Had never tried the restaurant even though I'd seen it many times and meant to. Delicious experience. My husband and I took our order to-go. Great taste, huge portions so you get your moneys worth, food was hot and made as ordered. We got the chili cheese fries with pastrami- wish there was a bit more pastrami but outside of that they were bomb! An entire bag of onion rings - crunchy & fresh! And a yummy gooey grilled cheese! I had their Cheeseburger this past weekend, and it was delicious. Tonight I was at Sam's club and decided to pick up another cheeseburger. When I got home, I only live 3 miles from there. My burger tasted rotten and it was cold maybe lukewarm at best. It had an off taste to it, I don't know if it was the pickles, but something was wrong. if you haven't tried this place before, it's a great different option if you're bored of the typical drive thrus we have around town. the chili cheese fries were amazing but the burger i got was just alright. nothing crazy or too complicated. my biggest complaint is the drive thru wait times. we only had 3 items in our order including a drink and i felt like we were in a sit down restaurant just waiting for even our drink. read more

It's been awhile since I've been to The Hat mostly because there aren't any in SD. This I think might be the closest one. We actually stopped here for lunch on the way to Joshua Tree. This was during COVID. There was only one other customer inside. We took our order and ate it in the massive parking lot. Pastrami and roast beef french dip were both delicious. The star was the onion rings! They were perfectly fried and seasoned. I used to go to The Hat and like to order the massive fries topped with chili, cheese, and pastrami but really it was all for the spectacle. I don't really like their fries. But hey, maybe loaded onion rings would be good. Oh and The Hat is one of the few places or maybe only place I've ever seen with cherry Fanta. Mix that with come coke and you got yourself a refreshing cherry coke which tastes very different that the straight up cherry coke. read more

They have usually very good service, today the serving taking my order over charged us 53.00 but failed to get our older right, in fact she forgot to give us our fries that we paid for, we called hats and notified them of their mistake, we returned to grab the (large fries) but instead of filling the bag up she gave up the large bag but it was half empty, we paid 6.00 for the fries and it seems as if the lady was being insincere or petty by giving us such a small serving after she messed up and didn't give the fries from the beginning. Ordered onion rings and got fries. When I went back up to the counter the girl just asked me for my receipt and said "it says fries" and I said "yes, but I ordered onion rings". Miss straight face replied, "I will have to ask the manager". Manager waves me over to the register, same man that rang me up and made the mistake. Obviously the one in charge. He told me it will be 25 cents. Wish I thought to pay with a credit card like my original purchase, maybe he wouldn't have wanted to charge me since I'm sure they get charged a processing fee. Sadly this is the closest location to us but from now on I will drive further to Rancho Cucamonga or Brea for The Hat. This location is not consistent in the quality of the food. Possibly the best freshly made fast food I've ever had. We made a detour when we saw the billboard on the freeway to go to this place because I've b are how good it is. The word of mouth on is amazing for how good their pastrami sandwiches and onion rings are (oh my their onion rings). If I'm going to eat unhealthy food, the calories better be worth it. The Hat is worth it. The food was indeed amazing. Their prices are very affordable: $10 for a massive sandwich dip and less than $5 for onion rings. A single serving of those onion rings overflows so much they give it to you in its own bag. One serving is good for four adults to share. Not even kidding. The pastrami is thinly shaved and robust in taste. Better than the famous places in LA like wexlers and langers if you ask me. You have to ask them for the au jus, strange that it's not automatically provided to you given that their famous sandwich is called a pastrami dip. Their soda fountain includes orange bang, and pineapple bang. They taste like orange Julius. Not healthy but so delicious. They are open late (until 11pm on a Saturday for example). read more

Wow oh wow! Loved the food! I wasn't a pastrami fan before but this place definitely was a game changer. The pastrami flavors were superb, not too salt or too peppery. The sandwich was perfectly balanced between meat and bread. Loved the pickle on the inside. Added some chili on top and you're done son. I loved the fries. Yes it was a lot so that's something you can share with your friends or family. I got the chili on the side and I felt it was better because it kept my fries crispy. Ordered chili cheese fries. Super huge portion. Hot chili. Not that much cheese for two dollars but that was okay. My problem was almost all of the fries were undercooked. Not just soggy, like hard and cold in the middle. Called the store to let them know and the gentleman argued with me saying he checked all the orders himself earlier. Hmm, I was unaware anyone at the establishment taste tests EVERY single order. I didn't make it up and he was demeaning and suggested I bring them in. I've been eating at the hay for years and decided after partaking for dinner this evening I should finally write a review. Not sure why there's so many mediocre reviews here. Yes, it's a chain. If you're expecting boutique restaurant food that's not the restaurants fault. Wife loves the pastrami which is their specialty. I always get a large fry, well done and a side of gravy. The gravy fries are delicious. Kids always get a grilled cheese and it is very cheesy with the perfect amount of crisp on the bread. Been awhile since I've had the Hat but decided to get it tonight and sat in the backyard by a fire and enjoyed some hot, crispy fries dipped in gravy. Are the entire bag of fries and all the gravy. Not exactly health food but delicious on a cool evening. This location is pretty convenient but I've also eaten at the Rancho Cucamonga and Brea locations. Four of us went there for lunch our first time. I had heard great things about the Hat locations in LA. It's a chain and I think a franchise. This location In Murrieta is just not that good. I can see why it gets only 3 and a half stars on Yelp. The main problem with this location is the terrible service! The guy waiting on us seemed very snotty and borderline rude. You would think with so many restaurants closed because of Covid that they would be happy to still have customers. The food is just ok nothing special. The worst sandwich was the cheesesteak or it should be called the lettuce and bread sandwich. The fries with gravy were very good and huge portions. The onion rings are also very good. The rest eh! I would only maybe go there for the fries with gravy. That's about it. I was in customer service for years and believe me a smile a thank you and being friendly to your customers goes a long way. I have been a patron of the Hat for over 40 years and love the food, but for the 1st time ever, I had an unpleasant experience. I ordered a chili cheeseburger, fries, and a coke at the Murrieta location. When I got my order and sat down to indulge, I realized there was no chili on my burger. I went back to the same cashier and informed him that my burger had no chili. He responded that I had ordered a cheeseburger, but I disagreed since I always order either a pastrami or chili cheeseburger. I asked him if I could have a small amount of chili and I would pay the difference, but he charged me for a full cup of chili and said it was about the same amount. It was a nominal amount, but I will not forget his callous response. I could not enjoy my meal after this poor treatment and will no longer visit this establishment. read more

Be sure to add the Mustard and pickles when asked. The Bar-B-Que Beef sandwich was a sloppy mess. The BBQ sauce was on the smoky side and might be off-putting to some. Not recommend. Turkey Sandwich on sourdough was solid and something like I'd make at home. Even though it looks like a cheap turkey sandwich it actually tasted good and the bread was nice and soft. - The Hat reminds me of The Yellow Basket but not as good. - Although this is a new building, the inside decor is 1970's cafeteria. - All orders are put into "togo" bags. - All condiments are from togo pouches. - They just raised their prices. We hadn't had one FOR YEARS and the only other one we'd seen was the one in Simi Valley. Drive thru service was fast and friendly. The sandwich.....AMAZING. It's called a pastrami french dip because they've put a bit of the dip into the french bread but we got a little cup of the au jus to further soak the french bread with and it was everything.
