My friend and I decided to try this place out after work, and it was one of the few places open after 10pm. Of our options, this one had the highest reviews so we gave it a chance. The inside of the restaurant was okay. The ordering process was stupid. I ordered a vegetarian burrito (in English) and my friend asked them about the type of beef they offered (in Spanish). The woman didn't know so she asked the cook behind her, then I guess they asked him about chicken...? For the two burritos, my friend paid with $40 and the change didn't make sense. It turns out that she charged us $28 for two burritos because she thought I ordered a shrimp burrito. When we corrected her, she couldn't recalculate the new change so we had to return the change for her to calculate the new change. The food was cold and bland. This is an odd spot. Half of the building is a bar, and half is a restaurant. They are pretty much open to each other, so you will definitely hear the LOUD music from the bar. The music from the bar is so loud you can successfully Shazam it while sitting in the restaurant. The food is very good. The menu is not huge, but there is good variety. This place is a total sausage fest... but once you can look past that... this place is amazing! I walked in one day, because I was getting my car worked on down the street. And I swear to Bob... the lady behind the counter looked just like my abuelita... cooking away for her family. After my favorite Mexican place (in Oakland) closed, we were on a mission to find a good replacement. La Plazuela is now a fave. Half the place is a bar w/ pool tables... so the music is pretty loud, which makes it seem festive. Bonus is you can get a real margarita! There is a half wall that divides the restaurant side, so if you bring kids, it's not like you're taking them to a bar at all. The food is pretty darn good. We've tried their guac, flautas, ceviche (awesome!!!), chile verde, enchiladas, and carnitas there so far. The menu leans towards Salvadorean cooking as all the dishes are served with curtido (slaw) and they have pupusas on the menu. Tip: as with a lot of places, they initially serve a mild salsa with chips. But if you ask for a hotter salsa (mas picante) they will bring a spicier one out. read more

Most of the reviews on here are pretty spot on. Here goes my experience... Walking in was a "little" awkward... but let me tell you why. The parking lot is across the street on the side. When you walk up to the building, the half you approach is the bar and the door to it is like one of those barn doors where half can be open and half can be closed. Well, on the day my friend and I came the upper half was wide open and we could see people sitting at the bar. So if you are walking up to a building and you see a door, naturally you'd think it was the entrance, right? Ok, so my friend and I walked up to this door, I guess the bottom half that was closed was latched from the inside so he reached in and unlatched it. It was pretty loud and as we entered every head turned to us and watched us walk in. The resounding echo of the latch being closed again sounded louder from inside. It reminded me of one of those western movies where an odd city couple (or a tall white guy with a short asian girl in our case) walks into a bar full of cowboys (Mexicans in this scene) and the whole place gets quiet and watches the two walk in slowly and carefully. Even while we sort of sauntered into the restaurant half I felt like we were still being watched. Once we were in this area - BAM! - I saw the "real" entrance, which faced the complete opposite of the direction we were coming from so new comers wouldn't even know it was there unless they circled the building first. Boy did I feel like an idiot! Had we used this door I'm pretty sure our entrance would have been less creepy and awkward. Anyway, there was no one in there so lots of tables and cozy seating. The waitress is super nice. The music is definitely loud, but we sat in a booth by the window so we could still hear each other talk and didn't have to yell over the music. BTW, this loud music is coming from a juke box in the bar so when it stops it gets kind of quiet in the whole building. And it was really hot inside even though it was cooler outside. My friend ordered the super burrito and I got the shrimp quesadilla (from the appetizer section). Both awesome choices!! I loved my quesadilla - shrimp was fresh! My friend loved his burrito also and he said it tasted like authentic mexican food. I also like the fact that they are open late, they have a pool table and TVs in the bar and their margaritas are really good! Have a really hard time finding good Mexican food that has great food and great prices. Yesterday I tried their regular steak burrito and a chicken quesadilla. It taste better than many of the Mexican food in the area. The food is tasty. Their ingredients taste fresh. I enjoy their chips and salsa too. Service was also great. Like that the location is easy to reach off San Pablo Ave. The seating area is a bit dim, could use some brighter lights ; ) other than that.. I will most definitely return. I have yet to try their fresh Tomales Bay Oysters, sold in a dozen over ice! They also sell Margarita pitchers and people write about these; so looking forward to trying.. read more

I have been going here for many years for a quick late night bite however decided to take my parents for lunch on a sunday although it was so busy we were welcomed with smiles and urgency. We didnt wait long at all, a table was quickly cleaned and ready for us. The food is always amazing and the customer service is superb. The guacamole is that powder guacamole you add water to... It's not real guacamole people!! Can I start by saying I love fresh made tortillas, and you get them everytime you walk in this place. I think they even make their chips with them and those are great and the salsa is too we always eat 2 bowls of chips. If you have been to mexico at someone's house this is exactly how you feel when you eat here. You smell the aromas listen to the people at the bar sing and talk and there is a lady at the stove whipping up a feast. I hope she stays forever because she is the soul of this place. We love La Plazuela. The food is triple yum. The fat steaming corn tortillas are wonderful, served with fajitas or huevos rancheros. Best guacamole I've ever purchased, not that watered down stuff you sometimes get. Big portions, lots of flavor. The servers are classy, beautiful, and sweet. I'm vegan - the menu isn't - so I just ad lib and make up my dinner, and it doesn't seem awkward or weird. Every helping of beans, onions, rice, cabbage, or sauteed peppers is full of life - the kind of thing that a vegetarian plate depends on, and every other kind of plate gets big mileage from. The restaurant room has this crazy quadrilateral off-kilter angle, painted 4 shades of red, two kinds of yellow, and green - a different color for every surface. One of the worst Mexican restaurants my boyfriend and I have ever eaten. First off, they don't even offer aguas frescas. What kind of Mexican restaurant doesn't offer aguas frescas! Then our plates took over 30min to reach our table. When they did arrived, the plates were so hot, for a moment, I thought they cooked the food on top of them. The waitress even warned us about how hot the plates were, and she wasn't playing. They were hot to the point that they can potentially be very dangerous for kids. We were completely wrong. I got enchiladas, he got breaded shrimp. The red sauce on my enchiladas tasted like it came straight from a can, not freshly homemade. And the beef inside my enchiladas were chopped instead of shredded, like normal enchiladas. My boyfriend's plate wasn't better. There was more beans on his plate than there were shrimp! And they weren't even that good! And the beans and rice from both our plates, let just say my momma can cook WAY better beans, rice, AND enchiladas! When we first arrived, everything seem pretty chill, the restaurant had good potential. But while we waited for our plates, a group of about 7 guys came in making a ruckus, being loud, ordering beer, and screaming at the tv showing a soccer game that was hanging above me. What made it worst, they were noticeably checking out the waitresses and flirting with them. And some of the waitresses dress so, what's the word I'm looking for, hoe-ish? I mean, there was one with some VERY short shorts and high-heel boots, which wasn't cute at all. Nowhere near professional. They really need to discuss the proper attire they should be wearing for work, cus trust me, none of them were looking cute best believe that. It took longer for our plates to reach our table then it did for us to eat out food (we pretty much gave up on it since it didn't taste very good). When we were first ordering, we were planning on getting dessert as well. Well that idea changed very quickly-no dessert for us that's for sure. When we were done with our food, which we didn't completely finish, we went to the register to pay. As we stood there, with a waitress on the other side directly in front of us, she completely ignores us! Didn't bother to ask us what we wanted, needed, nothing! I'm just standing there thinking "Wtf! B****, I know you see me aren't you gona say something! Dafuq, it's your job to help the customers, not ignore them!" She actually just walks away and says nothing. Please note that I'm already pissed the f*** off. We finally got someone to attend to us, which still took a couple of minutes, and in the end, we spent almost $40 for crappy food in this crappy restaurant. Poor food, poor service. They really should consider hiring better staff that can communicate better with customers and consider lowering their prices for food that isn't even that good.
