Everything was seasoned perfectly, and all food was warm and fresh. Wow! This place is amazing! Great home cooked food! I enjoyed the fish over rice with mashed potatoes and their famous southern greens! And the cornbread is fresh and delicious! This was highly frustrating and we were actually in the process of requesting a refund when they finally borough out our food. My suggestion would not be to order in advance. Seems that the business is unable to process these and gets backed up quickly. It would be better to go in and order your food as you'll get it sooner. Pros: There are so many pros to this soul food bistro. But I guess I can start by saying that this is the best soul food I've had since living in Houston. The oxtails were extremely tender, well seasoned, and fall off the bone. The candied were sweet but not overly sweet. You could definitely taste the actual yam/sweet potato without the overbearing taste of sugar and cinnamon. While I am not a fan of "over the stove" type macaroni. This was not as bad as I thought it would be. The macaroni was cheesy, seasoned, and creamy. The perfect combination. Finally, let's talk about the boudin eggrolls. They were also amazing! Spicy, but not to the point where the spicy lasts extremely long. Because the dipping sauce was sweet and creamy, it was the perfect pair to tackle the spice. In Houston for a convention, 7 of us travelled 35 minutes to try this restaurant which was recommended by various online reviews of what's best in Houston (not to mention we took 2 Ubers costing $48 each). Our first indication that something wasn't right was when we entered the Chevron gas station where the restaurant is located. It looked closed but it wasn't. When we entered the restaurant we were told that we could only have what was in the steam tables and they only had baked chicken and catfish left. That was true, but there was only enough for 2 people and we were 7. Additionally, the food was old, cold and the gumbo unrecognizable. The young girl at the counter offered no suggestions just kept saying "this is all we have left." I mentioned that their website clearly stated to arrive before 7pm to place "cooked to order food" and she said "that's because we shut down the stoves at 7." However, we arrived before that time. And, what made it worse is that no one in charge came from the back to offer an explanation or apologize. It seems that what my party faced was business as usual. So, without any food, the 7 of us had to return back to our hotel, spending another $48, hungry and frustrated. Because we're from out of town, we were not familiar with the ordering style.
