Amending my previous review after my last interaction here on Saturday. My group of 5 arrived at 10:30, and we fully expected to wait. Apparently now, there no one managing the waitlist so you have to do their job and put your name on a piece of paper on the wall and then then sit around and wait. I am also aware the restaurant is small, but the issue for me was the fact that there was NO update given, or any attempts to communicate with my party for over 45 minutes. I've worked in many restaurants, and typically, you hold a table to push together etc. instead of repeatedly sitting small parties. When we approached one of the servers, she blew us off, saying that "she can't help that people sit there and conversate". Again, I understand that, but you could at least let us know you were working on it and not be completely dismissive and rude. Anyway, after almost an hour, we just left and went somewhere else. Obviously, they don't care about our money and only serve small groups. They should just be honest and say they don't take anyone with more diners than that. read more

I love the Fly Trap, but the PC police at Yelp reject my review based on comments they don't like. There is no profanity in my reviews and they actually received some compliments from others before they were taken down. I wouldn't trust any reviews on Yelp as they are not genuine. read more

My friend comes here often and so i came to try it. Its not bad but not great. The staff very good. Helpful and on top of things. The place looks nice. Its obviously an independent place., but that adds to ghe vibe. The issue I have is the food. Its not bad at all, and prepared well, but it seems most things are "their interpretation" or "deconstructed" version of things. I would rate this higher if i didnt need to make a bunch of special requests to order something here, and I totally understand this is also what many folks like here, but for somebody with limited diet options it can be a bit unsettling and uncomfortable. But I also need to say that the were also very accommodating and took my special requests gladly and delivered on them. If my friend are going here, I would still come back with them. read more

No wonder this place is rated so well everywhere. Amazing vegetarian options. Fresh ingredients. Perfect taste. friendly staff. We went here for a Sunday breakfast. The place was packed but the wait was not too bad, it was moving at a good pace. The wait staff was helpful with her suggestions and explaining each item. We got the Gingerbread pancakes - very good. Crispy and soft inside, the warm syrup was good as well. A forager - was a good veggie omelette. Nothing too special but was good. The potatoes was amazing. The toast was different and the jelly - wow tamarind and berries. What a combination. Heuvos Rancheros - wow. An amazing breakfast. We loved it. It goes amazingly well with their jalapeño sauce. Make sure you try all of their hot sauce options. They are crazy good. I bought a bottle of each. $5 bucks a pop little expensive but that's ok. They have daily special on the board, make sure to consider them before seeing the menu. They are unique. The facility is tight but cozy and well decorated. read more

Love this place. Attentive service, awesome food and location. Have been coming here for years. Wish it wasn't so busy!! But it's so good! I should probably preface (or finish ) this review with this: been here 15-20 times and I've only ever gotten two things. Crab cakes and eggs and Red flannel hash. Both are my favorites and so good that I fear to stray from those. Parking is paid only unless you can find a spot on the side street. Probably easier to park in the lot and pay the unusable Ferndale parking app. read more

Came with boyfriend around noon on Saturday. We came at a perfect time and got sat down at the bar. The restaurant and employees did a great job of wearing masks and social distancing for the tables and guests. The chose to order strawberry lemonade and ginger lemonade mimosa's and they warmed your belly real fast ordered the forager and c. chicken sandwich with tomato vinaigrette. Our wheat toast came with fresh strawberry basil jam. The mushrooms in the omelet were amazing and the tomato vinaigrette was wow a new taste but amazing! We were very impressed for our first time. We have missed out for years coming here. There was always a long line and we got lucky today. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. Excited to come again to try something new! I've heard about The Fly Trap for awhile as I've collected brunch places in the Detroit area to check out when we're over there. When our friends suggested we meet here, my boyfriend and I were pretty excited. The Fly Trap is a small place that seats about 62 people and usually is on a wait on the weekend. If you enter through the front, go to the back of the restaurant and write your name and party size on the big butcher paper roll. Our party of 4 waited about 20-25 minutes which wasn't bad. The Fly Trap specializes in "blunch" and you can get any of their breakfast or lunch items at any time of day, which I love. Breakfast is my favorite, so I went with the Forager (scramble with mushrooms, caramelized onion, smoked gouda, and greens) which came with toast and potatoes. I also ordered a fresh squeezed strawberry lemonade and a side of bacon, because why not. They do have a full bar so you can get a Bloody Mary or any other brunch cocktail you could think of! The Bloody Mary comes with a sidecar, which is always fun. Service was quick and friendly and the food was all great. The Forager was a great choice for me as I love caramelized onions. The gouda was pretty mild and the veggies were a nice touch. The potatoes weren't my favorite as I like them to be more uniformly done but it was nice to get them. The bacon was just okay - it was cold by the time it came out but it was nice and peppery. The lemonade was delicious! Really lemony and not too sweet. They have three kinds of housemade hot sauce which are really good as well as homemade jam in a squeeze bottle. I would definitely come back and try some of their other menu items! I wanted to be able to give this place 4 stars, but unfortunately for me it was a solid 3. We arrived around 1:30pm on a Saturday (July 4th weekend, though) and I assumed it wouldn't be that busy, but it was - we had about a 15-20 minute wait. If you were there solo or in a group of two, though, it was easier to get in - a few groups strolled in right in front of us because of that. They have an interesting system where you write your name + # of people in your party on a paper towel-esque thing on the wall, and then they call your name by looking at the list. The food was good - I got their chicken sandwich with lemon aioli and fried onions, and you could choose a side salad or fries with it; it was a large serving and $8.95 was reasonable for it. The sandwich was tasty but my fries were a bit too salty. My two friends got egg dishes and another friend also got one of the Bloody Mary's, which came with a teeny mason jar sidecar of beer, which was interesting. I'd come here again but maybe not on a weekend, the service was very slow and we were all hungry. The reason we came here, too, was that one of my friends saw that the restaurant was selected as the Michigan pick on an America's Best Diners list, on a brunch website (http://www.extracrispy.com/culture/221/50-of-americas-best-diners), and none of us had been there before. I'm curious now as to whom selected the Fly Trap for this, but I will say the food was very good. I had a sourdough BLT, was supposed to have Avocado but I requested that it did not. Pepper bacon, garlic aïoli. Nice combination. I paired it with the house salad with creamy herb dressing. I haven't been here in a really long time... But I would have to say this is by far on my top 5 list for breakfast and brunch! Yes, this is a wait if you go on the weekends. But it's totally worth the wait. I went with for of my friends, the place was packed. The staff was very nice to inform us on the status of our seating. The waitress we had was very friendly and very helpful. The other waiters and waitresses I've notice help each other out. GREAT TEAM WORK! Overall the place is very clean and very well kept up. I love the atmosphere in the Vibe of this place. I had the Huevos Rancheros Omelette. Very very very good! Loved the taste of it! I barely used any Sauce on it (Only on the last few bites). I was really excited to try The Fly Trap after reading a few reviews but it fell short of my expectations. I can see where people get confused on the seating when it's busy because as you walk through the front it's seat yourself unless it's busy and there's no where to sit. We sat in the back area across from the bar and it was enough room for two people but the restaurant isn't too big so expect a wait on the weekends. I ordered the BLAT+C which was good but I felt like it was missing something. The sourdough toast and homemade jam was really good and probably my favorite part of the meal. The garlic potatoes on the side were good too. My beau got the hamburger with American cheese and enjoyed everything but the bun. He said it tasted stale. Overall it was okay. I debated the red flannel hash but it seemed to have a lot of mixed reviews. With so many other great brunch places nearby, I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to have breakfast here. read more

Lots of good vegan options, and they aren't simply a Mediterranean wrap or a sad little side salad, which many restaurants seem to think are the only two dishes vegans eat. Best breakfast spot in town! By far! We normally go early bc there is limited seating! The place has funky decor including realistic fly drawings and other interesting artwork! Sunday brunch review per usual! The husband and I came here for the first time and first thing I noticed was the awesome wall decor! It's drawn photos of flies doing typical human activities LOL. The way the waiting list works is pretty cool. You sign yourself in on a white rolling paper and write how many people are in your party and you basically just wait your turn. We waited for about 20 minutes which isn't bad for a Sunday late morning! Our names were called and we got seated at the bar. Pauline was our waitress/bartender and she was the nicest! The menu doesn't have a HUGE selection but the options sounded delicious! I got the gingerbread waffles with sautéed apples and my husband got the Charles Bukowski which is a Sunday special. He absolutely loved it! My waffles were decent. The flavor was good, but my only complaint is that there was no "wow" component. No crunch or anything so it tasted pretty bland to me. I would definitely recommend to the chef to add a crunch element to the meal. Now to Pauline, the waitress! She was amazing!! She was the waitress/bartender/hostess. She seriously played every role yet was so attentive to every need of her customers at the bar. She gets FIVE stars! We got our receipt and it was SO sweet that the restaurant deducted off the coffee and OJ because "we love you!!" - refer to the receipt! The restaurant in itself gets 4 for the lack of flavor with the waffles. We'll definitely be back though! Just not for the waffles! read more

Solid vegan breakfast scramble. I stopped in around mid-morning for a quick breakfast on a Wed morning. Many dishes on the menu are vegan-modifiable. I ordered the vegan root veggie hash, which comes with plenty of veggies, potatoes, and choice of bread for $9.95++. Bottomless coffee rounded it out. However, on a recent visit, the two-room dining area was more spacious than I remembered. With a tin ceiling and exposed ductwork, the restaurant has a spare, nondescript aesthetic. For a late morning meal, I enjoyed the Red Flannel Hash which included smoked brisket, similar to pastrami, and finely diced, well-seasoned, tender potatoes. With sunny-side up eggs, the yolks flowed freely onto the potatoes adding an unctuous texture to the meal while the beets and fresh green onions added depth and flavor. I also enjoyed a side of well-seasoned breakfast sausage links. I am typically not a fan of raspberry jam but loved the care and attention that went into making the tasty raspberry-lime jam that accompanied the chewy sourdough toast. Service was fine. read more

So Saturday was my first time visiting, ----) trendsetter fo sho, and when our server asked if I wanted jam for my toast I quickly piped a NO because we were at a tiny table and I didn't see room on our table for one of those "jelly hotels"...luckily my friend who had been before said she wanted jam...and damn that jam was the slam!! Listen, no Sam I am, but this place even has green eggs and ham...and a full bar too...and great coffee... In short it's just a really authentic and inventive place for breakfast... We paid $5.00 to park in the back. We arrived around 1pm on a Saturday. We were seated right away. The service was very good. I ordered coffee which was strong and smooth. It was very hot and muggy outside causing my bare thighs to sweat on the hard wooden chairs...TMI, sorry! My sister liked the fact that it was like eating outside due to the layout and large opening leading to the outside but because it was so muggy outside I was craving air conditioning. My sister had a Cheapsteak sandwich which she thought would be like a Philly steak sandwich but it was like cutting a decent steak in two and putting it between a bun. The steak was good but it lacked real flavor and you had to really chomp down to bite off a piece of the sandwich. She liked the skinny steak fries. I had the burger with cheddar cheese. The burger was big, cooked well and served with lots of fresh items like red onions, lettuce and tomato. I had the salad with my burger and didn't eat it because it was served warm with wilting lettuce. I like my salad crisp. My sister thought the dressing tasted good and didn't mind that the salad was warm. We also ordered the crab cake appetizer. The cakes were mushy but tasted pretty good. Overall the food was of high quality. Most of the items were pretty out there or spicy that is why we ordered more traditional faire of steak sandwich and burger. I have no complaints about this place but also there's nothing here that would pull me back in. read more

I'm pressed. Diners in Ferndale don't compel me to have high expectations. I like diners and I like Ferndale but that doesn't make a happy relationship. I was invited by my Assistant Director for my last play. Julie did me right. I reviewed the menu with a skeptics eyes. Julie assured me that, this being her favorite spot, I would definitely enjoy most of the options. She ordered her usual, the Red Flannel Hash which on the menu wasn't appetizing to me. On delivery to the table my mind was changed and my mouth watered. I've never wanted, enjoyed or cared for traditional hash. This broke boring tradition. The juicy meat hunks, oozing egg, fresh green onions, crispy potatoes made me desire for more. I ordered the french toast which is not my typical breakfast griddle fare but the menu was word porn for someone who likes flavor adventures. I made the right choice. As much as I lusted Julie's hash, I enjoyed the love on my tongue. I didn't need much of the real syrup they served. Fruit toppings dressed the full flavor toast that didn't require a bath of syrup. This was all I had for food and I was more than satisfied. Extensive tea selections made my tisane heart dance. Honey, lemon and loose tea steeping in a beautiful teapot created an experience to keep me returning. The pricing was more than reasonable, the service was excellent, the bar was accommodating and the view with the garage doors up-uplifting. I'm ready to go for more. read more
