    Shrimp Salad

Great place to meet friends. The food was great! We both got the Shrimp Salad. There was one kebab with four or five shrimp on it over a bit of mixed greens with a delicious citrus vinaigrette. It look like the type of place now. Have a great home cooking and great prices.

We met another couple for dinner. It was our first visit. Our friends had eaten here the night before and highly recommended it. We went on the Saturday of the restaurants soft opening. The place was hopping but the staff was calm and organized. We were greeted with smiles and seated promptly at a booth. Our servers name was Don. He had multiple tables to wait on but he was attentive to us. He informed us that the kitchen had many orders to fill and we might need to wait longer than expected for our meal. We understood and appreciated his honesty. We told Don that we were not in a hurry. There are three tv's in the immediate dining area. Several decorations of fish are mounted along the booths. Three high top tables are placed against the wall that is decorated with framed photographs of various people showcasing their catch. The owner stopped at various tables to ask if customers were pleased with their food. She actually bused our table when we finished our meal with a smile on her face. Our table ordered the two meat combo plate. Choices include turkey, pulled pork, chicken or beef and choice of two side. Also ordered was the pulled pork plate which includes two sides. We opted for side salads, roasted corn, mac 'n cheese and a sweet potato. Everything was delicious! The portions are large and priced very reasonably. There is not a full bar but beer & wine are available. I ordered a glass of red wine priced at $6.00. It was a nice pour. There was a continuous stream of people coming thru the door. I heard Don inform a nearby table that the kitchen had run out of baked potatoes. The temperature of the room felt a bit warm and the women's bathroom needed some tidying but I understand the restaurant was filled to capacity. I have no doubt these kinks will work themselves out for the better. We all had a very enjoyable evening and plan to return very soon. I highly recommend Grill at Lake Jackson. The view is beautiful.

Friday evening just before dinner. Place was somewhat busy. Walking to the door was a distance esp since I'm dealing with recovery from a broken leg. But the place was clean. Everyone was friendly and inviting. Ordered rib and beef (didn't realize it was sliced roast beef) but the food was good. Came out in a timely manner also. Hopefully they continue the quality over time.

The whole experience really wasn't very pleasant. 5 employees saw us waiting to be seated, we could see plenty of tables, and it still took too long before we were greeted, let alone seated. When the waitress took our order, she deleted one of them and had to ask a 3rd time what it was we wanted. Soup and salad were brought at the same time for one person, even though the waitress even said the salad normally comes out with the meal. We did not enjoy the corn fritters, I know every place makes them differently but they weren't good here. My burger was undercooked, the pulled pork was cold, and none of the food was seasoned. I had the "Swiss burger" and it came with mushrooms. As you can see from the menu, there's no description so you don't know what comes in your food. My father in law is allergic to mushrooms, they need to be stated on the menu. This used to be Sonny's bbq, the weren't very good either. The place looked basically the same, there was a fresh coat of paint, some fishing pictures on the wall and fish statues (I don't understand the theming other than it being by a lake?). The waitress never asked if we wanted a refill on our drinks, another employee brought boxes and we asked her for the check because we hadn't seen our waitress in a while and the girl said she's not a waitress so she can't get it for us and walked away. Definitely won't be back.

We had quite a wait for the food but once we tasted it, we realized it takes time to get that level of quality food. The wait was the only reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5. It took several visits to Oksumi for me to realize just how special a place it is. Oh, make no…read moremistake, I knew that I liked it from the first visit, but it took a bit of reflection, and a bit of exploring the menu, for Oksumi's charm to really unfold, before me. Read other reviews, and the phrase "nothing fancy" keeps appearing. Another reviewer calls it "simple" and "to the point." This, right here, is the soul of Oksumi. It isn't a restaurant using the idea of ramen as a canvas for the ego of a chef looking to reinvent the dish. It is a ramenya, and its menu is a love letter to ramen. It does not need to uplift or reinvent ramen, because ramen is already perfect, as it is. One does not taste ego in Oksumi's dishes; one tastes respect, care, craftsmanship, and balance. Perhaps most importantly, one tastes every ingredient, and one tastes the role that every ingredient plays in the whole of one's ramen experience. As I explored the menu, as I tasted each element in my bowl, I found myself, again and again, noticing the quality of each element I tasted. The karaage is crisp, juicy inside, and its notes of melting fat aren't lost, even against a spicier base. The tonkotsu is silky upon the tongue, the shio clean but not at all simple, a subtle medley of salt, chicken, and the transparency needed to let the more delicate elements like the cilantro and bean sprouts express themselves, even as the fresh garlic and bonito express themselves more assertively. Oksumi's care and attention to balance encourages one to see these simple, elemental forms of ramen not as "basic" in the slightest, but as works of art expressed in their own whitespace. Approach the shio here not with the need for every space to be filled. This dish is a culinary Gokui no Uta. If you think there is something, there is nothing; if you think there is nothing, there is something. Over a fragile moment with calamari, in which I reflected that I had never once tasted a rubbery or greasy piece of squid at Oksumi, and in fact, had never tasted a *better* piece of squid, not even in my years on the California coast, it really came home for me. Oksumi is a place in which I stopped consuming, and started appreciating the "something-there." I wandered the menu, from tonkotsu black garlic (a flavor hurricane) to simple shio and the robustness of vegetarian Nagoya-style ramen, and let myself dissolve into the moment, into the Kai, the "something-there" that manifests when one's mind stops playing with its expectations and assumptions, and simply experiences. My happiest moments, as a diner, happen when a meal silences my unreasonable, arrogant, chattering mind, and brings me to a lighted door of experience somewhere between the late Leonard Cohen's semi-contrition and the late Anthony Bourdain's quiet confessionals in moments of being a stranger at a table. Again and again, I return to Oksumi, to understand what ramen *is*, and to humble my difficult, noisy mind to a level of quiet that can appreciate the Kai, the "something-there" that appears only when the mind is still, quiet, and allows itself to experience without a commentary track of judgment. Calling Oksumi "simple" is the highest praise one can pay it. Its ramen does not *need* adornment because its ramen is as adorned as ramen might ever need to be. Your attention is the substrate upon which Oksumi's elemental, straightforward ramen expresses itself. This place is an underrated treasure.

I traversed inside to place my order as there didn't seem to be service at that time. The waitress seemed off and kept making me wait while she asked the bar crowd who else wanted a drink. I waited and waited. Finally she took my order. I asked for the nachos and a draught beer. She seemed surprised I ordered food. She kept telling me I needed to order chicken or steak. I indicated that I didn't need those add one and was good with the refried beans listed on the menu. I told her I was sitting on the corner outside. That corner is where I sat, for more than half an hour, gasping for air. I was entertained by the music and some people dancing to the tunes. I really wanted my beer which never came. Finally my nachos arrived. They had a nice presentation but no beans. They were dropped at the table as she sped away. I tried to ask for my beer but she never hesitated long enough nor emerged to check on me. My nachos was more of chips and cheese with a lettuce salad on top. I was thankful for the jalepeno slices and made the best of it. After an hour I went inside to pay. The waitress ignored me again. When I finally got the bill it included the illusion beer that was never served. When I questioned it the waitress got frustrated and handed my ticket to an apologetic younger guy. I don't think wild horses could drag me back to this bar. Maybe if some friends were only willing to come hear the music but not venture inside... it's pretty sad as the music was great!

We ordered the scallops, key lime chipotle shrimp flatbread, hog wings, tuna tartare, and the montaditos (basically creative little bruschetta). Everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. The scallops were perfectly cooked on a bed of risotto, the tuna had a surprising but delicious hit of jalapeño, and each montadito - from prosciutto and manchego to a creamy goat cheese and fig combo - was spot on. The wine list is thoughtfully curated, although they were out of several bottles we tried to order, which was a bit disappointing. Our friends struck out on two bottles of red before they found one they actually had available. It's a little surprising to be that unprepared for a Saturday night. The vibe of the place is casual but stylish, with a fun mix of tables, sofas, and mismatched furniture that gives it a relaxed neighborhood feel. The main downside? The service. Our server started out attentive, but then basically disappeared - empty water glasses, no check-ins, and we ended up having to hunt her down for the bill after waiting 15 minutes. Most tapas are around $20 and larger plates like the skirt steak are closer to $40. For two couples, we spent about $160 per couple with tip - a reasonable price for two bottles of wine and food this darn good. Did I mention the scallops? Bottom line: the food is phenomenal and the vibe is great . The wine inventory and service are weak spots - which is too bad, because UnWINEd could have become a favorite.

And in Sebring, that means you walk into the cool Irish pub on the circle and soak it all in. The interior alone makes it worth the visit. Dark wood, warm lighting, that cozy tucked-away pub feel that makes you forget you are in the middle of Florida. It feels transported. It is one of those places in Sebring that you just have to see because it is so unexpectedly cool inside. Service was great. I was there for a quick in and out, so I sat at the bar and kept it simple with a chicken Caesar salad. Nothing fancy. For the price, it was very fair, and the flavor held up. No complaints. It did exactly what it needed to do, which was give me a solid meal in a comfortable setting without overcomplicating things. Now let's talk about Sebring itself. Sebring is one of those towns in the middle of nowhere Florida where you find yourself thinking, "I wonder what it would be like to live here?" while also scratching your head a little. It reminds me of The Villages before The Villages became The Villages. There is a concept there. It is adorable. It is charming. And most of the time, it is very, very quiet. Personally, I would go stir crazy living there full time. But I can absolutely see the appeal. And to be fair, Sebring is not always sleepy. It comes alive during major events like the legendary 12 Hours of Sebring at Sebring International Raceway, which draws racing fans from all over the world. There is also the Sebring Soda Festival, the Highlands County Fair, and various car shows and seasonal events that suddenly flood the town with energy. During those times, I imagine the entire vibe shifts. If I were to come back, it would be for one of those big events or for some serious antique shopping, because that is where this area quietly shines. Gavaghans fits perfectly into that Sebring personality. Cozy. A little unexpected. Solid. Worth stepping into. Even if you are not an Irish pub person, it is one of those spots that makes you think, okay... I get it.
