We recently held our son's rehearsal dinner here, and unfortunately, I was very disappointed with how our event was handled. I want to start with the positives: the food was excellent, and our server, Sam, and the bartender (I believe her name was Brooke) worked incredibly hard. They were pleasant, helpful, and truly did the best they could. My frustration is not with them at all--they were simply given far too much to handle. Neither was dedicated to our event. Sam was serving our party AND other customers in the restaurant, and the bartender was also responsible for our group and the rest of the restaurant. It took approximately 45 minutes for everyone at our rehearsal dinner to receive their first drink. The staff was stretched so thin that I found myself putting food out and bussing tables during my son's rehearsal dinner. When we arrived, there weren't even enough tables and chairs set up for our guests, so our family helped set those up as well. What was especially frustrating is that we paid an additional fee for an event coordinator, as well as a fee to use the space. I'm still unclear about what those fees actually provided. I would have expected an event coordinator to make sure the space was ready, adequate staff was scheduled, and the event ran smoothly. That was not our experience. I initially chose not to leave a public review because I wanted to give management the opportunity to address my concerns directly. I emailed them after the event explaining our experience and received no response. I resent the email twice and still received no acknowledgment or response. That lack of communication is ultimately what prompted me to share our experience publicly. Again, the food was excellent and Sam and Brooke deserve recognition for working so hard. But for a special event that included additional charges for the space and event coordination, I expected a much higher level of planning, staffing, service, and follow-up. read more

Best place to go in Sycamore for drinks along with some pizza of course. If your idea of a party is pigging out on pizza, while combining it with suds and cocktails, then this is the place for it. Pizza Beer Whiskey explains the entire menu it seems. Has a pretty large amount of basic and gourmet toppings to choose from. The prices are higher than the crap chains but it's much better tasting. Always busy. It's a pretty good sign that people like to come here. This is located pretty close to NIU so obviously the name is pretty easy to understand for even the thickest skulled of frat boys and other college students. A few words to get their attention. Have to speak the language of the locals. A crap ton of local beers. It's about $8 a pint. Splurge a bit more for some finely aged whiskey. It's about $18 for a medium pizza. That's kind of a lot but this isn't mass produced chain pizza though. Also you can get it with vegan cheese. This melts like the real stuff. We got one of the Sergeant Pepper pizzas New York style. Filling. This comes with arugula, black olives, cherry tomatoes, green peppers, mozzarella but we got the vegan substitute, mushrooms, and onions. Big enough for a couple. They have even bigger ones that are expensive but are good for parties. Crazy place for tons of good drinking and eating. It's located on West State Street. There's good options for meat eaters as well as vegans and vegetarians. read more

We have seen this place as we drove by, and I was intrigued, so we made a point to actually stop by and eat here. In terms of appearance, this place has it nailed. There were 4 or 5 large screen TVs on the walls, and a very nice bronze deer head which was wearing glasses and smoking a pipe, but the best part was it had a DeKalb County United (DKCU) scarf around the bronze deer head. If you haven't had the chance to watch a DKCU match, they typically play their home games at the NIU Soccer Stadium (east of the NIU Convocation Center), and they play quite well - so stop at Pizza Beer Whiskey for dinner, and then come on out and enjoy the soccer match! Back to the restaurant - we got in early, and on a Monday, it was pretty quiet. We were greeted and seated promptly, and selected a seat across from the bar. We were asked about drinks. We got a menu, a beer menu (around 6 pages, but large print with the drafts on the first page), a mixed drink menu and a whiskey menu. That's a LOT of menus. I ordered a Stillwater draft Kung Pao Stout, which was spicy with a bit of a Jalapeño finish. My wife ordered their Glen Moray Cab Cask scotch, which had a nice, smooth finish, and was a bit smoky (which you expect from Scotch). We ordered their Garlic Bites appetizer. It was HUGE - there was enough there to serve at least 4 to 6 people Bites wise. The cup of marinara sauce could afford to be bigger, but we stretched it out. We took a bunch of this home since there were only 2 of us. We ordered the Sycamore Supreme, which had their better sausage, pepperoni, green peppers, and other toppings on a very nice, thin crust. The crust was very good, and the toppings really made the pizza pop. My wife really liked the pizza - it was tasty and the crust was good. That just about covers it. We've been to this place 6 times. 4 out of the 6 the pizza was burnt and un eatable. Yesterday was the last time I'll go there. The 2 times the pizza wasn't bunt, I found it to be really good I'd recommend the Detroit style, if they ever get there shit together. I would imagine there are others that had the same experience: this place won't last long unless they figure it out. This is obv a well-loved local place. Its nice and spacious on the inside. The bar area (with all the whiskey and a ladder!) is impressive. We were seated in the very front window in a cute little booth in a nook. There was a bee flying around us but the staff quickly took care of it. Food was great, service was too! Our waitress knew the menu inside and out. Really enjoyed our meal. Side note: the women's bathroom was awesome! Usually there is no attention paid to the bathrooms but this one has such nice touches, clean, smelled good. Suitably impressed!! read more

We were there early on a Friday and beat the dinner rush. The food was really good. We got the garlic bites appetizer for the two of us, and were expecting a small plate or basket, and got this huge platter. We had to take at least half of them home. As the name suggests, they've got a wide selection of beers (and some meads and ciders), and a wall of whiskeys, plus a small list of other cocktails (not sure if you can just order something like a rum and Coke). Service - close to the worst we ever had. I suspect the hostess noticed us continuously looking at the time on our phones. There appeared to be a lot of servers, didn't look short staffed. After 18 minutes the hostess came up and ask if a server has been by. We said no, she said she would take our order. She brought out our waters. We had another lady bring us garlic knots and a guy bring us the pizza. So not sure who are actual person was. Food - we ordered 18 inch cheese pizza and garlic knots. Garlic Knots they do give you a lot as another person posted. They were OK. Like Pizza Hut or Domino's quality. The pizza is supposed to be NY style. The crust was crispy, which we like, but lacked flavor and the pizza was so floppy when we cut it and out it on our plate all the cheese slid right off. My husband said it reminded him of cafeteria pizza from school. Our son who literally eats any pizza didn't even really like it. We are fine paying $18 if the pizza is good, but it's like most places now days were the quality has gone down, and possibly finding a hard time to get an experienced cook. I usually let things slide if good customer service but that didn't even exist. Would not recommend. It's a shame because we prefer to support small independent restaurants. read more

This is a bar. I read a review on here where they said it was a wood fired pizza oven. It's not. I was thinking about ordering a pizza, but when I saw their over, conveyor type, I figured I could get that type of pizza at papa John's. I decided to just have a couple of beers instead. Service at the bar wasn't bad, but the rest of the staff seemed more interested in chatting with each other than taking care of their customers. Nice Devore, but very loud. I go out a lot. I would recommend this place for a beer and maybe a whisky, but not a pizza. I love pizza and life's too short to spend good money on a bad one. read more

Bartender was very friendly, and offered some excellent suggestions for my second beer after finishing my first. Lovely visit all around... We stopped into Pizza Beer Whiskey right as they opened a couple of Saturdays ago and had a fantastic experience! First off, the location is great as it's right by multiple shops so we were able to pop in to grab a quick drink and bite as we shopped around downtown Sycamore. The ambiance is really great - good mix of seating options and it felt very clean. We had a round of cocktails which were all delicious, the espresso-tini got us energized and ready to shop more! We loved the white cosmopolitan- a really light and fresh take on the traditional cosmo. Tons of great beer and whiskey selections. We tried their garlic knots which were INCREDIBLE. Hands down my favorite I've ever tried and the portion size was HUGE! There seemed to be one server in the entire restaurant and he did a great job of keeping up with the flow of people that continued to come in as they opened. I had highly anticipation of having a great pizza. unfortunately I didn't experience that. My first time trying Pizza. Beer. Whiskey. I order a small pepperoni, sausage and cheese pizza with extra sauce to go. The crust was uneventful cooked. The sausage tasted like it was pre-made from a bag, that was kept in the freezer. Pepperoni was OK and maybe the highlight of the pizza. The sauce was not bad plain and unoffending . And finally the cheese reminded me of, I think Papa John's or Little Caesar. Fabulous place to hold a private event! Hosted our son's rehearsal dinner at PBW in late August and it was great! Came in from out of town and stumbled on PBW while looking for possible venues. Staff was always responsive and helpful (shout out to Michelle at PBW), we could chose from PBW and other nearby restaurants for food options, bar had plenty of drink options. The 60 plus folks in attendance couldn't say enough about how much they enjoyed the evening. The event coordinator, Tabitha @illinoiscrafted, was so great to work with we ended up hosting a post wedding brunch at PBW too. I was highly disappointed in this place. Given Sycamore's reputation for friendly folks and quaint downtown businesses, I was excited to have a local pizza/brewery to replace the beloved Forge. Unfortunately I gave them the benefit of the doubt, as I waited for 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged me (I figured they were busy and new so I'd give them some grace). When I say "acknowledge" I mean a server asked me to get out of the way. Finally after another five minutes (and moving out of the way), someone asked me how they could help me. Since the name of the establishment has "beer" in it (I.e., pizza beer whiskey), I figured it'd be the perfect place to fill a growler. I was informed that they don't refill growlers but they could sell me a 4 pack of beer for $50. Not only have I never paid that much for a 4 pack (makes New York City look cheap!), but the bedside manner of the server was not even close to the charm and friendliness that Sycamore is known for- in fact, it was the antithesis- rude, annoyed, and flat out mean. Im very disappointed and frankly ashamed that our town has a business like this and I will not be returning nor recommending it to my friends. Let me give you an example, I asked the server what she'd recommend and she said "I don't even know what's on the list I only work here once a week". After that fumble, I tried to exchange niceties with the bartender and said "wow you're swamped!" And all I got was a scowl in return. Call me old fashioned, but when I asked for a beer list, she angrily shoved a QR code in my face. My husband and I shared the fried ravioli appetizer. So so good. We ate them all!! Even though we weren't trying to get full before dinner. My husband had a sycamore supreme pizza. He said it was delicious. I ordered a chicken bacon ranch sandwich and a side salad. So yummy. Connor took excellent care of us. Thanks so much for bringing this restaurant to Sycamore. We will definitely be back. We were told a lot of changes have been made from when they opened. If you tried pizza beer whiskey when it first opened and weren't pleased. Give it another chance. The pizza is good and varied. The apps are good and varied. The beer selection is good and varied. The service we had was good. It's not a super appealing place but it's not really unappealing either. It's local and I like that. There is no problem with the quantity or quality of the food. Everyone at the table was pleased with the food and drink and will go back. Some of our party have been back several times. It's not cheap, but what is? It's $45+ for three at McDonalds anymore. It's not over priced either for fresh made food and better than average beer, cocktails, and wine. The take out travels well too. I recommend you try it. After a holiday event this past Saturday, our group of 25+ went to Pizza*Beer*Whiskey for a meal, drinks, and conversation. Michelle, the restaurant manager, followed up by phone to confirm our reservation. In short, she wanted to make sure they would be prepared to host such a large group. Communication with Michelle was exceptional. Then, our main server, Morgan provided us with outstanding service. From taking drink and food orders to keeping tickets straight, she went above and beyond in service. Morgan was supported by Kendall and "the guys" in the kitchen. They all hustled to make our evening an enjoyable one. Plus, the food was excellent. This was consistent across the pizzas, sandwiches, and salads ordered. This place took FOREVER to open this past year. I'm not sure why. First, the good news; the food is absolutely fantastic! The wood fire oven pizza is perfect. We also had fried mozz. cheese starter, which was also very good. I am not fond of the beer menu: first you must open a menu app on your phone and then hunt. Why, when we were already given 3 paper menus for food and spirits? But, OK I found a nice porter. The whiskey choices were lacking and overpriced a bit. So... the bad news. We were not really greeted, the young girl did not bother to notice that my husband walks with a cane and is disabled and basically ran ahead to the very back most booth. No way. We chose to sit much nearer the front. She acted pissed. Our meal went well. But I hate to see the servers climb a wall to knock dust off shelves onto fresh pizza boxes below while I am eating. There were only 4 tables of customers, so I guess they wanted to clean? The place looks kind of blah except for behind the bar. the lighting above the bar flickers oddly. Surprisingly enough, I was looking for a Chicago style pizza when I walked in. Much to my dismay my hopes dimmed when I noticed it was New York or Detroit style. We decided to stay and try it anyway. We ordered a Detroit style (thicker crust) much to our surprise, there was ample sauce, cheese and toppings. No, it is not Chicago style but the flavor was there. Yes it is different yet delicious. The service, price and general setting were well above average. Even in the Chicago area I would recommend their pizza.
