The new people who have bought this business in Jan 2025 are not as capable of framing needlework as Mohsen was. He had an excellent eye for color and frame size to complement needlework. The piece they completed in January is falling out of the frame. This piece, submitted to the Orange County Fair,was marked down to an honorable mention because the center of the needlework was loose. The second needlework had to be redone, as the lacing to the mounting board was loose, and the frame overlapped the needlework. I had to show them how to lace the needlework for tautness AND explain that the frame should NEVER cover the needlework. It took several extra months to get the reframe back. I have found a new framer. read more

I spoke to several other frame builders who said they couldn't accommodate my project the way I wanted it, but then thankfully I found the Great Frame Up. Mohsen worked with me every step of the way. I came to him with just a creative vision in my head and the non-standard dimensions I wanted and he executed it perfectly. I am so pleased with the finished products. I drove down from Long Beach and hand-picked out all the materials with Mohsen's expert guidance. The job was done in record time and Mohsen was so delightful to work with. The materials are high quality and the craftsmanship is exquisite. We only had one small hiccup - we needed to take the frames back to have the photos dry-mounted because we live close to the water and the photos started to curl at the edges a bit from humidity, but it was a very easy fix and Mohsen took care of it for us promptly. The beautiful finished products are now hanging proudly in our family room and I couldn't be happier. I noticed they also carry a wide range of different materials across an array of price points. Brought in a frame to have a jersey matted to it. when we dropped off the frame it was in perfect condition. When we got the matting complete, the frame had been pulled and twisted in each corner so that there was a sharp edge of wood exposed in each corner. We asked the gentleman at the shop about it and he said it came that way and he was not responsible for the frame. Pretty poor excuse and shabby final result. Had to peel the paper off the back of the frame and gently wedge the frame back into shape so that the edges would not be exposed from the front. Pretty simple to do and could have been done by the shop owner instead of giving us back a shabby matted frame. read more

I recently got into collecting art and was informed that I should really have UV protective glass to prevent photobleaching. My default response was to go to Michael's and get a custom cut piece there. Then my Yelpy senses kicked in and I searched for other places in the area. The Great Frame Up could cut the same dimensions of the same UV protection for a little less than half the cost of Michael's. And this guy is a professional! How could I say no to this? I came in and basically told him that I'm a complete noob and am just starting out. He gave me honest opinions about custom framing, UV glass, and matting. He said that the only thing he's willing to compromise with is the framing itself (with respect to buying it somewhere else cheaper) - nice to know he's willing to save me even more money! He also informed me of the importance of acid-free backboards (something I hadn't considered). He took the time to walk me through the process and helped me understand a bit more about framing. To give you an idea of pricing: I had a 12"x12" piece that needed custom cut UV glass, matting, and a new acid-free backboard and it only cost $36.81 (without tax) - ridiculously cheaper than what it would cost at Michael''s! The way the pricing works is that there's a standard piece of glass and any artwork that falls into that size gets charged the same. Once the artwork is bigger than the standard piece, the price gets bumped up. It only took him a few days to get two of my pieces done (cut glass, matting, and acid-free backboards). He called promptly to let me know that they were done. Both pieces are now up on my walls and I couldn't be happier! He really does a great job and is a master at his craft. I have a few more pieces I'll need him to do (for now) - can't wait to go back! read more

Can I just say, Mohsen is a framing guru! I brought in 2 paintings that I had picked up with my wife from a Filipino arts and trade store, and they were in pretty sad shape. The first one had been leaned against the corner of another painting and as a result, had developed an indentation in the middle of the painting, so it needed to be re-stretched. The other was just badly mounted by the artist and needed to be re-stretched and actually required to have some extra canvas added to it so that it could be placed onto a new stretcher frame just to be able to frame it. Mohsen was extremely patient while helping me pick out frames, did a great job finding frame colors that complemented the art AND stayed within my budget, and finally, explained in detail the work that needed to be done to restore and enhance the pieces. Both Aaron Brothers and Michaels asked for almost $400-$500 for EACH painting. Are you kidding?!? TGFU was able to do it for less than HALF that. Like all the previous reviewers have said, framing in general isn't cheap, but they do 5-star quality work here. Mohsen promised the paintings within 2 weeks as the shop was pretty busy, plus I told him that I wasn't in any rush, and yet he was able to finish them a couple days early. I would most definitely recommend TGFU for any and all of your framing needs. read more

Framing isn't cheap, but if it's done well by a local business owner, I have no problem paying the extra buck. The Great Frame Up is located in the same center as 99 Ranch Market. It's been there for 20 years or so. I remember coming there as a youngin wanting to frame my old Phantom of the Opera poster, and Mohsin (the owner) was happy to help. Well, Mohsin is still there, beautifully framing anything from my cheap museum posters (brought in a couple of weeks ago) to very large art murals. Another note, they offer discounted rates on "do it yourself framing," where they supply you with supplies and know-how, and you frame your own stuff right in the store. Makes a fun project with your kids (or alone) if you have the time. I actually framed a bunch of pictures with my dad at a young age, which was pretty cool. Lastly, Mohsen is pleasant and knowledgeable. He works with your ideas, while providing you with suggestions. I definitely recommend getting anything framed there. Why does custom framing cost so much? It's as if the wood were weather treated with Bald Eagle tears and the matting were made of stretched whale skin. That being said, you get what you pay for at "The Great Frame Up." Pretty much everything that comes out of this place is going to be custom, so don't expect to get some prefabricated piece of plywood that you would find at Walmart, Target, Kmart, etc... It's a nice little shop and the owner was very welcoming. He took his time in showing me a variety of different options that he felt would accent my particular artwork. When the work was ready to be picked up (sooner than the original estimate I might add) he just shot me a quick email. Couldn't have been more convenient. The work he did also looked fantastic. I purchased a poster for my husband that was a scratch off map of the world (we scratch off the destinations we have traveled to together) and needed to be handled with care. I dropped it off here after finding this place on Yelp. They honored the $50 off coupon and said not to worry - they would handle the poster with care as not to scratch the poster during the framing process. I said I wanted it in 2 days and the man who helped me said that it shouldn't be a problem. They called me a couple days later to say it was ready and I picked up the newly framed poster. I wanted to frame a 42x30 inch poster, and I could tell that the gentlemen who helped me frame my poster are true artists. they know the technical side of their craft, and they helped me display my poster with the artistic expression I wanted. Last night, I went to pick up the panoramic I had framed. I was running behind schedule and didn't think I'd be able to make it before they closed at 7 pm. At 6:55, I called the shop and told them I was approximately 5 minutes away and asked if they would wait for me. The man I spoke with on the phone confirmed on his initiative that the panoramic was in fact ready to go and then promised to wait for me. I was pretty impressed because let's be honest, who wants to stay late just because someone else is running late, especially when that person could just come during business hours on another day? When I arrive at the shop at 7:01, my panoramic was ready and waiting for me. They did a beautiful job, and my boyfriend was thrilled - it looked great and went well with his framed diploma. I bought a cool print online the other day and had these guys frame it for me. I just moved to SoCal from Cambridge, MA and needed some of my photos framed for an art show. The problem was, I needed them done in 2 days or less. After all, I had a deadline and I was running out of options. DJ was accommodating, helpful, reasonable and sincere. He was able to look at the project I was trying to frame and offer me the best solutions. He never condescended to me OR made me feel that I was overspending on the project. -The prices are premium compared to what I'm used to spending back in Boston, but very worth it. When DJ was finishing up with my order he offered to hang the pieces in his shop if I didn't sell them at the show. Wow, I just thought that was really cool and I took some of business cards to promote him if anyone inquired about who did my framing. You will not be disappointed if you go in to this store. He suggested beautiful frames and proper matting-size to bring out the best in each image. He seems to care more about the final product turning out well than about up-selling the highest price frame or option. He was very kind and a pleasure to work with. Their website recommends not going by in the lunchtime window because of scarce parking, which I am glad they did. It can get very busy over there!
