    Saffron pistachio ice cream

Our favorite Persian restaurant didn't survive the pandemic, so my friends and I have been searching for a worthy replacement. I'm glad we decided to give Cafe Vanak a try. The steady flow of dine-in customers, pick-up orders, and deliveries during our 1.5-2-hour meal speaks volumes about their food. Their menu is awesome-I always appreciate menus that include both photos and descriptions, making it easier to decide what my stomach is craving. This place is all about the food. We ordered Shirazi salad with pita, stuffed grape leaves, mixed koobideh, gheymeh stew with rice, and tahchin with chicken and eggplant. Everything was bursting with wonderful spices, the gheymeh stew was our absolute favorite. For drinks we had their black tea and the saffron tea which comes with rock sugar and saffron on a stirring stick. For dessert we had the most amazing pistachio ice cream and baklava. You can't go wrong with anything you order. The waitstaff were friendly, and although the atmosphere was more casual than I expected, it was clean and well-maintained.

One of (if not THE BEST) Beef Koobideh I've ever had. The beef was seasoned wonderfully and cooked to perfection. The meat juices nicely elevated the rice's flavor. The veggies had a delicious charred taste. Hospitable employees too, they gave me a free snack to-go. Easily worth the splurge, a great family-run establishment!

A wonderful taste of where I grew up An authentic, cozy, exquisite & full of love corner restaurant, Vanak Food delivers the very essence of Iran to Boston. A wonderfully put together menu offering all my favorites and more. You simply can't go wrong with Persian food. Especially when it's made with such love. You can tell that every dish is comprised of the best ingredients, all the exquisite spices & herbs that deliver the heavenly aroma it's known for. And of course made with all the love. To all Iranians in Boston, go to Cafe Vanak for a taste of home. And to all non Iranians, don't miss out. Thank you to the warm staff at Cafe Vanak for the lovely hospitality. We will be back very soon.

Cafe Vanak is one of my favorite restaurants to not only frequent, but also order takeout from. Although I live in downtown Boston, it is always worth it to drive out to Belmont to eat this food. I have brought many friends to this restaurant and every one of them have loved the experience. My favorite dish to order is the Vanic combination which has healthy portions of both beef/lamb koobideh, chicken koobideh, chicken, kebabs, and other pieces of well cut steak. The atmosphere very much reminds me of a family run grocery store/restaurant, which makes the experience so much better. You can tell that the family really cares about making the experience wonderful for all their customers. I love this place!

Came here for a friend's birthday around 4pm. We called in advance just to let them know we have about a group of 9. The table was ready when we got there which was perfect. Ordered the beef koobideh. Cooked to perfection. Every bite was juicy and tender. Sprinkled some saffron onto the rice for tinge of bitterness and sweetness. Vegetables were charred and easily to cut into. Service: fast and quick. Everything came out fresh. Definitely recommend this spot to everyone!

We came in with a large group late on a week day evening after an event and the Cafe Vanak staff were gracious enough to welcome our party. We ordered a large spread of food and drink with a few of the favorites below: * Tabouli Salad * Kashk Bademjan * Saffron Chicken with Barberry Rice * Grilled Salmon * Vanak Combo (we loved the grilled veggies on the side too!) We ended up getting most of our dessert to go from their dessert counter, and we particularly enjoyed the baklava (sold per piece) and the honey cake (sold by weight). They also had a selection of Persian ice creams in fun flavors like saffron pistachio, jasmine, Nutella, and more!

My teammate highly recommended me to try the Persian food here at cafe Vanak and it did not disappoint us. My hubby and I had lunch here last weekend and loved our meal. Hole in the wall kinda restaurant, super duper packed with lots of people. The service is quick and very approachable. We ordered the eggplant dip which was out of the world served with freshly baked lavash bread. We got the chicken koobedeh for main course served with flavoured yellow rice and grilled veggies. The meat was so tender it was melting in our mouth. No effort of chewing required. Must visit if you are in the Belmont area.

The restaurant is a decent size and I think they'd be able to accommodate larger parties with no issue. Only thing is, they don't do reservations & only walk-ins. We visited before the kitchen closed & ordered the following dishes: - Jahunger noodles - Meefen noodles - Kavap (lamb kebab skewers) - Hand-made Lamb Dumpling (7) - Not Your Average Honey Cake I had to try the Jahunger noodles again! When I ordered this for takeout, I really enjoyed the flavor but was skeptical about it because I couldn't believe how small the portion was... or if I got skimped because it was a delivery order? I feel like I did get a slightly bigger portion dining in vs. takeout but that could just be me! Anyways, I loved the chewiness of the noodles & the spice! The spice is subtle & hits you at the end of each bite. The Meefen noodles were my favorite. We were warned by our server that this was a spicier dish but luckily, we LOVE spicy. Yeah, it's definitely more spicy than anything else we ordered but I didn't find it to be that spicy. LOVED THE FLAVOR for this dish! I liked that it was spicy but didn't have a bitter note like how Szechuan mala dishes can be with the peppercorn. The sauce tasted like it was made with chili bean sauce & sweet bean paste. Enjoyed the noodles a lot too! Super bouncy and very similar to udon noodles. The kavap lamb skewer kebabs were cooked well. Didn't taste gamey at all & felt like they were seasoned well. Very strong in cumin flavor. The hand-made lamb dumplings was a dish I personally could do without. I don't typically like when dumplings are wrapped this way and when we received this dish, the dumplings were cold. I don't enjoy cold food, plus the filling was very bland. Lastly, we had the Not Your Average Honey Cake for dessert. This was so good! I'm honestly not even a cake person usually but after seeing so many great reviews about it, I had to try it. It's not too sweet & was perfectly moist. Overall, the food was more or less solid! I think next time I won't be ordering appetizers... I feel like they're expensive for what you get here unfortunately & not worth it. $15 for 3 tiny lamb skewers is insane & $13 for lamb dumplings that were cold and bland. I did enjoy the noodle dishes & the honey cake though! We don't mind prices of food if the dishes are good. The appetizers are not worth it, in my opinion. Service: It was meh. My guess is our server's name is Elden, as noted on the receipt? He was a taller individual who just looked like he didn't want to be there. Originally, he had us wait a few minutes to prep the table and when he brought us to the table, it had just been cleaned. I go to sit down & immediately he goes "No!", with no explanation for why. He proceeded to move all the tables around, remove the extra chairs aggressively, and place the utensils and napkins. Throughout the meal, he was just staring at us to see if we had finished or were finishing up. Felt super rushed essentially. I understand we came close to kitchen close time but we ordered quickly & left before restaurant closing time. I thought it was interesting though because many of the tables around us arrived and ordered just before us or a minute after us & by the time we left, people were still eating... Lots of attitude & many of our interactions with him (for water, etc), he was nonverbal but his face was loud! Very passive aggressive from start to finish. So, I didn't particularly like that. And not to mention, we paid for the bill while we were still eating & after he took the bill and tip (20% cash), he was much happier + nicer to us... too funny. Overall rating: Food- 3.8-4/5 Service- 1/5 Likely won't be back for a while.

For the food, we got the tuna kimbap, Seoul toppoki, and bulgogi hot pot for two. Everything was SO good. The ingredients were fresh and the food was flavorful (sweet from the bulgogi, savory from the mushrooms, spicy from the toppoki sauce, salty from the tuna, and sour from the pickled vegetables). The price for the portion size was a great value and we ended the night feeling very full and even had to pack up an entire container of the hotpot for two that we didn't finish. We ordered the cheese topokki (soft rice cake, fish cake, vegetable, & mozzarella in Korean spicy sauce) & the beef bulgogi bowl (fried marinated beef, vegetables, steamed rice & side of soup). The cheese topokki was just as good as we remembered - chewy, flavorful, comforting, & a little bit weird. The cheese was poorly distributed, but it was still very tasty. The beef bulgogi bowl was really underwhelming. Firstly, it was very little food. We were promised vegetables, but there were only a few scarce onions & zucchini pieces mixed in. It was also dry. It was devoid of moisture & sauce, so we added some from the fridge at home. The side of soup was a joke. It filled only about 2/3 of the container & looked so sad, we wondered if it was the sauce that we we so desperately needed. Nope, just a meager amount of watered down miso soup. So the conclusion - great topokki, sub-par bulgogi, non-existent soup.

The service is always spot on, even when they get busy during the weekend brunch rush. (You should count on needing a reservation at those times.) The french toast on its own is custardy and delicious (unlike some places that just feel like dry bread), but the roasted bananas along with the buttery caramel and pecans take it to the next level. The fries are also the platonic ideal of a french fry that always surprise us: crispy, not greasy, and well seasoned, while still having a fluffy center. I often get the shakshuka or the aleppo-style eggs for my main, which are both delicious, veggie-forward, and filling. There are lots of rustic-looking tables, which give it a sort of homey feel, and some tables can fit 12+, so they can definitely accommodate large groups. My colleagues always get something different, but I get the same thing every time: the grilled boneless pork shoulder and it is so good. The pork shoulder is a bit fatty and comes out juicy and flavorful from the grill - droolworthy. It comes with sauerkraut, but it's not your typical sauerkraut; it's more like a mild slaw with just enough acid to cut through the fatty pork. Also comes with your choice of side and sauce. The garlic toom is the only option in my opinion (of course, they have others), but get ready to have kickin' breath for the rest of the day. Others have gotten the lamb tongue, lentil soup, falafel, beef shawarma, borscht, pelmeni, eggplant rolls, and they have all been hits. Don't think I would ever come out of my way to this restaurant if I didn't know about it, but it's totally worth the trip!

But what makes it so special to me now is always the food. And for what they already offer to start, that states quite a bit to what I think of this place. There are many Persian/Middle Eastern fare in this area and most serve the usual so nothing seems to really stand out. That is, at least, until you order their Jujeh Kabob (grilled Cornish hen). Sounds simple, looks simple, but the depth of flavor and the tonguegasmic moments you have partaking of the dish changes their level in the culinary game in the area. It was so good, so so good, I felt completely blown away. I raved about it to Rose, who then told the chef-owner, and then told her I'd be back the next day just to try it again.
