(5/5) THE BEANS.. Perusing the menu, whatever plate you order, you can specify the kind of beans you want (black beans, pinto beans, refried beans). I chose the black beans, but specified "no cheese" on them in a semi-futile attempt to stay on the healthy side. =) SEAFOOD TACOS I decided on the Seafood Taco Platter, where you get one shrimp taco and a fish taco along with a big side of beans and lots of rice. Each taco comes with a double layer of corn tortillas with grilled shrimp, or fish topped by shredded cabbage drizzled with a lime aioli. Instead of deep fried, the shrimp and fish on each taco were grilled to perfection, instead of deep fried. The fish filet was diced and stir-fried with a wonderful aroma. Instead of making a mess, I decided just to eat my taco by slicing and dicing it from the plate. Super good! Ate at this Mexican restaurant because it was selected by " The birthday girl" it's her favorite restaurant in Richmond. She enjoyed her ground beef enchilada and chile relleno. With that said, this is my take on it;Quick disclaimer I am Mexican and my mother was an outstanding cook so my expectations are high. I got the chile relleno and the chile was hard to cut not to mention the sauce was some canned tomatoes with sautéed onions. No spice, corners were cut because the poblano chiles should cut like butter when prepared correctly. Then we ordered what they call chimichangas...they need to fix that name because what we got were flautas with a chipotle sauce they tasty but definitely not a chimichanga. The Jamaica agua Fresca was delightful. They had fresh refried beans and the Mexican rice was pretty good. Now the birria was a huge disappointment. I ordered a sope and the sope was nice it had that crispy but chewy texture that you want when eating one but the birria had this cinnamon aftertaste, yuk. I took a 2nd bite to make sure I wasn't trippen. So gross, I decided to pack that thing up and bring it to my little Siamese cat, she will appreciate it. They have great guacamole and the salsa and chips were also good. The restaurant is clean, they have a great hostess that is very attentive he came by several times to check up on us. Now the waitress was another story. I asked for tortillas and she vanished never came back. One of my friends invited us out since this was on her side of the Bay and it was delicious! We made it before the dinner rush so we were seated immediately. Our waitress immediately came over with waters and menus. The restaurant was comfy and warm and just full of good vibes. We ordered the chimichangas for appetizers (which were delicious). The first thing I noticed as I was waiting to be seated was a signed that basically said "no more free chips and salsa due to inflation"! Wow! Well we were seated right away and immediately saw that their menu has a wide selection of delicious food to choose from including a variety of fish items which I love. Agave cook's their food to perfection. I gave this place a try several years back when they first open. Which no Yelp was available. I'm glad I payed a visit a second time. For those that know octopus it has to be cooked perfectly. I was really happy the first time that the second time the consistency was espectacular. I had a campechana and my husband had the fajitas. The meat was tender and the taste excellent all the flavors were represented. The beans and authentic rice are also good to highlight on. I especially love that the veggies in the fajitas are cooked perfectly and not overly sauced. Margaritas are one of the stars here so plan to enjoy one or more (they even have pitchers). There is a bar with TVs, 2 big rooms and a room that looks like it's for a private party. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated, big enough to accommodate drop ins without a reservation. We discovered a colorful, clean and friendly neighborhood place. The menu is large and full of Mexican dishes, both popular standards and specialties. Our server was great and helped us with the menu. I over-ordered a huge Chicken Tortilla Soup and a full plate of Carnitas, pork with grilled cactus. It was so delicious, even the cactus. No prickly needles here. The portions were generous and I had to take a doggy bag home. My dad liked his tacos and my sister enjoyed her Chicken Enchiladas with green sauce. Probably the best tasting Mexican we've had in some time. My "most popular" Cadillac Margarita came in a huge goblet with an upside down bottle of Gran Manier. Potent and delicious. The mole in Oaxaco, Mexico was internationally famous. The chicken mole in Richmond's Agave Azul was even better with the addition of sesame seeds. Beyond delicious. The waiter was too funny , his joking making us laugh out loud. As we cleaned our plates entirely he joked whether we wanted to lick them. We did want to. The food was that good. On a Monday afternoon it wasn't too loud, but the Mexican music added just the right touch to the ambience and our waiter's kind encouragement of a little girl's learning Spanish felt very Mexican. My friend was delighted with her shrimp enchiladas. The vegetables were al dente and of superior quality and taste too. The rice wads fluffy with each grain discreet. The pinto beans tasted great. The chocolate cake was so fresh, rich, and decadent we almost couldn't believe it with chocolate syrup on the plate to deepen the chocolate flavor when several layers of iced cake was dragged through it. The food is not cheap and it tastes superb. Each dish deserves to be savored in its perfection. Even the water served very cold with a lemon wedge tasted extremely good.
