Updated review after 8 years! Point Richmond is an unusual little town. Rarely do you see three Mexican restaurants (Masa, Maya, and El Sol) located within a block and all doing reasonably well, even post COVID19 shutdowns. We recently had a group lunch here, since our guest was craving Mexican. He's visiting from the East Coast, and said even the worse Bay Area Mexican food is decent compared to the limited options in his area. The food and service is still pretty good here. Free chips with individual salsa bowls. Lots of mix and match lunch combos. My enchilada and tamale plate came with tons of rice, refried beans, and a whole lot of cheese. Decent , affordable and very filling! They have a sizable menu too with mole, carne asada and various item using tiger prawn. Probably best to come here for a quiet, intimate lunch. Masa down the street probably has better food but is on the louder side. Maya is great for takeout but only has limited patio seating. Raising my rating to 4 stars for indoor dining. read more

** The following review reflects my takeout experience DURING the COVID-19 pandemic. ** After sauntering along the seaside at Miller-Knox Regional Shoreline, Jamie W. and I sometimes find ourselves in the small hamlet of Point Richmond because it exudes a bit of Mayberry-like charm on a lazy Sunday afternoon. It was only recently that we took a deeper look at this compact Mexican spot and recognized it as a sister operation to the El Sol in Rodeo (review: https://bit.ly/2UMkD6z). We discovered that spot when we took a detour on one of our walks on the San Pablo Bay Regional Trail. We liked the $10 Tiger Prawn Salad so much in Rodeo that we got giddy when we saw it on the menu here through the window. Unfortunately it's closed on Sundays despite a bunch of "We're Open" signs that someone must've forgotten to take down. So on the following Friday, as I was coming off the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge from the city, I spontaneously made a beeline back to El Sol and ordered a couple of those salads for our dinner. It was just as we remembered it, a hearty bed of iceberg lettuce topped with avocado slices, fresh salsa, pinto beans, shredded cheddar cheese, and several grilled tiger prawns (photo: https://bit.ly/2Pq5OGu). My favorite meal from El Sol is the Tiger Prawn Salad. The prawns are grilled with a nice char and layered beautifully on top of the lettuce, pico, and cheese and sliced avocado. I usually top it off with green sauce or the Italian dressing. read more

Was looking for a nice light dinner before going to the theater next door. Decided to give this place a try. Decided to try the street tacos with carnitas. They were really good! Many people walk into restaurants for two reasons only, to inhale food and judge the customer service. Many people forget to take in the environment and the culture. When I walk into El Sol Restaurant, I am greeted by an open kitchen surrounded by beautiful Mexican women. The atmosphere of watching the older generation pass down culinary traditions to their young allows me to feel as if I am home cooking with my loved ones. I really loved listening to the women speaking in their native tongue, enjoying one another's company. The establishment has an open seating option, so i chose my seat. I was immediately helped by the waitress and she was really laid back yet attentive. I ordered 4 fish tacos which came with avocado, onions, and cilantro on corn tortillas. I try not to add extra onto street inspired tacos, because the idea of it is to focus more on the flavor of the meat or seafood. The avocado gave the taco a creamy aspect that meshed well with the onions and cilantro. The fish was cooked to perfection. It was so soft that it literally melted in your mouth. I actually enjoyed the salsa. I loved to taste fresh tomato and the citrus. The only thing I could say, is the flavoring needs more work. It felt like the taco was missing something. Maybe creating a simple sauce or working on the seafood flavoring could be tweaked. It felt as if I had to add salsa from my chips to give it a little flavor. read more

My office did a food order to go. They got salads and I got chicken enchiladas. It was ok I definitely had better. No flavoring on the chicken and the sauce was just ok on the enchilada. I won't be going back. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. I feel like I wasted my money and so do my co-workers. There is nothing that stands out with them at all. They need to work on their seasonings and flavor. The chips weren't good at all. The salt ratio wasn't even on them. Don't waste your time it is just ok. read more

El Sol has been in its Point Richmond location for almost two years and is still going strong. I've popped my head in a few times but didn't review until now. I thought it fair since I offered up my opinion of the newly opened El Taco Feliz (corner of Tewksbury and Santa Fe) a couple of days ago. I placed a similar takeaway order as I did at El Taco Feliz - two carne asada street tacos and a chile verde super burrito. I watched as the meat for my tacos sizzled away on the grill and each wrapped in two warm corn tortillas, garnished with chopped onions and cilantro with a couple of lime wedges on the side. Next, my burrito was assembled and it was stuffed to the gills. I don't know how anyone can fiil a tortilla without it exploding, it was that full. I waited for a ride from my DH so it was a good 15 minutes from when I walked out of the restaurant until I was home. As I plated up our food, one difference was immediately obvious - the food was still hot. Two soft tortillas wrapped around a good-sized portion of carne asada. The burrito was also good, not too heavy on the cheese or sour cream. I would have preferred a little less rice, but that's just my taste. I also enjoyed the red and green salsas that was included in my order. Chips are not complimentary which is fine with me and their price is a teensy bit higher than at El Taco Feliz, but not a deal breaker in my opinion. If I had to choose between the two for ambience, El Sol gets my vote. Their dining room is tasteful, warm and cheerful as are their staff. read more

This review is actually way overdue but while I have some time I wanted to thank El Sol for being my FAVORITE. I am a 10year plus customer, and I absolutely love the staff including the owner Joesapine because their customer service is top tier. I am a pescatarian but when I place my order for food I am always satisfied. They listen to me and always want their customers beyond satisfied! It was a time when I was in the hospital and El Sol continued to prepare my soups for me, which meant so much to me. A special, warm, pleasant ambience to dwell in. I am so very disappointed in this place. My wife and I have eaten here many times pre-Covid and during Covid also. On this attest occasion we came here to dine-in. We were told that we would have to order and pay first and then be seated. We obliged. We sat across from two older Caucasian women that had came right before us and not very long after we sat down they finished their food and asked for the bill. We were astonished that they were allowed to pay AFTER they finished their meal. We were flabbergasted at this but didn't cause a scene and we would hate to think this is a racial issue but I can honestly say I will NEVER eat there again and I will be telling any and everybody I know not to go there either. read more

It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great either. I was expecting the beef to be more flavorful, especially with some type of seasoning, however it tasted bland to me. I would give them 4 stars but they are kinda slow. The service was alright, they were pretty busy and honestly didn't look like they tried very hard with the service. Fairly disorganized, I watched as three different servers asked the table next to us if they wanted to order when they'd already had. I particularly had trip someone down to order. Having said that, the food was really good. If I were to judge this place by food alone, I would have given it 4 stars. But I sat my butt down and ate here, so subtract a star for crappy service. We have lived here a long time and only recently discovered this gem. Very good, authentic food and friendly people. I wish they were open on Sunday which is about the only day I go out for breakfast. It was almost lunch time because I had been working in the garden, so I had a couple of street tacos.
