My entire life, this place has hung in the background of my mind. Having never been there, I finally bit the bullet at 48 years old. When I walked in on thanksgiving day, it wasn't as busy as I thought it would be, but it was full of regulars having a great old time with a full turkey buffet, complimentary even to us! A perfect bar, for a perfectly timed drink during the holiday season. One of my guilty pleasures is going into dive bars on Christmas Eve. This night hit both perfectly. You will find the older family members that have gathered together for a drink reminiscing. You find the younger bothers,sisters,cousins getting together and comparing stories. Then you have those of us with very few or nonexistent family members. Throw in one very seasoned bartender and that mixes into and amazing evening. It's your friendly neighborhood dive bar, not crowded on a Saturday night, nothing too noteworthy, none of your typical game offerings (ie darts/shuffleboard), but they do have one golf arcade game (Golden Tee PGA Tour), a snack vending machine, lotto, and an atm machine. Oh yes, it's cash only at the bar. They play random music (rock, country, pop, etc.). Drinks are okay, we got standard cocktails, and although there was enough alcohol, the flavors were not great. The service was fine though. Overall, the prices are surprisingly low for Napa, and the bartenders are attentive. There was an excellent food truck in the parking lot with pretty tasty burritos. Not sure if it's there all the time. Nice parking lot. Drinks were cheap. Service was good. I see very mixed reviews, and that is very understandable. Obviously, this is a dive bar. It's probably OK for people who live in the area and understand the vibe. If you're not a local and are visiting the area as I am, I would recommend against going there later in the evening. Maybe it's fine earlier. I don't know. Maybe it's spectacular earlier, or if you're a local. The bartender was friendly, but it is cash only, and, running a tab seemed like somewhat of a foreign concept. Having to use cash also make many people have to use the on-site ATM and waste a drink's worth of money on ATM fees. That alone tainted it somewhat for me, so take my assessment with that in mind. If a cash only bar, which has an issue with running a tab seems normal to you, then this could be your place. Frankly, it didn't feel really safe there, which may or may not have been an accurate or fair assessment, but it just has a rough feel late overall. It's unfortunate, as there is not much open late in Napa. read more

Now, I am a bloodhound when it comes to dive bars. I can sniff the scent of stale beer, the aroma of cheap booze and the perfume of cigarette smoke while on a passing train - or in this case, our rental car. We were going 70 mph on the freeway coming back from Bistro Jeanty our very first night in town, when my nostril flared like Wolverine and my senses began to tingle. I saw what looked like the making of a sign, hidden by the tree line running parallel to Route 29S. "Get off the next exit! I think I found one," I yelled. We had not twenty minutes ago spoken about the non-existence of bars in Napa. Coming to wine country for years, my gal had never seen one. I tell ya, drop me on an island, a mountain, shit, drop me in Afghanistan and I'll find the dive bar. Behold, not five minutes later we arrived in the parking lot of The Green Door, a local dive bar for the people that actually WORK in Napa. Now, I am dating myself here but look up Behind the Green Door. It was a soft-core porn film made in the early seventies. One that made a HUGE impression on me as a young teen because of its visual reference in the Burt Reyonld's movie The Cannonball Run. I have seen that movie dozens of times and have watched the opening sequence of Behind the Green Door cut off just as it was about to get nasty. This pornographic film carried with it a certain level of sexual mystique because I never got to see it. But I always wanted to know what was behind the green door, and now I know. It's a cool ass dive bar. I was just as erect by the finding as I was itching for a bourbon break after a long day of wine. Upon entering you get the feel of a salt of the earth, country dive bar. Coming To America was playing on the television screen above one end of the bar, and Dickey Betts was singing through the jukebox at the other. But wait, is that smoke I see rising from the hands of the patrons?! Holy shit, we had hit pay dirt! People were casually lighting up everywhere; it was like Vegas. F'ing score. We took two seats at the bar, ordered our whiskeys and inquired with the bartender as to how they were able to get around the state law. Apparently if a bar is owner-operated, that is if all the employees have part ownership and they all agree to allow it, the state has no right to interfere. Loop hole, bitches! I finally found one to work with me and not against me. We were in heaven and indulged and took delight in being the only tourists in the place. Many whiskeys and many cigarettes later we left, but only because I knew I was coming back the following night. Never take a good thing for granted. read more

When you think of Napa, what are the first words that pop in your mind? Pretentious? Full-Of-Winos? Expensive? Well let this place de-bunk ALL those myths! This place is pretty much the opposite of all the misconceptions about Napa. It's dive-y, casual, rowdy. It's like the fun-loving-alter-ego-that's-been-exiled-to-the-boondocks-to-go-in-hiding to Napa's more elitist, pretentious bars downtown. It's the kind of establishment that I can see Guy Fieri randomly popping in to just for a quick drink or pit stop to Flavortown. It's the kind of establishment that doesn't care if you're a waiter, or the owner of the restaurant it's all good in this neighborhood. I guess the copious amounts of alcohol helps too... I was brought here unexpectedly by a friend. I was a little bit mortified when I found out this was the, "cool poppin' little spot no one knows about." I've always seen the green sign on the side of the highway on the way back from high school, and it wasn't until then that I went inside. The decor was typical of any regular dive bar, there was a jukebox, a couple of sticky tables, sticky floors, and a vending machine that vends those American Spirits. Don't come dressed to impress. Just come as you are, as a friend, as an old enemy, come dowsed in mud, soaked in bleach, as a trend, as a friend, as an old memoria, memoria... Speaking of Nirvana, you'd hear an eclectic mix of music here. Sometimes there's a live band, and at times its at the mercy of whoever has the quarters for the jukebox. But let's be real here, you don't go to The Green Door for the music, you come for the drinks and stay for the entertaining local flavor. The drinks are strong. I ordered my go-to gin and tonic. I kid you not, it was gin, with the tiny-est splash of tonic, and small wedge of lime. It was great, what a big bang for my buck. Come here for the local flavor and see what's Napa's really like beyond the pages of Bon Apetit or Sunset magazine. We're not always classy, we have our sloppy days too (and here's where we go on those days.) I'd go here again for the kicks and giggles... or if I was having a Don Draper melt down (I'm hoping that won't come for another thirty some odd years.) Until then Green Door. As a man of a certain, off-white color and conspicuously slanty eyes, I'm no stranger to joking with my friends about walking into a bar and having everything stop; the record stylus scratches to a halt, a barfight wherein a man is being slid down the bartop momentarily ceases, and the bartender overflows a beer in amazement as we walk in. But undeterred, I walked up to the bar and ordered a Bud, a PBR for my friend, and asked WTF is up with the Giants. Everything was cool. It's a smoking bar, but my neighborhood joint is the Geary Club, so I'm used to smoked out bars. As such, this didn't really bother me, but I can see how it could bother some. The beer is cheap... and it should be. Cash only. The company is very familiar with each other, so be cool. We stopped here after a nice dinner on a Saturday night(10/23/10). There were 10 people in our party - 5 couples. There were maybe a dozen or so people in the bar when we arrived (10pm ish??). Well, the husbands went up to the bar, were watching baseball, and the wives went and sat at a table near the juke box. Everything was fine. The old guy performing his "live music" was ok. We were entertained watching some older folks perform their dance moves. We had just texted the hubbies, telling them we were ready for the next round.......... and all of a sudden a good-sized guy walks in, stands conspicuously in the middle of the bar, takes off his red bandana, spends about a full minute folding it while he glares around the bar, sticks it in his back pocket - carefully making sure it's hanging out where it can be seen, and then he proceeds to the bar. WHAT????? What just happened? Are they filming a movie?? It was bizarre. It was SO obvious that he was making some kind of point of flashing his "colors". More people had filtered in from the time we first got there, and the whole atmosphere kind of changed. When he did that there was a different current going through the place. Nothing "happened" when we were there, but we promptly left. We weren't going to hang around to see if it would. Sorry, Green Door. I missed the warning in the Napa tourism brochures about there being a gang presence after 10pm!!! It was completely bizarre & creepy. read more

All I can say is that this place makes me happy! Take it for the brilliant little dive bar it is and you will love it too. Everyone there is really friendly and the one man band is amazing. It's actually not really worht going unless the one man band is there b/c it's just not as fun. The cool things about this place is that it isn't crazy, loud and crowded like some other bars are in town. Waiting a long time for a drink or to use the bathroom is never fun and you don't have to worry about that here. The one-man band playing can be entertaining and when you've had a few, you'll actually dance to his limited song list. The drinks are strong (huge plus!) and the bartenders are pretty nice. The downfall of this place is that they allow people to smoke inside. Remember those days in California? Going home and reeking of smoke - its in your hair, clothes, etc. And sometimes you get a smoker's voice upon waking up in the morning - no bueno. Not my favorite at all. read more

I spent almost 4 months in & around wine country. It wasn't until my last few days that I FINALLY entered The Green Door. I'll tell ya, I wish I'd've popped in the 1st time I noticed it while driving by. It's a chill, relaxed, down to earth, come as you are, dive-type establishment. Mo (behind the bar) was fantastic! The bar tender last night was incredibly unprofessional and rude. My girlfriend ordered a drink and ordered a water for me. It was clear that the bartender was only concerned about her tip because she not only took forever to bring me a water, but also thought it was necessary to deliver a lecture about drunk people being in a bar. We were looking for somewhere cheap since we'd been spending so much in Napa and we sure found it. I mean, I really have nothing horrible to say about this place. We didn't experience anything like some of the other people have posted, it was a fun atmosphere during the game, and yes, the big "Hulk Hand" was in the bar ready to be used (too bad the Giants lost).
