldn't have known whether a tip would be provided later when the service and drinks met our expectations. We were simply trying to have a good time and celebrate my birthday, and this encounter dampened the entire evening. My sisters have always had positive experiences at The Hawk and have particularly praised a bartender named Devine for her politeness and the overall chill vibe of the place. They've also mentioned the owner, Kyle, as being someone who fosters a welcoming environment. Additionally, the security staff was very friendly and professional, which we appreciated. Based on our experience, I would advise against visiting on a Thursday night and recommend avoiding service from the bartender wearing flower earrings. After all, a wise man once said that "the only color a business should see is green" it was-- Frederick Douglas or Kermit? Anyway... If I had bothered to read the reviews, I may have been discouraged to enter. Half of the reviews mention "stabbing" and half mention "hookers", which would lead me to believe that El Paraiso is Spanish for "the knife-wielding prostitute". Instead I read the reviews while checking in, where I wrote the tip, "This place is only scary to people who get scared. Show respect to others and you"ll get it back. We're all brothers and sisters just trying to drown out or celebrate our meaningless lives." I was drunk when I wrote that-- so drunk that I might have had, in fact, a knife in me at the time-- but I'll stand by it. Not too crowded at 11pm on a Friday night, a DJ blasting music in Spanish, we slid up to the comfortable bar and met Emilia, a sweet lady who offered a shot of Patron for the birthday boy. We got a few looks from the locals, so I did feel a little like an elephant at a donkey park (weird analogy, I know, but "black guy eating pho" seemed racist). Like any new dive, I just avoided looking too long at a girl so I didn't get the ol' "qué estás mirando?" with an upside down question mark from some hombre. Or chick with an ombre. My six vodka and cranberry drinks were bright red, usually a sign of a weak drink, but the drink was served in a tall glass instead of a lowball, so I'm assuming it had the right pour but with more juice. ( I guess I could have asked for "less juice" in Spanish, but I probably would have said "games hands" or "little ghost" instead and THAT, mi amigos, is what gets you stabbed.) I ordered six grey goose and crans (I learned "OTRO!" at my first Mexican party- my friend told me "OTRO!" meant "CHEERS" so I kept trying to explain to the hostess that I didn't want another shot as she kept pouring them because I kept shouting "OTRO!" followed by "No, no, no, I didn't want another...oh fine".) They were only $7.50 which is cheap. That leaves quite enough money for gauze for all the stab wounds. So, anyway, how was the crowd? The only trouble we saw was a small fight that broke out at the end, but that could be anywhere (Emilia kicked him out). I mean 36/36 has more shady people. Met some nice, friendly, funny regulars (Ivan and Blanca). One guy stared at me. I didn't feel like I could totally be my silly self, like handing a wrapped stick of gum to the birthday boy with my mouth. That move seems pretty stab worthy. El Paraiso. A cut above the rest. And your ribs.
