Stepping into The Hat for the first time I got New York Deli vibes in the best sense of the term. Although don't confuse what they have in their menu as NY Deli like but the atmosphere is quite similar to it. What seems like original interior, white collar and blue collar people sitting side by side and the kitchen staff cranking out food at an incredible pace. I ordered the Pastrami Dip and Wet fries (fries with gravy). The pastrami dip was greasy and came with pickles and mustard already on it on a soft white bread roll. The fries were good but tasted rather under cooked. I would advise customers to split a side of fries because the portion is massive. I would highly recommend going to this restaurant but instead of getting the fries, consider the onion rings instead as I had a couple and they were well cooked and delicious. read more

I grew up getting pastrami dips from the Hat so it is my benchmark for pastrami's! I love the pastrami and the onion rings. It's fast food but great quick service. As a northeasterner in Southern California, who lived on the New England side of the New York City metro area, my standard for pastrami is pretty high. The Hat meets the highest expectations and is a great, simple, unpretentious hang. Highly recommend this place. Fast service, great food, great vibe. The Hat is slipping... their pastrami sandwich has increased in price by 35%, and decreased in size by 50%. It's sad to see another one bite the dust, but that's where they are headed off they keep this up, cause the large majority of their food isn't good. read more

So good. We've been to a few other locations. This one is small and happened to be near our hotel. What a coincidence! We got here around 11:30 and there was not an empty table in sight. It's not hard to see why because it was soo good. We shared a pastrami sandwich. It is the best thing on the menu. I heard the onion rings are really good too. Long live the Hat!! read more

The Hat is one of those SoCal restaurant businesses that has been around forever. What they offer is really very-very good pastrami. Yes, they have other meat options and other things like fries and stuff but what they're really known for is their pastrami. And, it's very good. This is one of their newer locations. They've expanded all across the LA/OC area. Their location in Pasadena remains my favorite. This being said, this location is very well designed. It is very The Hat. They have a nice indoor dining area with a number of tables and some booths. They also have a couple of tables outside, if you want to eat in the fresh air. They also have a drive-through at this location. So, if you want to grab your sandwich, and or or whatever, on the go, this option is available to you. Overall, if you're looking for a really good pastrami sandwich, this is your place to go if you're in Lake Forest. read more

The food is great! The pastrami is what they are known for, but the French dip is also great! The fries are ok, but the quantity they serve make us for the quality IMO. When it comes to ordering, speed is not what they are known for... it's going to take awhile. The drive through is unusable imo as there have been times where we waited 15-20 minutes to get our meal. The place is always pretty clean and has an old dinner shop feel. I do recommend the place, but go inside when you order and understand it's not fast food in terms of speed. read more

Everyone knows about The Hat's location in the Inland Empire, but I cannot convey to you the extreme shock and joy I experienced while driving in Lake Forest and spotting one in OC! I immediately pulled my car over and grabbed a pastrami sandwich. AND IT DIDN'T DISAPPOINT. The service was quick, the food was fantastic, and the price was just right. If you're craving a pastrami sandwich that will blow your mind, *The Hat* is the place to go. I tried the Pastrami Dip, and let me tell you--it was damned tasty! This isn't your standard roast beef dip with a cup of au jus. Instead, the pastrami comes pre-dipped, slathered in its own juices, and piled high on a fresh French roll with mustard. The sandwich was stuffed with so much incredible, flavorful pastrami that it was almost too much meat (but let's be honest, there's no such thing as too much pastrami - especially if it's GOOD pastrami!). HALF the sandwich is a full-on meal in itself! For a side, I opted out of their famously enormous bags of fries and onion rings and went with the potato salad--and I was not disappointed. Served in a normal-sized container, this is some of the best potato salad I've ever had at a sandwich spot. It was creamy but not overloaded with mayo, and the potatoes were fresh, not dried out or overly mushy. A simple side, but absolutely delicious! The store was clean, and even though the crew was handling a packed crowd, the service was efficient. Parking was decent, but getting back onto Rockfield during lunch hour is definitely an adventure (pro tip: use the Centre Drive exit!). All in all: a great sandwich, a fantastic side, and a solid experience. I'll absolutely be back! read more

This place is popular for their pastrami however I really like to get the tuna sandwich and chili cheese fries. The tuna sandwich is especially good on a warm day. The chili cheese fries are enormous definitely shareable. The chili has a good flavor not overly salty and they put lots of cheese. The fries are a bit thicker but crispy and soft. The Hat has been home to signature pastrami dips and chili cheese fries since 1952! Believe it or not, the Lake Forest location is their 9th store and opened back in 2004. They by no means serve up a healthy meal, but I'd def recommend ordering a pastrami dip, chili cheese fries and topping off with an Orange Bang on your cheat day. I appreciate that their pricing is fair, especially during these inflationary times, and I'm a fan of their portion sizes. This location also has a drive thru but if you decide to dine-in, the service is personable and efficient. With locations across the Southland, it's no wonder why this establishment is popular and the greasy goodness never disappoints! read more

Love this place, they have the best pastrami sandwich and it's big enough to share with a their fries. My only complaint is their chili, it has no flavor at all. We always order it on the side and add some of the pepper juice and salt in it then dip our fries. We also found their secret menu pastrami fries and we were so excited to try but unfortunately was, disappointed. read more

I'm usually not a fan of pastrami because it feels like too much, BUT, the classic pastrami sandwich from the Hat has become the exception. There is SO MUCH finely sliced pastrami in each sandwich with a good bun, and a great contrast from the acidity of mustard and pickles. Truly a great sandwich. I have never dined in, but I've heard its VERY casual in there. Highly recommended! read more

Yummy burgers and fries. This is a Chain, but this location would make you think that it was the original or a mom & pop place. By that I mean that the staff were super attentive and service was lightening quick. There were two folk in the dining room sweeping and bussing tables. The bathrooms were clean and the food, in addition to quality and quantity, was not outrageously priced. read more

After reviewing some years ago that I was not a fan of the Hat, I've gone back a few times with friends or with my wife and honestly can say it's grown on me. The Pastrami Dip has finally won me over! It's obviously not the best sandwich I've ever had, but for what it is, it's pretty darn good. The pastrami is tender and flavorful and the bun is nice and soft, you got to eat it pretty quick cause if you don't, the juice will definitely make the bread soggy. The fries are out of control, I've mistakenly ordered the large a few times and forgot that you need a dump truck to load em in, yes, they give you a ton of fries. I just wanted to update review to show that they've won me over and made me a fan! read more

This is one of the best pastrami sandwiches around, but definitely get the au jus with your order. Also, get the fat fries with a side of gravy instead of the gravy fries. The latter are not only more expensive but the gravy gravy is piled on top of the fries and makes them soggy. If you get the side of gravy, it's less expensive and your fries stay crisp. Decent seating as well. read more

Been here a couple more times, and adding a star. Service still good. I like the consistency. The food is definitely better eaten fresh than waiting to bring it back to the office or home to eat. Chili fries with tomato and pickle is my go to order. Adding cheese is good if you like cheese. I enjoy both with or without cheese. Leftover plain fries still not very good. I still only tried the pastrami sandwich. It is decent. Nothing extraordinary about it except that it is hard to find in the immediate area. Not bad if you are craving it. It is a bit heavy to eat frequently, but I do enjoy eating here on a diet cheat day. Definitely a solid 4-star place. Recommended for locals with a craving. Value is pretty good for Irvine. Pastrami sandwich was great and up to expectations. Service was quick and efficient. Place was very crowded with only a couple tables available. The tables had crumbs and other debris left by others. I have grown up eating here and I have been out of the city for almost 5 years. I have always gone to the Pasadena one but we went to this one because it was closest to the lab. It tastes exactly the same and the service has always been great. I love the vibes extremely cozy and homie. And the serving sizes are still huge. I was very surprised to see The Hat deep in Orange County, but the pastrami sandwich is just as good as either the Alhambra, Pasadena, or Monterey Park locations. In some dishes, that flavor profile worked really well, but in others, it definitely didn't land the same way. We started with the warm artisan rosemary focaccia served with whipped honey butter. The bread itself had that same subtle tang I noticed throughout the meal, but the honey butter balanced it out nicely. The added sweetness helped cut through the tang, making it much more enjoyable overall. Next, we had the baked skillet mac and cheese, which was easily the standout of the entire meal. I don't say this lightly, but it was about as close to perfect as mac and cheese can get. It was rich, creamy, well-seasoned, and had that ideal baked texture on top. This dish alone made a strong impression. We also ordered the cast iron roasted Brussels sprouts. These had a similar tangy-sweet flavor like the focaccia, and overall they were actually quite good. However, the raisins added to the dish didn't really contribute anything meaningful. At first glance, I even thought they were corn, which was confusing. While the sprouts themselves were well-cooked and flavorful, the raisins felt unnecessary and didn't elevate the dish. The Caesar salad was probably my least favorite item. I'm not entirely sure why it was labeled a Caesar salad, because it didn't resemble the classic version at all. The Tijuana vinaigrette was extremely overpowering and leaned heavily acidic, almost like eating straight lemon. It lacked the creamy, rich, balanced flavor you expect from a traditional Caesar, which made it disappointing. For the main, I had the prime 10oz flat iron steak frites. The steak itself was cooked perfectly and had great flavor, so no complaints there. Unfortunately, the fries were cold when they arrived, which took away from the overall experience of the dish. Overall, the meal was okay. It's not something I would rave about, but it might be worth trying at least once. With such a limited menu, I expected a bit more consistency and refinement across the dishes. It wasn't the worst meal I've had, but it also wasn't the best just somewhere in the middle.
