We went in on A Saturday afternoon at 4pm a party of four and my in laws come here often . There were just a few people were there. We saw about 20 empty tables and were told that we needed reservations that there were no available seats and that we couldn't be seated until 7:30pm. We left and then called the restaurant 3minutes later and were told we could be seated in 10min. We are a party of four , and of Mexican American race and we feel we were discriminated against. This place is obviously lacking someplace . My husband was very angry, he grew up on Vashon and his parents still live there and they are a multiracial couple and were very angry at the discrimination that was there. read more

The positives of our experience were outweighed by negatives. We ordered a greek appetizer plate that was DELICIOUS. But when our meal came it was barely warm and to be honest I have no idea how a chef would let it leave the kitchen. The shoe string fries were overcooked and had the consistency of crunchy graham crackers. The marinated portabella mushroom burger and clam chowder were hardly warm. To top this off the bar service was pretty pathetic and while we were eating they stacked up a line of dirty glasses in front of us and took off. We enjoyed our first visit to Vashon Island during the Art Studio Tour. Downtown is short 3 blocks and The Hardware Store is a full restaurant with tables and a bar. You can tell it was a hardware store converted to the central place to eat and meet. Many customers are regulars and locals and very friendly. It's cutesy - sort of the way you would expect given the building used house (shocking) a hardware store - but also comfortable. While visiting Vashon for the first time, this place beckoned for lunch! The location is perfectly situated in the middle of town. The menu options were varied - and the cheeseburger I ended up ordering was terrific. The salad could have used more dressing but otherwise, the meal was quite good. My only gripe is the prices-far too steep for a neighborhood cafe. The service was excellent (though my friend ordered a side of dressing and it never came...I liken it to an innocent mistake, but she was pretty miffed). We came here with our very grumpy son tonight. Our waitress Silvia brought oyster crackers which he really liked. And even though we did have to depart early on account of this, we truly enjoyed our food. I had the Reuben sandwich which was moist and savory with perfectly melted cheese and the perfect amount of sauerkraut. The Caesar salad was amazing! I rarely have perfectly executed Caesar salad, the croutons were crunchy, the freshly shaved Parmesan was generous and with pepper added, it was heavenly. Finally I had a macaroni to go for my grumpy son. We had it hours later and it was also very tasty. This is a perfect place for good service and a hearty meal on a beautiful island! read more

I live in Seattle. A friend and I decided to check out Vashon and the Lighthouse. After a lovely day on the water, we were hungry. I chose this place. (And to be honest, there aren't a lot of places, of course. But this one looked interesting.) I liked the old building. It has some character. For being so much wood, it didn't seem loud. It wasn't crowded yet, either, so I don't know if the volume goes up. Didn't seem like it. We found out it's only a bar menu until after five. I was bummed at first, because on the dinner menu outside I'd seen a dish I wanted to try. But no matter. I went for the Bacon cheeseburger, because it had been a long time since I'd had one. My friend chose a salad and chicken strips. First thing first: I would hardly call those strips. They were fat and juicy. We were impressed that they were juicy all the way through, and found the batter for the coating nice and light, instead of all bread-like. I was pleased to see a toasted bun for my burger, and not a giant roll that some places pass off as gourmet, that makes me feel like I have a stone in my belly just by looking at it. The BBQ sauce was nice. Might as for more on the side if you like yours, well...saucier. Good coffee, a nice wee pot of tea, and a friendly waitperson. Who I must give kudos to for being the ONE person at the time serving and tending bar, yet still took pretty good care of us, all with a smile. Then there was Glen. Nice ambience, friendly servers and good food. It's a great stop for food and drinks at Vashon. They have a little veggie menu that includes portobello burger and a rice dish. My partner took a mahi mahi taco as appetizer that was yum and was almost dinner sized serving. Freshly made chips were also delicious. Service is slow, and we ended up taking the next ferry back home after we missed our ferry. read more

On a recent visit to Vashon, I stopped by the Hardware Store with a friend for a weekend lunch. My initial impression was that it was surprisingly packed and incredibly loud. There was a considerable wait before I was able to be seated, and there were only 2 of us. The quality of the food helped compensate for the noise and the wait. They have a decent variety of menu options, and including gluten-free fair. I had the fried chicken and it was excellent, and my companion had a ruben sandwich. There is a full-bar and the old fashioned that I ordered was appropriately strong and mixed well. It's clear by the clientele that they are a favorite to the locals, there were several families with children there. The prices seemed a bit steep, but most of the prices on Vashon are abnormally elevated. read more

2 1/2 Stars. Very good food, reasonable prices, but incredibly poor service. My wife and I were visiting Vashon over Christmas and visited The Hardware Store for Saturday Brunch. The Eggs Benedict - my universal gauge of quality brunch - was excellent. The THS Burger was also good. Overall - a very positive food experience. Unfortunately, the service very nearly ruined everything. Our waiter - a middle aged gentleman with a pony tail - could not have cared less about whether we enjoyed our meal or not (never inquired about how things were or if we needed anything else). The kicker, however, was when he literally brought our check and began removing my wife's plate while she was physically in the act of eating off the same plate. The situation was so obviously bad that the table next to us remarked how rude he had been. A case of being "spaced out" at work? Perhaps. Maybe a bad day? Everyone's entitled to a few of those. But this was some of the worst customer service both my wife and I have experienced at a (moderately) fine dining restaurant. We would return - though ONLY for the food. read more

If there's one thing you need to come here for, it's their donut! It's like a cream puff and a malasada ran away and had a baby. Soft like a donut but with a crust and a little chewy too. As we were leaving the island, we stopped by and bought all they had left (no shame). If there's one thing you can do without, it's the off putting "service" by the host. We went here twice while visiting the Island so that says something. It was breakfast both times and the food was good. I wish there were a few more options but if you are looking for a good breakfast spot this checks the box. It is often packed o. The weekends, but if you get there before 930 you can usually get a seat in the bar, which is what we did. As for the service, we found it to be good day 2 and the first day we had to wait a bit for everything, but I think that is just the vibe there not having a huge sense of urgency. read more

Wow, talk about a restaurant that gets it. Lots of vegetarian and gluten free options, good coffee, great atmosphere, clean bathrooms, REAL jam to go with your toast, great coffee cups to hold on to, good size portions and good prices and a lot of other nice touches that make this a place I will return to every time I have the chance while on Vashon Island. The only thing I would give them a down mark on was that the servers could stand to smile and be friendly...I didn't get that from them. They were pretty matter of fact but knowledgeable. It could have been that they had been slammed and they were just tired, which I can understand but for their own edification I would have tipped better if they smiled. read more

I really like this place. Good food at prices that are really great for the quality. Lots of gluten-free food including clam chowder (TOUGH to find gluten-free!) and burger buns and many other gluten-free offerings that are very good!! I got a burger and a salad and the clam chowder. It was all very good. The waitress was really nice. She is gluten-free too, so I knew I'd be well taken care of. I was really glad she told me that. Wow - what happened to the hardware store. I used to not bother but it seems that they have a new menu and it is fantastic. I recently had they Waygu beef sliders and a side of truffled fries at happy hour, That along with a very local IPA (Chuck's?) made this a memorable experience. I also recently had their larger version of that burgher and noted that it was on a home-baked bun. Their breakfasts have always been great. They make some of the best little home-made donut poppers I've ever had. Fresh jams and perfectly executed omelets. My other favorite is the flatbread margherita pizza. Another perfect accompaniment to nosh on while enjoying any one of their fine spirits. I'll be back soon... read more

We went with our parents, and our two kids. I'm gluten-free, and figured I was resigned to a sad salad, but no! Lots of delicious GF things on the menu. I ordered the GF fish and chips, and it was very good. So rare to have gluten-free batter for things! I also ordered the GF focaccia and oil as an appetizer, and that was also good. Hubby ordered the vegetarian special, said it was delicious, that he'd been eating too much junk lately and this "clean food" was very good and just what his body needed. Parents were very happy with their meals, and kids did, too. We live over in Seattle, but we'd like to visit Vashon more, and this will definitely be on our lists of places to come back to eat. I had not been for several years but thought I would give it a try for lunch. Really wanted fish and chips but it was not on the menu so I ordered the fish sandwich. It came with fries and cole slaw, but the slaw was on the sandwich and was so extremely overdressed the dressing pooled on the plate and made the bun totally soggy. Ate it anyway (scraped off half the slaw and didn't eat the soggy bun) but by the time I got home I was sick to my stomach. I won't go back. read more

Such a cute place and such nasty food. I had the teriyaki chicken which was the best of the worst but had obviously bottled overseasoned sauce and very tough chicken breast. My friend sent back her fish tacos because the fish stunk and we could all smell it. I am hoping she got a refund since they took off the tacos and brought her back just the side salad. Chicken strips were soggy with batter falling off.Calamari was over battered and way overcooked. Salmon special was way overcooked. I have been here multiple times. It is "The Most Expensive Restaurant on Vashon." Location and caste make this place. The food is consistently terrible. A slimy portobello burger with a poor quality white bread too big margarine slathered bun was my first experience. Next was the nothing special fish tacos. Fish tacos are almost always delicious. My family and I have eaten here on a number of occasions. The food is generally bland and outdated - burgers, salads, sandwiches with unimaginative flavors. The fries are really delicious though - crispy and perfectly fried. Perhaps the flavors and ingredients are calibrated for the elder crowd on the island. Place was quaint and an interesting way a hardware store was turned into a restaurant. On a Saturday afternoon the place filled up quite quickly, despite it being in a small island of a town. We had the omelet, one fried chicken salad and one grilled chicken salad. Portions of the salad are good for those who came with an appetite. I had doubt, at first, not ordering the biscuits and gravy but decided to try something different. I must say that it did not disappoint. Grilled chicken was very good and not dry. My salad came with avocado which was even more awesome! One thing to consider would be to either make a reservation, if possible, or come early. One of the few places open for lunch on a weekend --inviting warm & artsy; fitting for Vashon Island. Peach Balenie was so so as was the habenero margarita. Basil martini awesome. Supreme (California style) hamburger very good with hot thin fries. Uninspiring fish tacos need something like mango lime salsa -as a bit dry. Fish part was good. Best thing was the banana cream pie just buy it and also take some home for later-- One of the top five desserts I have ever enjoyed. read more

Our firs time on Vashon, we drove into town looking for a place to grab a bite. After we parked, I looked over to The Hardware Store and noticed people sitting and eating. I told my husband, let's go eat there and he gave me a weird look. He thought it was a hardware store. Haha. Anyway... It was a gorgeous Sunday morning and we figured it would be packed. We walked in and people were waiting for tables, but the bar area had a bunch of open tables, so we sat there. My husband ordered a Bloody Mary and I got the Spicy Chix Sandwich on GF bun. Food - My sandwich was so-so. Not too flavorful, but it was huge and filling. The GF bun was sort of corn meal-ish, just okay. The fries were good - kind of McDonald's-ish, which is my fave - if you don't like them, you're lying to yourself. My husband ate them all, but I forgave him. He loved his Mary, especially the pickled carrot. Service - Great. I think that's why I gave a 4/5 stars since the food was just so-so. Everyone was friendly and service was quick despite it being a busy Sunday morning. Great overall experience. Nice, big restaurant. I would return again if we are in the area. read more

I like this place! The big open feel of the windows in the bar area was enticing and I enjoyed sitting in that area. Our service was great though it was really busy on a Tuesday afternoon. Housed in a historic building that lends the cozy restaurant/bar it's name the atmosphere is home-y and warm without leaning too far toward the "hipster" cafe vibe. Perhaps the price point (being a little high) keeps that element out but I for one appreciate it. I fell in love with Red Velvet cake here on my 18th birthday, and Tom Collins on my 24th.
