Are you f****** sick of paying $8 for the Golden gate Transit 580 bus to get from the SMART train…read moreto BART or Capital Corridor in Richmond? When they have the bridge open for cycling, why not burn some calories, save the $8, and spend just a little more money for Johnny Boi Burger? If you develop a hunger when you're up on that bridge, then cruise right down tewksbury, and pop in for a proper smashed burger.

On our way to the Richmond Plunge for an afternoon swim, we passed by Johnny Boi and the place had…read morea lively vibe so we made a mental note to check out their smashburgers after our swim. Parking will be on neighborhood streets and was not too hard to find. Stepping in we immediately noticed that mural arts on the wall. Ordering can be at the register or via an electronic kiosk. They have a lot of interesting smash burger options, including a Trompo featuring Al Pastor. We got the Fat Boi, Trompo, and Highway Style fries. We waited longer than we expected, but good thing they have many monitors so we watched the World Cup while waiting for our food. When the food came, they were an impressive sight. The burgers were loaded and dripping with grease. My son liked his Fat Boi, but I thought the Al Pastor in the Trompo was a bit bland. The Trompo was also so greasy that grease was running down my hand and forearm while I am eating it, and I can feel my arteries hardening already! The Highway Style fries were decent. A smash patty laid between two layers of fries and then topped with melted cheese. It was decadent but a guilty pleasure. The kids gave the place 7-7.5 out of 10 and they said they would come back. For myself, probably not as the food was just too heavy for me.

I wanted pancakes today... to absorb the overindulgence of cocktails the night before. (Oy!) I…read morereviewed yelp to find something close that maybe we hadn't tried, and I found Mely's with the amazing rating of 4.3 stars. We've lived in Hercules for over 30 years and are creatures of habit, so it was nice to venture the 10-minute drive to San Pablo. We were not impressed by the exterior strip mall building, but the interior of Mely's is very cute, homey, and clean. (I even peeked into the kitchen since the door was open.) I wanted pancakes, but got waffles instead since W ordered the blueberry buttermilk stack. We both had a side of eggs, his scrambled and mine sunny side up. The eggs were delish; mine in particular was perfectly cooked with slightly crunchy edges, a beautiful, silky, runny yolk, and no uncooked whites. The blueberry pancakes are so good! Of course they are huge and I ate some of them in addition to my waffle. We could have split just the pancakes and been perfectly happy. They cook berries inside the homemade batter and top them with a house-made blueberry compote. Maple syrup and soft butter on the side. The waffles are crispy outside with a light, airy, center, dusted with powdered sugar and cinnamon. I had strawberries on the side (+$5 !!). Since I ate some of W's pancakes, we took half the waffles home. W had a drip coffee--no decalf available so I had the fresh-squeezed OJ. It was a large glass so I took half of that home, too. The coffee was nothing to rave about, but it was coffee. Service was friendly and efficient--there is only one cook and one server, and it seems several of us arrived at the same time on this Sunday morning. Overall a wonderful find that we will return to so we can explore more dishes. We saw omelets and Benedict's come out that looked amazing! Plus, I want to try the dinner menu, which also looked pretty amazing.

Brilliant idea to turn a parking lot area into a venue with so many cozy and appealing areas and niches. The live music was great and kids have their own area in the back section that features a sign to adults to please keep an eye on their kiddos. It's an unexpected hidden gem on 2nd St. and 205 Cutting Blvd. in Richmond I can't wait to go back!

Upon walking in there's food/bev, and a very open outdoor space. On the particular day we went, there was a super cool band playing and pumpkins for purchase as far as the eye could see. The menu looks good, and if we didn't already have dinner plans, would love to have tried one of the burgers or sandos. They have a kiddo/pup menu which was fun to see, and fresh Far West Apple Juice. So of course we had to grab a fresh glass on ice. Super delicious. There's beers on draft and canned ~ we tried the Sierra Nevada Octoberfest and sips from Mare Island Brewing. Service was excellent, staff were so fun and kind to our family. Would love to come back here for other events/music. Great vibes.
