Ok, let's start with the fact that the place we normally go in Oakdale was closed due to their new winter schedule. Anyway, we were headed back to Modesto when my wife brought up The Fruit Yard which was on the way back in the styx between Modesto and Oakdale. The only reason we knew about the place was due to the market they had held in the empty lot behind it a few months back. It was in the styx, so I did not really set any expectations but my wife wanted to try it. So we headed in with our two youngest girls.
They asked whether we wanted to sit in the restaurant side of things or the buffet. After I found the buffet was $24.99 a person I did a step back for a min and stated Oh my god!, what buffet anywhere is 24.99 a head? My stupid ass was thinking Buffet = Golden Corral. So we went to the restaurant, but was curious about the buffet. So while they were deciding to order I went to go check it out. It had basically everything on the menu over there. Okay I thought. Either way, couldn't afford that, so i went with the regular menu.
The place was very nicely put together and we were seated away from population which I actually preferred. Our waitress was from idaho and very attentive. I ordered the fried chicken and salad bar. My wife ordered the Reuben on marbled rye and the kids, well, got kids food. We also ordered some Mozzarella cheese sticks as appetizers. Mind you, we were still not having high expectations of the place.
I always order Mozzarella cheese sticks anywhere we go, so let me start there: They were fucking amazing. Some of the best Mozzarella sticks I have tasted in the last 5 states I have been to. And let me say, that is saying a freaking lot. Granted I think the dipping sauce could have been slightly spicier, but other than that it just melted when bitten, but had a crunchy outside that was to die for.
The salad was next. Went to the salad bar and hooked up a pretty darn good salad. I used the low carb salad dressing as I was not entirely sure what it actually was but it was as close to Italian that I could see. It was. Let me just say that it was literally the freshest, best tasting salad that I have had in a seriously long time. Amazing!
The chicken didn't at first look very appetizing, but as I was keeping an open mind as the other food was so far spectacular, I took a bite, and WTF! That was some seriously good fried chicken. Now I think I understand why it is pricey as meals go. I was on the fence at first but am sold now with the quality of food overtakes the cost of the meal.
Look, check out previous reviews of mine as I am not one to put sugar on things. If I think they suck i will write all about it and not hold back. No sugar coating here either. These guys, if they can keep up to this standard have some spectacular food. Although, I think I initially offended the hostess as when I changed my mind from the buffet to restaurant, she looked kinda upset when I questioned the price. Man, if the buffet food is as good as the food I just tasted than it is totally worth it. Best food I have had from Texas to California.
if you got that significant other that you want to take to a nice quiet place, this is the place. Compared to places like Tahoe Joe's, these guy are A+ in my book and will go back with my wife alone next time to get some more expensive choices. Trust me, it's worth it. I can see them building a town around this restaurant. And I wouldn't be surprised. This has been my family's experience. read more
