I am definitely a fan of the Grasshopper. I love this place for lunch. A great menu with a wide variety of dishes from Irish-American to italian-American to traditional American Pub food. I have been here a couple times! When I usually go out for drinks I just end up eating a burger. The first time I received my burger I asked for it well done and it was only medium. It was still good and the food tastes very fresh. Every other time I have been my food has been perfectly made nothing wrong with it at all. If you are going for the drinks.. Which you must.. They have incredibly priced drinks, and it's always a great pour as well. This would be the spot for a food/cheap drinks. As for the atmosphere it can be crowded but everyone is so friendly at this location. You can see that the waitresses have regulars that come in, they talk and chat it's really nice to see that at such a crowded place. Now this isn't like crazy crowded at least the times I have gone. I love the Grasshopper. Never had a bad time there. It is an old fashion Irish bar. If you don't believe me read the one review by the lady who was upset about her beers being flat and the bartender/manager chugs the beer down at her table when she complained and said, "doesn't taste flat to me"! Now leave!! Imagine if this person went to famous McSorley's in the city where their motto is "Be nice or be gone" before that one was "Good Ale, Raw Onions and No Ladies". So if you want a Cheesecake Factory version of an Irish Bar this place is not for you. read more

This is a nice local bar and restaurant with really great space to sit and relax with a nice varied menu and the service is great. Wonderful jukebox. Serving size requires a "doggie bag". Nice local people. Enjoy and relax, that's why we come to Grasshoppers. read more

Unimpressive and uninspired. This is a place that time forgot. While an old school Jersey institution, The Grasshopper felt just that--old. Aside from a sprinkling of young customers, the average age was north of 60. The menu may just be as old and is in definite need of a facelift. Even the "specials" on a xerox insert felt like part of a regular rotation. Feeling hesitant, I went with a burger. The meat was cooked to order, though served on a bun too large, and without the basic accoutrements of lettuce and tomato. The fries looked crisp and well done but were greasy and obviously left under a heat lamp. The server was certainly friendly. Unfortunately she forgot my soup and brought it late. This led to my burger being brought out mid-soup, which is a definite no-no. NEVER bring out the mains before you've cleared the aps. That's just standard procedure and is never tolerable. I don't see a need to return, with several pubs in the area doing the exact same thing with a far superior result. read more

Service is slow, even if the place is almost empty and if you're not a regular they really don't seem to treat you with the same attentiveness. Been there a few times and it's always the same. Great local bar, the original of four Grasshopper locations, that has a long and storied history. The food is great and the atmosphere is very warm and relaxing. Been a customer for 30 years. I have yet to be served a less than above average meal. Family owned and operated, so courtesy is always a given. If you are a sports fan, there is always "your" game on! And don't even get me started on the drinks! Always a healthy pour! Last but not least, try the wings!!!!! Brunch is also a plus! read more

The brunch, the chili, the soda bread...everything we've had at The 'hopper in the past few months since we've moved the the area has been great. Sometimes when they're busy the service can be a bit slow, but their food makes up for it. This place is my Cheers. Its my go to bar when I just need to relax and have a beer. The staff is super friendly, they usually hook me up with a drink on the house everytime I'm there. The food is you're regular bar type of food, nothing special, but tastes great. They have a bunch of big-screen HD t.v.s for all your sport games and what not. If you're in the area and just don't feel like going home right away to the wife and kids, stop in at the hopper and kick back with your favorite beverage. read more

I created a yelp account specifically with the purpose of giving a *1 star* to this restaurant, because I have NEVER in my life had a worse experience, not only in a restaurant, but in a business establishment. If I could give a 0 rating... I would. I TRULY hope this gets read, as I tried to call and complain, but was hung up on by the bartender in question, and told to "F*** off, and go take a crazy pill". My family and I decided to grab a quick meal at Grasshopper one night. There were 5 of us. We got there and ordered drinks... 4 beers and one martini. I am a bartender, and can tell you 100% that all 4 beers were flat... And the martini, tasted like rubbing alcohol. When our waitress returned to take our order, we explained that the beers were flat, and that the martini tasted like rubbing alcohol, when I specifically ordered Absolut... (Which should never taste like that). It was clear that they gave me house vodka, and was going to try and charge for Absolut... Whatever... I don't even care about that part... I watched our waitress carry our drinks over to the bar and explain to the bartender the story of our drinks. Our table was directly next to the bar. He clearly didnt realize that we were looking... And had a fit right in front of us. "F*** THEM! ARE YOU F***ING KIDDING ME? THESE DRINKS ARE PERFECT?! NO IM NOT MAKING NEW ONES"... The waitress came back over, and we explained to her that we saw the bartender cursing us out, and that we felt disrespected, and would like to speak with a manager. The waitress apologizes profusely saying, "I'm so sorry... That's just how he is... He's always like that."... We explained that we didn't care, and still wanted to speak to a manager. Next thing we know, she shows up with the bartender. The bartender is carrying all of the drinks back over to our table. He places the drinks on our table, and starts to chug one of the beers. "DOESN'T LOOK FLAT TO ME!" And slams the beer on our table. We were so dumbfounded, that we could barely even speak. I didn't know whether to laugh... cry... or call the police... Because this bartender looked like he was about to assault us. One of my family members were able to mutter, "Excuse me, sir! But that's extremely rude. We got horrible drinks, and then watched you curse us out... We asked to speak to a manager... But youre still disrespecting us"... He then starts yelling, "I'm the manager. You don't have to eat here. You can go somewhere else." Without saying anything else, my entire family got up and left. That night we got home, and decided to call the restaurant and complain. Low and behold... The same bartender answers. I ask, "Hi, can I please speak to a manager." ... He goes, "Sure, can I ask whose calling?"... I said, "Yes, I would like to call and complain about an incident..."... By this point, the bartender realizes who I am... And he says, "I'm not letting you speak to anybody, lady. Why don't you go and take a crazy pill?" And hangs up the phone. I call back again, he answers, "F*** off!" and hangs up... And now here I am... writing my review on yelp. I hope this gets read, and this man is fired. We came in to the Grasshopper for an after party from our wedding earlier this year. The bar was amazingly hospitable to us. They bought my new wife and I drinks, encouraged our friends and family to continue to celebrate and let us stay well past what would have been their normal closing time. To boot they made sure cabs were there for all of our guests and ended the night with a free round for the entire crew. read more

I have been going to the original Grasshopper in Cedar Grove for many years. The food is great and so is the service. This is a family owned place along with the other locations they own. Each one is wonderful. The family consists of honest hard working people who care about their customers and employees alike. I love them all from the owner "Chief" and all of his sons, daughters, and grandchildren who all participate in the running of these wonderful restaurants. Two friends and I went to The Grasshopper for Sunday lunch today and enjoyed our meal. Each lady each had a different sandwich from the extensive menu and they were tasty and well-served. The waitress was attentive and pleasant and stopped to chat with us. The comfortable atmosphere is tavern/pub-style, neat and pleasant. The menu has a wide choice and the prices are very good. I love the hopper! I came here with three other people and our bill came out to $46. Where can four people go for quality homemade food for a little over $10 a person? The staff is very professional and will check up on you as needed. The bartenders give a generous pour on mixed drinks and even the drinks were rather cheap. Great food, drinks, staff!!
