I'm actually very impressed. When Halal Guys opened in Downtown, I remember seeing how crazy the line was. That was years ago, and it's my first time trying it. It was worth it, it's really good. I had the beef gyro. They send the sauce on the side and don't underestimate their hot sauce. It's hot!!!!! (I love hot food. I put spice/hot sauce on everything). The rice is good with great consistency (I grew up eating rice every day, so it's important). My daughter had the chicken platter with falafel. The food was good but could have used more pita bread. Love a quick place like this with delicious bowls! The regular size was good for dinner and lunch the next day so that's nice (only a dollar more than small). Stopped by here on opening day and managed to snag the bogo ticket they were doing so I got two for the price of one! The staff were really kind and friendly. They were going through the line to give folks water so it seemed like they were really prepared for the day. They were also taking orders as quickly as they could but with masks and music, miscommunication happened at some points during the ordering process. During a non grand opening day, I assume it wouldn't be as busy or loud. The food was great! Definitely did not disappoint. The portion was large and the meat was cooked really well, and of course the sauce was the highlight! You can truly add as much as you want - no judgment from anyone. I'd suggest not being as generous with the red sauce though - even if you like spice, it's definitely not something anyone could handle in large quantities. Next time, I'd want to try their falafels for sure. So glad Porter Square has a Halal Guys now! read more

I was quite looking forward to Halal Guys opening a location right here in my neighborhood as its one of the many things I missed since I moved up here from NY. I had some reservations on the price knowing it most likely won't be like what we pay for when it was just served out of food trucks. If the food was awesome I had no qualms about paying for it, but honestly the food itself wasn't too spectacular either unfortunately. I'm mostly biased since I've eaten quite many different chicken/gyro over rice plates when I was living and working in NYC so I try not to be too harsh. Honestly my biggest pet peeve would be the portion size of the salad as it took up half of the container already before anything else gets added. The chicken seems not as flavorful as well, tasted more like rotisserie chicken and lacked in spices that you usually see. The gyro however I had no complaints definitely one of the better components in the platter. I tend not to like the white sauce too much but it's nice that the staff didn't just go ahead and spray it all over the plate before I asked her to go easy on the sauce haha. I think they'll do well at this location seeing there's really a lack of gyro/chicken rice variety here so it does fill a need but for me it'll just make me miss the NYC halal food carts even more at this rate. read more

I came here for the BOGO opening event. It was lit! The staff were very kind and provided water for people waiting in line in the hot sun. There was a DJ inside, balloons, and a ribbon cutting ceremony with the mayor of Cambridge. I got 2 of the combo platters which lasted me for 4 meals -- not bad for $11 per platter. I liked the chicken a lot more than the beef gyro. The chicken was fresh and juicy while the beef was a bit dry and didn't have as good of a flavor. The chicken is obviously being prepared very fresh. I would definitely just get a chicken plate next time. The salad seemed fresh and the pita bread and rice were good sides. The sauces were the usual Halal Guys sauces (I had forgotten how spicy that hot sauce was!). I'm happy to have them in Porter and am looking forward to stopping by again! read more

So I ordered delivery from the one on Stuart st and despite saying in all caps allergy to hummus / chick peas, they added hummus. This time around I did walk in order. No hummus this time horray! The vegtables are pretty standard and fresh, the chickens pretty good/seasoned. They are generous on the tahini, garlic aioli and hot sauce. I come here from time to time and usually enjoy the experience. Today my experience was the opposite. As I was going through the line I could tell that I was being mocked (in a different language) by two of the employees. Making comments and then directly laughing in my face. I could tell this was really happening because the woman at the cash register looked very uncomfortable and ashamed for her coworkers. Service a bit on the slower side despite the fact that they were fully staffed and not very busy. The chicken was tender, lettuce was fresh. I walked in thinking about my culinary experiences in Europe and found that they do a pretty good job in Porter Square as well. I ordered the Beef and Chicken Combo Gyro and was served a good sized portion for $11.99. They even have the huge slab of beef on a huge skewer behind the counter! Lots of veggies, pita bread, chicken and beef in a huge bowl with a choice of sauces. Hummus and falafel are also on the menu. I opted for taboule for a little bit more and readily enjoyed all of it. They could upgrade presentation from aluminum and plastic and service at the counter was partly engaging, partly surly based on who you were standing in front of at that moment. The food is good but not better than the NYC location. In NYC, the combo is lamb and chicken. They used to serve lamb at this location when they first opened but stopped doing that. Not sure why, maybe its not popular outside of NYC. In NYC, I don't normally have to get alot of white sauce and red sauce because the meat is so flavorful. The two stars is for the manager that works there. He seems like a nice guy and works hard but he seems unprofessional and I get a dirty feeling when he serves the food. All the staff wearing yellow polos looks so professional and clean. They are in uniform and they look well put together. This manager has his sleeves cuffed, he wears his hat backwards, he has on a mask but it just covering his chin exposing his face most of the time. His shirt is all wrinkly. He just looks very unprofessional and just got out of bed. The entire place looks clean and the staff looks clean and professional But the way this manager looks, it doesn't fit the store. Went in for lunch. Ordered the chicken and beef combo. Platter consist of small chopped pieces of meat, a lot of shredded lettuce, tomatoes (no dressing), bright orange rice and 3 very small slivers of pita. All extras are .50 to 1.00. Olives, tabuleh were my extras and they were piled on top of my other food. Tabuleh was literally chopped parsley with possibly 1-2 small pieces of onion- completely unseasoned. Chicken and beef have some kind of breading, are of indistinguishable taste. Only the slight darkness of the beef gives it away. Food was Not hot, Obviously re-heated . Hot sauce was hot, I'll give them that. A waste of money. read more

I go today with my mom and say let's split a regular (knowing the amount of rice normally given) and they didn't even give us enough for one. When I said something they pretend not to understand me. As we're going down the line of topping's mom says yes to olives but because I don't like them she asked that they put them on the side, we get to the counter and they charged us 3.49 for something that comes with the plate. I had lunch my daughter and I few days ago at this restaurant. Customer service was great, my daughter enjoyed her beef shawarma plate. I ordered a falafel wrap, although the taste of the Dany was good but the way they assembled the sandwich wasn't the best. A falafel wrap isn't like a gyro. The falafel wrap should made with pita bread and the falafel should go first on the bread not last then the toppings go after then the sauce. We've been to locations in California, NY, Las Vegas, New Jersey, and Virginia because we love Halal Guys. Unfortunately this location in Cambridge MA was the worst as far as taste, portion size and customer service. They were so cheap that they charge an extra $1 for parsley (not tabouleh) and 75 cents for a small packet of hot sauce (ketchup packet size). Wow we were surprised because all the other Halal Guys locations give the hot sauce packet for free (even 2). In addition, unlike other locations, they will not give military or uniformed personnel a discount. Not even 10% according to the manager. Very bad!!!! read more
