Had some pretty good tapas from this classy but casual restaurant in DeKalb. It may be the nicest restaurant in town considering most places are full of loudmouth NIU students. Tapa La Luna is a place for those wanting cocktails and small bites to accompany these. Prices aren't bad. You can get a pretty good amount for a lunch. Chill place with a pleasant atmosphere. It's one of the nicer restaurants around here. There's a bar and quite a few tables. Has pretty simple drink and food menus. Seems like there's not a whole lot of choices but that keeps things running smoothly. It's about $8 for a cocktail. There's also specialty ones that cost more. It's about $8 for one of the tapas on average. We got the Thai Spring Rolls. In these are carrots and soy marinated cabbage. You can add a couple bucks to get portobello mushrooms. A few other things on the menu include pizza if wanting something more filling. There's many things that are meant for sharing. Good place to have a pleasant meal and conversation. It's one of those restaurants that closes between lunch and dinner, and it's closed on Sundays. The menu has a lot of variation among the options, and there's a few things okay for vegans and vegetarians.

Busy on a Friday evening around 7:30pm, for a table of 4, we lucked out and slid right into a table though! A very large, everything looks so good, menu, it was so hard to choose what to eat. Sadly everything was hit & miss. The bacon dates were pretty burnt, & charred, our friends said that was not normal. Peanut Chicken, OMG, that was so so good, highly recommend! The mixed & matched bruschetta plate, sounds fun, they were the planest bruschetta I'd ever eaten. The goat cheese appetizer, we couldn't finish, the tomato sauce was sooooooo acidy it didn't get finished. We ordered 3 sushi rolls, and only got 2. We ordered 2 different sets of sliders, the flavors were good, but the meat sliders were DRY DRY, wow, probably the worst sliders I've ever had. I ordered the sliders and the server asked if I wanted fries, and I asked if they were included, and he said yes, and they were not, they were an additional $5, and it said not included on the menu as well, so that was disappointing as well. Our friends took us that live in town, they mentioned it's always hit & miss unfortunately, and we definitely had a missssssss night.

Tapaluna is a really fun experience. I loved the variety on their menu, from sushi, to flatbread, and more. We tried the goat cheese roasted red pepper dip, it was soo good. Then we had the peanut chicken skewers which were also delicious, then the crab cake stuff mushrooms, which were our favorite. Then we ended the night with the the bread pudding which was okay, too artificially sweet in my opinion. Overall a great experience.

We made reservations for a Saturday night and we're happy we did. Our waitress, Abreia, was great and very friendly. The place has a very cool vibe and had choices for tapas, sushi, and regular American fare. My husband and I stuck with tapas which we were very pleased with. Our friends added paella and a chef's roll to the 2 tapas they ordered. Everything was delicious and much better than I expected from a small town establishment. It could've easily been a place in downtown Chicago. The plating was beautiful and the pairing of food creative. The scallops with wonton and pickled cabbage was unusually delicious and unexpected. And while I loved everything, the dates were probably my least favorite. The small dates seemed slightly overpowered by the smoky bacon. That just may be a matter of preference though, and I would certainly try them again. None of us could believe the beers were only $5. The husbands were very happy. Lol. Our waitress recommended the creme Brule Martini which was soooo good and that marshmallow was no joke - I had to finish it with my fork. They also had a cherry cordial Martini that I'd go back and try.

Very comfortable and cute inside! Really lovely staff and live music. Wouldn't get the calamari. No seasoning and the tomato sauce was really thin and bland. Potstickers were really well filled, crispy, and good dipping sauce. Goat cheese was delicious! Tempura pork tenderloin made the pork dry - but really crispy and great sauce! Very good. Sliders and fries were excellent, super tasty

Highlights at our table included the mushroom yakitori, an indulgently cheesy shrimp Asiago, an imaginative re-interpretation of steak frites, and a savory chicken crêpe. They actually sounded terrible, but I didn't order them. I had one bite and admittedly liked them more than I had thought I would. - Duck Nachos: Good. These are served as very large chips with toppings - so more like eating a street taco. They were good. - Ravioli Daily Feature: Good - Mushroom Yakitori: Ok. Use of the word yakitori seemed unnecessary. Not bad, but least important dish of the night. - Chicken Crepe: Good - NY Strip: Very good. Nice sauce. Service was good and attentive. As a business dinner, I wasn't quite as discerning about the food as I normally am, but I generally had a good impression of everything. If I was back in town, I would definitely consider coming back.

BITTERSWEET SYMPHONY…read more Mesón Sabika is a truly beloved restaurant with whom I have a complicated history. ______________________ ***REVIEW #1,300*** ______________________ As hundredth milestone reviews go, this one is deeply personal -- I was supposed to have my wedding & reception here in March 2020.  That never happened due to things far beyond my control (damn pandemic) and I've been not-so-secretly pining for that moment ever since. I wound up tying the knot with the love of my life at a nearby park but without any of the fanfare, guests, food, liquor, live band, florist, or photographer.  We had already placed a sizeable deposit on a food & bev package, so when Mesón management abruptly raised the prices on us by 20% due to "volatile market pricing", we accepted a buyout in the form of gift certificates. Between dine-in and carryout orders, over the next 18 months we ate here a LOT.....I'll admit it was fun treating family & friends to dinner with reckless abandon.  Each experience was great, from the service and ambiance to the small plates and sangria.  We did get pretty ill following one visit, although I suspect it came from another guest in the vicinity, rather than a bout of food poisoning. The picturesque mansion - built in 1847 - is elegant but cramped inside, so I recommend dining on the gorgeous patio if weather permits.  Prices for tapas are the same regardless of lunch or dinner, although they do have entree specials unique to both meals (and their delicious paella is exclusive to dinnertime). Without going into crazy detail about each cold dish (of which there are 15) or hot tapas (of which there are 23), I'll call out a few highlights: the bacon-wrapped dates ($14), the duck confit ($16), the cold garlic potato salad ($15), goat cheese w/poached pear ($15), cured salmon in dill cream cheese ($14) and grilled skirt steak ($19). Their paella is great and feeds 3-4 people; I recommend the 'campesina' ($25 with chicken & chorizo) unless you're big on seafood, in which case the 'mariscos' ($42 with shrimp, mussels, clams, scallops, and octopus) might be up your alley.  Desserts are splendid, especially the crème brûlée ($12) and the pear tart ($12). The servers are all male (it's a Catalan thing) and very attentive.  Order a pitcher of white or red house sangria and let all your troubles melt away until you're set adrift on memory bliss.  Or until they kick you out. * TL;DR * Just like the 'tarta de chocolate' on their dessert menu, Mesón stirs up feelings in me that are poignantly bittersweet. On one hand, I've been here 10 times and have nothing but praise for the kitchen + atmosphere.  On the other hand, whenever I see the staff prepping the adjacent event space for a wedding, I get wistful and cry a teeny bit inside.  Couldn't the COVID outbreak have waited one more month, until after my nuptials? The restaurant biz is tough with plenty of overhead, but Mesón is still chugging along and serving the same excellent tapas since 1990.  Anyone who's ever dined here can attest it's a gorgeous venue with spectacular food and professional service. I highly recommend Mesón Sabika for lunch or dinner, and if you're considering having a wedding here, do it.  Hopefully you'll have better luck than me.

These are both part of my go-to order here. Recently expanded my order and tried the short rib over polenta for the first time, it was amazing. Tender. Flavorful. Good sized portion. Wonderful. Will absolutely get again. For dessert, and there's always room for dessert here in my opinion, I love to get the rich panna cotta. This past time though we got the butterscotch budino, which was smooth and rich without being overly sweet. It was perfect to share (or not)! Just enough hint of butterscotch and topped with a crumbled shortbread cookie to an add a little crunch to the otherwise creamy treat. The staff is always helpful in making recommendations to suit your tastes too! There is a call ahead wait list and they've also started taking reservations. It was really nice out so, naturally, we were at the outdoor bar/patio. What a delightful space: open, airy, ample seating, great staff. I'd love to share my full experience at Preservation but alas, there isn't much in the way of food…read moreor drink I can report on. The service however, is a different story. My friend and I arrived around 7:15pm this evening, Tuesday night, a weekday. We were greeted by a hostess in a full winter jacket and completely empty front room. She gave us the option to sit in said empty room or to follow her back to a "cozy heated area." We couldn't decide so we asked her to choose, and she led us down a long, narrow hallway to the back. There were three parties total in the indoor patio--us, another table of 2 and a large party of 8. Their outdoor patio was open, and with a view of it from the cozy room. The outdoor patio was festive with holiday lights, heaters and perhaps 3 people sitting at the bar. Many employees bustled back and forth through the door linking our two spaces. Our waitress brought us two glasses of water and food menus, pointed out the QR code menu on our table and walked away. That was our ONLY interaction with her. We proceeded to then sit for 15 minutes, watching our waitress, along with 3 other employees walk back and forth, attentively serving the large party, cleaning up a recently vacated back booth, chatting with one another and even saw another employee take a moment to vape inside near the POS system. We were ignored. No eye contact, no smile, no acknowledgment. It's as if we were not even there. For a slow Tuesday night, with ample staff, this was unacceptable. It grew so uncomfortable that we gathered our jackets and began to walk out. As we made our way back down the long hallway, the hostess, carrying a tray of waters, thanked us for coming in. Clearly there is a lack of awareness--or attention to detail. In what world would we have been able to order drinks, eat and pay our bill in less than 30 minutes since you seated us? But Finally! Someone noticed us. Too bad it was too little too late. We walked a block down to a different restaurant, and had an amazing time, spending more time & money than originally anticipated at that establishment, as a direct result of the poor hospitality and lack of service received at Preservation. Their loss was the Alchemist's gain.
