Coming in on Saturday evening on Labor Day weekend, I wasn't sure what to expect. But it wasn't very busy and there was plenty of parking. You walk in and the ambience is intimate and dark but still friendly. We were seated immediately and we were taken care of right away. I had the Swiss mushroom burger and it was definitely one of the better ones I've had! Really good mushrooms and good burger patty. My friend had the bacon cheeseburger without the cheese and he also said it was pretty good. Overall the prices were right, it was a good place for a good burger which is what I was craving, and I would definitely return! Would want to sample some of their other food. One of the things I enjoy most about coming to New Jersey is going to all the different diners and pubs and just enjoying what they have. I have lived all over the US and I feel like this is one of the easiest places to get a good and cheap meal without too much hassle and not having to do fast food.

Pretty chilled bar to go and hang out with friends or just to stop by for a drink after a long day at work.

No masks to get drinks at the bar. Just a huge crowd.

We wanted to love this place but they're not following Covid policies. We're here, at night, and there's a huge crowd. No one is wearing a mask at the bar. They're not enforcing social distancing or anything. It's just a mosh pit of people with no masks and no enforcement. I've been to many bars that have asked all people to stay in their seats and have waitresses so no one is just standing/moving around.

A great place to get good food, meet people and have good conversation. Can get a tad loud but that's the atmosphere at a pub!

It's the kind of place that feels thoughtfully designed without trying too hard. Our waiter was incredibly welcoming and friendly, which set a great tone for the meal. For drinks, we ordered the Raspberry Moon and a matcha latte. Both were colorful, well-presented, and really tasty, a nice way to start the meal. The food itself was an experience. We ordered the temaki set and got to learn how to assemble our own hand rolls, which made the meal interactive and fun. The sushi arrived in a beautiful presentation and everything tasted fresh and high quality. Overall, it was a memorable dining experience with great service, creative drinks, and delicious food. Definitely a spot worth checking out in Montclair.

The reservation required a credit card but I was able to mention a birthday. We were seated right away at a nice window table with a bench, which made it easy to fit everyone. We ordered a bunch of small plates and not a single miss: Tuna Crudo -- fresh, simple, and kid-approved Japanese Potato Salad with Ikura -- lightly creamy with a salty, briny pop Asari Clam Soup -- loaded with clams, miso; buttery and comforting Furikake Cottage Fries -- hot, round crispy ridges with a ketchup-y dip, very snackable for everyone Spicy Tuna Dip -- gone in about 60 seconds For the temaki (hand rolls), they recommend 5 per person. They do something a little different and honestly pretty fun. The fillings come out on flat sticks in a wooden holder (kinda like a taco stand), and you get boxes of nori (seaweed sheets) on the side. You slide the filling onto the seaweed yourself and eat it right away, so everything stays nice and crisp. It's a little DIY, but in a good way. While they offer 3 Temaki preselected sets, you can also order a la carte. I went with the Signature Set (tuna poke, XO scallop, coconut shrimp, salmon serrano, cucumber black sesame) and was really happy with it. We also got also got 2 sets of California rolls for the girls. My brother's Everything Bagel hand roll was a fun surprise. It tasted just like one. We finished with the Lemon Curd Churros- fresh, hot, and crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. The curd was a little on the firm side, but still good. Everyone left full and delighted. NOTES/TIPS: **BYOB, Wheelchair-accessible. Clean bathrooms. Modern vibes. **Entire menu is gluten-free **Vegan options available if you ask, plus a strong plant-based roll selection **Plan for ~5 hand rolls per person (including the kids) **Several parking decks a block or two away

Not sure why the restaurant isn't busier because the good was very good. We split a cauliflower fritters appetizer, which was tasty and hot. It was a cross between breaded fried cauliflower and the Indian Gobi style. I had the mushroom burger, an 8 oz hamburger with mushrooms and sauteed spinach along with melted cheese. The meat was fresh and good. A big step above most burgers plus generous portions of sauteed onions and mushrooms along with melted cheeses. When I get my hamburger craving, I know where I'm going. The Butter Chicken Tacos were an unusual option. Based on Indian Butter Chicken, the national dish of UK along with Chicken Marsala, it was served in a naan with a side of rice. Really very flavorful and creative. The chopped salmon burger with mayo also comes with cheese, which was unexpected, but worked well. Service was prompt and friendly. The waitress and another wait staff person even moved furniture around looking for my grandson's red crayon. (He was sitting on it). Worth a visit even if you don't go have a craft bar or cocktail.

While we stepped away briefly to use the bathroom, our drinks were thrown away. After going back and forth with staff, they only replaced half of what we had. My friend had reserved tables in the back until midnight, yet her guest were rudely told to move to the front before we had even finished our food and drinks (around 11:15 pm). After moving to the front, I set my new drink down on the table to take a quick birthday photo just a few feet away. When I returned, that drink was gone as well. When I brought this to the manager's attention, she initially said there was nothing she could do. After more discussion, she offered a shot of Cuervo, which was not comparable to what I had originally ordered. To make matters worse, the manager, Lori, continued to argue with me in front of other customers, which felt extremely unprofessional and unnecessary. Even after I pointed that out, the interaction continued longer than it should have. We left extremely unhappy with how management handled the entire situation. It's unfortunate that one person's actions (Lori) and lack of professionalism were enough to completely ruin what should have been a special celebration. From the lack of accountability to the way the situation was handled, there was no real effort to make things right.

Located on the roof of the MC Hotel, you can park with Valet, on the street or in a near garage and take the EXPRESS elevator to the rooftop. Getting off the elevator there is a cute vestibule that has potential for them to do so much more with (cute photo opportunity, cute waiting area etc ) but it appears they feature whichever brand gives them the best seasonal props. We made a resy so when we arrived our table was available and had a nice city view. Our goal was to catch the sunset based on the time and while we kinda did, there are absolutely no direct views of the west so you catch bits and pieces of the sunset. Sunrise would probably be awesome up there bc you'd get clear views but clearly a bar won't be open at sunrise. They have a nice specialty cocktail menu and their speciality sangria sounded like we couldn't pass it up so that's what we ordered but there was nothing special about it in any way so we were a little disappointed. We ordered shrimp cocktail and sausage and pepper sliders for a small bite and neither of those were anything to write home about either. The shrimp were a bit limp and the sliders had no peppers on them and not a drop of tomato sauce. Service while friendly was slow and it honestly wasn't busy, especially for a Holiday weekend .... So, overall we land right in the middle with this rating with 3 stars (when we really hoped and thought we'd be talking at least 4).

It's the quintessential destination for a warm summer evening, boasting a classy ambiance, fantastic specialty cocktails, and great music. Whether you're planning a get-together with friends, a lively girls' night out, or a romantic date, Alto fits the bill perfectly. On a recent Friday evening, my party of four had an 8:15 PM reservation. We were finishing dinner nearby and knew we'd be running a bit late, so I called ahead. The hostess I spoke with was incredibly courteous and understanding, which I greatly appreciated. Upon arrival, our table was ready with a lovely view, and our server was nothing short of knowledgeable, attentive, and very pleasant. The drinks were a highlight of the evening. Nearly all of us opted for a specialty cocktail, and we all raved about how delicious they were. I particularly enjoyed the Golden Echo, a delightful blend of passionfruit liqueur, mango puree, lime, spicy bitters, ginger beer, and dark rum. It truly transported me to a Caribbean getaway! We also thoroughly enjoyed the fries with their addictive herb aioli and the popcorn, both of which disappeared quickly. Given my consistently positive experiences, I'll absolutely be returning to Alto to enjoy more of what it offers. For those driving, both street parking and valet service are available.
