I was told that the hip crowd and many students from UGA come here to hang out. I drove here to Athens, GA from metro Atlanta, which was a surprising 90 minutes drive . I didn't realize this when google maps told me how far of a drive it was. Ugh, oh well. The Globe restaurant and Grill is one of those restaurants in downtown Athens GA that can be characterized as being those places that's just an interesting place to be. The ambiance was subtle and casual, but a little bit noisy and a bit difficult to see, since it was kind of dim lit and quite the meal that I might have been something different, but I took it all in stride, since I was meeting a friend here, who lived here in Athens. I arrived here around 6pm after killing time in and around Athens and walking around the campus of UGA about half hour before dinner. The restaurant was kind of empty and we got seated right away. It was just three of us and we got seated on the floor next to the entrance. We must've spent about an hour or so here before we left. The service year was pretty good and not the best, but it was OK and average. Well, the ambience was just all right but loud the overall experience here was decently good and I had a good time with meeting friends for dinner here in Athens, Georgia. Te restaurant was small, but cozy at the same time. I ordered a salad that seemed appropriate at the time. Lol During my drive back to Stone Mountain, GA afterwards, I made a stop at a Bojangles and had fun thereafter. The Globe restaurant and Grill is located at 199 N Lumpkin Street here in downtown Athens, GA. The university of Georgia flagship campus is about a minute walk from this restaurant, so I bet a lot of students and faculty dine here from time to time. They accept credit cards, which is always nice and appropriate, as well as cash. The parking here kind of sucks and really is limited. Since I was here on a Monday evening, I got lucky with metered parking up the street. The meter itself accepted credit cards, so that's always a good thing. Thankful for the local government to install parking meters that does that. The prices here can be a little pricey, as worth many of them out there, but truth be told, I was on vacation and didn't really think twice about it. Just wanted to have a good time with friends and company. The salad itself was good. I think it was the appropriate meal to sink myself into. I thought the salad was delicious and I had just water to drink, considering that I had to drive about an hour west to Stone Mountain. While I would have ordered something else, I thought about watching what I eat and not be crazy about calorie watching, I just settled on eating what a friend of mine ate, and that's perfectly fine. The company was good and it was the perfect cap to a whirlwind tour of Atlanta for 24 hours, since the next morning, I was out of Atlanta bounded for Tampa, FL on Delta airlines. I wouldn't have traded this time for anything. My friend, also a frequent marathoner like myself, hails from Athens, GA inspires me to keep going and going strong. Definitely quite nice to hang out with her and her non running husband on this evening of October 24, 2016. He actually travels with her to her races and provides that much needed support. It's awesome. If you are in the area, please come check this place out. This place is good for lunch and dinner. While I did have just the salad, there's other delightful dishes to try out. Please have a beer for me. I'd recommend this place for a good casual meal with friends or family. Or both. 4.0 stars for the entire experience. 3.5 stars for the ambiance and the service. 4.0 stars for the food. DO NOT WASTE your time or money. Pass the Globe, don't collect your $200 dollars, and head straight to Dooley's if you want a pleasant and delicious dining experience with great prices. While the food at the Globe is pretty great, you'll only know if you can manage to get someone to take your order and get it right. I have been there for food at least 6 times. The service is always questionable at best, but tonight it was just an epic fail. IMPORTANT NOTE: RYAN THE BARELY BARTENDER IS THE MOST FOUL, UNGRACIOUS PERSON I HAVE EVET MET. It was a Sunday night in June, so just a few scattered customers, but it still took 10 minutes for Tim, the BARELY BETTER THAN RYAN bartender, to even take notice of us, and we were seated at the center of the bar, in full view. Then it took 40 minutes to get a basket of fries, and an hour for our food because they "misplaced the ticket" for one hamburger. Didn't bother to tell us, while the rest of our order sat in bags for 40 minutes getting cold. I finally asked what was taking so long and was informed about the order screw up. Then we had to wait another 10 minutes to get our drink bill, which finally arrived with 3 extra cocktails charged. When I told RYAN THE FOUL that we were overcharged, he became immediately rude and offensive, saying "this is for the REST of your drinks!" When I told him he had charged us already on the food tab, he sneered and walked away and got Tim. It then took Tim TWO attempts to correct the bill, when all he had to do was take off the 3 extra drinks. By the time we got the bill for that, our food had been sitting for an hour. We got home and everything we ordered was soggy. And we ordered $200 worth of food. When I called to complain, Ryan hung up on me. So I walked back over and explained in person that all the food was soggy and Tim was not apologetic at all, but in fact responded with irritation and disrespect. I WILL NEVER go back. The only person there who is decent is the hostess Andy, but that poor girl can't possibly carry the weight of her coworker's incompetence and ill-mannered attitudes. We hit up this place last night for a couple rounds of drinks after dinner. It served its purpose. There's a wide variety of beers on tap and in bottle, as well as wine by the glass and bottle, and a big selection of scotch. Head up to the bar and you'll see it's full, as well. I got a a top shelf gin and soda for $10 including tip. That seems like a good deal, but it was stupidly light on the booze. If you're just ordering drinks, it's one of those walk up to the bar and pay places, which was fine. They were cool with our group of 5 just hanging out for a couple hours, and why shouldn't they be? I dont know who could have possibly given low scores to what is the greatest bar in the United States. My wife and I had our first date here 15 years ago, it is an Athens institution...a place for happy hour which draws pretty much anyone in the know about Athens...journalists, politicians, etc etc. It is also a hipster hangout, a graduate student and professor hang out, and it has fantastic wines, beers, scotches. I used to have a beer, read my class material, and sit in the rocking chairs in the front. sorry, but the Globe is not a place you just dive in for a drink and leave. I did what any good traveler does when I needed a drink and a little snack. I looked around for where the people were. I saw a small crowd in The Globe, I like the look of it so I went for it. I wasn't disappointed! The rustic-yet-not-overreaching ambience is perfect for the quieter crowd--erudite grad students, and corduroy professors sharing an interesting thought or story over a slow drink. Pleasantly devoid of adrenaline-fueled guzzlers and shouters, The Globe offered a much more laid back and mature atmosphere. I don't mean that in a bad way--this bar seems to cater those who enjoy imbibing at their leisure. I was marveled to see the wall of scotch stacked like decadent bricks against the bar, adjacent to another wall of wine. We pulled up to a table and draft menu. Not a bad beer selection either; however in a place like this, in a town like Athens I would have expected a bit wider variety. I wouldn't expect a Bier-Tap-Mega-Garden, but with as many interesting craft beers available, including so many coming from the area, I was a bit surprised to see it under-represented Within an hour, the bar filled up for the dinner rush, I was happy to see a large diverse crowd. It must be a testament to the bar because there were so many people they quickly ran out of room to sit down. The bar is sit-as-you-come, so it's easy for a place to fill up quickly. After a while, my girlfriend and I decided to order--I like pubs, and I like their fare even more. I would even go so far as to say it's my favorite. Everything seemed reasonably priced, the fish and chips were reasonably priced--$9 instead of a normal $13-14; my girlfriend's chicken salad sandwich a moderate $9 as well. But when I'm already paying a good price for a good beer or scotch, and I'm willing to settle down for dinner two, I hope that the meal lives up to the price. The fish, a little over-done. The Chicken Salad Sandwich seemed to be on par with a home recipe. They weren't bad, but I look for wow-factor and the food just wasn't quite there. None of this is to say I wouldn't return. This place is uhhhh-mazing for brunch. They have $5 mimosa or bloody mary special, as well as a banging vegetarian burger. I ordered the BOCA burger which is actually really, really tasty. Prices are also very reasonable. My entree was just $5 and I think my boyfriends was $6 or $7 for a pretty large portion. Not too shabby. We sat outside which is a decent place for people watching. I've eaten at the Globe plenty of times, and I have to say that it's definitely one of my Athens favorites. I think that they are especially good for lunch. The sandwiches, like the BLT or the Reuben are some of my favorites. Their burgers are also a solid choice. My typical order is a half sandwich and soup. I've also greatly enjoyed the beer selection there. They have a good variety, but not overwhelming. All in all The Globe is a great choice, especially for the price you pay. read more

Really lovely place on a Sunday evening. Great ambiance; warm and cozy. Everybody there seemed to be regulars, or at least very comfortable. Sat at the bar near the fireplace and enjoyed a Guinness with live Irish music casually playing in the corner. I mean this in an endearing way, but I felt like I was downstairs on the Titanic. Only complaint, my Guinness was served in a regular pint glass which is a pet peeve of mine. The Globe has the rudest staff you will ever come across. The food is just okay - not nearly as good as other options in Athens like Clocked, Expat, etc. After tipping at 20% or more every trip and bringing along a group of about 6 people with him, or me for a date, my boyfriend (who has been a *frequent* customer at The Globe) was told he wouldn't be served anymore because he "wasn't tipping high enough." I know this is not true. The waitress who informed him of this then proceeded to ignore our party for the rest of the night. If it weren't for the fact that my friends hadn't had dinner, and had already ordered before we arrived, we would've walked out. Needless to say, we will never be back. Beginning to end, worst experience ever. Spoiler alert: Roach in meal... we'll get to that. I ate outside with friends yesterday (July 16, 2015). The servers never came out to us once. We had to get up and go inside to order everything. We shared vegan chili nachos. The chili was good, but the tortilla chips tasted straight out of the bag. Pretty small plate of food. It was overall eh. My house salad was actually really tasty, and I was happy about it, but came to regret it later. I took to-go a burger with side salad and a lava cake. I tipped about 12% since I basically served myself the whole meal, and I got a nasty look from the "server". I began to fear for my take-out food. I got it home and tried a bite of the lava cake. They had put ice cream on it, which was all melted. Who does that on a to-go order? Also, the cake was almost frozen, and it had no lava in the middle at all. It was so weird. Lava cake is supposed to be warm, with gooey lava in the middle. Not a cold chocolate cake with an empty hole in the middle and a pile of dripping cream liquid on top. I only ate a bite. Then I was nibbling on the burger, when I moved a tomato to the side and found a small, LIVING roach in my salad. That food had gone straight from the restaurant to my very clean hotel room and was tied up in the bag until I started to eat. The roach definitely came from The Globe. I threw out all the food immediately. Today, I went back and asked for a manager. There was no manager on duty--- what is up with that? I told a random bartender what happened and said I wanted a refund on everything from the nachos to the take-out. She glared at me and said, "So it was only in the salad but you want a refund on everything?" I said, "YES". Are you kidding me? She was so rude, she didn't even apologize or seem bothered at all (they must see roaches all the time in the kitchen). Wrote my name on a post-it and said a manager would call me. We'll see. Every single employee I encountered (and there were about 5 total since I had to keep ordering food from whoever I could find walking by the bar), was totally rude, lazy, and seemed very resentful that I was asking anything of them. Worst service. Roach in meal! No apology. Inconsistent food. DON'T GO. Update: The manager called and was very apologetic and did refund me my money. Alas, poor Globe! I knew it, Athens, an establishment of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy. It hath bore me on its back a thousand times, and now how abhorr'd in my imagination it is! My gorge rises at it... And that, with apologies to William Shakespeare, sums up my current feelings on the Globe. Circa 2002-2003, it was a great bar. Not just any Athens bar, but one known for "good" beers on draft, quality scotch and whiskeys and a wonderful wine selection. There were no "specials" like $1 Bavarian beer; there were no Bartender's "shot of choice" type drinks. If you didn't have the money to drink there, you didn't belong. It was popular with grad students, professors, and alcohol snobs. A small haven in Athens that did not include throngs of drunken college kids. It was beautiful once... But no more. They added food service, and as mentioned in previous reviews, the staff apparently never got the memo that they are a restaurant now. The service is adequate at best. The food, on the other hand, is excellent, although the kitchen is easily overwhelmed. They still maintain an impressive selection of draft beers (although it would be nice if they would feature new drafts instead of clinging to the same assortment year after year) and their wine list is excellent. I've no doubt that the move to food and Happy Hour was economically driven. But the measures they have taken to improve business seem poorly thought out. Consider the upstairs that they renovated and opened: Poorly designed, inconvenient, and with no bar or food service readily available. The bathrooms have gone downhill, and while functional (barely, at times), they need to be renovated. The whole place now carries an atmosphere of "we used to be great" and it permeates everything from the level of cleanliness to the accuracy of one's order. Let us not forget that this is the bar that Brickstore Pub was based upon. Go to Trapeze. They are what the Globe once was, and they do it way better than the Globe ever did. Which makes me sad, because I really, really liked the Globe. All things must pass, it seems, and the Globe with them. read more

AS CUTE AS THE FOOD IS BAD! The vibe is really cool and coming here must be all about the drinks because the food was a major fail. Let's start at the beginning: We walk in and see a sign inviting us to seat ourselves so we do. We review the menu and realize that it is very limited because it is a brunch/lunch menu. It is a few minutes before 3pm so we decide to wait for the dinner menu to go into effect. When the dinner menu is delivered, we realize that is is just as limited. We decide to just order the fritattas that come with a side salad. I select the veggie and my husband selects The one that comes with meat. In the mean time, we are delivered semi-cold water with no ice, our waiter is MIA, (but in all fairness, he was so incompetent that it was no difference from having him present). We are eventually delivered cold fritattas. My husband decides to eat his cold and I request to have mine warmed. Since the waiter could not be found, I had a random waitress warm the item for me. When it was returned, it tasted like rubber and had a pungent taste and smell. After taking a couple of bites, I realized that I just couldn't eat anymore and requested our bill and left. This was the most ridiculous situation ever and I should have left when the waiter disappeared the first time. I am sure that there are better eating options around the square but we had limited options because many places are either still closed for the holidays or closed on Sunday. I would not recommend this restaurant for eating and would advise you to make a better choice than we did. read more

I probably need to revisit The Globe some other time. I was starving before Twilight and ordered a burger with cheddar cheese and chips, but I probably would have chosen something different had the full menu been available. Though our server was generally attentive, he didn't ask how I wanted the burger cooked, so it came out well done, which isn't what I prefer. Of course, I still devoured it. My biggest complaint: there is only one bathroom available for each gender. At least they're accurately labeled with the singular nouns "Man" and "Woman." Boy do I have a love/hate relationship with this place. Based on food and atmosphere alone, I want to give it at least 4 stars. But the service is TERRIBLE! I've eaten at The Globe at least 8 times over the past few years, and while maybe 6 of those times we had mediocre experiences with the server, the other 2 times I literally WALKED OUT because we were being totally ignored. I think the number one downfall of the way this place runs is that there is no host or hostess keeping track of incoming patrons. No one seats you, often times the table you sit down at has not been bused from previous customers, and it doesn't seem as if the servers have any rhyme or reason as to who is in charge of what tables. Eventually someone will notice you and come bus your table, but you'll be lucky if it's not 15 minutes before your drink order is even taken. The first time I walked out was after we had flagged down a waiter numerous times, only to be given the "just a minute" finger over and over again. After waiting 20 minutes and never having anyone come over to bus the table or take our drink orders, we left. I'm sorry, but that's just completely unacceptable. If you're going to market yourself as a bar/restaurant, you have to get the restaurant part down! People are not going to put up with that. The second time we walked out was for a similar reason- 20 minutes of being completely ignored. If you stay long enough to be served, good luck getting refills or having anyone pay attention to you at all once you have your food. That being said, the food is delicious. I always get the Twin Diner Burgers, which are about the size of a Krystal burger and you have the option of ordering one or two. They're really cheap and come with pickles, mustard, and onions. Yum! The Globe Chips are also out of this world and oh-so-terrible for your arteries. They also have a great selection of beer. Hopefully that explains my low rating. The Globe was my crew's first stop during the Twilight bike race. Because we started rather early, I slowly sipped a couple mimosas, eventually ordering a black bean burger with a side salad--both surprisingly tasty. Our waiter said they serve a limited menu on game days and during Twilight, increasing my curiosity about what the full menu entails. I tasted my sister's Pimm's Cup: mediocre compared to other Pimm's Cups I've had. I prefer for my Pimm's Cups to contain fizzy soda water, swimming with lemon and lime pulp. This one sat flat in the glass. The map wallpaper, wood walls and overwhelmingly wood interior substances weren't too dark, perhaps because of ample sunlight. I can't tell you that you'll love it here. I also can't tell you it won't be the best place you've ever been. It may very well be! That said, I can tell you my take on it. Keep in mind that that's what I'm about to do... I only sorta dig it here. It is a middle-of-the-road late night bar with a happy hour and a lunch/dinner burgers and fries menu. Not a dive. Not a pub. Not a dance venue at all. Not really a lounge. Just sort of an amalgamation of bar with stools during late night hours plus tables for food during evening hours plus sofas for relaxing plus outside patio for smoking. Anyway, it is an older crowd when compared to the college bars. I never would have wanted to be seen here as an undergrad. I think the clientele seems either classy or indy, middle-age or emo. Great for chilled wine with a friend. Bad for getting wastey-faced and hooking up. read more

As part of my weekend trip I had wanted to check out The Globe as it came up on a beer search online, and I'm a beer man. Sadly we weren't able to get to it on Saturday, so Sunday (today) we went by. To begin the website says the open at 11am, they actually open at 11:30am, forcing us to kill 30 minutes walking around. Secondly they serve a brunch menu on the weekends, so we couldn't peruse the regular menu and get something from it. Third, it's 11:30am on a Sunday, no beer sales for an hour. Dammit. The atmosphere though is pretty nice, very rustic feeling, with lots of wood. The food we did have was very good, I was just left wanting more since I didn't get the full experience. Great, great, great little pub. Here you can escape the usual loud and raucous college scene that is inevitably at every other bar in Athens. Very good beer selection with a decent menu. I will say it has been a while since I have eater here so I can't go into details about the food other than I remember it being good. This place always makes me think back to my study abroad in London and I love to hang out here with my London buddies and relax at a quiet booth and just talk. A definite must in Athens. read more

The last time I went to the Globe (mid-December), I was really impressed...for the first half of the experience. Several friends and I stormed the place for a birthday get-together and took over one of the comfy corner setups (big leather couch, rocking chairs, coffee table). The waitress was not at all daunted by the size of our group and didn't mind at all when we all got up at once to snag a nearby, suddenly free table my beau spotted. She took our drink orders and delivered all 10-15 beverages within a lightning-fast time. She remembered I didn't want ice in my water, which always makes me like a server that much more. (Most of them take my order and then return with a freezing glass nearly full of ice--brrr!). After claiming the big table, we ordered our dinners and commented to one another about how smoothly everything was going and how good the service was. I dorkily contemplated my upcoming Yelp review, wondering if I'd deliver four or even five (!) stars to this oft-overlooked dinner spot. But then the wait. began. We waited a really long time for the food. Stomachs were growling, people were laughing, and no one was getting sore about it. But when two people at the table got their food and then NO ONE else did for 15 more minutes (at least), we got a little frustrated. (Turns out those two ordered their food at the bar--smart kids.) Eventually plates of lukewarm- to-warm food came out. My friend who'd ordered a slice of cake was informed (40 minutes AFTER ordering, once everyone else had their meals) that there was no cake after all. Boo hoo. The taste of the food was pretty good. The price? Just right. The service? Friendly and efficient. I'd imagine the holdup is just in the kitchen. Get it together, Globe! You have lots of customers! I wish I could argue with some of the less-than-stellar reviews on this page. I have such fond memories of the Globe of yore--before they made the colossal mistake of adding food to their repertoire. Ever since then, the Globe has been on a steady trip down hill landing them in an awkward spot that I can only describe as "confused." Are they a restaurant or a bar? Should you wait for a server (good luck), or belly on up? Don't get me wrong, the beer selection is phenomenal; it's the service I take issue with. I can't comment on the food because I've never actually had the opportunity to order any as the only time a waiter has ever approached my table has been to remove the condiments. Go figure. It is difficult and pointless, I've discovered, to try to explain the "old Globe" to friends who have never experienced it. They just don't get why I like the place. Deep in my heart, though, I feel that my affection for the Globe has got to be more than just nostalgia; it is, after all, an excellent space with a distinctive "pub" feel. All this being said, I would still recommend the Globe to a stranger. On Friday afternoons, when it's relatively quiet, and the bartenders have just put out the happy hour bread and cheese, the Globe is a truly wonderful spot to sit with friends and enjoy a few pints. read more

Cool and funky Athens pub...I haven't seen all of Athens night life...YET...but this place makes me want to try... Cool and Funky Hipster vibe that appeals to ALL age level's. Super friendly and helpful staff (To explain their diverse drinks menu)...really...for Georgia they seem to have all of the world covered in the drinks and cordials department. Great selection...I turned my friend on to some Lam-beck here...our bartender was soo helpful in explaining all of the nuance's that make lam-beck different than a normal Malt beverage. Even for someone who knew the difference I was impressed.... Nice atmosphere... for a snobbish 40's something sophistical thinking person that thought Athens wouldn't compare to my beloved NOLA...this joint made me rethink my snobbish ways... Great atmosphere...lovely bar. They serve food also...didn't try any but from what we saw nobody was complaining... read more

After a recent revisit to this place, I have to say that I still really enjoy my time in this bar. Years ago this was the place where I often saw the members of REM, had awkward conversations at the bar with people I did not understand, being a northerner for the first time in the south. Now though, I see the place differently. The lay out of the bar is comfortable, with plenty of room to sit in nice comfortable chairs, or stand around a well made and very clean bar area. The prices are a little higher than some of the dive bars around Athens, but I have zero issue with that as the niceness of the bar is worth the slight increase in price. FYI, the bathrooms are very clean, and a drink here just to use the bathroom on a night pub crawling Athens is well worth it. read more
