Food: 3/5 I tried the chicken quesadilla from the appetizer menu which comes with a small salad on the side which was refreshing. Overall, I enjoyed the fact that the quesadilla was crispy/toasted well, but the chicken itself did not have much flavor. The margaritas are quite tasty, not too sweet. Service: 4/5 The waitress was friendly and helpful. Ambiance: 4/5 The restaurant midday was not too packed, and I found the pink exterior of the building quite pleasing (also easy to spot). I was looking forward to playing pool, but the waitress informed it was not working. read more

This is a cute little spot, idk why it was so quiet on a Friday night. I stopped in for a drink and it did not disappoint. I had a pina colada and it was delicious and didn't taste boozey, even though I felt it when I stood up lol. read more

They have no idea what a Caldo de Res is!!!, Food is not authentic, lack of flavor and some weird veggies in it like Yucca, this is call a Mexican restaurant!! The meat was hard to find... Worst Caldo the res ever!!! I don't know about the other food but I can imagine how it taste!! read more

My friend and I decided to try this place out after work, and it was one of the few places open after 10pm. Of our options, this one had the highest reviews so we gave it a chance. The inside of the restaurant was okay. The ordering process was stupid. I ordered a vegetarian burrito (in English) and my friend asked them about the type of beef they offered (in Spanish). The woman didn't know so she asked the cook behind her, then I guess they asked him about chicken...? For the two burritos, my friend paid with $40 and the change didn't make sense. It turns out that she charged us $28 for two burritos because she thought I ordered a shrimp burrito. When we corrected her, she couldn't recalculate the new change so we had to return the change for her to calculate the new change. The food was cold and bland. It had avocados in it even though he had specially requested not to have any. Blegh. read more

This is an odd spot. Half of the building is a bar, and half is a restaurant. They are pretty much open to each other, so you will definitely hear the LOUD music from the bar. The music from the bar is so loud you can successfully Shazam it while sitting in the restaurant. The food is very good. The menu is not huge, but there is good variety. The ceviche is excellent, the guacamole is fresh and chunky, and the chilaquiles are flavorful. This place will definitely satisfy your Mexican food craving. read more

It's a bar -- it's a cafe. Plastic/wood restaurant tables/chairs, just like in the old country. This is THE spot for yummy caldo de res or gorditas or ... whatever your fave *real* Mexican food is! My pal RAVES about the caldo de camaron, too! We met friends there, and since they had margaritas, we ordered them too. My favorite menu item -- gorditas, hands down. Oh, yeah, did I mention -- somtimes the rancheras are playing really loud on the juke box! Go on a day you're in the mood for music, just in case! Otherwise, get your order to go. 7-7-07: Remodeling in progress... hopefully re-opening soon!! read more

I love this place! It's our go to Mexican food restaurant in the neighborhood. They have delicious food and blended margaritas! They have a full bar and pool table if you don't feel like eating. And a small cozy restaurant good atmosphere. read more

This place is a total sausage fest... but once you can look past that... this place is amazing! I walked in one day, because I was getting my car worked on down the street. And I swear to Bob... the lady behind the counter looked just like my abuelita... cooking away for her family. This tiny woman was making fresh tortillas and grillin' up some carne asada and pollo and just yummy goodness. Everything at this place is a surprise. The seafood is fresh. The Posole, Birria, Chile Verde (my favorite), Tortas, Tacos, Nachos are all delicious! A great find! read more

After my favorite Mexican place (in Oakland) closed, we were on a mission to find a good replacement. La Plazuela is now a fave. Half the place is a bar w/ pool tables... so the music is pretty loud, which makes it seem festive. Bonus is you can get a real margarita! There is a half wall that divides the restaurant side, so if you bring kids, it's not like you're taking them to a bar at all. The food is pretty darn good. We've tried their guac, flautas, ceviche (awesome!!!), chile verde, enchiladas, and carnitas there so far. The menu leans towards Salvadorean cooking as all the dishes are served with curtido (slaw) and they have pupusas on the menu. Tip: as with a lot of places, they initially serve a mild salsa with chips. But if you ask for a hotter salsa (mas picante) they will bring a spicier one out. read more

Most of the reviews on here are pretty spot on. Here goes my experience... Walking in was a "little" awkward... but let me tell you why. The parking lot is across the street on the side. When you walk up to the building, the half you approach is the bar and the door to it is like one of those barn doors where half can be open and half can be closed. Well, on the day my friend and I came the upper half was wide open and we could see people sitting at the bar. So if you are walking up to a building and you see a door, naturally you'd think it was the entrance, right? Ok, so my friend and I walked up to this door, I guess the bottom half that was closed was latched from the inside so he reached in and unlatched it. It was pretty loud and as we entered every head turned to us and watched us walk in. The resounding echo of the latch being closed again sounded louder from inside. It reminded me of one of those western movies where an odd city couple (or a tall white guy with a short asian girl in our case) walks into a bar full of cowboys (Mexicans in this scene) and the whole place gets quiet and watches the two walk in slowly and carefully. Even while we sort of sauntered into the restaurant half I felt like we were still being watched. Once we were in this area - BAM! - I saw the "real" entrance, which faced the complete opposite of the direction we were coming from so new comers wouldn't even know it was there unless they circled the building first. Boy did I feel like an idiot! Had we used this door I'm pretty sure our entrance would have been less creepy and awkward. Anyway, there was no one in there so lots of tables and cozy seating. The waitress is super nice. The music is definitely loud, but we sat in a booth by the window so we could still hear each other talk and didn't have to yell over the music. BTW, this loud music is coming from a juke box in the bar so when it stops it gets kind of quiet in the whole building. And it was really hot inside even though it was cooler outside. My friend ordered the super burrito and I got the shrimp quesadilla (from the appetizer section). Both awesome choices!! I loved my quesadilla - shrimp was fresh! My friend loved his burrito also and he said it tasted like authentic mexican food. I also like the fact that they are open late, they have a pool table and TVs in the bar and their margaritas are really good! I'm definitely a new fan and I'm sure I'll be back to try other items on their menu! read more

Have a really hard time finding good Mexican food that has great food and great prices. Yesterday I tried their regular steak burrito and a chicken quesadilla. It taste better than many of the Mexican food in the area. The food is tasty. Their ingredients taste fresh. I enjoy their chips and salsa too. Service was also great. Like that the location is easy to reach off San Pablo Ave. The seating area is a bit dim, could use some brighter lights ; ) other than that.. I will most definitely return. I have yet to try their fresh Tomales Bay Oysters, sold in a dozen over ice! They also sell Margarita pitchers and people write about these; so looking forward to trying.. read more

This place has good food literally every time I go. I've never had a bad experience. And I hate to say it but this is some of the best Mexican food even compared to San Diego. It's not the cheapest place but it's not cheap food and it's worth even more. I go all the time, 10/10. Get an horchata, they have great drinks. read more

Went there for two $7.99 burritos, witch should've been $15.98. Turned out I paid $22.00 and the lady serving me tossed my receipt before I could look at it. Way to rob your own people. Cuidado latinos, aqui Roban a su propia jente! read more

Honestly, I don't want to seem like THE BAD COMPLAINING CUSTOMER... But maybe the majority of people here have never tasted true mexican authentic food... This place is horrible.. It's really bad... I actually suggest you to GO and taste for yourself... First of all, for some strange reason, when I went there (with my two friends) I felt almost like a 'bar' vibe... I don't know... It didn't quite feel like a restaurant... Everyone working there from the cashier to the cook was a middle aged latino female with very strange provocative attire... I mean, I appreciate the niceness and sensuality these females are trying to show, but come on... It's a restaurant not a hookup bar.... But anyway.... So we come in, the first thing the waiter does is wink at us with a flirty smile.... I chuckle and appreciate the unusual welcome this lady gave us... So I order 'Camarones al mojo de ajo' (Spanish for Shrimp in garlic sauce) and my other two friends get the steak tacos with guacamole.... The guacamole, chips, and salsa arrive first (We ordered cans of coke because surprisingly there weren't any mexican flavored waters to choose from) and it's a shame.... The guacamole is that powder guacamole you add water to... It's not real guacamole people!! The chips were good.. of course.. but the salsa had an overbearing taste of vinegar (the main sign of CANNED salsa). So I say, okay okay.. let's give this place a chance... Comes the food.... My garlic shrimp.. oh dear God.... They were RUBBER SHRIMP! The kind you buy frozen at walmart or a cheap store for a couple of bucks per pound! The kind that you bite on and tastes like RUBBER!!! DUDE! All it was, was rubber shrimp with garlic and grilled onions... no spices or dedication! Come on!!!! I know how this dish is supposed to be! I am a mexican cook for God sake! The steak tacos and beans and rice were DROWNED in oil and fatty pieces of steak... AN EMBARRASMENT. A true embarrasment. The only good thing was the chips. Honestly. And before you think 'this is just one of those complaining customers', GO AND CHECK IT OUT FOR YOURSELF FIRST... But if you haven't checked out a REAL AUTHENTIC MEXICAN RESTAURANT, you problably won't know what I am talking about... But hey! This is just my review! You've been warned! Girls at la plazuela! YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO COOK! Muchachas de la plazuela! NO SABEN COCINAR! APRENDAN A COCINAR BIEN, NO HAGAN COCHINADAS COMO ESTAS!!! QUE VERGUENZA EN SERIO!!!! read more

My One Word: Full! Fact #1: Burritos are gigantic and ceviche comes in huge portions! But beans are crushed beans... I personally like my beans whole in burritos. Fact #2: The servers were really nice. Fact #3: It was scary getting here, going through Richmond at 11pm was rough. read more

Can I start by saying I love fresh made tortillas, and you get them everytime you walk in this place. I think they even make their chips with them and those are great and the salsa is too we always eat 2 bowls of chips. If you have been to mexico at someone's house this is exactly how you feel when you eat here. You smell the aromas listen to the people at the bar sing and talk and there is a lady at the stove whipping up a feast. I hope she stays forever because she is the soul of this place. The staff is nice and after a few times remembers your face. We take our daughter her and she always feels welcomed. My husband is in love with the Chile Verde and I like the Chile Rellenos. We've had the following and have been quite pleased beef caldo (on a cold afternoon or if your sick) nachos (with any kind of meat) burritos (these are ok) fish tacos fish fillets carnitas plate Steak with tomatoes, onions and peppers We usually go for early lunch on the weekends and on sundays this place usually has a couple of hungover people eating seafood soup to cure themselves. If you want to go in the evenings they have a bar connected where you can also play pool and listen to some rancheros. read more

So my friend and I always get weird looks when we go in here, cuz we're always the only gueros in the crowd. We don't care. It's yum. I haven't ventured too deep into the menu for one reason only--the pupusas are SOOOOOOO damn good. So good. The waitresses are nice, they have a bar, lots of chunty music playing, pool tables...what more could you want? read more

This place usually seems a bit deserted save for one to two occupied tables. I've had the super burrito twice and each Time the meat has been dry and unsavory. We love La Plazuela. The food is triple yum. The fat steaming corn tortillas are wonderful, served with fajitas or huevos rancheros. Best guacamole I've ever purchased, not that watered down stuff you sometimes get. Big portions, lots of flavor. The servers are classy, beautiful, and sweet. I'm vegan - the menu isn't - so I just ad lib and make up my dinner, and it doesn't seem awkward or weird. Every helping of beans, onions, rice, cabbage, or sauteed peppers is full of life - the kind of thing that a vegetarian plate depends on, and every other kind of plate gets big mileage from. The restaurant room has this crazy quadrilateral off-kilter angle, painted 4 shades of red, two kinds of yellow, and green - a different color for every surface. Big time awesome character! read more

My first day in California, dinner was at this place. Impressed with service, margaritas used to be good, but last time we went, a month ago, they were not that great (cheap tequilla). Chicken burrito is awesome, quesdilla dont waste ur time with that. The back bar gets loud, hard to hear your party talking. read more

One of the worst Mexican restaurants my boyfriend and I have ever eaten. First off, they don't even offer aguas frescas. What kind of Mexican restaurant doesn't offer aguas frescas! Then our plates took over 30min to reach our table. When they did arrived, the plates were so hot, for a moment, I thought they cooked the food on top of them. The waitress even warned us about how hot the plates were, and she wasn't playing. They were hot to the point that they can potentially be very dangerous for kids. Warning: if your bringing small children, please play close attention to where they place their hands, cus the hot plates will burn them! We thought the food took awhile cus it was that good. We were completely wrong. I got enchiladas, he got breaded shrimp. The red sauce on my enchiladas tasted like it came straight from a can, not freshly homemade. And the beef inside my enchiladas were chopped instead of shredded, like normal enchiladas. My boyfriend's plate wasn't better. There was more beans on his plate than there were shrimp! And they weren't even that good! And the beans and rice from both our plates, let just say my momma can cook WAY better beans, rice, AND enchiladas! When we first arrived, everything seem pretty chill, the restaurant had good potential. But while we waited for our plates, a group of about 7 guys came in making a ruckus, being loud, ordering beer, and screaming at the tv showing a soccer game that was hanging above me. What made it worst, they were noticeably checking out the waitresses and flirting with them. And some of the waitresses dress so, what's the word I'm looking for, hoe-ish? I mean, there was one with some VERY short shorts and high-heel boots, which wasn't cute at all. Nowhere near professional. They really need to discuss the proper attire they should be wearing for work, cus trust me, none of them were looking cute best believe that. It took longer for our plates to reach our table then it did for us to eat out food (we pretty much gave up on it since it didn't taste very good). When we were first ordering, we were planning on getting dessert as well. Well that idea changed very quickly-no dessert for us that's for sure. When we were done with our food, which we didn't completely finish, we went to the register to pay. As we stood there, with a waitress on the other side directly in front of us, she completely ignores us! Didn't bother to ask us what we wanted, needed, nothing! I'm just standing there thinking "Wtf! B****, I know you see me aren't you gona say something! Dafuq, it's your job to help the customers, not ignore them!" She actually just walks away and says nothing. Please note that I'm already pissed the f*** off. We finally got someone to attend to us, which still took a couple of minutes, and in the end, we spent almost $40 for crappy food in this crappy restaurant. Poor food, poor service. They really should consider hiring better staff that can communicate better with customers and consider lowering their prices for food that isn't even that good. The only good thing i tried was their chips and handmade tortillas. Never coming here again... read more

Well to be honest I do like the place, Im not picky about food, but this place has great tortas and even greater costumer service. Ive been there a few times and it has recently been renovated.
