We went back - a friend was coming into town from Florida, and I was thinking of this place, raving about the Tenderloin Souvlaki and how good it was. But, it's no longer on the menu. Okay, that's a disappointment. He went with the non-Tenderloin souvlaki, and I had their gyros platter. The gyros was good. The regular souvlaki was okay. The general theme of the restaurant is the same - that Greek Isle ambiance. The service was the same. Just the best item on the menu - GONE. Along with my return business apparently. read more

We were looking for something different for dinner tonight, so we tried The Flame for the first time. I am having some conflicting thoughts about the place and experience, so will break it down. Food: 5/5. The waitress was nice, made some recommendations on food and drinks. Diner included delicious bread with real butter that was nicely whipped and the lemon chicken soup was delicious. Meals were Combination platter (chicken and pork skewers, the other gyro platter). Also included lemon potatoes. The food was delicious, well seasoned, well cooked and tasted delicious. Service: 5/5: our waitress was nice, she made some good recommendations about dishes and drinks. Atmosphere: 1/5: Our meal started out fine, but the atmosphere plummeted as the night went on. The bar tender (Justin) ruined the night. He loudly complained about the staff to a friend of his at the bar, dropping several loud F bombs. We learned the drama of everyone who worked there along with other restaurants in town; not something that anyone wants to listen to. Understandable that every job has positive and negative sides with ups and downs; but have the decency to keep it to yourself while paying customers are there. Would I go back or recommend? Chicken skewer excellent. Cooked to order fresh so being patient is required. Ordered the trio appetizer to try their hummus, Tzatziki, and roasted feta. For me personally could have had more flavor. Felt like I was just eating Greek yogurt in the Tzatziki. Roasted potatoe looked beautiful but again heavy on olive oil and lacking seasoning. Loved the Greek salad but personally I like my salad all tossed in the dressing for me not on the side. Just what DeKalb needed! Great food, comfortable atmosphere, attentive staff, downtown location- this place has it all. We were told it's only been open two weeks and it was packed and there was a line, we sat at the bar and had excellent service. Rolls are delish and come with soft butter - and I totally judge a restaurant on the temperature of their butter so I knew we were in for something good already! Definitely spend the extra $ and get the Greek salad, it's so good. Husband had the chicken and he said it was juicy and didn't say much else because he was busy eating. I had the Greek spaghetti with meat sauce (because I saw a pic of someone else who had it online and it looked so good) and it was a delight and a huge portion. Is the Flame under new management? This is/was our favorite restaurant but based on our experience yesterday we may have to revise that opinion. It took quite some time before we saw a waitress and the place was not busy at 5 pm. The fellow who brought our water and rolls was on the job, though. When our food came my wife's salmon was great as usual but my gyros platter was luke warm and so it was cold by the time I finished. My guess is that the gyros was ready before the fish and had to wait to be served. As my wife said, it just didn't seem like the same well run business. Hope it was just a bad night. read more

Fast friendly service and some of the best Greek food Ive had. Spicy feta was a particularly tasty appetizer and the sauce on the Santorini Shrimp, same as the Greek spaghetti, was amazing with complex flavors. This will be a regular stop anytime we're here to visit our son at NIU. read more

The gyro sandwich is the best tasting that I have ever eaten. I love this place. The prices are reasonable, you can have a lunch for around $40. The restaurant has a big screen that displays Greece landscapes which is a nice touch. I get grilled onions on the gyro rather than non cooked onions. These were just a little bit better the Tom and Jerry's or Uncle Nick's (Rockford). read more

There are two issues with this place. The first issue is that it didn't open 10 years ago when we moved here from Chicago. But I'm happy it's here now! The 2nd issue is the owner is going to need a bigger place because The Flame just took 1st place for best food in DeKalb County from this food critic. We showed up at 5-ish on a Saturday and it was packed. We waited at the bar for 5 minutes for a table. The Saginaki came quick, on fire, and was a tremendous portion! I ordered the mixed grill, which was delicious, as good as any I've ever had in Greek Town. The portions were large, and the service was quick. The full plates run $22, but it was worth every penny. I'm sure this restaurant will thrive and survive as it just made the top of my list of places to eat. read more

Today, my husband and I visited The Flame for the first time and were delighted to discover that it lived up to its positive reviews. We are big fans of the Greek Islands, but the drive is prohibitive when we just crave a quick lunch nearby. Javier greeted us in a welcoming manner, and as our server proved to be both efficient and helpful. The decor was classy and artwork was harmoniously arranged across the blue and white walls. We settled into a booth which was very comfortable for the two of us and ordered a spicy feta spread (tirokafteri) to start our meal. It arrived quickly and surpassed our expectations for taste with just the perfect amount of heat. The accompanying pita triangles were warm and fluffy. Mmmmmm. My entree was a favorite of mine, pastichio, which came with a large bowl of egg lemon soup. The soup was hot and flavorful, and the pastichio, which arrived in an individual-sized cast iron pan was impressive, not only for its size but its taste. It was as good or better than I've had, and I've had many examples. It stayed steaming hot but not too hot to truly savor the layers of flavor. The béchamel was luxurious. Sipping my dry roditis in between bites rounded out what was a satisfying nosh. And, needless to say, I happily brought home leftovers. My husband's souvlaki pita, he claimed, was stellar. One small critique. Acoustics. But, we left smiling with plans to return to sample more dishes on the impressively comprehensive menu. So happy to have The Flame in town. read more

Food was average or above, but the service was very slow (the place wasn't busy, three tables and two servers). Then the server became almost hostile. Maria G. became Aggressive and mean. Place is very small & opened recently, so we got here early (around 4:45) & were seated right away at the last available table. The rest of the time several groups of people were standing in the waiting area (which is right up against a few tables) The bread they bring out is DELICIOUS & the soft & real butter is also great We all got the Avgolemono soup which is basically chicken with rice soup except it has egg yolks in broth & like most everything else in this place loaded with lemon flavor. Soup was not great for me as I'm not a big egg yolk or lemon fan. I had the Gyros platter. It was just a Gyros with less pita than the regular gyros for more $. Pita was cut into triangles so building a sandwich was difficult with big chunks of tomato & meat. It came with their 2 potato wedges drenched in lemon sauce, we ate 2 bites of each & left 4 wedges on the table. Wife had tenderloin pita (souvlaki) which she said was fine One kid had Greek rib chops- which was just 2 pork chops with the overly lemoned potatoes. Chops we juicy & not dry another had the gyro which was good with fries-had no taste. last kid had the Spartan chicken on spinach which would've been good except for the excessive lemon sauce that was overwhelming. I guess if you love soggy lemon sauce on everything, give this place a whirl Bill was $126 B4 tip for 5 dinners & soda/lemonades. Finally we got our own Greek restaurant with a diverse menu of cooked to order traditional Greek dishes. Yay! When you open the door, you immerse right away in the warm ambiance of the Greek hospitality. The tastefully decorated dining room in traditional Greek colors looks very cosy and inviting. As the very first customers, we were welcomed with a shot of an excellent ouso. That set the tone of our overall outstanding culinary experience. The traditional avgolemono soup was very well executed and had a perfect balance of all flavors, the quality of cheese used for Saganaki dish was superior, the taramosalata had a great taste and was not overly salted which happens too often in the other Greek restaurants. I enjoyed very much my Greek sausage flamed table side which was perfectly grilled. The quality of the meet on my daughter's gyro platter was the best I ever tried in Illinois. My friend's made to order eggplant mousaka with its rich béchamel sauce was mouthwatering. We finished our amazing lunch with traditional Greek loukoumades. I get that it's Valentines day. Waiting 20 minutes for a bottle of wine in a 50 seat restaurant was a lot. Apps came out after soup and salad, meals were rushed. I came here with my mom and my sister a couple weeks ago for my moms birthday. We had the most delightful experience. Our server, I believe her name is Cindy, was the sweetest and so helpful! I hope i am getting her name right but she deserves a raise or something!!! Its a very small restaurant but i think that makes it better. The complementary bread was below average but at least it was warm!!!! Other than this, the rest of the food we ordered was perfect and i had a great time here. read more
