Glad I finally got to come and try this beautiful place since Chef Ryan told me about the restaurant at a friend's concert. Ordered the carpaccio and it was delicious! Saw someone else eating a fabulous-looking sandwich and yes, I did order it because I realized I've been eating children's-sized portions all day. Turned out to be the lamb sandwich that was great. Our server Poorna took very good care of our big group and I especially appreciate that she remembered me by name at the end to give me the right bill and receipt because everyone paid separately. Owner Anna also made an appearance and helpfully took a photo of my friend and I. Chef Ryan wasn't there tonight but he has designed a wonderful menu! Attended a private event upstairs. It felt like a speakeasy having to walk back into the kitchen to reach a flight of stairs to get to the private space upstairs. Great ambiance, lots of greenery in the space. Strong lighting upstairs, which made for bad photos. Would prefer diffused lighting. There's a bathroom upstairs too. I got a drink at the front counter after and while the baristas were super friendly and helpful when I debated between flavours, the order took about 10+ minutes to make since there were a few drinks ahead of me. I really did enjoy my drink, I tried one of their fall seasonal ones. It was pricier than their regular offerings at $8+. It's super cosy, but they must have been short staffed because the 45 minutes I was there, no one came to clear the dirty dishes at the long communal table. read more

A nice surprise find in East Hastings area. Lots of green plants, mini art pieces, and a section dedicated to a cute artisanal shop. Really great ambiance to chill and catch up with friends. We had just eaten so just got some tea and chai latte. I wish the chai latte was stronger but this was definitely more a Western style take on the drink. A hidden oasis on E Hastings. Plants abound in the industrial but cozy interior. A corner is dedicated to a small craft and plant market. The tables have a 1 hour time limit when it's busy. The food menu focuses on local and organic ingredients. The menu is almost entirely vegetarian save for a ham and cheese sandwich, and within those vegetarian options, many are vegan or can be made vegan. I ordered the 'chiken' salad sandwich ('chiken' made from soy curls), an oatmeal chocolate cookie, and a Hoochy Booch bellini kombucha on tap. The sandwich was great! The finely chopped soy curls in the salad had a great texture, and I loved the flavour pop from the cranberries. The sourdough bread was also excellent. The cookie was good - it was made with shredded coconut in addition to oats which made it crunchy and which I wasn't expecting, so it wasn't exactly what I hoped for, but if you like that texture, this would be great. read more

Just a gorgeous little cafe/shop. It's worth noting it's open during this difficult time, and they are following distancing rules. So gold star for that. They also have a great takeout menu for food! On my last visit I snagged a few of their outrageously addictive chewy vegan chocolate chip cookies and grabbed a tea and coffee to go aswell. The Garden Strathcona is in it's name, a Garden! The interior of this place is absolutely stunning. There are plants everywhere, a little mini shop, and a beautiful studio space to rent. A friend and I took a visit here on a super rainy day. I got the Mocha, and she got an oat milk latte (a plus is that the milk substitutes come at no extra charge!) the coffee we both had was delish! The reason I'm not giving 5 stars, the food and treat selection is minimal. It is high quality (I had a salted chocolate chip cookie, which was super yummy). I wish there were a few more options. Awesome place with one of the best vegan tofu scrambles in town. We stopped in for a late breakfast during the week and were impressed at the setup of the place, especially since it's in a not-so-great part of town. Semi-upscale feel to the interior, with limited seating, you order up at the counter and they bring your food out. They have lots of vegan options, including a build-your-own porridge, a tofu scramble, and lots of delicious-looking baked goodies. We each ordered the scramble ($14 plus tax), and a large drip (dark roast) coffee ($2.75 plus tax; comes with one free refill, which is nice). The coffee was really nice, one of the better breakfast coffee options I've had locally. The tofu scrambles came out in under 10 minutes and were sublime. The cashew creme and roasted poblano & avocado crema create a lovely, soft texture to this scramble. The black beans, tomato, and greens (green onion, parsley and kale, I think?) were added in excellent proportion. The bread they serve is fresh and hearty, drizzled with a little olive oil. Overall, a fantastic breakfast spot with tons of vegan options. We will definitely be back. Highly recommended. read more

Cafés that offer oat milk as their default "milk" or at no extra charge already receive extra marks from me! The coffee was very rich and smooth. The loaf and cookie were huge! 5/5 for the coffee and 4/5 for the pastries. From candles to books, they sell goods from other local businesses--they're a one-stop-shop. 5 stars across the board for this beautiful, aesthetically pleasing coffee shop and store. I popped in to grab a coffee and some grub and was pleasantly surprised with how pretty and modern it was in here; think industrial meets boho. Upon walking in you're greeted with lush greenery left and right. No wonder it's called The Garden. The ladies at the counter were super friendly and patient as I took a tad bit longer looking through the menu. Upon their recommendation, in addition to my large drip coffee, I got the vegan breakfast bowl, banana bread, and a jar of Mumgry chocolate peanut butter. When I say that everything was delicious, I. mean. everything. was. delicious. The vegan breakfast bowl took me by surprise and the "eggs" had such a strong resemblance to real eggs, I forgot till halfway through my meal that the whole thing was vegan. The avocado fresco sauce that topped it was the icing on the cake. Honestly, things I never knew I needed in my life: avocado fresca. The banana bread was also delicious, moist, and flavourful. I like to mix things up and try different things, but I'll likely get this exact meal again, it was that good. On top of a cafe, The Garden serves as a store that carries a variety of local goods ranging from accessories, jewelry, fragrances, candles, and cards. If I wasn't in a bit of a rush, I would've loved to browse more. Definitely adding this spot to my coffee shop rotation from now on. Thanks for a wonderful experience, Garden Strath! I came here for a cup of latte and bought a salty chocolate chip cookie. It was awesome! The exterior and interior are decorated very nicely with flowers and plants. The ambience was very comfortable that I would love to sit and enjoy my latte and cookie but I had to head back to work. The coffee shop has a high ceiling height. They are selling some merchandises in one of the corners. A barista who took my order was very friendly. She greeted, smiled and chatted with me. The latte tasted great. The cookie was even more delicious than ones that I bought at other coffee shops. I would never think of such a good coffee shop in this neighbourhood. There is street parking. The pricing of the coffee was average but the cookies cost more. It was $7.xx for both a latte and a cookie. It was a bit more expensive in this neighbourhood but in terms of quality, I felt it was worth the price. I would like to come back and try other beverages and pastries. read more

It was a busy Friday and my gf and I decided to spend the afternoon together... We were late starting our "date" so we decided to grab a late brunch... Our first choice was to go to Nemesis a coffee shop around SFU downtown... We were going to go to Costco and other locations so we decided to drive... low and behold as soon as we left the house we were stuck in traffic! It was about 2 pm on a Friday afternoon and stuck in traffic come on now!!!... I have the radio going and we learnt the cause... another Environmental Strike or Protest! Come on guys!!! I love our planet too, but isn't this getting a bit too much? I swear there must have been like 3 or 4 Environmental Protests downtown in the last month! What's really being accomplished? Traffic nightmares downtown and public garbage bins filled with Starbuck coffee cups and their plastic lids! Anyways, I decided to get out of downtown... we ended up at the Garden Strathcona. It turned out to be a pretty good coffee shop to hang out in. The coffee shop is in a shadier part of town. I was a bit apprehension at first but once I walked in I felt comfortable immediately. Maybe it's all the plants in the shop... it gives the shop a homey comforting feel. My gf ordered the Mushroom & Cheese Melt and I had the Cubans Melt... Both open faced sandwiches were really good and tasty! I found the clientele different than your regular downtown coffee shop. I think the clientele seem more down to earth and less pretentious... I have nothing to basis this on... just my overall impressions... The music in the shop was soft... and played as background noise not frantic and overwhelming. The Garden is a great place to actually carry on a conversation with the person next to you! That's so rare these days! We stayed talked and rested for over an hour. In summation, we would come back to the Garden to have a coffee and relax. It's a little off the beaten path, but the food and atmosphere is worth the journey! read more

"Chicken" Sandwich (5/5) Very flavourful, umami filling like a chicken salad. The tomatoes added a refreshing element to the creamy, heavier components of the sandwich. Bread was nice and buttery and crisp on the edges. Wish there was a bit more filling, maybe some greens, but still super delicious. Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie (5/5) Super delicious. Crisp on the outside and chewy from the oats and toasted coconut shreds on the inside. I'm normally not a coconut fan but this was amazing. Good amount of chocolate chips and tastes naturally sweetened (maybe maple or agave syrup?) Kale Caesar (4.5/5) Caesar dressing was tasty and the croutons were nice and crispy. Wish the kale was massaged more as it was a little bit tough. Would also like to see some toppings on the salad and not just croutons to make it less one-dimensional. Greens were fresh and the amount of dressing was adequate. Espresso Chocolate Cookie (4/5) A good chewy cookie. Flavour was more subtle (coffee taste was very mild) but I liked how the chocolate chips they used had a hint of caramel flavour. Texture was good but the espresso beans on top are pretty much just for show because they don't taste great. Recommend you pick them off before you eat. Butternut Squash Soup (3/5) This was okay. Flavour wasn't my favourite (maybe it's the black pepper?) but the thickness of the soup was good and not too watery. read more

I've been here at least 4 times and I haven't gotten the opportunity to try everything I want to try. That being said, their regular chocolate chip cookie is AMAZING: I don't consume dairy, and this cookie is vegan. Vegan or not vegan, this is the best cookie I've ever had. It's also huge: could be a meal in itself. Which leads into my other point: I got the Mushroom Bowl, and although it tasted really good and looked nicely presented, I felt as though the portion was quite small. Absolutely stunning cafe that definitely makes you forget about it's proximity to the seedy downtown eastside. The interior space is well decorated and I find it very relaxing whenever we're here. The staff are always friendly and they make great lattes. I've had lattes with both regular milk and oat milk (no extra charge!) and both drinks have come out great. The oat milk latte was surprisingly delicious with a slightly nutty aftertaste, but nothing that overpowers the flavour of the coffee. The Garden has become my go to spot for coffee whenever I'm in the area and I don't see that changing anytime soon. read more

Came here with my bf on a Sunday afternoon during the long Easter weekend. What a lovely cafe! It had such a cozy and nature like atmosphere. My bf and I sat at the secluded area at the back by the metal bars where there were several plants hanging about. I really liked the way they hung their plants because they were exposed plants that had no pots underneath so it was very natural and provided an outdoorsy vibe. I also really liked their huge lamp at the back because it was covered by tons of twigs which was very rustic and neat. My bf and I both had their dark roast drip coffee which was quite tasty and not too acidic. The great thing about their drip coffee was that they were unlimited refills if you decide to stay in. Toasted Banana Bread (one of the specials on their menu) - This was amazing and worth it!! It was a thick slice of banana bread that was toasted, then there was a layer of espresso cream cheese smeared on top, and it was finished off with a sprinkle of cocoa nibs and a drizzle of honey. What a delicious combination! The edges of the banana bread was crispy while the interior part was super moist and fluffy, and not too sweet. The espresso cream cheese was light and creamy while the cocoa nibs provided a nice crunch and a dark chocolate flavor which paired really nicely to the softness of the banana bread. Finally, the honey drizzled on top provided a nice touch of sweetness to the overall dish which balanced really well with the savoriness of the cream cheese and unsweetened cocoa nibs. (5/5) Salted Chocolate Chip Cookie - This was also very delicious! It was a thick cookie that was slightly crispy on the outside while the inside was very gooey and tender. The salt sprinkled on top helped cut the sweetness of the cookie. I liked that they used dark chocolate wafers rather than mini chocolate chips because they were bigger so you would get more chocolate out of it but unfortunately, there were only 3 chocolate wafers in the cookie. (4.5/5) Overall, staff was friendly and cafe was very inviting. Coffee was tasty and unlimited whereas their pastries were to die for! Such a sick spot. Open and spacious so plenty of light can come in, doesn't pull the biggest and busiest crowd around 1-2pm when I arrived, and the americano misto with oat milk and vegan chocolate chip cookie was so good. Also is decked out with plenty of local goods (i.e candles, pins, organic perfumes/deodorants, etc). Purchased myself a $30 candle, can't wait to light it. Friend also got the mushroom bowl with an added egg and I had a taster-can say I would definitely get it for myself. Will be back again to try the other goods and get some work done in that lovely space. Perhaps tomorrow, most likely tomorrow. A1, splendid time, gold star. read more
